I am happy to report that the May Show was a success despite a few problems for the Saturday show that did eventually get ironed out and Sunday went off without a hitch! I sincerely would like to THANK EVERYONE who helped make this show a success! It not only includes the volunteers that helped make the show run smoothly but also to all of the exhibitors that brought horses and showed. There are a lot of new members in our Region and it is great to see them out and participating. The volunteers and exhibitors are what can make the show a success or not. At the Show hats off to Nola for putting together a Youth Program that is proving to be success-ful! Monitoring the Youth Classes with volunteers taking notes and then meeting with the kids that night to review everyone’s ride and give pointers on how they could improve for the next days ride worked well. Afterwards, there were fun games and horse soccer. I am not sure who enjoyed that more, the kids or the adults watching and cheering! Nola would like to continue this format for the youth at the Lexington Show and she needs some volunteers to be monitors for the various classes. There is more information regarding this in the section about the Lexington Show. If you are coming to the Show think about volunteer-ing for Nola and the kids. The Lexington Show is our next big event coming up in June. This is always a fun time with fellow members from the daily trail rides to the party Saturday night and not so silent auction. In this issue is the information for sponsoring classes and advertising in the Show Program. Even if you are unable to attend you can show your support by sponsoring a class or advertising in the program. As always volunteers are needed for the many tasks that are required to run a show from ribbon organizers and presenters, trail ride and guides, silent auction table, youth activities, gate help, decoration and board maintenance during the show, and many, many more items. Contact BJ Schuler to find out where you can volunteer. A few more stallions have been added to the Futurity program so check it out and see if you have any eligible offspring that could possibly win you money! There are some other fun events coming up this month and in June with R & S Paso Finos and Emerald Valley Farm, plus on June 21st there will be a Gaited Pace Ride hosted by TROT at Woodstock Equestrian Park in Maryland. More information pertaining to these upcoming events are included in this issue. I hope everyone enjoys the Memorial Day Holiday coming up and I hope to see everyone at one of the up coming events!!!!!!!!!! Lisa

ACTION FOR OUR MEMBEACTION FOR OUR MEMBERSRS

Please Donate Items for the “Not So Silent” Auction

As part of the 2008 Mason Dixon Spectacular Show in Lexington, VA, we will once again have a “Not So Si-lent Auction” to benefit the Mason Dixon futurity. Once again our lovely national Paso Fino Horse Associa-tion President Robin Adams will serve as our auctioneer. Now we need your help to make it a success. We need your donations to auction off. Do you have a stallion you would be willing to donate a breeding to? Can you donate a gift certificate to a national chain restaurant or a handmade craft or gift basket? Any and all dona-tions will be gratefully accepted. Think outside the box – the items do not necessarily have to be horse related. Some of the items already donated include a training video, spa basket, piece of paso tack, and gas card. This year we would like to put together an auction list featuring the items to be auction. If you have an item to do-nate, please contact Ann Bastian so your item can be included in the auction list. Ann can be contacted at [email protected] or home at 610-670-1148. Thanks for your support. See you at Lexington.

REGIONAL NEWS REGIONAL NEWS ––CARLOCARLOS TOBON CLINIC WAS AS TOBON CLINIC WAS A GREAT SUCCESSGREAT SUCCESS

The Carlos Tobon Clinic in Frederick DE in April was well attended. The clinic was held in a very nice indoor arena, plenty of parking. Sandy Thomas and Maribelle MacAlpin, catch up on the news. Nola Haupert-Keill has that special glow. Jonathan Shaw had his beautiful paintings on display. Jonathan uses his pasos in his other past time, falconry.

Refreshments were served for breakfast and lunch. We all went to a great restaurant for supper and continued to bom-bard Carlos with Paso Fino questions. He graciously an-swered all of them.

Jose Biddle has cornered Bill Kennedy in the tack stall. There was a great selection of bits, bridles, and saddles. Through out the clinic, Carlos was calling on Jose to provide different head gear for the clinic horses. Louis Barrios and John Wilber seemed to have tuned Jose out.

Karen Kraushaar and Carlos put her little filly through her paces. Karen’s dressage training helps her get the most out of her horses.

Anne Habberton enjoyed the clinic. She owns three genera-tions of this filly’s bloodlines. Carlos rode almost every horse and made it look so easy.

17 year old Rorie Peirson and her horse Gallo de Reina Sin Par ( Gallo ) listened intently to Carlos. Rorie is very dedicated to her 9 year old gelding and is an excellent young horsewoman. Sandy and Carlos both display perfect posture. Sandy filly did great. This clinic was just a dry run for Sandy’s big win at Dillsburg. Sandy rode this filly to first place in Amateur Owner Pleasure mares.

