Welcome From the HeadmasterAs we come to the end of an another successful year in Qatar, we reflect on what a tremendous year of recognition and progression it has been for King’s College Doha. We discuss many of these achievements in more detail within this newsletter, along with some of the adventures that have enriched our academic programme this Term.

There have been so many highlights from the year, from academic and sporting successes to the launch of the first of many Professional Development Conferences for educationists throughout Qatar; along with our more recent accreditation success and news about the progression of King’s College here in Doha – detailed further in this issue. We hope you have enjoyed reading about our many highlights throughout the year via our numerous methods of online and printed communications. One of the key areas I feel particularly proud of is to hear from our UK colleagues, following a recent visit, that King’s Doha “Feels just like King’s UK”. Building on our close relationship with our sister school in the UK has been key to maintaining the quality and integrity of the King’s offer to families in Doha.

Further feedback from their visit is detailed within this newsletter, along with a note from Justin Chippendale, Headmaster of King’s Taunton, following his visit by our esteemed Chairman, H.E. Sheikh Mansoor bin Jassim Thani Al Thani. We look forward to fostering even closer links into the future through shared resources and consistent communication at all levels.

As you will be aware, it was with great sadness that I announced my leaving the school at the end of this academic year. I will take with me many wonderful memories of a school that is, for the whole, unrecognisable to the first day I arrived. In my welcome speech back then, I asked the school community for three things – shared ownership, mutual respect and for our students to fully engage in school life, and I certainly feel proud in leaving a school with such strong values in place.

Life is such that you don’t appreciate fully what you have had until later on and I am sure this will be the case for both myself and the pupils with regard to the school. Looking ahead to next term, the school is in the very capable hands of Mrs Sibley and the Senior Management Team who will continue to push the school forward along with, in due course, a newly appointed Principal.

I hope you enjoy this special edition of The Pelican and enjoy a fabulous summer break.

I am delighted to inform parents that further to a recent Ministry of Education inspection, the school has been granted the Qatar National School Accreditation (QNSA). This is the result of a vigorous process involving all school stakeholders and an in-depth school self-study. During our inspection, there were up to seven inspectors in school for a week assessing every aspect of school operation from teaching observations to health and safety compliance.

This is a huge achievement on many fronts. Firstly, the award is only usually given to schools after three years of operation with King’s only having two full years since opening. Secondly, the full process traditionally takes up to 18 months yet as a school we completed this in just under six.

Some of the highlighted strengths of the school include a high quality of teaching through using a wide range of teaching styles and activities, a strong provision of student support, positive relationships between staff and pupils (and parents), the broad provision of school events, the quality provision of buildings and resources, broad and quality communication, the effective dealing with parental concerns and an overall strong organisational structure. There were, as always, areas for development, which included the continuance of formulating a long-term strategic plan for the school, the further development of the Arabic and Islamic Studies provision within the school in terms of teaching styles, training and continuing to meet Ministry regulations, to incorporate our library to support learning and to formalise provision for gifted and talented pupils within

the school. It was noted that most of the areas for development highlighted were acknowledged within the school self-study and, as such, plans for improvement were in place to ensure progress.

I would like to personally thank all members of the community for this achievement, in particular, all the staff in the school who spent many hours assessing every area of our provision, as well as those parents who kindly met the inspection team and shared feedback on the school.

A few words from our UK colleagues following recent visits between the schools. King’s Hall is the Prep School for King’s College in Taunton. Their trip centred around the sharing and comparing of provision and approaches between schools as well as discussions regarding our expansion into Year 7 and beyond. We look forward to fostering even closer links into the future through shared resources and consistent communication at all levels.

Mrs Hardy, Head of Geography at King’s Hall (The Prep School of King’s Taunton), commented:

“When we were told we were getting the opportunity to visit King’s College Doha, Sasha and I were so excited. As a school we have closely followed the development of KCD from the planning stages, as well as having had the chance to meet a number of KCD staff when they have visited King’s College, UK. The Headmaster of King’s Taunton, Mr Chippendale, delivers regular updates to the whole school, with children and staff alike very keen to find out more about our partner school.

We very quickly felt that the school shares much more than just a name and uniform. The children and staff could not have been more welcoming, with very high standards of work evident from fantastic displays all around the school and the work we saw being produced in lessons. It was very easy to fit in as the ethos and culture around the school really felt like we were at home – the children were all so polite and keen to please, taking real pride in their work.

