Dear Prospective Partner,

We sincerely hope this letter finds you in good health. On behalf of the Princeton Association of

Black Women, we would like to cordially invite your company to become a corporate partner of our

group for the 2007-2008 academic year.

Since 2002, the Princeton Association of Black Women has been a dynamic force in the lives of

black women on campus. Uniting black women from the undergraduate to the graduate colleges

and maintaining contacts with faculty and alumni, our organization addresses the challenges that

face black women as minorities in both race and gender in the Princeton community. We are a

group that promotes academic excellence among our members, community responsibility, and

continuing awareness of social conflicts in the greater Princeton area. Our members form

committees that address social problems and organize events to open the eyes of all Princeton

students to what is going on around them. Leadership and creativity are skills that our members

learn through managing their subcommittees on issues of interest, such as crime and punishment

in the United States, promoting better self-image among young girls at local middle schools, and

spreading awareness about sex abuse of young girls in Africa.

The best quality about PABW’s commitment to social issues is the range of problems that we address;

we are not just about improving things for ourselves, but also for the community at large. Although our

constituency is mainly black women, we are open to members of all races and persuasions as long as

they have the same commitment to social justice and change.

In addition to our regular community service activities, PABW’s work has culminated in some fascinating

events for both the black community, the greater community of Princeton, and the United States. In the

past, we have hosted events like the Annual Black Men’s Appreciation Dinner, which acknowledges

black men for their struggles and their hard work at Princeton. We also have major events in planning for

this year that address structural problems in the United States. We are collaborating with other student

groups to host a colloquium on the U.S. Prison system, for which distinguished Professor of Religion

Cornel West has agreed to host a conversation with other leading academics in the field. As for our

commitment to world issues, we are actively promoting a new program to address sex abuse of young

girls in Africa. Our freshman representative has developed a committee to spread awareness of the issue

in the student body and hold paideia discussions with students and faculty.

PABW Members have promising futures and among our constituency are some of the most eloquent

poets and writers, the most dedicated public policy activists from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public

and International Affairs, NAACP coordinators, artists, engineers, and business majors.

Each and every one of us consistently performs with excellence in our academic studies as we

balance our class work with our serious commitment to world improvement.

PABW alumni enter the career world with the skills that they learn as part of our organization and as

leaders in their extracurricular activities. PABW endows its members with the confidence and support

needed to succeed at Princeton and in the future. PABW alumni careers in business, medicine, law,

and public policy have all been enriched by their experience with us.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank you in advance for kindly considering a partnership with

our organization in the fall of 2007.

Sincerely,

Whitney Ajibade Davionshante Chism

THE PABW MISSION

The Princeton Association of Black Women, hereafter referred to as PABW, is an

organization designed to celebrate and unite women of color on Princeton's

campus, offering a support system and forum for discussion on issues of interest.

During the course of each school year, PABW members will focus on volunteering

with at least one outside organization (either Campus wide or local) with the goal

of improving a sector of the local community.

~~ABOUT USABOUT US~~

Page 7: THE PRINCETON ASSOCIATION OF BLACK WOMEN: RAISING ...pabw/Corporate.pdf · We sincerely hope this letter finds you in good health. On behalf of the Princeton Association of Black

OUR REASONS FOR SEEKING CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP

In the past, PABW has been a relatively small-scale organization whose activities were

primarily of importance to black women on campus. In the last few years, PABW has

been expanding its activities and becoming an organization that holds large, campus-

wide events. PABW’s large constituency is dedicated to seeing change made on

campus and in the world. The Board members are visionary forward-thinkers who

have recognized that there is a perfect opportunity for corporate partnership and

mutual benefit.

We are seeking a sponsor to develop a relationship with a premiere organization that

can benefit from access to intelligent, diverse, and elite members of PABW. In

exchange, we will benefit from unique, challenging and rewarding career and volunteer

opportunities with the sponsor. We hope to initiate an academic and professional

partnership that can develop and grow throughout the year.

