What a year 2012 ended up to be! I started the year with  the exciting new venture of opening CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities in Kennewick. It was a dream I had worked towards for the majority of my career. With more than a decade of successful experience, and a network of the area's finest real estate professionals by my side, I knew 2012 was the year to finally embark on my mission. The office opened full-swing  in January, with the remainder of the year bringing us opportunity, memories, and more.

The business is off to a successful start! We have achieved every goal and milestone we aimed for when open-ing last January. Our expectations were even surpassed, with a few fortunate surprises.

The “Built in America Home” made by Titan Homes not only set a new building standard and precedent, it gained national attention through various publications, including making the cover of USA Today’s Home magazine.

This past year also brought on a staff of top-performing brokers, and the team continues to grow. We’ve established terrific relationships with our developers, like Sundance Ridge and Acreage on Candy Mountain. We broke ground at Fountain Hills, as well as Phase II of Badger Den.

Our team supported area charities by participating in Junior Achievement, Stomp Out Polio and Step Out for Diabetes. We participated in some of the area’s favorite events, like Cool Desert Nights and The Water Follies, and then traveled to Parsippany, New Jersey, for the International Management Meeting at the CENTURY 21 headquarters. We even unveiled our own CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities cookie!

For extra fun, we’re offering prizes, big and small, with contests like the Master Bedroom Makeover (see page 10 for more information) and the Race to Find Roofus contest.

Now, with 2012 drawing to a close, I want to thank you, our readers, for continuously relying on the Perfect Move Magazine to lend you insight into the latest real estate trends, local happenings and Tri-Cities intelligence. Happy Holidays, on behalf of myself, the CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities team, and everyone at the Perfect Move!

Rod Wieber, Chief Resource Of-ficer of Second Harvest, knows just how imperative community support is during these holiday

weeks. His organization, Second Harvest, has a simple yet touching mission: fighting hunger and feeding hope by bringing community resources together to feed people in need through empowerment, education and partnerships.

The Spokane-based charity operates more than 50 food banks in the Columbia Basin, feeding an estimated 50,000 indi-viduals or more a month. Cash and non-perishable food donations are collected, sorted, packaged and delivered to local residents year-round. For every one dollar donation received, Second Harvest is able to procure and distribute six pounds of food; enough to make about four meals.

“With one in six people at risk of hunger in the Columbia Basin, one out of three being children, we’re asking for the community’s support through giving of their time to volunteer, their voices to advocate for our mission, and/or their gifts

of food and funds,” says Wieber. With the holidays rapidly approaching, Tri-Cities organizations are banding together to join Second Harvest in the fight to end hunger.

Through the month of December, Senske Lawn and Tree Care will host a holiday light show, where they will accept non-perishable food donations. On De-cember 1st, KNDU will accept donations at their station’s parking lot from 8:00 a.m. to noon. Then, on December 15th, KVEW and Yoke’s will partner up to collect contribu-tions at all Yoke’s locations from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. A drop-off bucket for food donations is also available at CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities.

Now is your chance to help make a difference too. “We are always in need of volunteers, age 18 and older,” says Wieber, “to donate their time for a variety of events in our warehouse or elsewhere in the community.” Residents can call (509) 545-0787 to learn more about volunteer-ing, donating food or starting a food drive, or making a cash donation.

f o r C h A r i t YSenske’s at it again. They’ve decorated their cor-

porate office with over 140,000 lights synchronized and animated to all the classic Christmas hits. These great efforts are in part to raise awareness, food, and monetary donations for Second Harvest, a non-prof-it organization orchestrating a network of over 250 food banks and meal centers throughout Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho.

Senske’s corporate office is located at 400 N. Quay in Kennewick. Those who wish to contribute to this charitable cause may do so online by visiting www.2-harvest.org, via SMS by texting “HUNGER” to 52000 (instantly donates $10), or by tagging Senske on Facebook ($1 will be donated in your name).

