Page 2: The Power of 14: 2014 Annual Report, Plymouth Housing Group

the power of 14In 2014, Plymouth operated 14 buildings offering safe, permanent homes and supportive services to our most vulnerable neighbors. It cost us, on average, only $14,000 per resident. This is far less than the $100,000 or more it can cost our community each year to care for someone who’s homeless. That’s the power of 14.

Before moving to Plymouth, our residents had been homeless for many years. Each copes with a complex set of challenges such as mental illness, serious medical conditions, aging, and disability. Many live with the lasting trauma of childhood abuse, domestic violence, and chronic poverty.

When we learn what they’d been up against, we’re often surprised that they survived. But we’re never surprised that they once struggled to find and keep a home.

How do we know if we’re making progress? On one night in January each year, a count is made of the number of people surviving outside in King County. That number was 21 percent higher in January 2015 than in January 2014. However, the number of unsheltered people experiencing chronic, long-term homelessness—the very people Plymouth serves—declined by 31 percent over that period.

These numbers validate the Plymouth outcomes presented in this report. But they also tell us there’s more to do. As you’ll read, we’re moving forward on two new buildings. One will offer more independent living to 63 successful Plymouth “graduates,” and another will provide a permanent home with intensive, compassionate care to over 80 men and women currently trying to survive on the street, many of whom are medically fragile. Both buildings will reflect Plymouth’s commitment to great urban design.

Stability in housing. It’s a simple idea. But to help our tenants achieve it, Plymouth staff go above and beyond every single day. They nurture the large and small personal victories that transform individual lives and deliver the significant community outcomes presented in these pages.

We realize we don’t do any of this alone. Thank you for supporting Plymouth’s work by donating, advocating, and volunteering; you made the power of 14 a reality. These wonderful results are yours, too.

Best regards,

Paul Lambros Stewart Landefeld Executive Director Board Chair

byron is a Seattle native. At

Plymouth, he’s known as a gentleman. A tenant

of grace and dignity.

But his childhood was defined by trauma, filled

with the abuse and neglect of a mother who only

noticed he was alive when she needed a verbal,

physical, and emotional punching bag.

Byron struggled to deal with his ‘cavernous’

loneliness and depression. Crime, homelessness,

and prison followed.

When released, Byron lived in his car to stay off

the streets and away from crime. He worked

during the day and conducted a street ministry

at night, reaching out to people surviving in

the same places he once did. But his untreated

mental illness derailed him.

Fortunately, Sound Mental Health offered him the

therapy and medication he needed. They also led

him to Plymouth Housing Group.

Byron says, “I’m a blessed man to be here. It’s

been life-changing to have a place to call my own

and space to reflect, to pray, to just be … without

fear of harm.”

Despite decades of damage, Byron cared for his

mother at the end of her life—bathing her and

feeding her when she could no longer do so for

herself. He never gave up on her.

After a lifetime of suffering, Byron says, “I’ve

finally come home.”

ashley radiates the energy and

steely-eyed focus of the student-athlete she was

in high school. She grew up in Washington state

with loving parents who are proud that she will

soon graduate from the University of Washington,

having earned a degree in linguistics and a William P.

and Ruth Gerberding Program Scholar award

along the way.

The last person you’d expect to be a Plymouth

tenant? In many ways, Ashley’s far from typical. But

when she recounts, frankly and unblinkingly, the

harrowing path that brought her here, she reminds

you that homelessness really can happen to anyone.

Ashley’s story involves the kind of downward

spiral that usually ends in tragedy. Years of living—

and nearly dying—on the streets left her with a

severely damaged leg, reliance on a walker, and

“excruciating” pain, all by her mid-twenties. “I had

reached a point where I didn’t have any answers,”

Ashley says. “I didn’t want my disability and my

poverty to stop me from using my brain. I had to

ask for help.”

After the hospital and Alcoholics Anonymous,

Ashley moved to Plymouth and joined our recovery

support program. This gave her the stability she

needed to take on her educational goals. Kimberly

Harrell, Plymouth building coordinator, describes

Ashley as “Driven. Unstoppable. A fighter. No,

a conqueror.”

Ashley explains it this way. “I found a home here.

Safety. People I could count on—who made sure I

didn’t have to do it alone. That was the key to my

success. And when I leave Plymouth, someone else

gets to move in and experience what I experienced

here. That means everything to me.”

THE POWER OF 14STABILITY AND COST SAVINGS:

PLYMOUTH’S 2014 OUTCOMESWhen a person experiencing homelessness has to rely on shelters, jails, and hospitals for housing, it can cost our community $100,000 or more, year after year. Living at a place like Plymouth is a compassionate, cost-effective alternative.

WHAT DOES $14,000 PAY FOR?

AMONG OUR FORMERLY HOMELESS TENANTS IN 2014:

• one in five had lived at Plymouth for at least five years.

• one in ten had lived here more than a decade.

• 44 thrived in Plymouth’s graduation program, a growth step from housing with round-the-clock support to more independent living. Our graduation path rewards tenants for their hard work and saves

our community even more money: the average annual cost per

graduation tenant is only $9,900.

THE POWER OF 1414 BUILDINGS IN 2014In 2014, we broke ground on Sylvia’s Place, Plymouth’s 14th building! When it opens in early 2016, all 63 tenant apartments will be available for residents in our “graduation” group, called HOP (Housing Options Program).

When they first left homelessness, these tenants lived in a Plymouth building with round-the-clock support. They’ve done very well, and they’re ready for more independent living. As HOP tenants graduate, their former apartments are freed up for someone just leaving the streets and in need of intensive services.

We’re looking forward to breaking ground on our 15th building, at 7th & Cherry, in the first quarter of 2016. The 80-plus apartments in this building (pictured at left) will also house people just leaving the streets. Many of these tenants will be medically fragile, and our onsite support services will be designed to meet their unique needs.

AN EVENTFUL YEARThe events of 2014 were all about building meaningful (and fun!) connections between community members and Plymouth’s mission. Both fundraising and friend-raising, these events forged bonds, raised support, and inspired both longtime and new civic champions.

11TH ANNUAL KEY TO HOPE LUNCHEON 2014

5TH ANNUAL SEATTLE DANCES! 2014

2ND ANNUAL POP SOME TOPS 2014

Renowned journalist and keynote speaker Charles Gibson explained the connection between mental health and homelessness, sharing startling data proving the cost effectiveness of permanent supportive housing. The September luncheon was attended by nearly 900 guests and raised $588,000 for Plymouth’s programs.

The March Seattle Dances! gala at Fremont Studios was another glittering success, entertaining nearly 500 guests and raising over half a million dollars. Blake and Molly Nordstrom were the evening’s honorees. Dance trophies went to: (L – R): Laura Bachman and Michael Darigol (Judges’ Choice); Carol Bailey Medwell and Michael Cahn (People’s Choice); Chris Schmaltz and Deron Hayes-Hirschy (Cyber Choice).

June’s PoP Some Tops party at Hilliard’s gave Seattle’s young professionals a chance to network and raise nearly $10,000 to support Plymouth’s mission, all while taking advantage of a warm summer evening with great live music, food, brew and raffles.
