Grinnell Bookies Meet in September Monday, September 16, at 1:00 p.m. the group will be re-
viewing “Heaven’s My Destination” by Thorton Wilder. George Brush, a traveling textbook salesman, is a fervent religious convert who is determined to lead a good life. With sad and sometimes hilarious consequences, his travels take him through smoking cars, bawdy houses, banks, and campgrounds from Texas to Illinois -- and into the soul of America itself.

Musings From The Co-ordinator
Paula Schutt
Greetings! What a month it has been,
and we are entering my favorite time
of year! Nothing compares to the feel
of crisp fall air, resplendent with the
aroma of wood smoke and the sound of crunchy
leaves underfoot! Ah…..I love fall! We have so
many exciting things happening this month. I want
as many people as possible to discover the fun we
have here at Grinnell.
You must make plans to join us for our Open House
where we will be celebrating Grinnell’s 36th Anni-
versary. Live piano music by Yuri Rashkin, snacks,
cake, coffee, tours of the building and fun! It all be-
gins at 8am on Monday, September 9th. Come and
check out our relocated library and newly expanded
pool room!
We have a number of new activities and classes be-
ginning this month as well as many which are re-
turning from a summer break.
There is no reason to sit at home bored this fall when
you can be at Grinnell. If you do not find something
you enjoy, tell us what you would like to see. We
welcome new ideas and activities and look forward
to meeting new friends. There is life after 50 - and
it is all happening at Grinnell! See you soon!

Grinnell Receives Alliant Energy Grant In August, Grinnell was notified they had been
awarded $1,000.00 from the Alliant Energy Foun-
dation. The grant will be used to purchase a comput-
erized sign - in program that will streamline keeping
track of statistics and building usage. The equipment
has been purchased, and we should have it up and
running sometime this month. Thank you to Alliant
Energy for this generous grant. It is appreciated.
Special Thanks A big thank you goes out to Dave Sterna, a volunteer
with years of computer experience. Dave spent many
hours and essentially “rebuilt” all of our computers in
the computer lab and the front desk computer. He
cleaned them up so they are running like new. This is
a service worth hundreds of dollars and to us, it is in-
valuable. It means our computer classes can resume
this fall with speedy, efficient equipment. Thank

desk: Linda Smith, Betty Sterna and Judy
Stottmeister! We are very glad you joined us!
Good Bye and Thank You We are sorry to be losing front desk volunteer, Geri

New Classes and Programs
The Art of Beginning Quilling Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued to-gether to create decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. The paper is then glued at the tip and these shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves, and various ornamental pat-
terns. In the 18th century, quilling became popular in Europe where gentle ladies of quality ("ladies of lei-sure") practiced the art. Now you can learn this won-derful craft here at Grinnell. Join instructor Theresa Niles each Thursday, beginning September 5 at
1:00 p.m. in our multipurpose room. For six weeks, Theresa will teach you the basics of quilling and even those who have a difficult time with dexterity in thier fingers will find it is not as difficult as they thought.

A Word From
Executive Director
Robert W. Harlow As the summer comes to an
end RSVP is gearing up for our Intergeneration-
al Programs. Our volunteers will be “going back
to school” to assist and mentor students through
our America Reads, Intergenerational Heroes,
BABES and Folk Fair Programs. We are al-
ways looking for volunteers for these wonderful
programs. If you are interested, contact Linda
at 362-9593 or 756-4281.
We are also looking for volunteers to help with
our Lunch and Learn program at Beloit Memo-
rial High School. This program runs on Fridays
from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. and lunch is provided.
Contact the RSVP office for more information.
Thanks to a grant from the Stateline Communi-
ty Foundation for our Seniors Volunteering for
Seniors Program we have been able to reduce
our waiting list for this service. While we have
not been able to increase the mileage reimburse-
ment rate for the volunteers, it is fulfilling to
know that some of the people who really need
this service are able to receive it. Many thanks
to our volunteers who have remained committed
to helping fellow seniors remain independent
and in their own homes.
This is the third issue of our new newsletter for-
mat and the feedback has been great. We feel
the quality is much improved and that it is an
excellent way to keep seniors informed of the
services and activities available to them.
Thanks to a one time augmentation grant from
the Corporation for National and Community
Service, we have been able to contract with a
web master which helps us make continual and
timely changes to our website. You can check it
out at www.rsvp-rock.org and let us know what
you think.
Finally, we have added four new members to
our Board of Directors. Paula Schutt, Holly
Friel, June Divan and Rob Wilkinson have
joined the Board and I look forward to working
with them. In the months ahead we will have
features on these individuals in our newsletter.
SENIOR FAIRS
Senior Fairs are not only fun but informa-
tive as well. Many vendors, many prizes
as well as much valuable information
about services for senior citizens is offered
at all three of the following events:

Seniors Volunteering For Seniors Mary started volunteering for the program when it started in November of 2010. She has taken numerous peo-
ple from Rockford to Madison and many places in be-
tween. Mary is a retired teacher from the Beloit School
District. She volunteers through our program and the
DAV, driving people to doctor appointments, errands
and other necessities of life. Her clients consist of varied
age groups, including veterans and seniors. Mary always
goes above and beyond the call of duty. She has taken
individuals for chemotherapy treatments and follow up
appointments after heart surgery. She has taken a clients
wife to see him after his surgery and helped a person see
her son in Madison in his final days.
Through her DAV driving she helps many veterans get to
their doctors appointments at the VA hospital in Madi-
son. Mary says, “I get to meet some very interesting
people, and make many new friends.” Mary has been
taking Dane and Gina since 2011 to various appointments, mostly to doctors and for groceries. Mary, Dane and
Gina have become good friends and see each other at least twice a month. Dane has had other drivers also, in-
cluding Marvellene, Bruce, Norm, John and Marty. Dane and Gina said, “Without the program we don’t know
what we would do. We live outside of Roscoe and have no access to public transportation.”

