Meeting Location Day of the Month & Time February Guild Meeting Dates February 2015

Greetings Guild Members. I thought you might enjoy this news about quilting.

For a while I suspected that quilting had some special mental health benefits. In my relatively short time quilting (13 years so far), I had not personally observed any cases of dementia in quilters despite the advanced age of many of them.

This past year, my theory was given some scientific backing. As reported on NPR in May, researchers at the Park Aging Mind Laboratory (University of Texas in Dallas) looked at the effects of different enjoyable and enriching activities on memory. Compared with doing brain games or engaging in social events, the best activities for improving mental function were learning digital photography and QUILTING!

According to neuroscientist and lead author of the study, Denise Park, learning to make quilts is a mentally challenging task that is both demanding and complex. Scott Kaufman, a neuropsychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, also pointed out that while brain games help short term memory, challenging tasks like quilting improve entire brain networks. In particular, I can attest to the mental gymnastics required by Sandra Bruce's class, Material Matrix. (Sandra coincidentally brought this news item to my attention.)

I find this news very encouraging, all the more reason to take quilting classes to exercise the brain and stay mentally healthy! If you want to know more about this research, go to the Park Aging Mind Laboratory's website: agingmind.utdallas.edu/research .

On a slightly different but related note: to help friends keep their minds sharp, introduce a friend to quilting by bringing her (or him) to our New Member Event at our March 3rd meeting. Let them know that no quilting experience is necessary and in fact, joining the guild is a great way to learn how to quilt. Let's share the bounty!

And don't forget our mind enhancing opportunity with Pat Fryer's presentation, "Small But Mighty Quilt Patterns," at our February 3rd meeting. See you there!

HOME  WORKSHOP

We are planning some new and exciting classes for 2015 and look forward to you signing up for these.      To start the year INA GIBSON will be teaching her TRIAD  CRYSTAL quilt

class.  This class filled up very quickly with enough members signed up to warrant a second class, so INA will repeat this class in APRIL\MAY.     Eleanor is planning a special workshop in March that many of you have asked for. We will share the details and have sign-ups at the February guild meeting.       If you haven't taken a Home Workshop, think about joining us. This is a FREE Workshop, taught by a member for members. Its held the 3rd. Thursday of each month from 9:30- 2:30 at the SDA Church.       We always welcome your input. If you have a favorite pattern or technique you could share ..think about teaching a class.                       Any questions, contact one of us. Until Then.........Keep on Quilting!

Betty and Eleanor SIGN-UP at the Guild meeting to get your SUPPLY LIST. Any questions contact Betty Maddox or Eleanor Sagely,

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

Community Service and Drop In and Sew resumed on Thursday, January 15, 2015, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osborne Road, Grass Valley. Based on previous years’ needs, we have established a goal of 500 quilts and 250 pillowcases for 2015. The bulk of the quilts we distribute are baby, toddler, and lap throws; larger quilts are needed for the Foster Youth project and individuals and families that lose their homes to fire or face other life altering acts. Although most of the quilts are distributed in December, quilts are given out year round in response to community need. Please contact me if you know of someone who needs a quilt. Want to help but cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? Please call or email me.

New in 2015 . . .

Monthly Quilt Kits – each month a different kit, made by Kathy Biggi, will be offered. Disappearing Nine Patch kits are available in January. Many were checked out at the January

guild meeting, the remaining few will be available at CS Thursday, the 15th. Kits will include the pieces for the top, the back, and binding. You may do only the top but ask that you return all of the “parts”. If you would like to quilt the quilt, we will provide batting. To help us know how many kits we have out, a sign out process is being implemented. We asks that they be returned within three months. Walker bag and pillow case kits, easy 15-20 minute projects, are also available. The February quilt kits feature Villa Rosa Designs by Pat Fryer.

Community Service Drawings begin in February . . . Each time you volunteer, donate, help CS you will receive a red ticket. Keep your ticket for the drawing at the next regular guild meeting.

March Mixer – everyone donating a half yard or more will receive a ticket for a special drawing.

Community Service …. continued

Current Projects – three projects we need help with: Foster Youth – seven or eight quilts for high school graduates. We would like to include a pillow case with each quilt (pattern directions below) and present the two items in a tote bag. Sign up for one, two, or all items. Need by end of April. CoRR - two baby and two toddler quilts for children of the clients going through recovery. These quilts will be kept at CORR for use as needed. Need as soon as possible. RSVP – lap quilts for homebound seniors, one of our efforts to increase outreach. Need by November. If you donate an item for one of these projects, please note this on your contribution.

Apprentices Needed – I often hear from members how important CS is, that it is the heart of the Guild. To continue this work, we need your help. What can you do? Work with Kathy to make kits; learn from Ina how to cut the batt or log and prepare the quilts for storage; assist Githa and Betty with quilt backs; help Neova keep fabrics sorted and identified; support Sue sewing labels or backs; bring your machine (or use a CS machine) and quilt smaller quilts the “simply quilt” way.

