The 46th Annual conference of the Indian GeotechnicalSociety, IGC-2009 was held in the premises ofR.V.R.&J.C. College of Engineering, Guntur during 18-20 February, 2010. The conference, scheduled to be heldin December, 2009, had to be postponed to February inview of the disturbed conditions prevailing in the state ofAndhra Pradesh. Organized by the Guntur chapter ofIGS and hosted by the College, the conference was asuccess despite the absence of some delegates onaccount of the postponement.

Shri C.P. Dinesh, General Manager, Hindustan PrefabLimited, New Delhi inaugurated the conference. In hisinaugural address Shri Dinesh stressed the importanceof proper interaction and understanding betweenresearchers and professional engineers. It is not enoughif field and laboratory investigations are carried out andrecommendations are made unless they are followed upwith constant observation and monitoring. Such measureshelp in ensuring economic design of foundations ofbuildings including low-cost houses being taken up on amassive scale under scheme like JNNURM.

Delivering the presidential address, Er. MahavirBidasaria, President of IGS, said that ever since theSociety started in the year 1948, it had been doingextensive work in areas like bridge substructure design,dam engineering, earthquake engineering, rock mechanicsetc. In addition to conducting seminars, conferences andwork-shops, the society also publishes journals everyquarter in which articles of immense value are published.He urged geotechnical researcher to work in areas whichhave relevance to the field problems.

Earlier, welcoming the delegates, Prof. Ajjarapu SriramaRao, Honorary Chairman of the Organizing Committeeexplained the main theme of the conference, "Geotechnicsfor Infrastructure Development". Sustainabledevelopment is possible only through infrastructuredevelopment, he observed. Prof. M. Rama Rao,Organizing Secretary, said in his report that 188 paperswere selected for publication in the proceedings. Besides,ten plenary lectures and fifteen theme lectures were alsopublished in a separate volume, he added. Shri JaiBhagwan, Hony. Secretary of IGS gave a brief account

of the activities of the Society. He complimented theorganizers for making adequate preparation for theconference against heavy odds.

Dr. K. Basavapunniah, President of R.V.R. & J.C. Engg.College released copies of the conference proceedingswhile Sri M. R. Gopala Krishna, Secretary &Correspondent released the CDs. A souvenir, which wasbrought out in this connection, was released by Dr. M.Gopala Krishna, Treasurer of the College. Prof. P.S.Sankara Rao, Principal and Prof. K.S. Sairam, Head ofCivil Engineering of the college also spoke.

Besides, six key note address and nine theme lectures,92 papers were presented by their authors. Usefuldiscussions followed the presentations. A separateprogramme was organized for the spouses of thedelegates.

The valedictory session was presided over by Prof. A.Sreerama Rao. Speaking in the session, several delegatescomplimented the organizers for their meticulousplanning and flawless organization. They had a specialword of appreciation for the student volunteers whobestowed personal attention on each delegate. In hisvaledictory address, Prof. T. Rama Murthy exhorted theyoung researches to conduct research using moderntechnology and adopting a systematic approach. Activeparticipation in the deliberations by delegates in suchconferences would enhance their value, he asserted. Er.Mahavir Bidasaria, President, IGS, desired thatattendance should be high in such conferences to makethe deliberations more productive and purposeful. Prof.M. Rama Rao, profusely thanked the delegates. Prof.B.V.S. Viswanadham, Organizing Secretary, IGC-2010,to be held in Mumbai in December, invited the delegatesto the conference and gave a power point presentationabout the facilities for IGC-2010 at IIT-Bombay.

Over 200 delegates attended the conference. A novelfeature during IGC-2009 was a pre-conference work-shop on ‘Geosynthetics and Ground Improvement’ whichwas organized on 17th February 2010, by Prof. K.Rajagopal, in which five lectures were delivered. Over50 delegates participated.

On this occasion Prof. PhalguniBhattacharya, Chairman of the Society,announced that the Geotechnical StudyCircle, Kolkata had been awarded theprestigious IGS – AIMIL Best LocalChapter Award -2009.On that day three eminent personalitiesfrom around the globe delivered thefollowing lectures:Dr. Barnali Ghosh, Honorary LecturerUCL, UK, delivered her presentation on“Role of Geo-hazard Identification inDesigning Major InfrastructureProjects”. She stressed upon theimportance of geo-hazardsidentification in soil exploration. Theaspects for analysis and designof foundation under seismic loadingwere also highlighted throughexamples.Er. P. S. Sengupta, Senior GeneralManager, ITD Cementation India Ltd.,delivered his presentation on “Designand Construction Aspects of MarinePiles”. The important aspects of designand construction details were presentedthrough specific projects. The methodsused for analysis and difficulties ofconstruction in marine environmentwas highlighted.

Er. Indrajit Chowdhury, PetrofacInternational Ltd., Sharjah, U.A.E.,delivered a talk on “A PracticalApproach for Estimation of LateralLoad on Piles under Earthquake”. Hepresented his paper based on analyticalapproach and highlighted the simplicityof estimating load carrying capacityof pile under seismic loading throughspread sheet without taking help ofcostly computer algorithms.

The lecture was extremely wellattended by experts from the industry,academics and various Governmentorganizations. About 80 delegates andinvitees participated and actively tookpart in the deliberations during eachof the above mentioned presentations.The resounding success of theinaugural lectures in theGEOTECHNICAL LECTURESERIES has acted as a huge moralebooster to the local chapter.

First International Symposium on Ground ImprovementTechnologies and Case Histories (ISGI-09)

The First International Symposiumon Ground ImprovementTechnologies and Case Histories(ISGI-09) was held during 9th -11thDec 2009 at Furama RiverFront,Singapore. The conferenceprogramme included presentationsof 8 invited talks, 2 special talks and12 technical sessions. The invitedpapers offered a useful snapshot ofthe current state-of-the-arttechnologies in the area of groundimprovement. Moreover, the casehistories from different countriesranging from Asia, America,Australia and Europe wereaddressed.The ISGI 09 edited compilationcontains a collection of all the invitedand selected papers covering variousthemes of ground improvementtechnologies and case histories. Thetechnical papers were grouped in tothe following key sub themes:

(a) Recent Development in GroundImprovement Technologies;

(b) Case Histories involving MajorInfrastructure Projects;

(c) Design and Analytical Methods inGround Improvement;

(d) Instrumentation and Monitoring inGround Improvement;

(e) Variability/Quality Control Issuesin Ground Improvement;

(f) Laboratory and Centrifuge ModelTesting on Ground ImprovementStudies;

(g) Case Studies on GroundImprovement

The conference had a participationof over 200 including geotechnicalpractitioners and students from allover the world. It was great pleasureto see Indian participants (acade-micians, practicing engineers andresearch students) from differentparts of the world in this conference.The conference offered a wonderfulvenue, especially for the students, tointeract and share their experiencewith the experts in the area of groundimprovement. ISGI 09 was the firstin the series and will be followed bythe second International Conferenceon Ground Improvement Technolo-gies: Transport InfrastructureDevelopment and Natural HazardsMitigation, Nov- 2012, University ofWollongong, NSW, Australia.
