The University mourns the destb ol
Joseph Wharlon. An iron master of!
national repute, a financier and plill-
anthropist of note, and a ben-factor
of the University of Pennsylvania, he
was 'Hi. of Philadelphia's greatest and
liiost distinguish.cl CltlSeU.
Mr. Wliarton became one of the
BjMBl ooptalns of Industry of the
country years ago. He was a genius
in business, and belongs to thai group
of farslghted Americans who, more
than a half century ;IK<>. recognlaed
our unlimited ana nnden loped re
sources and foresaw our future
nrs.i oi ■ commercial nation. Be was
of that group of men of foresight,
ability, Judgment and energy, who
were unafraid to grapple With the
then unknown problems of the busi-
ness world. The> opened UP new
fields to Commerce and industry and1
stablislied new enterprises, which
nave grown to gigantic ■proportions.
Through ibis r imarkable evolution and
development the business Interests of
our country have Lien put ii| a new
basis, and the result has been as-
tounding. Millions have been ainasse I
and fortunes made, wealth has flowed
to the very finger tips of our nation.
and we have become great In the i yes
of all the world. Our Government,
through our tremendous and most re-
markable development, has become
one of the dictators In the council of
the nations. Hand in hand with this
great wealth has come philanthropy.
Universities and colleges, libraries
and galleries, hospitals and homes, are
endowed almost daily, and scarcely
have the rumblings of the earthquake
died away before we send millions to
the sufferers. Truly we have become
^reat, and let us say also we have be-
come better. We have not closed up
the doori of our vaults and hoarded
our gold. We are not misers who
have prostituted our gifts and energy
for self and selfish ends. We have un-
locked the doors of our coffers and are
giving countless millions for the good
of humanity.
This development of our country Is
a reflection of a similar development
In the lives of such men as Joseph
Wharton. From Iron worker to phil-
anthropist, the steps in his life are a
lesson to all humanity, and the world
la a better place because be worked
and lived in It. . •••