The Clover Island Yacht Club organizes the annu-al Lighted Boat parade along the Columbia River, a favorite among Tri-Cities residents. As per tradition, the parade will kick off at Clover Island in Kennewick and travel along Columbia Park to Howard Amon Park before looping back. The parade is visible on both sides of the river, so grab a warm beverage, a thick blanket and be sure to get out there early for a good spot. The parade starts at 6:00 p.m. and runs until 9:00 p.m.

Those wishing to take part in the parade are wel-come to join. Participants are not required to be members of the Clover Island Yacht Club to par-ticipate in this event. For more information, contact Larry Kuga at (509) 734-9599.

ViCki monteAGudoClean out the gutters and down-spouts. Water buildup will create bigger ice weight on your gut-ters and pull them down or bend them out of shape. Consider installing leaf guards on gutters so they don’t get clogged. Add extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the

home. This prevents water from getting into your base-ment or pooling around landscaping.

A record-setting snowfall? Subzero temperatures? Or a meek and mild winter? No matter. When it comes to protecting your investment, winterizing your home is a must. Keep your abode winter-ready and cost-efficient with these proven tips from your local CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities team.

BriAn hAmiltonPut a note in your calendar for mid-Octo-ber next year to blow out your irrigation system to ensure you perform this impor-tant task. If you haven’t already done so this season, it may not be too late, thanks to our mild winters. Then you can rest as-sured your system won’t suffer any freez-ing, causing broken pipes or valves, saving you potentially costly repairs.

miChelle BouCheYHave your heating system professionally serviced. It's a good idea to have your fur-nace cleaned and tuned annually. Also, re-place or clean furnace filters once a month during the heating season. Dirty filters re-strict airflow and increase energy demand. Ensure your cold air returns aren’t blocked. This causes your furnace to operate less ef-ficiently. Consider switching out your ther-

mostat for a programmable one. While you’re at it, lowering your temperature setting 5 degrees at night when everyone is asleep can save you 5% on your heating bill.

PAttY mACAlisterWeatherstrip your doors. Maintaining an airtight seal on your doors is essential for stopping cold drafts and keeping your home comfortable. The average American home has leaks that amount to a nine-square-foot hole in the wall. Find drafts by walking through your home with a lit can-dle. If the flame flickers or blows out, you’ll know there’s a draft nearby.

JAne fAllonHave any trees that hang over your roof or power lines trimmed to avoid damage to roofs, cars, and patios in the event of heavy snow fall or high winds. Remove any dead branches while you’re at it. Snow and ice can weigh down branches, causing them to break and potentially hurting someone.

miChAel mACkAYCover patio furniture. As sad as it is to move indoors after enjoying your outdoor furniture all summer, taking a little extra time to care for your patio set now will keep everything pristine for spring’s return. While most patio furniture is made to stay outside for the winter, some precautions may still be required for harsher weather conditions. Plastic, vinyl and synthetic

wicker can all be easily maintained with some soapy water and a garden hose. But metal, wood and natural wicker will have more specific maintenance requirements.

kAren BuChAnAnKeep your winter weather tools in good shape. No one likes to have to trouble-shoot a problem or find themselves with a subpar shovel in harsh weather. Make sure your snowblower is gassed up and oper-able. Check the condition of snow shovels and ice scrapers. Keep bags of ice melt, sand, or kitty litter for traction on hand to avoid the rush at the store in the event of a storm.

AnGie GoodenoWMake sure your chimneys and heating vents are clear of debris for your fireplace or wood burning stove. Often overlooked but extremely important, cleaning your chimney not only improves efficiency, it’s also a safety matter: buildup of creosote can cause chimney fires that may spread to the house. When not in use, close the damper to stop warm air from escaping.

For gas fireplaces, you may consider a professional inspection to ensure safety and proper operation. This is also a great time to check the operation and change the batteries on smoke detec-tors. Check to see that your fire extinguisher is still where it should be and still works. You may also want to invest in a carbon mon-oxide detector.