about you? We are in need of a volunteer to deliver “The Power of 50 Plus” to various places in Beloit and Ja-

A Very Important Volunteer Assignment – Reporting Hours I know we have talked about the importance of reporting your volunteer hours to us, but it seems like some of our members just don’t see what difference it makes. Or they think that since they sign the hours report forms at the place they volunteer, the hours are automatically reported to us. Unfortunately this is not the case. Many volunteer sites do not report “RSVP” hours to us. Does this matter? The following might inform you just how much:
I was talking to a volunteer on the phone and our records showed that she volunteered at only one site and turned in 12 hours a month. She was really doing a combined 78 hours at two sites. This was nearly 1600 hours of val-uable volunteer time we did not have and therefore did not show on the reports we must send to our funders. You might wonder why she did not turn in these very important hours. It was because since she signed the hours report at the volunteer sites she automatically assumed that they would be reported to us. It is not difficult to report your monthly volunteer hours. It can be done in one of four ways. Call Vivian at 362-9593 or 756-4281. If it is after hours or the weekend just leave your name, where you volun-teer and how many hours. Email me at [email protected]. Mail them in. I will be happy to supply you with hours report forms. You can also drop them off at our office and visit with us for awhile.
More Volunteer Opportunities

ICE Your Cell Phone
No, don’t freeze your phone! Put it to use for your safety. “ICE” stands for “In
Case of Emergency.” Emergency personnel try to contact a family member or
friend when you are the victim of an accident, crime or disaster. They may look
for the word “ICE” entered as a listing in your cell phone contacts and call that
number. Here are the steps you should take:
1. Decide who should be your “in case of emergency” person. You can list more
than one person, (ICE-1, ICE-2, ICE-3). It’s good to list one person who does not
live in your area in case everyone in your area is affected by a disaster.
2. Tell the people that you are listing them as an emergency contact. In case they
are called, they should know your name, date of birth and address. If possible they
should know a bit about your health (relevant medical history or allergies).
3. Enter ICE as a name on your cell phone; put the persons phone number. This is not a perfect plan. Your
cell phone may be damaged or lost in an accident. So be sure you also carry an identification card with your
name, date of birth and address. List on the card the names and phone numbers of your “in case of emergency”
people. Reprinted from Rock County Senior Review

Help! We Need More Yarn Once again, our supply of yarn is running low! Our
knitters and crocheters are work-
ing to make a good supply of
hats, mittens, scarves and sweat-
ers for the coming winter.
Also, lap robes take an amazing
amount of yarn, but bring a lot of
happiness to residents of assisted living facilities.
Life is too short to wake up with regrets.
So love the people who treat you right.
Forget about the ones who don’t.
Believe everything happens for a reason.
If you get a second chance, grab it with both hands.
If it changes your life, let it.
Nobody said life would be easy.
They just promised it would be an experience not
to be missed.

Senior Pedestrian Safety At one time or another, we are all pedestrians. Whether we are going for a walk or merely walking
across the street or parking lot. In the United States alone 100,000 people are injured and 6,000 peo-
ple are killed while walking. Vehicles strike more seniors while in a marked crosswalk than any oth-
er area.
The reasons for pedestrian/car accidents are many. Walking during hours when the light is changing
from dawn to daylight and daylight to dusk. Failure of the pedestrian to look in all directions before
crossing a street, failure of pedestrian to treat driveways like intersections, dependence on stop lights,
signs and markings to take care of them.
Walking on the wrong side of the road when sidewalks are not available and not watching for drivers
backing out of parking spaces in parking lots are other causes of accidents. Winter is the most haz-
ardous time for pedestrians, not only due to road conditions, but due to the fact that people tend to
wear darker clothing. When you are waking the early morning or early evening, you should always
wear light colored clothing. (continued on page 15)

(Senior Safety continued from page 14)
Placing reflective strips on not only your shoes, but on the back of your jacket, increases the ability
of a driver to see you. Carry a flash light. The movement of a lighted flashlight in your hand while
you walk and swinging your arms will attract the attention of a driver.
When crossing a street, we are told to look left and right. This is good, but you must also look
forward, toward the oncoming lane of traffic and over your left shoulder as well. With a good many
of our streets being four lane, there are vehicles that will be turning on a red light or an arrow.
Turning vehicles can be dangerous because drivers are concentrating on making their turns and
may not notice pedestrians. The driver has a difficult task because it is necessary to determine the
best time to turn based on the presence of other vehicles. The rear view mirror may block a pedes-
trian from the driver’s view while the car is turning. Left turning vehicles are involved in more ac-
cidents with pedestrians than are right tuning vehicles. The left running vehicle must cross at least
one lane of oncoming traffic before making the turn and may accelerate to beat the light.
When waiting to cross the street, a well meaning driver in the lane closest to the sidewalk will
stop and motion the pedestrian to cross in front of him. It is best not to take him up on this offer. A
vehicle could be coming to the intersection on the inside lane and not be visible to either the spotted
motorist or the pedestrian.
Always look to the left last. The vehicle which is most likely to strike you will come from that
direction. Look left - right - left.
