FROM YOUR PRESIDENT: CHERYL INGWERSENI would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the membership. 

I live in Tottenham, Ontario which is roughly an hour North of the City of Toronto. I have

owned Standard Poodles for about 20 years and have been involved with the Poodle Club of Canada in various positions.........Ontario Director, Versatility, Obedience and Field Chair.  As is pretty obvious from the positions that I have held, my main focus is performance

events.............I have competed with my Poodles in conformation, field, obedience, rally, flyball, agility and herding.........not all at once though!!!

I feel very strongly that the National Club of any breed is the 'keeper' of their breed.........so,

in that context, the Poodle Club of Canada is the keeper and the protector of Poodles.  We

all share responsibility for maintaining and improving the three varieties of this wonderful breed but the primary responsibility lands squarely on the shoulders of Poodle breeders.  They are the true guardians of the breed and good breeders are always striving to improve

their dogs and produce structurally correct and healthy Poodles for the rest of us to enjoy. 

I am happy and excited about taking on the role of President of our Club and my goals for the next 2 years are to not only have a National Club that protects and promotes all Poodles but a club that Poodle people are proud to be associated with.

DEBBY DACOSTA

Debby DaCosta lives in the quaint town of Vanessa, Ont. and by day is a Certified General Accountant. DaCosta and her husband Alan operate The Poodle Farm Canine Sport Facility and Equipment Supply www.thepoodlefarm.com offering a wide range of services including training instruction using positive motivational training techniques, Sanctioned Obedience, Freestyle and Rally Trials, as well as manufacturing dog sport equipment. Well known in: rally, freestyle, obedience, agility, field, conformation arenas. DaCosta’s name is synonymous with the Poodle breed and currently owns five accomplished and versatile dogs and has recently added a miniature poodle puppy to the pack.

DaCosta has over 20 years of experience with many different breeds diagnosing dog behaviour, training, structure and nutrition, teaching, competing and showing. DaCosta is always eager to volunteer her time and efforts to support clubs such as The Poodle Club of Canada, Gotta Dance! Canine Freestylers’ Association, World Canine Freestyle Organization (WCFO) and the Agility Association of Canada (AAC), Canadian Association of Rally Obedience just to name a few. DaCosta’s career in the obedience, agility, rally and freestyle rings have earned her and her dogs multiple High in Trial awards, High in Class, Freestyle High Artistic, Freestyle High Technical, Top Dog Awards, Versatility awards, and placements in agility in Regional and National events across Canada and the USA. She has titled her dogs to the OTCh level in CKC obedience, ATChC level in AAC Agility, CRMCH-Caro Rally Masters Champion in Rally Obedience, earning high scores, many of them perfect.

Her Apricot Toy Poodle, Chercan’s Wee Golden Brittany, OTCH, ATChC, RAMCL, NGC, OJC, OAC, Am. CDX, AGMX, Am. NAJ (Brittany 1993-2008) was a competitor into her 14th year and was the first dog DaCosta trialed and campaigned in obedience. Brittany had the AAC Bronze Award of Merit and was one of the only three toy poodles to get her ATChC in agility in Canada at that time. In 1997, 1998 and 2000, Brittany placed in the Top three toy poodles and Top seven toy dogs in Obedience. Brittany has the honour of being the first toy poodle to get her Versatility Award from The Poodle Club of Canada. She now holds this title alongside Tyme, who is also owned by DaCosta.

DaCosta has a broad range of accomplishments to her credit in various canine sports and disciplines and has just recently acquired her Judges Certificate for CARO Rally Obedience. DaCosta is a well-rounded trainer, teacher, competitor and judge.

DaCosta has been an active member with PCC for some time. It was an honour to be Second Vice President for two years and now an honour to be Vice President. DaCosta continues in hope of merging the performance side of the house with the conformation side of the house to create a team with common goals for the poodle breed. Having correct conformation, health and temperament enables DaCosta to enjoy a variety of dog sports with her family of poodles.

DaCosta urges you to take an active part in The Poodle Club of Canada. Input from all members is required to build a successful club. There are many tasks at hand and many improvements that need to be made. If you wish to contribute, please contact one of the executive and let them know what you have to offer. Everything takes time, with a team working together the list is much easier to accomplish. Making things happen requires more than words………it requires participation! Failing to plan is planning to fail!

FROM YOUR TREASURER, VIVIANNE SWARBRECK:

I was born into a family of dog lovers, and grew up alongside some very

good-tempered, long suffering shelties. As luck would have it, the man I chose to marry is allergic to dogs, so I set out to find a non-

shedding breed which I could train in obedience. Our first poodle came in to our lives twenty years ago in the form of a red miniature bitch. My

love for poodles has blossomed over the years and I have been very

fortunate to have shared my life with some exceptional toy, mini and

standard poodles. First and foremost, my poodles are my companions. I am very involved

in St.John's Ambulance Therapy Dogs, and Cheers and Troy, my silver standards, take turns accompanying me to a nursing home each week to

bring some joy to the residents there. I am passionate about training

and competing with my dogs, whether it be obedience, rally,

herding, field work or agility. I am delighted by the pleasure my

very versatile dogs and I have experienced while pursuing performance titles. I have a keen

interest about health issues and correct structure of

poodles and I am very concerned about the future of the breed as a

whole. I've been an active member of PCC for the past eight years, attending most meetings, helping out at trials

and shows, acting as Versatility Chair and assisting with the newsletter. It is an honour, as treasurer, to be a

member of the present executive and I look forward to implementing the positive changes we have planned.

