constantly on social media. Someone is always winning. When finishing my Ph.D., I posted my signed thesis, but nothing alluded to the years, the tears, the lack of sleep, hard work, agony, fear, and all that went into it. I say this because young horses are the same way. There will always be the great photos which fill you with pride online, but it is really not about the snapshot its about the whole picture valuing the years, the tears, the joy, the agony, and the long, slow, winding road to making up your youngster into a horse you cant wait to spend hours, days, and years with.

Im so excited to introduce myself and this style feature to you! My name is Brandi Cyrus, and I wear a lot of hats in the entertainment industry: as a TV host, musician, model, fashion blogger it seems like a lot but they all coincide with each other. However, the thing that I am the most proud of is that I am an equestrian. Ive been riding for over twenty years and I love it as much today as the day I started.

Ive evolved from riding the trails with my dad as a kid, to Pony Club and competitive Eventing as a teenager, and now in the past several years have transitioned into the Hunter/Jumper A circuit.

My current horse is the one you see with me here. Her name is Everlasting (called Ever around the barn) and she is a seven-year-old Trakehner/Thoroughbred mare that I bought almost two years ago as a training prospect.

Since then, she has gone from learning the very basics of training to competing in the low Adult Amateur jumper division, and she is so athletic and such a fast learner I have no doubt she will continue to move up quickly!

I travel a ton for work, but when Im home in Nashville I am 100% dedicated to Ever and her training and spend anywhere from 2-4 hours a day at the barn with her. It is SO rewarding to bring a young


horse along. Ive always had green horses and enjoyed having a project, but this is the first time Ive started from scratch. She really has become such a fantastic little horse and I couldnt be happier with her!

So as I mentioned Im a fashion blogger I have a site called Style Native where I blog about my favorite street style outfits, and the occasional red carpet or other events that I attend. Ive always loved the idea of style there is so much creative room to express your personality and who you

are through what you wear. I chose the name because I love the meaning of the word NATIVE which is innate and belonging to a persons character. What you wear should reflect exactly who you are!

I started my blog about a year ago, and since day one I knew I wanted to not only blog about street wear, but also equestrian attire. After all, if Im honest Im probably in riding clothes more often than street clothes, and although Im all about the traditional essence of equestrian fashion I do think there is room to personalize it and make it your own. Especially when it comes to schooling attire! So thats what this is Ill show you how I put my own spin on my riding outfits and share some of my favorite products with you guys!

OUTFIT 1 WHAT IM WEARING: Bizi Bee Performance Polo, Equine Couture Regatta Breeches, Eiki Custom Dress Boots, and my own belt.

I love how lightweight and airy this shirt is! Its just trendy enough with the neon green logo, but still has a classic polo shirt silhouette. This is clearly

a schooling attire outfit, so I paired it with navy breeches that are super low rise for a modern fit. The dark navy makes for a great contrast with the green logo on the shirt. I accessorized with my own metallic navy studded belt to give the look some personality! I love crossing some of my street wear into my Eq wear!

OUTFIT 2 WHAT IM WEARING: Bizi Bee Performance Quarter Zip, Kathryn Lily Competition Shirt in Lilac, Tailored Sportsman Low Rise Breeches, and Eiki Custom Dress Boots.

This is the type of attire I like to wear in the lower level jumper classes I do with Ever. You can get away with being way more casual than this, but I like to wear something that still looks polished so I feel turned out for a horse show! I layered a lilac-colored competition shirt under this silver zip up shirt because I like the casual look of the zip up with the white cuffs and collar of the one underneath. I also love seeing just that hint of lilac underneath the silver this color combo looks so great on Evers grey coat, and if you look close my Ogilvy half pad has lilac piping too! Since Ive got a lot going on up top I stuck with traditional beige breeches and a simple wide black belt. I also want to RAVE about my tall boots theyre my favorite Ive ever had and are actually super reasonably-priced for custom boots. I went with a simple dress boot with a square toe, and a patent trim along the top of the boot for a little glam. Just enough to stand out without sacrificing traditional style!