Middlefield Farm had a phenomenal show. The blue ribbons and championship ribbons filled two stall walls. Well done, Lisa and team. Not only did Lisa do well in the ring, she put together a great show, complete with an outstanding barn party on Saturday. Ginamaria Barrios takes the Fino Championship on her mare. Debbie Wolkowicz wins the blue ribbon. Debbie will be representing America in the upcoming 2008 Youth Mundial in Medellin, Columbia. Good luck, Debbie.

REGIONAL NEWS REGIONAL NEWS ––MDPFHMDPFHA SPRING SHOW AT DILLSBURGA SPRING SHOW AT DILLSBURG

Country Pleasure always has many competitors. This year there was a discussion on the use of the mount-ing block. We, Country Pleasure participants, would like to find another way to show the well mannered aspect of our horses rather than testing our ability to dismount and mount on the off side. Maybe we could add opening a gate or walking across a tarp. That way we would be judging our horses not the riders’ agility or lack there of.

We shared the Dillsburg show with our Icelandic horse friends. You should have seen these horses boggy. I thought the fast tolt was something. When they went into the flying pace, we were all amazed that a horse so small could move so fast. They flew around the arena. We have our wine glass test. They have their full beer mug class. The gentleman on the white horse was the winner. He spilled nary a drop. For his win, he was allowed to drink the remaining of his beer.

The New Jersey Governor has proposed ELIMINATION of our NJ Department of Agriculture. So Susan Data-Samtak and John Samtak joined the Rally to Save the NJDA in the state capitol, Trenton, on April 1, 2008. (So appropriate for April Fools Day! ) There were 12 horses and over 100 tractors, along with landscape trailers, Organic Food delivery trucks, etc. parading down the streets to the Statehouse. Speeches were given and the crowd cheered! Nearly 1,000 people came out on this less than ideal day to SUPPORT AGRICULTURE Photo by Michele Morville.

REGIONAL NEWS REGIONAL NEWS –– SIDE SADDLE ANYONE? SIDE SADDLE ANYONE?

Oscar and I rode SIDESADDLE for two historical events in NJ on May 3 and 4. Oscar is a rescue and has put on enough weight that I changed his sidesaddle to a wider tree style called a Legend. Instead of a heavy Western Sidesaddle, the Legend is a stripped down version that was the basis for all the western "bar tree" Sidesaddles since approximately 1868. My friend, and sidesaddle "expert", Shelly, says the Legend fits Oscar better than the narrower Western saddle I used previously. Unfortunately, we did not have our own photographer for the Spirit of the Jerseys on Saturday, but my husband, John Samtak, took photos of us at Fosterfields Living History Farm near Morristown NJ on Sunday. The Farm's history traces from the Revolutionary War through 2008. They "hey day" of the Farm was 1860-1926, when it was owned by the Foster Family. Our riding habits span the time period from my reproduction Civil War Period Habit to Carla's 1906, Shelly's 1924, and Tracy's 1940s Original Antique Habits. In front of The WIllows, Susan with Oscar, Carla, Tracy and Shelly. We were asked to come out for a Photo Shoot in conjunction with Acorn Hall's Victorian Pastimes Exhibit, which included sidesaddle. The other folks are in Period Attire to illustrate croquet and other Victorian Games. Photo by John Samtak

Mason Dixon Youth Program Planned for Mason Dixon Spectacular Show in Lexington Virginia.

The Mason Dixon Paso Fino Youth Chair Nola Haupert-Keill has a program planned for our Youth members for the Mason Dixon Spectacular Show in Lexington Virginia. With help from some volunteers, Nola plans to have each Youth Class monitored on Friday with a goal of giving our Youth members some pointers for future classes. Those monitoring the classes will take notes on individual Youth riders. These notes will be discussed at a group Youth meeting on Friday evening following the last class of the day. Preceding this discussion will be a brief talk given by Dr. Ann Bastian concerning parasite control in our equines. After the meeting we will have an hour of Fun & Games on Horseback! ( Youth members are asked to attend the meeting in order to participate in the game time.) ( There are 4 Show 1 Youth classes on Saturday. We will have these classes monitored, and any Youth participating in them is asked to contact Nola Haupert-Keill after Show 1 if they would like to see the notes taken about their classes.) The volunteers who monitor classes will be provided with a notebook, pen and a list of the entries in the classes that are assigned to them. We will all be busy with our own horses at the show, but please consider donating some time for our Youth. The program worked very well at the Mason Dixon May Day Show in Dillsburg PA. We look forward to working with our Youth members at Lexington. Any Youth member wishing to participate and any volunteer able to monitor a Youth class are asked to contact Nola prior to the show. March 11, 2008