Quilt Sizes Needed: CS welcomes all quilt / quilt top donations. We have found that the variety of sizes makes it difficult for us to properly identify them for distribution. When possible, please help us make the best decisions by using these guidelines (if you are not using a kit): 40 x 40 Baby / Wheelchair – we can then use 45” fabric for a back 45/51 x 55 Lap, Throw, Toddler 62 x 72/84 Twin 65/76 x 80/84 Double 75/84 x 84/120 Queen/King

Donations – pillowcase kits have become quite popular. What else can you complete in 20 – 30 minutes at your sewing machine? The contrasting band is made with WOF strips, something CS does not generally have. Your odd strips of 9” x 42” fabric can be used for the trim pieces. Do you have small pieces that could be cut into 5” squares or 2 ½” x 5” strips? If so, please cut them and add them to our pool for blocks and borders. Donations accepted at Guild meetings and CS Thursdays.

HEADS UP! ! ! Wednesday, 04 February has been added as a CS workday. We desperately need quilts quilted the “simply quilt” way – “simply quilt” corner to corner, stitch in the ditch, meander, or other easy quilt method. Design help will be available. CS has four machines for use or you may bring your own. Doors open at 9:00 and will close about 3:00 – come for the day or an hour or two. There will be homemade treats to keep you fortified; do bring a lunch if you will be with us into the afternoon.

Linda Keels, Patchwork Star for February 2015

“We're not rich and famous, but we have priceless grandchildren.” This poignant maxim closest to Linda's and Dennis' hearts hangs prominently on a sign near their entry. Monday through Thursday Linda stays in Woodland to care for her one year old grandson, Hunter. Having been a nanny in her former life, she adores this grandmotherly role. With down time to fill Linda is considering a visit to Woodland's quilt guild. She had lived in Woodland and also in Davis in the past. Together, she and Dennis have seven grandchildren—none too far away. The two oldest girls, Caroline and Alyssa, are into the design aspect of quilting. Heavily into fashion, one granddaughter said, as she handed back her birthday quilt, exclaiming: “This just doesn't feel comfortable.” Whew! Linda, non-plussed and calm, introduced careful planning, designing and arranging of her patchwork pieces for the girls' next project. Now the girls are “hooked” and have a vested and sincere interest in their quilts' construction methods.

“I just love bright colors,” claimed Linda. Kiwi flavored greens, jaunty vermillion, Kool-Aid orange and other riotous gumdrop flavors blend nicely in her quilts, like constant birdsong sweetening the air. A backdrop of robin's egg blue walls with her all white cabinetry in the sewing studio present the perfect recipe for contentment. Several medium sized white cabinets are pristine, orderly and sophisticated. Dennis wanted to add more color to her studio, but Linda insisted it was not needed. Plenty of dolls, mini quilts and cheerful artifacts decorate the walls and tables. She has a stunning adjustable and rolling island that becomes a 72”x40” table, including ample storage. Linda just rolls it out into her 30' x 40' living area for the Cotton Club ladies to share and cut. How convenient! “Good friends are like witches, wickedly fun and highly spirited.” With yet another pearl of wisdom describing her best buddies, Linda enjoys a special quilting kinship with Jan Christiansen. Both are expert embroiderers. Cotton Club ladies meet twice monthly.

A stately Husqvarna/Viking Designer embroidery machine resides front and center in her studio. A plentiful collection of floppy disks and booklets featuring boy dolls and girl dolls are Linda's favorites. Stunning outfits including hats, bows and ruffles can be chosen. I was blown away by their infinite and miniscule detail. Shiny rayon Madeira embroidery spools provide unending choices, spanning the color spectrum. The paper doll collection is by Martha Pullen designs.

An exceptional oak quilt rack with four swinging arms graces the living room wall. Dennis, an accomplished woodworker, presented it to Linda this past Christmas. It's a lovely piece of furniture, allowing her to rotate seasonal quilt choices throughout the year.

“My favorite color is turquoise, but I never seem to quilt with it.” Famous last words, Linda! But, alas, all the ingredients are there. It's to be a fait accompli. Just switch out one of those raucous kiwi prints and voila! Linda also submits to a nagging dust allergy—prompting her to consider wearing a mask to keep from coughing while enjoying her sewing. She'll not let these little things get the best of her!

We Need More Rubber Bands

Many of us are like wheelbarrows, not much good unless pushed.

Some of us are like canoes, we need to be paddled.

Others are like kites, if not kept on a string they will fly away.

Some are like balloons, filled with air and ready to blow any minute. Then there are those of us who are like footballs,

you never know which way they will bounce. Some are even like trailers,

they need to be pulled to every meeting and project.

Then there are those who are like rubber bands, they give all they can.

They stretch their time accordingly, hold things together, and bounce back to help even more.

Volunteers Needed!

Are you ever bored? Do you ever wonder what you want to do on a given day?

Throughout the year members of the Quilt Guild ask for help. Our membership numbers are over 200, and yet each year we have problems filling positions: not just Board positions, but others which are all part of making the Quilt Guild

function effectively in carrying out its mission. If you answered ‘yes’ to either of the above

questions, take a little time to consider how you might help make YOUR Guild a better, more

effective group….

I realize that many members probably laughed at those two questions, they’re the ones who would

like a few more hours in the day! If you’re one of those, and your time is taken up by

Quilt Guild activities, thank you!
