I AM THE VINE, YOU ARE THE BRANCHES” (John 15:5) SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2019 THE POWER OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST SEPTEMBER 14TH Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, This September 14th, let us recall the saving actions of the Lord's out -pouring of unfathomable love, not in a dry or formalistic way, but with deep joy, which pours forth from the heart. This is a joy which arises from holy faith in the living God. Even in the midst of sorrows and trials in this life - be they financial, social, marital, parental, psychological, or other, the joy in the ultimate triumph of Christ over sin, corruption and death is a well-spring of spiritual waters. May we drink deeply of them, and receive strength! Below is a significant quotation from the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos, Hierotheos. May it benefit all those who read it. "A person can approach the Passion and Cross of Christ in many ways, depending on each person's way of life…Just as all the events of Christ's life are historical, so is His passion. It is a historical event which took place during the rule of Pontius Pilate, as mentioned in the Holy Gospels. Since Christ was also perfect man, it means that He has a real human nature and lived at a particular time...At the same time, [the crucifixion] is also a mystery, because it refers to Christ's victory over death and the renewal of human nature. So it is...chiefly about the triumphal victory over the devil, death and sin....Personal participation in the Passion and Cross of Christ within the sacramental life of the Church constitutes the power of the mystery of the Cross and Resurrection of Christ." "In the wonderful and very theological Canon of Great Saturday there is a hymn in which the following is said: 'By death do You transform mortality, and by Your burial, [You transform] corruption. With divine power You make incorruptible the nature You have taken, rendering it immortal'. That is to say, through death Christ transformed what was mortal, and by His burial He transformed the corruptibility of human nature. Thus, He gave every man the possibility of transforming his own nature through union with Him". From: “The Feasts of the Lord"

THE POWER OF THE CROSS OF CHRIST

SEPTEMBER 14TH

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord,

This September 14th, let us recall the saving actions of the Lord's out-pouring of

unfathomable love, not in a dry or formalistic way, but with deep joy, which pours forth

from the heart. This is a joy which arises from holy faith in the living God. Even in the

midst of sorrows and trials in this life - be they financial, social, marital, parental,

psychological, or other, the joy in the ultimate triumph of Christ over sin, corruption and

death is a well-spring of spiritual waters. May we drink deeply of them, and receive

strength! Below is a significant quotation from the Metropolitan of Nafpaktos, Hierotheos.

May it benefit all those who read it.

"A person can approach the Passion and Cross of Christ in many ways, depending on each

person's way of life…Just as all the events of Christ's life are historical, so is His passion. It

is a historical event which took place during the rule of Pontius Pilate, as mentioned in the

Holy Gospels. Since Christ was also perfect man, it means that He has a real human nature

and lived at a particular time...At the same time, [the crucifixion] is also a mystery, because

it refers to Christ's victory over death and the renewal of human nature. So it is...chiefly

about the triumphal victory over the devil, death and sin....Personal participation in the

Passion and Cross of Christ within the sacramental life of the Church constitutes the power

of the mystery of the Cross and Resurrection of Christ."

"In the wonderful and very theological Canon of Great Saturday there is a hymn in which

the following is said: 'By death do You transform mortality, and by Your burial, [You

transform] corruption. With divine power You make incorruptible the nature You have

taken, rendering it immortal'. That is to say, through death Christ transformed what was

mortal, and by His burial He transformed the corruptibility of human nature. Thus, He gave

every man the possibility of transforming his own nature through union with Him".

September / October 2019

Welcome back families! We hope you enjoyed your summer break and are

looking forward to a spiritually rewarding year. We will continue to build

upon our church school theme centered around Galatians 5:22-23 "But the fruit

of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

gentleness and self-control." A little bit of this will change the world around

you!

First Day of Church School is Sunday, September 8. Students will remain

in church after Holy Communion for a blessing and then proceed to class.

Families must complete a registration form for each student and return to their

teacher or email us a copy at [email protected].

Church School is for children Preschool through High School. Classes begin

after Holy Communion and end at 12:00 pm. Come learn, grow and worship

with us!

With Love, in Christ,

St. John's Sunday Church School

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GAS

DALE STREET PROJECT

Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas)

is installing a new pipeline along Dale Street

from La Palma to Katella Blvd.

SoCalGas leased our adjacent property as a

temporary work location for office space and

equipment. SoCalGas moved on to the

property in August and will begin their project

along Dale Street in the near future. Work

will begin at La Palma and move toward

Katella Blvd. The work is expected to take 6

months. The majority of the work will take

place Monday thru Friday during normal

business hours.. However, there will be

periodic evening and weekend work; traffic

will be impacted and lanes will be closed on

Dale Street. We will notify you when work

will be conducted in front of our property.

Their activities are not expected to impact our

Church activities and we will still have access

to the parking area.

If you have any questions, please contact

Pennie at the Church Office. Phone number

GIFT CARDS ARE NEEDED

In everything give thanks; for this is the will of

God in Christ Jesus for you.

1 Thessalonans 5:18

If you would like to give thanks to God for

the many blessings He has bestowed upon

you, please consider donating pre-paid gift

cards (grocery stores, Target, Walmart) to

help feed those in need.

We are in great need of these at this time.

Just purchase a gift card, write the value on

it and then drop them into the box on the

Philoptochos Table in the Fellowship Hall.

Give thanks to God by being an instrument

in His hand to bless others!
