The Process of Calling a New Pastor

What’s Next?

On May 14th, a Congregational Meeting was held to further our progress in the process of calling a new pastor.

The process steps are shown here; and this chart will be displayed in the Narthex every Sunday indicating our progress toward our final goal.

At the meeting on May 14th, two new elders were elected to fill vacancies on the Session: Mindy Lemen and Jason Bridges. Additionally, the members for the 2017 Nominating Committee were elected. Session appointed Nominating Committee members are Janet Jackson, Chairperson and Irene Cheatum. Congregational representatives elected by the congregation are: Suzanne Foster, Paige Oslowski and Chip Pallman.

The Nominating Committee will be responsible for compiling a list of nominees for the slate of PNC candidates. Ultimately, the PNC members will be elected by the congregation at a future congregational meeting (displayed in Box 7 (c ) on the chart. The Nominating Committee will begin work on that task in the next week. As soon as a list has been compiled, the Session will be asked to authorize a congregational meeting and the congregation will elect the PNC, concluding Steps 7 (d) and 8.

How will the PNC nominees be selected? Article continued on Page 2.

This chart is on display in the Narthex… keep an eye on it as it’s updated until we reach the top!

The Slate of Nominees” - The By-laws of the church state that the PNC will be

comprised of 9 members and 2 alternates. In effect, this means that 11 people will

be selected and all eleven will be expected to attend all meetings—even the

alternates.

How will we develop the slate? - The Nominating Committee will select a list of

nominees based on their combined knowledge of the congregation as well as giving

consideration to volunteers, while giving attention to a fair representation of the

male and female constituency, of all ages and of all ethnic minorities of the

congregation. This means YOUR NAME COULD END UP ON THE SLATE, whether or

not you volunteer. If you DO NOT WANT your name on the slate, you should contact one of the Nominating

Committee members to let them know that you have no interest in serving on the PNC.

The Nominating Committee will get together the week of May 15th to determine how to best compile a list of

qualified names for consideration and approval by the Session to be followed by an election by the Congregation.

If you want to volunteer your name for consideration to serve on the PNC, you MUST contact one of the session

members or one of the Nominating Committee members. You may contact them by phone or e-mail; however, if

you approach them in person, please make sure that you hand them a piece of paper with your request on it so

that the request is documented and doesn’t get forgotten. (Some of us are subject to “senior moments”.)

Please call your Nominating Committee Member after 5 PM; and be sure to leave a message if they

are not available.

Here is a list of the Nominating Team Members with their Contact Information:

REMEMBER! The most important thing we should be doing, is to prayerfully seek God’s will and God’s wisdom in this matter. God knows your needs and wants to guide you to the person He has already prepared for this responsibility. The Bible says, “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you…. so that their work will be a joy, not a burden” (Hebrews 13:7,17).

Confirmation Class 2017

On Sunday, April 23rd, 5 members were admitted to St. Giles through Confirmation. Each new member attended confirmation classes taught by Pastor Diane, and crafted their own Confirmation Creeds shown below.

Jennifer Beaty—I believe that God created Heaven and Earth. I believe our Lord Jesus Christ was God’s son who was born of the virgin Mary. I believe that Jesus was crucified and died for our sins. I believe that he rose from the dead three days later. I believe that Jesus then ascended into Heaven. I believe that the empty cross symbolizes that once Jesus rose from the dead, he had opened up the Kingdom of Heaven. I believe that Jesus wanted us to love all of our neighbors. I also believe that Jesus’ love is unconditional, that not only him, but God as well will love us no matter what. I believe that God put us in this world for a specific reason and that everyone is important no matter what their background might be. I believe that everyone has the opportunity to follow the ways of Christ. Lastly, I believe that one day we will all be able to reunite with God in Heaven.

Alisandra Bethea—I believe in our Father, His son Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I believe God made the whole world and that Jesus died for our sins. I believe that God made all of us and every animal.

Xavier Bethea—I believe in the Holy Ghost, Jesus Christ and God. I believe there will be no homeless or starving people in the world. I hope that we will live in a world of peace.

