Edition 14 ‘SUPER SPORTS’ Friday 26th June 2020

Our magazine this week is on the theme of SPORT.

You will probably not be surprised to hear that I do not consider myself to be ‘sporty’;

but you might be surprised to hear that was not always the case…

When I was at primary school, the only sport I ever really enjoyed playing was cricket.

I was good enough to practice with the school team. BUT - I was a girl and was told, on

several occasions, “Girls can’t play cricket”. When I went to middle-school this message

was repeated; cricket was for boys, girls could play rounders. I hated rounders!

At the end of middle school, a new PE teacher taught us basketball. I was tall and strong;

and I loved it! We played in mixed-teams of girls and boys; and it was soon our favourite

lesson. She also taught us badminton and we would play mixed doubles whenever we could.

Then I went to upper school - and guess what? “Girls can’t play basketball”; I had to learn

netball. I was not impressed! As for badminton - well, the school had tennis courts…

It was really only in middle-school that any sporting skills I had were encouraged.

I was always the tallest in my class (until I stopped growing), so was taught ‘proper’ high-

jump and competed against the boys. I was also a sprint runner, and held the school record

for 100m… so what happened?

Well, that’s easy. I gave up. People told me I couldn’t do things, so I stopped.

Looking back, I wish I hadn’t listened to them; I wish I had persevered.

It’s a value I think we all need to remember…

What has been going on at SCHOOL?

This week, we are sharing what our Y6 children have been up to at school.

Year 6 have been writing

acrostic poems.

…and they have been planning and hosting their very own virtual SPORTS DAY!

and he looks fantastic!

lock-down.

whole roundabout! You are welcome to come and visit the snake, but please do not stand on him or touch the pebbles.

Orange Class have begun their DT project to create a building in Blyth. The

children made a miniature model using a 3D paper net before starting their

bigger model.

As a big ice hockey fan and an even bigger

Nottingham Panthers fan, I was lucky enough to

win this special edition pride jersey back in

February. I love bright colours and I always

wear funky coloured, patterned socks.

Our new playground at the back of school is

great, but a little bit boring!

We are inviting our children to send in

suggestions for PLAYGROUND MARKINGS

that we can have painted on the tarmac to make

playtimes more fun and active.

You can draw your ideas, take a photo and email

it to school so that we can see what you would

like. Alternatively, you could get some ideas

from the internet and cut+paste examples you

like onto a Word Document to email in.

Breathe Easy Week 22nd - 28th June 2020

Breathe Easy Week is an initiative started by the British Lung Foundation to raise awareness and understanding of lung health.

What is the British Lung Foundation? The British Lung Foundation is a UK registered charity that concerns itself with the nation’s lungs. Its aim is to bring about a day when everyone can breathe clean air with lungs that are healthy. At the heart of this organisation is its research into lung conditions, with the aim to improve care as well as prevent, treat and cure lung diseases.

SCIENCE AT SCHOOL

Orange class have been carrying out science experiments using different

materials. They explored which items they could bend, twist, stretch and

scrunch. They recorded the results on a table.

DID YOU KNOW… The Olympic flame is lit at Olympia in Greece every two years (Summer & Winter Olympics) before it journeys to the next host nation where it is paraded around until the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron at the opening ceremony.

This is one of my favourite summer recipes – ENJOY! Mrs Richardson 😊

ASIAN CHICKEN SALAD

Ingredients 1 small roasted chicken ½ red cabbage, cored and finely sliced 3 carrots, coarsely grated or finely shredded 5 spring onions, finely sliced on the diagonal 2 red chillies, halved and thinly sliced (optional) small bunch coriander, roughly chopped, including stalks 2 heaped tbsp roasted salted peanuts, roughly crushed ! BE ALLERGY AWARE !

For the dressing 3½ tbsp hoisin sauce & 1½ tbsp toasted sesame oil

Method

1. Combine the dressing ingredients in a small bowl and set aside. 2. Remove all the meat from the chicken, shred into large chunks and pop in a large

bowl. 3. Add the cabbage, carrots, spring onions, chillies and half the coriander. 4. Toss together with the dressing and pile onto a serving plate, then scatter over the

remaining coriander and peanuts.

Children’s Art Week 29 June – 19 July 2020

Children's Art Week is organised by Engage - the National Association for Gallery

Education. During this time, schools, art galleries, museums and community groups

are encouraged to plan and provide art activities and events for children and

families to take part in practical activities with artists and art educators.

Each week has a different theme:

Week 1 - The Natural World

Week 2 - Connecting across generations

Week 3 - Literacy & creative writing

This year there is a focus on art activities

that can be accessed online. This could be a

live-streamed session with an artist, digital

challenges, virtual tours of galleries and more.

Participants are encouraged to share any of

their creations online and with others.

The activities that take place are also often linked to the Art Curriculum.

All events and activities are free or low cost to participate in.

On Wednesday, Year 6 participated in the NATIONAL WRITING DAY, an annual celebration of writing designed to inspire people to get writing. Their message is simple – everyone has a story to tell and sharing it can be a source of pleasure and power.

This year the organisers set the #247challenge, asking people to write a story, starting with ‘One day’ but using only 24 words! Here are some of the brilliant Y6 stories:

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING?

And finally…

PERSEVERANCE is something we teach as soon as children start at St Mary & St

Martin. You will often hear staff telling children “Go on, have a go!” in lessons across

school. Whatever the subject or activity, we want our children to be willing to TRY - and

to keep trying - even when they find things difficult.

This is why we teach them positive learning behaviours, and why we talk to them about

being RESILIENT. This is a life-skill that we all need… because life can be tough.

Over the past 14 weeks, we have seen how resilient our pupils have become;

they have been simply amazing during lock-down and the pandemic.

We are SO proud of you all!

We know that things are still difficult; we know that life is still not ‘normal’; and we know

that some of you might be finding it an uphill challenge…

…but we also know that as a school community WE CAN DO THIS, that a ‘new

normal’ is on the horizon, and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