Christine sABAlAReversing your ceiling fan is a small tip that people don't often think of. By reversing its direction from the summer operation, the fan will push warm air downward and force it to recirculate, keeping you more comfortable and saving money. Which di-rection should the blades turn for winter? As you look up, the blades should be mov-ing clockwise.

mAtt CronrAthKeep your exterior faucets covered and disconnect your garden hoses. Chances are you won’t be using any of the water faucets outside of your home, so shut the valve that allows water to those exterior bibs. This prevents the water inside from freezing and cracking your pipes. You can also purchase inexpensive insulated cov-ers for your outside water faucets. These

are easy to install and will offer some protection against freezing.

THE HIGHLIGHT

Nobody knows modern home trends like CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities. As a leader in the real estate industry, they’ve en-countered their fair share of top-of-the-line master suites. From classically-inspired décor to ultra-contemporary

design, they’ve seen bedrooms that are surely the envy of homes across the nation.

They’ve also seen a few master bedrooms in need of a little love. The Master Bedroom Makeover Contest, which ran on CEN-

TURY 21 Tri-Cities’ Facebook page through November 30th, offered entrants a total bedroom makeover as its grand prize. Contestants entered by posting a picture of their current master bedroom on CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities’ Facebook timeline, along with a note ex-plaining why they felt they should be the one chosen to win.

The winner, announced in early December, is currently receiving a total revamping of their master bedroom. A plan and budget has been personally tailored to the winner’s individual needs. Instead of giving away a pre-packaged bedroom set, CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities

is ensuring that the prize is based on the winner’s specific needs and wants. This contest is truly focused on making their bedroom dreams become a reality.

CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities’ Facebook page had received an array of entries along with heartwarming stories from local residents who had hoped to be selected as the lucky winner. Many disheartening photos showed the need of just drastic renovations, including miss-ing carpet, the absence of furniture, and too-tiny beds. Contestants from all walks of life shared their stories, hoping that they would be the recipient of brand new surroundings.

Entries were accepted through November 30th at facebook.com/CENTURY21TriCities. A winner was selected, and will be revealed on Facebook sometime in December. When the bedroom makeover is complete, photos will be shown and shared through social media and The Perfect Move Magazine. Pick up our next issue to learn the latest of this total master bedroom transformation! – Meagan Hines

Ballet and yoga: both are performed by some of the most graceful and delicate athletes in the world and

are among the most difficult arts to master. Each requires full-time dedication and practice to truly become a recognized pro-fessional. In fact, to achieve expert status in either is an accomplishment few can claim to have attained.

However, against all likelihood, Ashley Hooper of Kennewick has mastered both.

A lifelong resident of the Tri-Cities, Ash-ley recognized a natural ability and passion within herself to learn the art of ballet early in life. She started at 11 years old, quickly joining the Mid-Columbia Ballet by age 13. Her talent transcended her career, as she joined Regional Dance America—a national organization dedicated to pro-moting the education and advancement of dancers—for four consecutive years.

Under the guidance of Debra Rogo, Artistic Director of Mid-Columbia Ballet, Ashley acquired a discipline for body and

mind, as well as a desire to teach. Her pas-sion took her to Los Angeles, where she utilized her advanced athleticism to master yoga. She studied directly under Bikram Choudhury, creator of Bikram, or “hot,” yoga. Recognized for her superlative skills, Ashley travels to Choudhury’s advanced seminars as his “asana” (posture) demon-strator.

“Yoga is healing and therapeutic to the body, mind, and soul,” says Ashley, “and I get an artistic gratitude from doing yoga, much like I do when dancing, because yoga is beautiful, and everyone’s own prac-tice is an expression of themselves.”

In 2006, Ashley attained the highest yoga achievement possible by being named World Yoga Champion. Although former winners are disallowed from com-peting at all future World Yoga Champion-ships, Ashley hopes for a “Championship of Champions” someday so that she can bring home the newest, highest honors.