Dear PCC members,

My name is Ora Marcus. I established my Ormar Standard Poodles line in 1992 with the acquisition of a beautiful black bitch named “Marney” . Marney lived to 16 years old, and has blessed us with sound and healthy Champion children and grandchildren. Marney will always have a very special place in our hearts, and is now resting in a beautiful urn adorning our fireplace mantle.

After 2-3 years of studying the breed, familiarizing myself with the genetic ailments of the Standard variety and attending numerous dog shows and several national Specialities, in 1995 I embarked on my breeding program, with my first litter born in July.

As a breeder, I felt it is important to affiliate myself with a National Breed Club, and joined the Poodle Advancement Association Of Canada, now Poodle Club of Canada in early 1995.

I learnt a tremendous amount about poodles, self educating, reading books, attending several seminars, speaking to many successful breeders and acquiring an eye for a dog through constant attendance at conformation shows, to include National Specialties.

To breed poodles is an honor and a privilege. We are the ambassadors of this breed, the ones who dictate which direction it will take in future. Let us try to lead this wonderful and versatile breed in the right direction, with health and temperament being our foremost priority.

In the last 2 years the PCC has gone through several trials and tribulations which threatened its existence and continuity in the dog world, however with the election of our wonderful new President, Mrs. Cheryl Ingwersen , and with the support of a united, strong and devoted executive , we are now beginning to make the right changes which will benefit the club , its membership and again cement the PCC as a respectable breed club.

The Poodle Club of Canada maintains two Health databases - do you know the difference between them?

The PCC Health Registry was first published in the 2000 Yearbook. Its purpose is to publicly verify that members of the PCC are health testing their dogs, especially those used for breeding. Occasionally, members have also registered failed tests. The last Registry was for 2003-2004, and the Registry is currently being updated. Copies of the three registries published can be found in .pdf files on the PCC website<www.poodleclubcanada.com>.

The Health Registry is:-open to current members' dogs only-public, published in our Yearbook and on our website-proofread by a member veterinarian to verify submitted copies-copies submitted are kept on file by the Health Officer-covers all breed-specific DNA tests, permanent tests and recurring tests-is now accepted by the Poodle Pedigree database for verification of testing

The PCC-sponsored Health Survey went online in the fall of 2008. It is open to all purebred Poodles worldwide. Its main purpose is to collect and provide statistical reporting on the overall health and prevalence of specific diseases of the breed. In order to obtain the greatest input, it is confidential, and no member of the Poodle Club of Canada has access to any records other than the records they enter of their own dogs. Currently, its questions are asked in both English and French, but further translations into other languages are expected. The Survey collects information "from litter box to the Rainbow Bridge", and covers nutrition, housing, reproduction as well as an extensive listing of diseases. It is as important to collect the data on healthy dogs as to collect information on health problems, and the survey is aimed particularly at the pet owner as well as the breeder. Individual dog's records can be printed off and kept as a record of shots, nutrition etc., and can be updated for the lifetime of the dog. One other purpose designed into the Survey is the ability to connect researchers with dogs and their owners who have volunteered to assist in disease studies.

The Health Survey is:-open to any purebred Poodle worldwide-confidential-online, entered by owner or breeder-provides statistical reports to National Poodle clubs (or their equivalent)-maintained by a geneticist-ongoing, collecting information for the life of the dog-collects information pertaining to both health and disease-of value to researchers for locating dogs for their studies

Both of these databases need support to be valuable. The Health Survey also needs support in order to give our breed clubs the information they need to supervise the health of the breed - checking to see if efforts to control disease are actually working and identifying disease conditions on the rise. Osmanthus SortilegeBreeder: Osmanthus Kennel, Owners: Angie Rea "Noel Poodles", Bruno Nodalli "Osmanthus" After receiving her Canadian Championship at 8 mos of age in March/2009 and winning her Class at PCA on April/2009, we are happy to announce that our Black Miniature Bitch (an Italian Import), "SHEBA" , bred by notable Poodle breeder Judge Bruno Nodalli, made her first debut in Europe on Jan/2010 in Milan - the biggest and most important International show in Italy , winning Group 1ST and BIS 3RD beating out 1800 dogs!! Judges were Mr Barenne (F) for the breed, Mr Paul Stanton (S) for the group and Mr Christofer Habig FCI Vice President from Germany for the BIS. Her second show in Italy, brought her another Group 1ST Win under judge Manola Peggesi from Italy. . Being BOB in another International show qualified her for Crufts 2011!!!

Sheba continues to wow the European Judges at large important shows with many Group wins, BB and BOS and Best Poodle beating out Standards, Dwarfs and Toys!

Her latest win was in Dortmund, Germany in May/2010 winning the prestigious Title: VDH Europasieger Champion 2010 for being the Best Female Poodle beating out 24 miniatures and also winning BOB.

Sheba is now an Italian Champion and as of Dec 31/2010 became the #1 Miniature Poodle in Italy for 2010. She is #2 Poodle over all sizes as well for Italy and missed being the Top Poodle by one point. Because of her incredible temperament and personality Sheba has adjusted well to her Italian roots and we look forward to her return to Canada in 2011 where she will be shown and bred and hopefully continue the legacy of her incredible ancestors!!