Tylor Nowell of Sonoma, CA won The Plaid Horse Top Scoring Junior award at the USHJA International Hunter Derby at Blenheim Equisports on April 10th aboard the 8 year old Belgian warmblood Nonchalant. The pair is trained by the Meadowgrove team of Dick Carvin, Susie Schroer and Zazou Hoffman. This was the first international derby Nowell had attempted and, as the only junior rider making the cutoff for the handy round, she gave high praise to the competition. I love to show at Blenheim. We moved our horses south to be able to show in the highly competitive show circuit down here. I love showing hunters on the grass, she said. The jumps in the derby were beautiful and big, but I was confident in my horse. The goal was just to put in a solid trip and we stuck to our plan and it worked out, Nowell said of her handy round, which moved her up two spots to finish 10th overall. Tylor is a sophomore at Sonoma Academy, and plans to turn her focus to jumpers as her junior career progresses, with an ultimate goal of competing on the Young Riders team. By Katie Cook

For the last several decades, the winners in the US hunter and equitation divisions have been dominated by horses imported from Europe. With the practice being so commonplace, it seems that it ought

to be simple. However, it can be anything but. Horses in Europe are trained as jumpers, with no active hunter industry or horse showing. Customers from the US see them in full jumper form and have to decide whether they would make a good hunter, bring them home, and train them for that.

It is a gamble and for some it pays off the horses value increases exponentially and it can often be sold again for many times the original selling price. But its just as common that taking such a gamble doesnt pay off, making it unlikely that a family with one horse

could afford to take on that level of risk. Roy Wilten, owner of Stal Wilten, seeks

to favor the buyer in that equation and is successfuly taking the gamble out of shopping for and importing European horses.

On a quaint farm of 18 stalls in Nieuwleusen, Holland, Roy Wilten changes the approach completely. With horses custom-trained for life in the American market, Wilten has the only hunter barn in The Netherlands.

I think one of the most important aspects of Stal Wilten is the fact that we represent our horses in the hunter-type way; the problem for most people when coming to Europe is that they dont have the experience of watching a jumper go around

and really being able to see it fitting into a hunter- or equitation-type job, says Roy Wilten.

Taking the guesswork out of purchasing a hunter from The Netherlands has been appealing to the likes of John French, Hope Glynn, Daniel Geitner, Mary Morrison, and Nick Karazissis, Jr., many of whom have purchased horses sight unseen and who have gone on to quickly win in the American Show ring.

Kristen Hiller, whose Hiller Farms LLC owns Foreign Affair the Pre-Green Circuit Champion of HITS Thermal said, Roy has a great eye for picking beautiful horses with great dispositions and talent. It

is wonderful to have a sense of trust when buying a horse.

The setup at Stal Wilten is a significant advantage in that it allows his horses to become acclimated to their hunter and equitation jobs prior to coming to the US. By having access to an indoor and outdoor full of hunter jumps, they are trained for success in any situation they might find in the US. Stal Wiltens jumps, all of which speak to some aspect of Dutch heritage, are probably the most elaborate and beautiful hunter jumps anywhere.

We have the experience to know what about a jumper would make it a good horse for the US, says Wilten.

Safety is also a huge priority in the success of Stal Wiltens horses. Because of the high demand for amateur horses in the US, they are intentionally put into situations they

show ring. Roy takes his clients and horses to an

array of different horse shows while he is home in the Netherlands, ranging from small schooling shows to CSI***** shows.

The core team at Stal Wilten also includes visits from some of the best up-and-coming professionals in the US, including visits to work with young horses from Sean Leckie, Stevie Sorenson, and Shawn Casady. Between Roy, visiting professionals, several

might face in their new lives and are ridden often by amateurs. Stal Wilten horses are so well-prepared for the US market that Stal Wilten can offer a successful lease program directly from Europe as well.