Ashley currently owns Bikram Yoga Tri-

Cities in Kennewick with her sister, Angie Casassa. They offer classes and techniques poised to benefit students of all ages and abilities. “Bikram yoga is designed for beginners of all levels,” explains Ashley, “even if you have no yoga experience.” Her studio offers enticing and unlimited new student offers, perfect for yoga nov-ices and newcomers alike.

Now, as a special guest ballerina, Ashley will be dancing her tenth performance in the Mid-Columbia Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker. She will be dancing Ara-bian Coffee, a scene that was altered for her in 2010 so that she could incorporate her yoga techniques into her performance.

Witness Ashley display her multi-faceted talents at any of the four Nutcracker performances, December 7th through 9th. Tickets are available for purchase on Mid-Columbia Ballet’s website or at Dance Boutique on Aaron Drive in Richland.

foliage for Christmas lightsPart of the fun of Christmas is putting

lights on trees and shrubs to give some night-time festive cheer! The Tri-Cities’ climate is tough on traditional Christmas Tree species, so here are a few species that grow here and are willing to be an outdoor Christmas tree for you. For larger areas where a big tree can grow, consider the Norway Spruce, Concolor Fir, or Colorado Spruce. For areas that need a smaller tree, consider the Columnar Norway Spruce, Fat Albert Spruce, or Serbian Spruce. Then you can go even smaller with Irish Bell Pine, Compact Gem Pine, or Soft Serve Cy-press that all slowly mature to 10 feet tall. You can also find evergreens that meander, creep, crawl or spray upward to light up the night. There are even species whose shape you can train to twist or spiral in order to put lights on them for the Christmas season, like the Weeping Atlas Cedar, but also to decorate throughout the year, like for ghoulish fun at Halloween.

Pops of Color for WinterAmong the greens, blues, grays, and

white, if we have snow, you can use the fol-lowing plants with their showy winter bark to give you splashes of color. The Redtwig

Dogwood family stands out because of their durability to handle our area and their awe-some red stems. There are many varieties available to fit a number of flowerbed sizes. Another good shrub is the Fox Valley Birch; as it matures, it has cream-colored bark that peels to have an orange underside. Where space is not restrictive, the Golden Niobe Willow shows off its iridescent yellow stems against any cloudy sky.

Bright Winter BerriesThe classic red berries of Hollies and

Mistletoe can be achieved by planting Hollies in afternoon shade spots. Mistletoe is actu-ally a weed, so instead plant Cotoneasters, Beauty Berries, Barberries, Viburnums, and Sumacs to provide berries of reds, blues, and pinks that feed the birds while giving you a winter show in sunny spots.

These ideas work well for the holiday season and long winter to give us a little color and something lively to look at! If you want to further explore the realm of evergreens to see what is out there, check out the Iseli Nursery website, iselinursery.com, a conifer grower that supplies local garden centers with cool evergreens.

– Alex Job

A Garden to End Those Winter Blues!Winter can be a hard time to enjoy the outdoors because it’s chilly, dark, and somewhat slow-growing. However, there are many ways to spruce up the yard to give some excite-ment to your landscape as winter comes upon us. Check out these colorful ideas!

Many an expectant Mid-Columbia mom has cried like a baby over the lack of stylish maternity clothing and accessories for her and her little bundle of joy. The Tri-Cities

has historically been devoid of products for modern moms.

For the past year, In Bloom Maternity and Baby Boutique in Pasco has been filling the new mother-hood niche. With a mission of offering popular items not often found in the area, In Bloom specializes

in award-winning products for mothers and babies.

Owner Shannon Toranzo lived in Hawaii during her pregnancy and says she found it difficult to find quality products without resorting to ordering online. Besides being expensive and having to wait for shipping, it was frustrating not to be able to shop in person for the items she needed. Once Toranzo came to

the Tri-Cities and heard the same story from other moms, In Bloom, well, bloomed.

With a mission of providing high-quality products and accessories to support new mothers, In Bloom

has found some items flying off shelves. One of the most popular is Bravado bras for pregnant and breastfeeding moms. Also, the Babylegs line of leg and arm warmers are sought after, especially since celebrity moms discovered them. Babyjogger high-performance strollers are a big seller, too. You’ll also find handmade items by local stay-at-home moms featured in store.

