FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK: Thank you to Bo and Molly Dupler and Floyd and April Gable for heading up the Fair Booth at the Perry County Fair. Thank you to the very many volunteers who made noodles and pies, who served at the Fair Booth, and who performed countless other tasks to make it a success. Many hands make light work, and I know many parents of St. Rose School children served many of their volunteer hours there last week.

Intercessory Prayer is an important part of our life of discipleship and our personal prayer. We’re constantly asking for prayers, and praying for people who have asked us. Like the example of Abraham or Jesus Himself, teaching His disciples to pray, this includes praying for others, or interceding for them. We can pray that God heals those we love, that He changes hearts, or that He help someone in need. This doesn’t mean that someone who doesn’t receive intercessory prayer is somehow forgotten by God, but it should encourage us to pray for those “who have no one to pray for them.” Intercessory prayer takes us out of ourselves, and it helps us focus on the needs of others. These prayers are answered when and how God sees fit for our salvation. See the Catechism Corner section for more about this type of prayer.

We’ll begin a monthly prayer service at Mount Aloysius this Wednesday. It’s just for the residents, but it’s good for our churches to know that the residents there are receiving some spiritual care. Many of them joyfully serve and work in our community. Let us pray for them, that they have the strength to carry out the Lord’s work in their lives.

In Christ Jesus,Fr. Hartge

THINK TANK ON POVERTY MEETING: Tuesday, July 30th, in the upper level of the St. Rose Community Building. A free meal will be provided at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. Representatives from Perry Behavioral Health and from Integrated Services will be present to discuss the services they provide to our community. There will also be updates on the county broadband initiatives and transportation issues. All residents in the county are welcome and encouraged to attend. We appreciate the valuable input that we have received from many people in the county and hope that more people will come forward and share their experiences. For questions or information about the Think Tank, please call Lesha at 740-334-2152.YOUTH GROUP: Annual Canoe Trip will be Monday, August 5th. We will meet at St. Rose School parking lot at 9:00 a.m. and should return around 2:00 p.m. Cost is $20.00 and please bring a sack lunch, as we will eat on the river. We need a couple of chaperones/drivers for this trip. Please contact the rectory or Franchesca Russell (740) 343-5306 if you’re interested in going and/or chaperoning. This is always a really fun trip, hope you can make it!

CATECHISM CORNER: 2634: Intercession is a prayer of petition which leads us to pray as Jesus did. He is the one intercessor with the Father on behalf of all men, especially sinners. He is “able for all time to save those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.” The Holy Spirit “Himself intercedes for us... and intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.”

2635: Since Abraham, intercession – asking on behalf of another has been characteristic of a heart attuned to God’s mercy. In the age of the Church, Christian intercession participates in Christ’s, as an expression of the communion of saints. In intercession, he who prays looks “not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others,” even to the point of praying for those who do him harm.

2761: The Lord’s Prayer “is truly the summary of the whole gospel.” “Since the Lord... after handing over the practice of prayer, said elsewhere, ’Ask and you will receive,’ and since everyone has petitions which are peculiar to his circumstances, the regular and appropriate prayer [the Lord’s Prayer] is said first, as the foundation of further desires.”

PERRY COUNTY FOOD PANTRY: We offer to our Senior citizens (age 60+) a monthly Commodities Box. Our Commodity supplemental Food Program provides a monthly box of Shelf-Stable Food to nutritionally at risk income-eligible senior citizens. We also are able to provide cheese, breads and other food needed, for the senior citizens of Perry County. Our problem at this time is that many seniors in our area do not know this exists, and that many do not realize they are eligible to receive this box. Boxes may be picked up in several location for convenience. We are federally funded. Applications may be made by calling 740-385-6813 or the Perry County Food Pantry, Monday, Wednesday or Friday, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at 740-342-2481.

DEATHS: Our love, prayers, and sympathy go out to the families of Tom Paxton, Emma Barry, and Sarah Denny. We are sorry for their loss. May Jesus bless the deceased with eternal warmth, everlasting life, and may they rest in the arms of the Risen Savior.

PSR (CCD) CATECHISTS: There will be a training at noon on Sunday, August 4th, in the 2nd and 3rd Classroom in St. Rose School. This will be for our important ministry of educating our youth in the faith we hold so dear. PSR (Parish School of Religion) will use a new program in all the parishes and St. Rose School. The publisher, Pflaum, will have a representative here to give some training with the material and answer your questions. Please make every effort to attend. The first day for PSR in all parishes will be on Sunday, September 8th.

BACK-TO-SCHOOL BASH: 3:00-7:00 p.m., Perry County Fairgrounds, Wednesday, August 7th.

DIOCESAN YOUNG ADULT RETREAT: Saturday, August 10th at Sts. Peter and Paul Retreat Center. This peer-led young adult retreat is aptly titled the “Spirit at Work Retreat” and will give young adults in their 20s and 30s an opportunity to step back and reflect on how God and the Holy Spirit is at work in their lives. There will be elements of prayer, talks, personal reflection, and small group sharing, each carefully considering God’s presence in our lives and how that informs our decision-making process during times of difficult decisions and transitions. The daylong retreat is only $25.00 per person, but there are also options to come out Friday evening to spend more time relaxing, reflecting, and connecting with other young adults. For more information and to register, go to https://columbuscatholic.org/young-adult-retreats.