How the USEF Can Revive the Sport Through the AffiliatesBY ARMAND LEONE I recently attended a USHJA Town Hall by Bill Moroney with exhibitors at a top quality hunter jumper show in my area. Information was exchanged about programs and rule changes, but much of the discussion concerned the loss of smaller B and C rated shows and decrease in USEF membership. The increased costs of showing at USEF recognized shows is putting the sport out of reach for more people each year. The plethora of fees and date licensing are major factors in these increased costs for exhibitors. Attendance at unrecognized shows is growing in response. As the USEF has increased its focus on the international high performance programs and Olympic Games, its ability to provide for the national and grassroots end of the sport has diminished. It is time for the USEF affiliates to step in and address the unmet needs of the horse owners and exhibitors who do not compete at the upper end of the sport. It is useful to look at how the USEF developed its relationships with the affiliates and how the affiliates can help to fill the void at the national level caused by the need for USEF to commit resources to the international programs.

The USEF is designated as the National Governing Body (NGB) for equestrian sport by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and is the organization solely responsible for training, selecting and funding our U.S. athletes for Olympic, World Championship and International Team competition. Protected Competitions that are solely the responsibility of the USEF include not only the Olympics, WEG and PanAm events, but all international team events including selection trials and qualifying events. As the NGB, the USEF is also required to regulate our equestrian sport, which it does in part by licensing equestrian competitions to coordinate the calendar, by enforcing the rules of fair play and by protecting the welfare of the horse. The duties of fielding international teams and regulating the sport are non-delegable and must be done by the USEF under its NGB obligations.

The FEI Affiliates assist the USEF in its mission to develop Olympic and World Championship athletes by developing a pipeline for athletes. Although the USEF has overall responsibility for a pipeline from the grassroots to the international level in the international disciplines, it is not required to directly

manage programs that only involve national competition below the national championship levels. The USEF oversees the 3 FEI affiliates that govern the national Olympic discipline programs: the U.S. Dressage Association, U.S. Eventing Association and U.S. Hunter Jumper Association. The 4 FEI affiliates that govern the national non-Olympic programs are the American Endurance Riding Council, American Vaulting Association, U.S. Combined Driving Association and the U.S. Reining Association. The USEF is also responsible for supporting and coordinating our international Paraequestrian program and working with the U.S. Paraequestrian Association. The USEF exercises varying degrees of control over its affiliates in calendar and rule enforcement, to make sure there is a pipeline for athletes from the grass roots to the Olympic level in all the international disciplines.

The National Breed and Discipline Affiliate organizations manage the non-international equestrian breeds and performance categories. The USEF assists these affiliates to support their members and their breed and discipline activities. However, the USEF has no USOC responsibilities to provide any oversight or funding of these activities. Prior to the USEF coming into being it was the American Horse Shows Association, and the breeds and disciplines were the backbone of the AHSA. The focus of the AHSA was enforcing fair competition, medication rules and providing dates for


the national show calendar. It was a members organization which used its dues for providing services to members. The AHSA did not have to expend financial or human resources for the Olympic effort. The Olympic effort and high performance international disciplines were funded and managed by the United States Equestrian Team (USET).

Before USEF was formed, Dressage and Eventing had developed very organized discipline associations at the grassroots level with little assistance from the AHSA. The AHSA was focused more on the more traditional American show horse disciplines. The USCTA, now the USEA, developed strong grass roots for Eventing in the U.S., as did the USDA for Dressage. Combined Driving, Endurance. Paraequestrian, Reining and Vaulting also developed similar affiliate organizations and had only a tangential relationship with the AHSA during their formative years. Jumping had no separate affiliate organization prior to formation of the USEF, as these functions were handled within the AHSA. The formation of USHJA was part of the birthing of USEF. Before the USEF formed, each affiliate organization focused on its members national sport needs, while the USET focused on fielding international and Olympic teams. This changed in 2004 when the USEF became the NGB and the United States Equestrian Team Foundation became its funding organization.

Different affiliates have different amounts of control over the national show calendar and sport, largely as a results of the way they developed during the AHSA years. The USDA and USEA have significant independence and control over large parts of their national programs, as do the other 4 non-Olympic Disciplines. However, the USHJA, with the most USEF members of any affiliate, still has its calendar and sport controlled largely by the USEF. Unfortunately when the USEF took responsibility for being the NGB from the USET, it had to divert resources to the international programs at the expense of the lower and grass roots level programs. The void created is best filled by the affiliates assuming more control over their calendars and national programs.

