Broome High School 381 Cherry Hill Road Spartanburg, SC 29307 Page | 1 Dear Broome Students & Families, I hope you all are excited about the beginning of the final grading period of the 2016-17 school year. We have accomplished many things this year and we still have many more opportunities ahead of us during the months of April and May. I want to remind students that attendance is critical to success in school. We have been emphasizing this by sending weekly letters to students on their 3 rd , 6 th and 10 th absence. If you receive a letter and feel there is a mistake please call the attendance office to correct the issue. We only have four Saturday attendance makeup days this semester. The dates are April 29, May 6, 13 & 20. Be sure to turn in your parent notes and medical notes on the day you return to school. Students with 6 or more unexcused absences in a semester class do not earn credit for the class unless the time is made up. Our spring sports teams are off to a great start. I appreciate all of the students, parents and staff that are attending games on a regular basis. Our attendance helps the teams perform at their best. I want to welcome our new head football coach back to the Broome family. Lynn Fleming is a 1991 Broome graduate. Welcome home Coach Fleming. Coach Fleming recently served as head coach at Chesnee High School. Please remember that our Spring Break is the week of April 3 rd – 7 th . April 19 th is a half day for students. The BHS Academic Reception is April 25 th and our Prom is April 21 st at Indigo Hall. Spearman Announces Fourth SC Teacher of the Year Finalist

State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman surprised Broome High School teacher, Pam Flynn, in her classroom with news that she has been selected as one of five finalists for the South Carolina Teacher of the Year award. Pam is an outstanding educator whose love for her students is evident the moment you step foot in her class," said Superintendent Spearman. "Her passion for teaching is contagious and I look forward to her continued leadership and service in the Spartanburg community." Flynn is a Social Studies teacher at Broome High School in Spartanburg School District Three. Pam serves her fellow teachers by mentoring, serving as a PACE instructor, and by leading students in CERRA’s Teacher Cadet Program. She takes her students on a history journey, by creating an animated and interactive learning environment in which they see the relevance in what they are learning. To teach World War I trench warfare, she rearranges the desks to create “trenches” which students must walk/crawl through. Flynn has received numerous awards, including the Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction Award and Horace Mann Crystal Apple Award. "We are extremely proud of Mrs. Flynn’s accomplishments as an instructional leader in our district. She is a very compassionate and energetic teacher that is relentless in motivating her students to be successful, said Spartanburg School District Three superintendent Kenny Blackwood. As one of five finalists, Flynn will receive $10,000 and go on to the next stage of competition which involves an in-person interview with a team of expert judges. The South Carolina Teacher of the Year Gala will be held May 3rd in Columbia. The overall winner receives a total of $25,000 and gets to drive a

brand new BMW for one year while advocating for the teaching profession across the state. The Teacher of the Year program celebrates excellence and strengthens the teaching force by honoring and recognizing exceptional teachers on a district, state, and national level. These awards not only assist in retention efforts but serve as a powerful recruitment tool. The South Carolina Teacher of the Year serves for one school year as a roving ambassador providing mentoring, attending speaking engagements, working with teacher cadets and teaching fellows, leading the State Teacher Forum, and serving as the state spokesperson for over 48,000 educators.

Health Keep Your Eyes Healthy Over Spring Break

Spring break is here! While many of you will be traveling or relaxing, spring break is not the time to relax from your contact lens wear and care habits.

Contact lens wearers can help prevent eye infections by taking proper care of their contact lenses whether at home or traveling.

Wearing and caring for contact lenses properly is critical to keeping the eyes healthy and preventing eye infections. The majority of contact lens wearers do not practice proper contact lens hygiene. Since 2006, in the US there have been three outbreaks of serious eye infections that sometimes blind. These outbreaks have brought attention to contact lens wearer hygiene and the need for consistent information about how to wear and care for contact lenses to help prevent such infection.

CDC–with feedback from experts in optometry, ophthalmology, opticianry, and infectious diseases-encourages contact lens wearers to follow these recommendations, which are based on data from a number of studies.

Your Habits

Wash your hands with soap and water. Dry them well with a clean cloth before touching your contact lenses.

Don’t sleep in your contact lenses even when up late unless prescribed by your eye doctor.

Keep water away from your contact lenses. Avoid showering in contact lenses, and remove them before using a hot tub or swimming.

Your Supplies

Rub and rinse your contact lenses with contact lens disinfecting solution to clean them each time you remove them. Never use water or saliva.

Never store your contact lenses in water.

Replace your contact lenses as often as recommended by your eye doctor.

Your Contact Lens Case

Rub and rinse your contact lens case with contact lens solution and then empty and dry with a clean tissue. Never use water. Store upside down with the caps off after each use.

Replace you contact lens case at least once every three months.

Your Contact Lens Solution

Don’t “top off” solution. Use only fresh contact lens disinfecting solution in your case – never mix fresh solution with old or used solution.

Use only the contact lens solution recommended by your eye doctor.