~~OUR VISIONOUR VISION~~

HOW WE ENVISION OUR FUTURE (I)

PABW is currently a hard-working and dedicated group of students that holds events for

its constituency. However, we recognize that all student groups benefit from progress and

expansion. The Board of the Princeton Association of Black Women has accordingly

developed a vision for what PABW should look like in the coming generations.

If we looked into our future, what would we see? We hope the PABW of the future will

incorporate more members of other races and ethnic backgrounds, who will join us as they

recognize that our mission is to improve life for all people, regardless of race or skin color.

We see our board expanding in size to diversify the allocation of responsibilities.

Our future projects will include holding at least one large symposium or colloquium

event per academic year. These events will meditate on the future with the goal of

bringing together academic, political, and student voices who will envision the world as it

should be and help make progress toward that goal. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, we see

ourselves developing a close relationship with a corporate sponsor.

Page 9: THE PRINCETON ASSOCIATION OF BLACK WOMEN: RAISING ...pabw/Corporate.pdf · We sincerely hope this letter finds you in good health. On behalf of the Princeton Association of Black

~OUR VISION OF CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP~~OUR VISION OF CORPORATE PARTNERSHIP~

HOW WE ENVISION OUR FUTURE WITH YOU (II)

PABW takes corporate partnership very seriously. We are interested in building a long-term

relationship with our corporate sponsor to help our members find outstanding career options and summer

opportunities, and to give our partner organization the best access to the talented black women and men

at Princeton.

We are aware that taking a prominent role on campus is essential for a company who wants

to tap the talent that Princeton University students possess, and also that finding a student group to

connect with provides an important point of entry into the campus community. By becoming a PABW

corporate sponsor, your organization has the opportunity to create firm ties with both the undergraduate

and the graduate community. We will connect you to PABW’s large constituency, and we will also help to

spread campus awareness about company products and goals.

If your company is seeking an opportunity to link its brand to an outstanding student group

and recruit talented African-American women, let PABW turn that difficult recruiting process into a

breeze. We also have ties to other minority student groups on campus, and all of our activities for your

benefit will be advertised in the greater university community among all the talented individuals on

campus, black or white. Please review the information below and contact us with any questions you may

have. Thank you for your time, and we sincerely hope that you are interested in becoming a PABW

corporate sponsor!

CAREER BUILDING

PABW is interested in furthering the career interests of its constituents. With so much

vision, talent and perspective in academics, art, and music, PABW members could

bring so much more diversity to your organization than just diversity of skin color.

PABW will hold information sessions and distribute company materials about career,

volunteer and summer opportunities, providing members with an ongoing update about

your offerings.

PABW can make diversity recruiting easy for you. Information Sessions can be up

to 1.5 hours long and we encourage you to include a presentation about what it is like

to be a member of the company, how women can balance family and career

commitments, how to find a summer program to begin a good career path, and how to

apply for permanent jobs. Information sessions are mainly attended by PABW and

Black Men’s Awareness Group members, but we also will advertise them throughout

the entire Princeton community.

Page 11: THE PRINCETON ASSOCIATION OF BLACK WOMEN: RAISING ...pabw/Corporate.pdf · We sincerely hope this letter finds you in good health. On behalf of the Princeton Association of Black

COMMUNITY BUILDING

Can We Talk SeriesPABW maintains a conversation series between students and black women leaders in

our community. Typical discussion topics are interesting current events or sociopolitical

issues. Past professors who have moderated these discussions include Professor

Noliwe Rooks of the African American Studies Department and Professor Alison

Williams of the Chemistry Department.

