President’s Message

Dear Fellow Quilters,

It’s interesting the things life hands you. I’m not particularly a religious person but have always thought that things happen for a reason. My life was abruptly changed when my daughter needed emergency brain surgery. While her prognosis is great, others in the hospital at the same time do not have the same prognosis. My daughter is home now involved in a very slow recovery. I certainly thank Vice President Susie Hardy for leading the April general and board meetings, so I could be with my daughter.

And now turning my thoughts toward the 2016 Quilt Show (April 30th and May 1st). It is only a short time away. There will be many beautiful quilts on display. Jeanie Ferguson is the featured quilter and will display a wide variety of her wonderful work. There are always obstacles to overcome with a production of this size. The credit for this being a success belongs to co-chairs Marjorie McConnell and Jeanne Pincha-Tulley. They have done an absolutely fantastic job finding ways to make everything work. Without all of the volunteers there couldn’t be a quilt show, so thank you so much for giving your time to make this one of our best quilt shows ever.

Diane Klose, President

Pine Tree Quilt Guild Scholarship

2016 Scholarship Awarded to Anya Steuer

The PTQG Scholarship Committee has met and unanimously agreed to award this year's $1000 scholarship to Anya Steuer, of Bear River High School. We were very impressed with not only her

outstanding academic achievements and numerous volunteer activities, but the personal and artistic goals she has set for herself. In Anya's own words, " I never want my life to be boring or easy or

simple, I want to make it challenging, complicated, and astounding." We are thrilled to support this worthy young woman in achieving these goals and look forward to

meeting her at our June Guild meeting.

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

Please join us at Eskaton Senior Living on the THIRD TUESDAY of each month, 9:00 – 3:00 unless otherwise noted. Eskaton is off of Ridge Road. Take the Gold Flat exit, one mile up the road. There is a sign on the right, then a left turn lane.

COMING SOON ! ! ! FOSTER YOUTH will be graduating in May and we are seeking three or four more teen-age quilts by May 10 for the 2016 graduates. A generous twin or a double size should keep them cozy as they go out on their own. If you would like to make a mesh tote, please let me know and I will have supplies ready. These were a great hit with the “kids” last year and it is a great “twofer” – we can pack the quilt/pillowcase and they have something to tote laundry or other items.

KATHY”S KITS – We have lots of kits – quilts and pillowcases – ready for you to sew. We also have Block Party pieces made from a variety of fun fabric left-overs that will make 10-inch or larger blocks. Simply sew precut pieces together into a block and turn them in to CS. As the finished blocks accumulate they will be assembled into tops for baby, lap, or twin size quilts. How easy is this?

2016 CS DATES – third TUESDAY at ESKATON, 9:00 – 3:00 unless otherwise noted.May 17 June 21 July 19 August 16 September 20 October 18 November 15 December – NO CS

Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? I will deliver a kit, quilt sandwich, or quilts to bind to you to work on at home – call or email me. If you know of someone who needs a quilt, please contact me with the details.

Thank you, Marjorie McConnell

Patchwork Star for May 2016 Shelley vonBrincken

“No winter lasts forever. No spring skips its turn.”

Hal Borland

Bringing a tear to her eye, Shelley recounts the awesome relationship she had with her beloved “Daisy”, a beautiful horse, half American saddlebred and half quarter horse. She recounts joyful moments with this very special horse. Awesome trail rides were taken through Pebble Beach and Point Reyes. Her inimitable “Daisy” lived to be 37 years old! Presently, two dogs reside with Shelley and husband, John. One is half Rottweiler and half Australian shepherd and the other a Boston terrier.

With vivacious reds, tawny browns and muted chocolates, Shelley's home is a veritable art gallery. Equine selections by Carmel's Rosamonde and Arizonian Charles Davison with a sprinkling of Tomas' unique metal paintings capture your senses. Indian themes are also represented. Oooohs, aaaahs and wows are unstoppable. Shelley is currently a representative for 17 famed artists, selling in several galleries. She, too, captures your heart with her own paintings of horses. Portraying changing moods and silent reflections, countless canvasses reveal an insatiable appetite for her closeness to the mind and spirit of the beloved horse. They become one.

With a darling petite metal Elna Lotus, circa 1970, Shelley unpretentiously indulges her skills with quilting. The subject? Horses mostly. With a distinct air of sentimentality, Shelley's quilts are mostly medium sized, covering tables, beds, couches or chairs. Traditionally simple, her quilts pack a lot of punch. If there's a pretty horse fabric out there, she's got it! In some, horses are robust and winsome, in others they are celebrating Christmas, in another they depict prized race horse winners. Butternut tans, palomino lights paired with rusty reds convey a happy heart. Shelley's painterly talents and interior design qualifications translate well for her indulgence into the quilt world. Some bunny quilts are sewn for her granddaughter and other child-like themes are sewn for Linus.

Detained by a less-than-inviting visit to the surgeon for a hip replacement, Shelley quips: “Who is gonna sew the binding on this quilt if I die in surgery?” Sandra Bruce is currently working on seven new ones!! As most of us know well, the peacefulness of quilting, the joy of accomplishment, and the passion for process, has allowed each of us to successfully dodge the world's ugly slings and arrows. We denounce the pettiness of life; we underscore the need for sewing time; we endlessly rhapsodize on a quilt's consummate charm.

No one and no obstacle has put Shelley's creativity on a diet. Her quilts have soul. They tell a story and they convey all the matters that matter---for her and for “Daisy”. Jeanie Ferguson Patchwork Star Reporter