The staff were really engaging and the children were clearly enjoying their time at school, with the whole school adopting such an obvious child-centred approach to teaching and learning. We were lucky enough to address the majority of the school when we delivered our assembly – the atrium is an amazing space full of such colourful displays that instantly captivate and inspire you as you walk through the doors.

This trip enabled us to deepen links between staff and share more resources. Sasha got to meet Mr McCann and his Year 3 class after various previous communications between them and her own Year 3 class in England. Some of the KCD Year 3 children even went home and wrote letters for us to bring back to England which was very special.

We are looking forward to catching up with many of the KCD staff who have promised to come and visit us next time they are in England.

We want to say a massive thank you to everyone at KCD for making us feel so welcome and giving us so many good memories in such a short space of time – thank you!” Anna Hardy and Sasha Gompels.

Justin Chippendale, Headmaster of King’s Taunton, expressed the root as to why our collaboration is so successful and already providing enhanced opportunities for our students:

“Our close, rewarding and purposeful relationship with King’s College Doha exists because of two factors. The first is our naturally occurring warmth and desire to work in close collaboration with those involved in our community for the greater benefit of all and the second is that we take care to share in each other’s lives.

Recent months have been a powerful demonstration of the second starting with a delegation from King’s UK to spend a few days working together with the KCD team as part of their preparations for the then-upcoming (and highly successful) QNSA inspection and on top of this, around this time, we were thrilled to hear that one of the KCD Year 6 pupils will be joining King’s UK as a boarder in August.

We have also been privileged to welcome our much respected and admired sponsor, H.E. Sheikh Mansoor bin Jassim Thani Al Thani, to the UK to have first-hand experience of the education we offer here: it was wonderful to show His Excellency around and for him to meet the staff and children. Finally, we have just had two teachers from King’s UK spend time at KCD and they have returned buzzing about all they saw. One commented, “It feels just like King’s (UK)”. And there is the proof that our strong relationship is also an effective one.”

The Expansion of King’s College in DohaFollowing the announcements we made at the end of last term, we are pleased to confirm that we are continuing to work towards securing the relevant authority approvals for the expansion of King’s College schools in Doha.

King’s College Doha – Abu Sidra, will open in August 2021 for pupils aged 3-18, thus providing our children currently attending KCD - Al Thumama with a natural and excellent pathway for their senior education and IGCSE and A Level examinations. The new school will be built in partnership with the Al Asmakh real estate group and will be located in Abu-Sidra approximately 20 - 25 minutes from our current site. The location will also provide easy access for many residential areas such as Al Waab, Al Muaither, Ain-Khalid and Abu Hamour, which are all within a 5km radius of the school.

The school will be purpose-built and offer world-class facilities including:• Specialist teaching and learning

areas

• A dedicated early years centre• A performing and visual arts

centre• A STEM centre that includes

science laboratories and design technology studios

• A media centre with a TV and recording studio

• A 500 capacity theatre• An Olympic-sized 50m

swimming pool• Two full-size soccer pitches

King’s College Doha in Abu Sidra will be the third King’s College school to open in Doha following on from the highly successful opening of KCD in Al Thumama with the opening of KCD Al Thameed, an international primary school and girls upper prep and senior school (Years 5 to 13), due to open in August 2020. Alongside the new campuses in Abu Sidra and Al Thameed, discussions are on-going with regard to the use of our current site in Al-Thumama.

There is a keenness to retain this site given the excellent location

and investment made in the school refurbishment, however, being a Ministry owned building occupied under a renewable lease, confirmation of this cannot be given until a later date.

A formal media announcement of this new site will be made at the beginning of the new academic year, once we are given the go-ahead by the Ministry of Education.

There will be further information available to parents with regard to the expansion of King’s College in Doha in due course. These exciting developments are designed to provide your child with an excellent education, in first-class facilities based on the traditions, expertise and innovations of King’s College UK.

The presentation about the expansion of King’s College Doha can be found in a letter sent to parents in May. To request a replacement copy please email [email protected].

Scholarships at King’s CollegeAs you may have seen from our recent newsletter, a number of our students have been selected to receive scholarships in recognition for their outstanding performances in both external and internal assessments carried out by the school over the year. We would like to extend our congratulations to Qadir Parkar, Eden Tilley and Harnoor Kaur for gaining academic scholarships to this school for next year and to Gabriella Franklin, who will continue her Sports Scholarship with us further to her continued sporting success.

