My Life’s PurposeMy Life’s Purpose

I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ on May 18, 1973. The next day I

received His call to “give my life to full-time service.” From that, I have

come to realize that my life’s purpose is to bring order out of bring order out of

chaoschaos wherever the Lord chooses to send me.

Page 31: THE PRICE OF LEADERSHIP

My Life’s PurposeMy Life’s Purpose

A verse to help define this purpose is found in Genesis 1:2:

““Now the earth was formless and Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the empty, darkness was over the

surface of the deep, and the Spirit surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the of God was hovering over the

waters.”waters.”

A.A dinner dispute.

Page 34: THE PRICE OF LEADERSHIP

Luke 22:24-27Also a dispute arose among them as to

which of them was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

Matthew 12:18-21

"Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. In his name the nations will put their hope."

XIV. Learn to be a good listener.

My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires - James 1:19-20

Page 40: THE PRICE OF LEADERSHIP

Listening

“Listening, coupled with regular periods of reflection, are essential

to the growth of the servant leader. . . . The most successful servant-leaders are those who

have become skilled empathetic listeners” – Robert Greenleaf, The Power of Servant Leadership.

Page 41: THE PRICE OF LEADERSHIP

Listening

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply. . . . The essence of empathetic listening is not that you agree with someone; it’s that you fully, deeply understand that

person, emotionally as well as intellectually” – Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Page 42: THE PRICE OF LEADERSHIP

Listening “Nothing creates more self-respect among employees [members] than being included in the process of making decisions”--Judith M.

Bardwick, The Plateauing Trap.

“Ask people what they want to do. The workplace [church] offers so many

opportunities and when we pair them with the right people, the results are amazing” –

Cheryl Highwarden, Consultant, ODT Inc.