Weekly Discussion TopicsAfter discussing business matters at the PABW biweekly meetings, we engage in

Socratic questioning about the experiences of black women. Past topics include body

image, eating disorders, and media representations of black women. We always

promote dialogue, and often these discussion topics are continued on our student blog

or even turned into larger initiatives for social change.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Fisher Middle SchoolPABW will collaborate this year with the Fisher Middle School in New Jersey. Our

aim is to reach out to young black children who risk losing their dreams, their self-

respect, and their self-love to hopelessness. To encourage these children to renew

their commitment to their goals, we will become their mentors, discuss self-image

with them, and talk to them about fulfilling their dreams and attending college.

Breast Cancer and AIDS AwarenessTwo of the gravest health issues that threaten black women are breast cancer and

AIDS. Unfortunately, AIDS spreads and cancer develops unnoticed because

discussion is taboo or the symptoms are ignored. We promote awareness of these

issues through events at the University and discussion at our biweekly meetings.

~OUR ~OUR NEWEST PROJECTSNEWEST PROJECTS~~

U.S. AND WORLD IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVES (I)

Two of our newest and most visionary projects are the Annual Social Justice Colloquium

Colloquium and the initiative to stop sex abuse of young girls in Africa. Our commitment to

societal change is unwavering. We do not merely observe the problems as they are, but

rather meditate on realistic solutions.

The 2007 Princeton University Colloquium on U.S. Imprisonment•Brings together professors, government officials, and key political voices from all over the country on the

issue of the marginalization of prison inmates in our society

•Professor Cornel West has agreed to be our keynote discussion panelist

•Invitees include conservative voice Thomas Sowell, Senator Bill Frist, Professor John McNamara of

the Hoover Institution, Acting Commissioner of the New Jersey State Prison System George W. Hayman,

New Jersey Governor John Corzine, and various other prominent intellectuals who have done work on

prison ethics.

•The event is open to the entire Princeton Community and will be advertised on campus and city-wide

U.S. AND WORLD IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVES (II)

PABW Members are always encouraged to design their own projects for social change.

Our freshman representative proposed an endeavor to stop sex abuse in Africa and the

issue is now under the direction of a steering committee of PABW members.

PABW Initiative to Stop Sex Abuse in Africa

•We intend to increase awareness on our campus of this international issue by initiating

discussion and encouraging students to sign a petition of support.

•The goal is to coordinate with other student groups to collect funds to remit to UNICEF

in support of victims of sex abuse.

SOCIAL EVENTS (UNIVERSITY FUNDED)

To relieve the overwhelming academic pressure on our black women, we have organized a

series of monthly activities. These events always bring the women of color at Princeton

closer together as we relax and have fun.

Laser TagWe co-host this event with the Black Men’s Awareness Group of Princeton to build

community with the black men.

Trips to New YorkWe explore New York as a group and tour the neighborhoods discussing the history of the

city as it pertains to the black community.

Women’s retreatWe find a secluded place to discuss women’s issues and come together as a group over the

course of two days and one night.

BLACK COMMUNITY APPRECIATION

The Annual Black Men’s Appreciation DinnerThe black women at Princeton believe in admiring the success of our male classmates who

have struggled to discover their identities, who have wrestled daily with discrimination and

persevered despite being underappreciated as citizens of America. Our most important

event of the year is the Black Men’s Appreciation Dinner. We take special time to show the

black men at Princeton that their struggles have not gone forgotten, that their kindnesses

have not gone unnoticed, and that we are fully supportive of their success here at the

University and in the future. This event is always the most touching of the year as we speak

words of encouragement to our underclassmen and bid farewell to our beloved seniors.

Last year’s dinner was an overwhelming success. Over 70 men were able to attend, the

food was highly praised, and every man left knowing how much we value the black men at

Princeton. The quality of this project could only increase with the help of a corporate sponsor.

Last year’s seniors were a much beloved group of

students. Many are now beginning highly successful

careers in banking, and others are attending the top law

and medical schools in the U.S. Some graduates have

even stayed in the Princeton area and are maintaining

strong connections to the student groups they

participated in during their undergraduate years.
