Paper presentation #1Prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis in the Province of Albay, Philippines

INTRODUCTIONThe conduct of this particular study in the province of Albay about the pinworm, the parasitic helminths that causes Enterobiasis. Pinworm is the most common worm infection in the United States. Children under 18, people who take care of infected children and people who are institutionalized are the people most likely to be infected. The prevalence can reach to 50%. The investigation done aims to accomplish the following objective of this study is to :a. Determine the prevalence of Enterobius vermicularis to the children living in the Province of Albay;b. Compare the occurrence of Enterobiasis in the three (3) districts of the Province of Albay; andc. Correlate the presence of pinworm to the sociodemographic characteristics, and hygienic practices of the respondents.METHODOLOGYThe researcher uses three different techniques in gathering essential data such as the survey method, the cellulose tape method and microscopy. The survey included questions pertaining to the socio-economic profile and hygienic practices of the 2202 respondent ages 3-10 from 3 districts and 16 municipalities of Albay province. The researcher employed peri-anal swabbing method and microscopy to collect the data needed and to detect infected children of the said parasite.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONSChi-square analysis revealed that the area where the children resides in terms of district, the age, the educational status of the father and the number of children in the family were found significantly related to the pinworm infection. Other socio-demographic factors and hygienic practices of the respondents were not significantly related with the infection of pinworm based from statistical analysis. Other endo and ectoparasites were observed in the collected samples.RECOMMENDATIONSThe following recommendation was given: regular deworming intervention and assessing pinworm and other intestinal parasites to children;Conduct a parasitological study that will determine or assess the prevalence of other intestinal parasites and ectoparasites; More attention must be given in the eradication of the parasite infestation, through:Information disseminationand conducting trainings and seminars. This paper/ research will give us an insight for assessing public health issues especially parasite infection in rural areas, how the government addressed problems and the annual or regular assessment of parasitic infection and eradication of the parasites infestations in children. The methodology employed has provided accurate details on the correlation of the significant relation on the different factors affecting the infestation. Although some recommendations like the study of other ecto and endo parasites detected has left evaluators in question as to the origin or the source of ectoparasites it will open up possibilities for further research and studies. The scope of this study is a good collaboration of different researcher from different districts.

Paper presentation #2Prevalence of Schistosoma Japonicum infection in Barangay Magrafil Gonzaga, CagayanIntroductionSchistosomiasis or Bilhariazis affects almost 240 million people worldwide, and more than 700 million people living in endemic areas. In asia the major endemic foci of human schistosomiasis infection are found in China, Philippines and small pockets of Indonesia. In the Philippines, the disease affects about 12 million Filipinos and about 2.5 million are directly exposed. In 2002 and 2005 respectively, two new endemic foci were reported in the northernmost (Gonzaga,Cagayan) and central (Calatrava, Negros Occidental) parts of the country. The research aim to evaluate the spread of schistosomiasis, update the recent status regarding the prevalence of schistosomiasis and eventually develop a new strategy in the control of infestations of parasites.METHODOLOGYThe following methods were used for the research to take place: Seeking the approval and consent of Municipal Health Office: Random Sampling based on the list provided by the Municipal Health Office: Collection of stool sample with the help of Barangay Health Workers. Survey form was rendered for the socio-economic profile to establish the correlation.Laboratory technique included the Kato-Katz and FECT were performed on stool samples and statistical analysis using Fishers exact test. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION24.05% prevalence rate was measured and established a no association with any demographical data included. During the presentation, current studies were made in those particular area of Cagayan due to the reported high cases of infection. But the research itself poses several problem based on their sampling methods, they feel that the repondents are not sufficient to establish the correlation and prevalence of infection. They also recommended malacological studies and zoonotic potential of the infection due to infected water. But no further studies or results indicated the relation of water contamination from the analysis made by the researcher .Again this is a good platform for further research on the said endemic area.POSTER Paper #7 Prevalence of Schistosoma Japonicum infection in Barangay Magrafil Gonzaga, Cagayan1. The title, objectives and methodology are properly aligned in determining the prevalence of a certain rural or endemic area in Cagayan and establishing the current status and control for schistosomiasis. In the methodology employed, the technique follows the gold standard and the statistical test used can evaluate data as valid and reliable. Although the samples are focus on the egg. There were questions on the EPG (eggs per gram) and the classification of intensity how they will be used in the evaluation for the result and discussion. Another objective is the update of recent status of infection but based on the data and the sample collected it is not sufficient to establish the current status due to sampling technique applied. Since the result is non-significant the third objective was insignificant having a control measure of the infection.2. The result of a low prevalence rate and the no significant difference was establish between the demographic data and infection, though all of the aspects of creating an association of all data presented was clear and concise but irrelevant and the objective was not attain.3. The conclusion is not convincing probably because of the number of respondents used in the research the turnout is low and the results is a low prevalence rate which are not reliable.4. Focus not just on the schistosoma egg and adult as well, discussion of the source of infection and ways on controlling was not mention. The extent and effect of infection on the ways of living people in Barangay Magrafil was also not presented. There should also be a control group to compare the results done like a comparison of two endemic area.

POSTER PAPER #6DETECTION OF PARASITES IN Chanos chanos (MILKFISH) AND Oreochromis niloticus (NILE TILAPIA) FROM LAGUNA DE BAY

1. The benefits of fish to man was given emphasis on the introduction if the main staple fish found in Laguna bay will be susceptible to infestation then it may affect the food production and also human health. The condition of Laguna Lake and its fauna was the main concern of the study. The Title , objectives and methodology employed in this research are accurately studied, the used of laboratory technique in determining and detecting parasites was accomplish. The consultation with FHMQAS made the research more reliable and valid.2. Based from the results, several parasites was detected which are considered as major pathogens that can cause intestinal disturbance and it was achieved in this study.3. The conclusion was successful since they were able to detect several parasites that are essential in determining its impact to health of the consumer since the two types of fishes studied was considered as part of their daily diet.4. The different parasites were alarmingly high in tilapia and low in milkfish, I would like to know the resistance of milkfish to some parasites and the sources of this parasites whether due to water condition or pollutants. The effect of the parasites if consume by humans. How many percent should be consumed for it to have an ill effect on the consumer. Also if there are ways employed for the control of this parasites.