Dear Paso Fino friends,

We are hoping to see you at the Mason Dixon Paso Fino Horse Association’s Annual Spectacular Horse Show. It will be held at the beautiful Virginia Horse Center in Lexington , Virginia on June 13, 14 and 15, 2008. The Spectacular Trail Ride will be June 14 through the magnificent rolling hills around the Horse Center . We are asking Paso Fino enthusiasts to come on out and show us what you have been working on all winter… A promising new yearling? A talented show ring entry? This is your official invitation to attend the Spectacular 2008. Consider supporting Mason-Dixon by advertising in our combined show program and membership directory. As you know, this once a year publication is widely circulated to all exhibitors, spectators and members in the Mason-Dixon re-gion. Sponsoring a Class is a nice way to show your support for our organization. New this year are non-pointed Opportunity Classes. For prospective horse buyers and spectators “on the fence” about showing, these classes offer an occasion to experience the thrill of the show ring on a Paso Fino. Nola Keill and Nick Burgos have been working on plans to offer the young members of our club a fun and educational ex-perience in Lexington this year. Bring your family for a “spectacular” weekend together! Please come out and enjoy a pleasurable long weekend with fellow Paso Fino enthusiasts. We hope to see you this year! Sincerely,

VtÜÉÄçÇ `tÜ|Ç~É 2008 Sponsorship and Advertising Chairman Carolyn A. Marinko

UPCOMING EVENT UPCOMING EVENT ––HAVAHAVANA ON THE HILLNA ON THE HILL

The following is from Diane Dutt Mason Dixon Paso Fino Horse Association has been asked to participate in an event, "Havana on the Hill", on the 22nd of June in Chestnut Hill (a suburb of Philadelphia). For those of us who show, it's the weekend between the Mason-Dixon Spectacu-lar in Lexington, VA and the Piedmont Classic in Asheville, NC. An excerpt of the request is pasted here: "This year, the community of Chestnut Hill is hosting an event on June 22, 2008 (Sunday) called \"Havana on the Hill\". The planners know that I am involved with horse and were inquiring if/how we could do a \'baile de los caballos\' presentation dur-ing the festival. I would love to see a few horses (perhaps 4-6) come and demonstrate some of the gates, give a little discussion about Spanish horses, do a gait demo on some boards. I am looking into an honorarium/reimbursement for expenses." Please let me know if you'd like to participate. I'll volunteer Cometa to demo. Anyone else?? If you want to know a bit more about Chestnut Hill, here's the link for the local news: http://www.chestnuthilllocal.com/ Diane Dutt 3225 Orwig Rd. Stewartstown, PA 17363 cell: 267-446-6862

R & S STABLES PRESENTS

TWO STALLIONS FOR BREEDING

INTRODUCING: MONTECRISTO DEL PASO

Montecristo del Paso is our newest stallion at R & S Paso Fino. He is by the legendary stallion Capuchino. Monte is a 5 year old performance stallion with very quick footfall and evenly spaced four beat gait. He is correct in his conformation and looks just like Capuchino. What makes this horse special is his intelligence. He is one of the easiest horses that I have ever worked with. When you combine his mental ability, tremendous brio, natural gait and great conformation it is the formula to produce great offspring. Get in on the ground floor and try Monte in your breeding program - we expect OUTSTANDING results. Stud fee $1000 for the first mare and $900 for every mare after. Booking fee $100. Contact Rick at [email protected] or (814)444-0622.

El Glatiador de Plebeyo is 17 years old. He stands 14.3 hands and is white (gray). He has been our main stallion at R & S and has produced everything from fino to outstanding pleasure horses. Glatiador is the son of the world famous Plebeyo. Glatiador has been a con-stant winner in the show ring in the Classic Fino class. He has been used for many demonstra-tions and equine fairs. His offspring have also been successful in the show ring. He produces good size, intelligence, outstanding gait and great looks! I feel he would be an asset to any-one’s breeding program. We have plenty of offspring that can be viewed at R & S Stables. Stud fee $800 for the first mare and $700 for every mare after. Booking fee $100. Contact Rick at [email protected] or (814)444-0622.

R & S Stables is a full time training and breeding facility. Rick Shaffer is the trainer and will assist you with all your horse needs. For more information about these two great stallions, your

training needs or assistance with your equine questions, call Rick at (814)444-0622.