Our scholarship programme is intended to support talented students who have been selected for showing passion and potential in one or more areas of the curriculum. We couldn’t be happier with the achievements of our wonderful scholars for academic year 2019/20, who we are sure will act as excellent role models and peer leaders; demonstrating how potential can be realised and what can be achieved through commitment and determination.

We would like to also congratulate Roisin O’Sullivan who has achieved a scholarship to King’s Hall, Taunton, the Prep School of our sister school King’s College. Roisin performed very well in all areas of assessment set by King’s Hall and will, in September, be the first King’s College Doha pupil to attend the UK school.

We are also delighted to acknowledge Charlotte Akiki for passing the entrance exams for King’s College Worcester and Harry Houston for gaining a place at Hereford Cathedral School. Entry success to these UK independent schools is highly competitive and a testament to the hard work and ability of these wonderful pupils. It is also an acknowledgment of the strong academic course set in place by this school to enable such academic success.

The start of our scholarship programme at King’s Doha is an important step forward in our development in Qatar and we look forward to recognising future scholars at King’s Doha in the years to come. For further details of our scholarship programme please visit our website:

I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone at the school for making Gabriella’s first 12 months in Doha so happy and successful. She has made huge progress since she joined the school academically and that is down in large part to the encouragement she receives from her teachers – special thanks to Miss Martins for going above and beyond in terms of the extra support in the classroom, both academic and emotional, she has been excellent.

Mr Franklin

We are thrilled that Eden has won an academic scholarship from your school and we are extremely proud of her. Eden really enjoys school and we are very happy with everything she has achieved so far and of course very grateful to the school for giving her these wonderful learning opportunities.

As always, Pre-Prep have had a jam-packed but fun-filled term. Our productions from Pre-School to Year 2 have been a real highlight of the term with each and every child being given the opportunity to perform to an audience. One could see, from their beaming smiles, that they took this in their stride and loved every moment; from the preparing of the settings to the performance itself. Whether they were a character springing from a traditional tale, a wriggling, jiggling sea creature or an animal from colder climates each child developed the confidence to perform with pride.

Little Kings

Maths Through StoriesWe have also seen maths come alive through stories, this term. Our very youngest children have been exploring counting and sorting/classifying using the Button Box. They enjoyed exploring buttons of all shapes and sizes. ‘Billions of Bricks’ provided opportunities for our Reception pupils to explore repeated patterns and symmetry within the world in which we live and what better place to do this than in Qatar? Year 1 waddled (not for the first time this term!) into the world of penguins where they explored counting on in groups of 2, 5 and 10 and tried to solve how to successfully package fish for each of the penguins based on the

restrictions provided by the containers. Year 2 entered the world of giants as they tested their measurement skills, to the full, in creating giants many times taller than the average height of each child in their form. They set about creating wigs, glasses, teeth and clothes for the giant from Jack and The Beanstalk.

The stories provided the line of enquiry and gave the

children a ‘hook’ on their learning. The purposeful practice of setting about the tasks helped to encourage mathematical fluency which is so very important in young mathematicians.

Higher order thinking skills of linking and metacognition were explored as the children applied their new-found knowledge to the tasks in hand. Fabulous work from all our mathemagicians!

Quotes on symmetry from the children: “I have learnt how to make things that are the same of both sides.” Almayassa

“If we have a blue dot here, we need a blue dot there, to make it symmetrical.” Damian

“I learnt that the colours must be the same of both sides.” Mohammed

“Same on both sides.” Malek

“I learnt how to draw a boys face the same on both sides.” Malika

“A reflection is a form of symmetry.” Mariam

“We need 18 blocks to reach Mikhail's height.” Daniel “I love this story, the bricks are so many!” Faaris

“If you put a line down the middle of my bottle its symmetry.” Daniel

“The line of symmetry is down the middle. If its’ across it won't be symmetry.” Giselle

Performing ArtsThe final term got off to a tremendous start with the arrival of the Orff instruments and marimba; Years 3 and 4 were the first to present classroom work on these instruments in a concert for parents. Our Musical Theatre Club involving pupils from Years 4 to 6 performed a superb rendition of the musical ‘Alice in Wonderland’ led by Ms Mologni.

It was a huge success, involving pupils in technical, stage and acting aspects of theatre. Years 1 and 2 presented an oceanic spectacle with songs and poems from ‘Commotion in the Ocean’. It was a fabulous collaboration between the music staff (Mrs Pyne for teaching the songs, Mr Granger who composed the music, accompanied the show together with Ms Mologni who added additional percussion), Year 1 and 2 classroom teachers (clever, quirky and fun whole-class poetry recitals), teaching assistants (stunning artwork) and Friends of King’s parents (more amazing backdrops). Music in the Early Years continues to be an enormous bundle of fun!

