  • Governor William Bradford invited Chief Massasoit and his tribesmen for the 1 st Thanksgiving Feast. They were thankful for help the Indians gave them. The Indians taught them how to survive by teaching them how to cultivate the land. The celebration in 1621 lasted for three days and included games and food.

  • George Washington our first president proclaimed the first 'National Day of Thanksgiving' in 1789. Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, campaigned to make Thanksgiving a National Holiday in 1827 and succeeded. Abraham Lincoln our 16 th president announced Thanksgiving to be national holiday in his proclamation on October 3, 1863.

  • actually stems from an European tradition. In the 1920's many of Macy's department store employees were first-generation immigrants in America.   • The best part of this holiday is that our family gets together for a meal to give thanks for all that we have. I hope this is one tradition that never ends.