The role of the affiliates in administering their national programs must increase to stop an exodus of participants at the lower levels. The affiliates can address the needs of national and

grass roots exhibitors and can help them maintain needed financial and local access to the sport. It does little good if there are on only 4 or 5 epicenters for equestrian competition across the country. It does no good when the cost of showing is unaffordable or competition venues are too distant. The declining numbers of USEF members and the increase in unrecognized competition attendance result from the rising cost and lack of attention to the needs of exhibitors at the bottom of the sport.

The good and the bad news for our national sport is that the USEF is the NGB. By having to focus on fielding, training and funding the international high performance, attention and service have been diverted away from its core membership. The affiliate organizations are in the best position to fill this void and make owning and competing with horses accessible and affordable again. While some affiliates, like USEA, AERC and the AHA, have established control over their national calendars, some have not. The time has come for all the affiliates to take a more active role in managing their competition calendars and to make sure the needs of the sport at the national and lower level are met. If they dont, membership numbers in the federation and its affiliates will continue to fall.

From October 8th through October 17, 2015, the competition will be intense, the activity virtually non-stop, and the experience incomparable. Competitors are currently focused on qualifying to compete at the 70th Pennsylvania National Horse Show and the management is focused on operations (think footing), sponsors and entertainment.

has local roots and global exposure. While the audience is dressed

more comfortably than the gowns and tuxedos of the past, it still

time many breeds and disciplines competed at the show now the

Hunters and Jumpers have center stage along with the Medal Finals.

filled with local industry, displays is

now a colorful mall with amazing

the historic arena and seeing the

names of past winners on the wall.

JUNIOR WEEKEND (October 8 11,

2015) welcomes pony and junior

hunters, the Randolph College/USEF

Junior Jumper Championships and

the Pessoa/US National Hunter Seat

Medal Finals presented by Randolph

College all competing in the main

arena. Outside the arena families

will enjoy Discovery Day, Saturday

October 10th, Selfie Stops, and, of

course, the shopping.

As summer fast approaches and we prepare for our outdoor show season, many thoughts come into play, GrrrI hate showing in the heat; this is a new venue and I am not sure how my horse is going to react; I hope I am not in the ring and the train comes by or I have heard horror stories about the footing.

Environmental factors detract from our performance when we encounter an environment that we believe prevents us from functioning in an optimal manner, or in the manner to which we are accustomed. An example: If the skies suddenly open up and it begins to pour during our ride, we may lose focus, and our energy may become depleted.

Environmental factors are those that are related to the setting and/or conditions in which you will perform. We dont exist or ride in a vacuum. In addition to the people around us, there are tangible physical external elements that affect our energy and performance. Our environment will affect our stress level, as well as how willing and enthusiastic we are to perform.

Though environmental factors arent always under our control (we cant stop the rain from falling), we can learn to control the effect they have on us. Environmental factors can include:

The Less Than Ideal Show Environment


Each of us responds to environmental influences differently, so its important to be self-aware about what factors in the environment influence us in a positive or negative way, and to take steps to ensure that the surroundings either support what were attempting to do, or that we have the coping skills to deal with less-than-optimal conditions.

How can we deal with an environment that is less ideal for us? Remain a victim to the environment.

A non-effective response. Leave the environment. This could mean packing it in and

going home. Depending on the circumstances, that might be a good choice.

Accept it. Say, so what, and continue to compete. This is not so much a resignation as it is a statement in which you declare It just doesnt matter; not worth my concern. After that, accepting it is no longer fighting it.

Change the environment. If able, we can move to a different location, or make a change (maybe put on rain gear) so that we are not as concerned about the rain.

Change your perspective of the environment. This is the most powerful choice. Instead of letting the conditions be the affect, choose the response youd like. We may PREFER a different environment, but we can choose how to respond and create a different outlook in less-than-optimal conditions.

Some things to consider, how do you school/practice environmental factors that you know may cause stress? Do you ride in the rain? Do you put your hunt coat on in 90+degree weather to become more accustomed? Think about the competitive advantage this can create.