A love of music-making was clear for all to see during the recent Fairytale productions, enjoyed by such a throng of parents and visitors.

Finally, our ever-expanding instrumental programme gave two wonderful spring concerts. Here we witnessed a significant increase in confidence and technical ability in our young players, in particular during the Violin Ensemble’s enchanting debut performance led by Ms Lysenko and Mrs Granger. The thrum of music-making around the school of late has been particularly uplifting and is a testament to the dedication and inspiration provided by the Music Team.

Alice in Wonderland

Reception & Pre-School Performances

We were so proud of our Reception and Pre-School children, who did brilliantly acting out their favourite stories from the book ‘Once upon a time’ for their end of year performances. Thank you so much to parents for all your support in preparing your children for this wonderful performance and to the King’s College EYFS department, who had great fun bringing the children’s favourite stories to life.

By Mrs Witte, Head of Pre-Prep

Our Year 4, 5 and 6 performing arts students put on a BRILLIANT debut musical production of ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

King’s Kids Selected to Launch KidZania DohaFollowing an audition and selection process by KidZania, a number of our Year 4 to 6 pupils were invited to perform at the official opening of KidZania

Doha! This was a great honour and we are very proud of them as they all sang beautifully and were a credit to our school. Well done to all the children involved.

Year 4 Explore Horrible Histories Live

Year 4 had a great time this term as they delved into a Horrible Histories Live production of Barmy Britain. A thrilling and comical two-man show from The Birmingham Stage Company, which explored the stories of significant characters in British history in memorable ways! The children discovered a king buried in the car park, the terrible teeth of Queen Elizabeth I and the Georgian detectives who found a headless man!

They later took a trip into the night with the night soil men and discovered how we could have survived the first ever train ride.

Year 3 Students Take a Doha Bus Trip

King’s College Year 3 students had a great time recently on their Doha Bus trip to take a little piece of their Qatar history lessons outdoors! The children spent the morning visiting popular landmarks and locations in Doha with a fantastic stop at Souq Waqif. Other highlights included the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA), Sheraton Park, Katara and The Pearl. It was a thoroughly enjoyable trip for all.

King’s Student Council Negotiate the Best Deals on Plants for Our School Sensory Garden

King’s College Student Council members showed off their enterprise skills this term as they negotiated a 200 QAR saving on a range of plants for the school’s sensory garden. They did a great job selecting the best plants for the best price! The children are loving the space and it looks absolutely beautiful. A special thank you to the Friends of King’s who kindly fundraised for the money for the garden.

Year 5 & 6 Join the UK Junior Maths Challenge

We’re very proud of our Year 5 and 6 students who took part in a very challenging UK Junior Mathematical Challenge at Doha English Speaking School. The challenge involved a problem-solving and reasoning paper, aimed at children aged Year 8 or below – we now eagerly await the results, which have been sent off to the UK for marking. Best of luck to all the competitors!

King’s Host the Final Interschool Maths Tournament of the Academic YearWe hosted our final interschool maths tournament this term between students from King’s College Doha, Doha English Speaking School, RGS Guildford Qatar and Sherborne Qatar, who competed in a range of challenging problem-solving and reasoning tasks. All the children were fantastic and showed great resolve during the morning. King’s students did brilliantly, taking two joint seconds and one third place with Romanos, Raquel and Mustapha! Very well done to all. Until next year!

Health and Wellbeing Week

By sharpening the focus on mental health this year, during Health & Wellbeing Week we enjoyed numerous relaxing activities within the classroom. These were balanced with personal hygiene through talks from visiting physicians and generally raising awareness through discussion and good practice. Interactive sessions were run by one of our parents who is passionate about promoting a healthy lifestyle in schools (she is also a dentist), and a dietician from the International Medical Centre.

There is a wealth of information at our fingertips regarding mental health with some excellent, inspirational online resources, including:www.mentallyhealthyschools.org.uk

Our staff are often struck by the observations that children make, in particular when it comes to one’s own lifestyle. It can be most overwhelming when children truly take on board facts and figures shared with them by their teachers, and then take these thought-provoking ideas and concepts home with a view to improving mental health on a larger scale. There is still plenty more we can do and we will continue to seek new ways to provide children (and their teachers) the necessary mental shelter required to navigate through the relentless pace of today.