In Bloom also offers workshops on site. Classes have been popular and sign-up is required. Some of their offerings include childbirth, breastfeeding, and prenatal yoga classes. They plan to add more work-shop topics soon.

Expectant mothers can sign up for the registry to help friends and family spoil them with gifts. Some of the items on the list may include bedding and décor for baby’s room, winter hats for baby, birthing gowns for before, during, and after labor, natural and toxin-free health and skin care products, and stylish diaper bags. You can create your registry online or print a list of items a mom is wanting.

With so much to offer, there’s no reason to head out of town or to the laptop for your needs and wants. In Bloom Maternity and Baby Boutique has got you and your little one covered.

whenever I ask my clients whether they want to lose weight or fat, the answer is always the same. They

want to lose fat! There are three steps to losing fat that must be followed in a very specific order.

The first and most important step in the process is nutrition. You need to know how many calories a day your body needs to use for energy. Take in either too much or too little, and your body will store the calories as fat. Knowing what percentage of calories come from protein, carbohy-drates, and fat is equally important.

The second step is weight training. Building lean muscle promotes overall health, develops strength and changes your body composition. The key compo-nent is training with enough intensity to stimulate muscle growth.

The third step would be to incorporate HIIT cardio into your weekly training program. (HIIT stands for "high intensity interval training" and means alternating periods of short, intense anaerobic exer-cise with less-intense recovery periods.) HIIT cardio is proven to oxidize more fat than other forms of cardio exercise.

If you’ve seen one wreath, you’ve seen them all. From classic pine to ribbon to ornaments to holiday cards, this traditional holiday hoop has been fashioned from just about every object imaginable. So treat your guests to something different this year: fabulous wreaths formed from unexpected items.

Door Décor

CinnA-mon stiCk WreAth

If you want your house to smell as good as your hand-made creation looks, then this may be the wreath idea for you.

It’s a simple, subtle and spicy indoor wreath that smells of holiday cheer.

best technique: Organize your cinnamon sticks before gluing to a flat wreath ring to avoid unexpected gaps. For a fuller final product, glue on a second layer and add a giant bow.

– Meagan Hines

YArn WreAth

Remember when you decided to learn how to knit, finished one half of a pot holder, gave up, and were left stuck with a basket full of yarn?

Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Put your unused yarn to use with this adorable bundled wreath.

best technique: Although the wreath can be stitched together, the finished product looks best when using hot glue and a flat wreath ring. Glue in additional decorations like ribbon, holly and ornaments.

Wine Cork WreAth

Let’s face it, we live in wine country. So let your wine pride shine with a door wreath that says, “I hope you brought a bottle, be-

cause I had to drain my supply to make this awesome wreath you’re looking at.”

best technique: Push sewing pins about halfway into the ends of as many corks as you can, then stick into a straw or styrofoam ring and secure with hot glue. Faux grapes in place of winterberries make for a witty addition.

Ethos Bakery on the RiseWood-fired pizzas and sweet treats have made Ethos Bakery a favorite of Tri-Cities residents over the past year.

cravinGs

For most new businesses, the first year is typically the hardest. For Angela Kora and Scott Newell, own-ers of Ethos Bakery in Richland, their

first year has brought them rapid growth and a long line of die-hard patrons.

Initially opening on October 1, 2011, Ethos intended only to bake bread in their massive, yet oddly inviting, wood-fired oven. Located next door to White Bluffs Brewing, they knew they had to add a compatible option or two to their menu to feed brewery visitors. Pizza was a last-minute addition to their menu, alongside a number of traditional baked goods and pastries. They quickly gained a fan base through delivering fresh-baked pizzas on order to White Bluffs visitors next door— right to the bar.

Now, just over a year later, they’ve opened a second location at the Richland Public Library. Ethos not only cooks up some of the area’s favorite pizzas, it’s now

kicking out exquisite desserts and even more savory creations. Cupcakes, brioche, and personal-sized cheesecakes are a few tantalizing selections one can expect when visiting the library location.