A few top tips can take the form of short breathing exercises, listening to music (playing an instrument), forcefully thinking positive with a friend. You’ll be amazed by the power of these simple techniques.

Reception Get to Work at KidZania! Our Reception children had an enormous amount of fun at the mini-city KidZania Doha this term, applying their teamwork and practical skills to a range of real-life tasks and jobs. The future really is theirs!

Year 6 Explore Three Major Chapters of Qatar History at the National Museum of Qatar

Our Year 6 students had a fabulous time visiting the National Museum of Qatar; their enthusiasm and interest in the exhibits was infectious and made the day a great experience for everyone. Including the museum staff who commented on their exemplary behaviour.

During their trip Mrs Thandi challenged the children to choose three artefacts from the three major chapters of Qatar’s journey: 1. Beginnings 2. Life in Qatar and 3. The modern history of Qatar. They presented their thoughts as to which artefact they

felt best represented the entire history of Qatar to the group, then wrote a report on their experience. ‘The Museum itself ’ won the argument, which we felt was particularly astute. A huge thank you to the museum staff for providing such a great educational journey for our students from start to finish, including a very informative tour. We will be back!

Qur’an CompetitionBy Mr Mohammed Abdel Gaid, Head of Arabic

Congratulations to our students who did incredibly well in the Holy Qur’an Competition recently, receiving prizes and certificates of appreciation.

The competition was organised by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs (Awqaf) in coordination with the Qatar Ministry of Education and Higher Education and attracted over 33,000 students from 404 schools (government and private).

SportsAs we come to the end of another school year it is often a time to reflect and look forward to the future with fresh ideas to develop the sporting provision further at King’s College.

Since my arrival in January this year I have been very impressed with the commitment shown by the students and my staff to PE and competitive sport in general, but I know our work is only in its infancy and more will be done to increase our standing within Qatar and enhance the curriculum further – giving our students more opportunities to access high-quality PE lessons.

To that end we are building several connections to enhance our PE and sport delivery from August 2019, including Aspire Academy, Gharafa Sports Club, H2o and our own Academy Doha, to name a few. These will aid us as we prepare for upcoming tournaments – more details will follow at the start of the new school year but we are very excited about our partnerships.

In other news we intend to significantly increase our already strong swimming provision for King’s students from August.

By Mr Ian Hutchinson, Director of Sport

We are one of very few schools in Qatar to offer swimming from Pre-School upwards, throughout the whole school year and from August we intend to enhance this offer with swimming squad sessions daily at 6.30am for those students who wish to take their swimming lessons to the next level.

As we develop and grow, as does the technology we use. For we will introduce a new piece of planning/assessment software to assess and collate evidence on each child’s learning experience in PE. This is a significant investment from the school and one we feel will benefit the staff and students alike.

We’re also excited about a new change of colour scheme planned for the main sports hall in August, including some motivational statements displayed on the walls to inspire the children to achieve their potential during each lesson.

I do hope all families enjoy a restful break and recharge the batteries for a fun, action-packed year in sport and PE at King’s College.

King’s CommYOUnityI am very proud of the partnership that we have established with our parents at King’s College Doha. It really does feel like one big family from the moment that the children arrive at the gate in the morning and confidently shake our hands to when they leave at the end of the day, doing the same, and often beyond the school day at our many events for families. This year many of you have joined us for various family activities such as the Picnic in the Park, the Spring Fayre and our School Iftar.

In addition to these, your support for ‘in-house’ events this year has been phenomenal with the World Book Day assembly and Year 1 and 2’s ‘Commotion in the Ocean’ being pretty much standing room only. We very much appreciate your support in attending these as it means so much to the children who work so hard.

We have also had a good turnout at our many open lessons and workshops this year. Parents have attended maths, English, PE and science lessons and had the opportunity to learn more about how the children learn phonics, reading and maths as well as how we assess the children.

I would personally like to thank every one of our parents for supporting all of these things but, most importantly, for supporting your children to be the best that they can be. As a parent myself I know how hard it can be to fit in all the reading practice and the homework whilst still finding time to enjoy being a family so we do appreciate the effort that you put in at home. Working together will assure the best outcomes for our children.

I would like to also add an additional note of thanks and praise for our many parents who have gone above and beyond this year to ensure the great success of the many aforementioned events and to act as Class Parents or support on trips etc. We really could not have had such a great year without their support and dedication.

I would like to wish all of our families a very happy holiday and I look forward to us continuing our partnership next year.