Pizza patrons can still rustle up a seasonal pie at the original location off of Highway 240 in Richland. Their current menu offers specialty pies such as the Johan, with horseradish sauce, roast beef, red onions and provolone, and the Rocket, with mozzarella, parmesan, fresh arugula and walnuts. The pizzeria is open Thursday through Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Ethos Bakery and Espresso, located at the library, is open Monday through Thurs-day from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Alongside a full menu of delectable espresso and cof-fee options, stop in for a variety of baked goods, like an assortment of cookies, cupcakes, breads and pastries.

The Mercer Estates tasting room, located in Prosser, offers more than a breathtaking location, stunning surroundings and

superlative wines. It tells of a four-gen-eration strong lineage of farmers and grape growers in Washington, and their shared missions of conservation and sustainability.

Through responsible farming, Mercer has cultivated the grapes that were made into award-winning wines, named by various publications and agencies. The 2009 Ode to Brothers blend (a Double Gold Seattle Wine Award win-ner) pays homage to the Rhone range with eclectic complexity. A newer wine, having only been released this past June, the blend is available for tasting and purchase at the Prosser estate.

Jessica Munell, Winemaker, utilizes her understanding of our region's sub-climate and soils to produce the

optimal finished product. Having worked at several other premier and well-known wineries in the area, in addi-tion to a stint in South Australia, Munell is able to blend her experience with the Mercer family’s high-quality harvests to make wines that should grace every Tri-Citian’s cellars.

Mercer Wines consists of three brands: Mercer Estates, Mercer Can-yons and Estate Reserve. All three have select varietals available for tasting in their lavish Prosser tasting room, nestled gorgeously within their country surroundings. Vineyard strolls through man-made paths are encouraged for those who wish to visit the tasting room Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through December. January and February visits may be made by appointment only, with seated tastings available for reservation in all months. – Meagan Hines

Coloring Contest Winners!

CENTURY 21 Tri-Cities held a coloring contest for children ages 0–11 throughout the month of November. One winner was selected from

each age group. We received dozens of beautiful en-tries, and choosing just three winners was extremely difficult! We selected as our winners Kimberly, age 3, Benjamin, age 6, and Ivy, age 8. It was fun to see everyone's different interpretations of our mascot, Roofus. We're keeping these coloring suggestions on hand for when Roofus needs a new coat of paint!

In addition to being featured in The Perfect Move Magazine, each winner received a $25 Toys 'R' Us giftcard! Perhaps these budding artists will use

their winnings for more art supplies!

Mid-Columbia men are dust-ing off their dancing shoes in preparation for Febru-ary’s Father-Daughter Ball.

This year’s theme is “Hillbilly Hoe-down.”

It began as a mother’s desire for her daughters to have a stronger relationship with their father. It has become a yearly event, as many Mid-Columbia dads look forward to “date night” with the special young ladies in their lives.

The original ball was held in the basement of Calvary Chapel with about 30 attendees.

Last year over 4,000 people at-tended. The Tri-Cities’ event is the 8th-oldest father-daughter ball in the nation and the most highly-attended.

Organizer Renae Quigley says the ball helps dads and girls create unfor-gettable memories while encouraging healthy relationships and boosting

girls’ self-esteem.She encourages men to invite any

special young ladies in their lives to be their companions for the evening.

Although formal dress is not required, many fathers and daughters choose to dress up for the occasion. Others wear fun matching outfits, while others dress in costumes that go with the evening’s theme.

Tickets for dads/companions are $25 each with any girls they accom-pany getting in free. Light appetizers and beverages will be served. Photo booths are available to capture the evening.

This year’s event is February 8th, 9th, and 10th at TRAC in Pasco. Tickets go on sale January 1 online only at fatherdaughterballcctc.com or traconline.com

Sorry, moms. Only dads and their princesses are allowed on this special evening! – Shannon Cartier