Haydon Bridges—I believe that all people are created equal. I believe that Jesus was born to die for our sins. I believe that I am more than I appear to be and that being a good friend and loving others is the most important thing. I believe that with God’s help I have control of my fate and destiny. I believe that my purpose is to grow and to be better than I was the week before.

Mila Tomaro—I believe in the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I believe there is only one true God. I believe God loves all people. I believe everyone should have the right of freedom. I believe everyone deserves to be happy. I believe everyone should have a dog.

On Saturday, April 1st, St. Giles held our Annual Easter Egg hunt. It has

gotten fancy enough to earn the title “Egg-stravaganza” as it included a

“midway” in the parking lot at one end of the campus and a fabulous

buffet of hamburgers, hotdogs, picnic style side items and mountains of

popcorn in the Fellowship Hall at the other end of the campus. Face

Painting was enjoyed by a number of youngsters as well.

Not to be outdone in the Creative Planning Department, the Education

Committee turned the parking lot into a romping fun free for all (literally)

with a Bounce House and a Rock Climbing Wall, that saw even some of

the “bigger kids” taking their turn to head to the top and ring the bell.

Inside the classrooms, various crafts were held and a story telling activity

took place in the sanctuary, starring Steve and Donna Mountain, telling

the story of how Jesus was buried, but how others only found an empty

tomb. Like an empty plastic Easter egg, the story illustrated that

although the tomb was empty, the world was filled with light, as Jesus

had risen. The children were all given eggs and a flickering light to go

inside the egg, much to their delight. Donna and Steve also had real

pictures of the tomb from a book they had purchased during their visit to

the Garden Tomb. The children were enthralled! (So was I…)

This was a fun event for all involved and showed how many of our

different committees worked hand in hand to put on a special event for

the community. Thank you to the Education Committee, the Fellowship

Committee, the Membership Committee and all church members who

contributed to the success of this awesome event!

2017 BIRTHDAY OFFERING

Presbyterian Women’s Birthday Offering – Saturday, May 6th at 11:00 AM

GOD PROVIDES Your gifts make a difference!

The Birthday Offering of Presbyterian Women celebrates Presbyterian women’s history of mission giving. It was launched in 1922; and since that time, it has become an annual tradition and has funded nearly 100 major mission projects that continue to make a difference in the lives of women and children. The offering is collected in the spring of each year to celebrate the blessings in the lives of Presbyterian Women. The Birthday Offering Luncheon is open to all Presbyterian Women. The luncheon was held in the Fellowship Hall on Saturday, May 6th at 11:00 AM. Michael Carey from the Veterans Hospital in Lake City was our guest speaker. If you didn’t join us this year, you can still donate (see info box below.)

The Family Justice Center in SOUTH CAROLINA currently operates an emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence in Georgetown and Horry Counties in South Carolina. With room for only 11 people, the shelter is frequently at capacity. The Presbyterian Women Birthday Offering grant will assist FJC in achieving its goal of constructing a new domestic violence shelter for victims of abuse living in these two counties of northeastern South Carolina.

First Hand Aid in CUBA exists to diminish the suffering of the most marginalized Cuban citizens by providing them hope, dignity, and the basic necessities of life and health. The Rural Clinic Development Initiative is designed to establish six medical clinics in partnership with, and located at, Presbyterian Churches in rural Cuba that will provide medicine and care not available, or difficult to get, from Cuban sources in those communities. In rural Cuba, where people often do not have a means to get to, or the opportunity to benefit from, the resources located in large urban centers like Havana, people turn to the church for their basic needs— including certain medical needs. This project will build, fund, stock, and staff six medical clinics (“Program Clinics”) housed in long-existing and established Presbyterian Churches located in rural Cuba where needs are great and supply is limited.

Navajo Water Project in NEW MEXICO will eventually provide water systems to 205 families at the Smith Lake Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. This Birthday Offering grant will provide a running water system for 40 families that do not have access to running water in their homes. They currently store their water in pots, pans, and 55-gallon drums. The grant will provide each household with a cistern, pump, sink, shower and all pipes for the installation of their water systems.

In 2017, we will answer the call to show Jesus’ love to the world by offering our prayers and financial support to three projects that support the critical need for shelter, health care and water:

DONATIONS FROM ANYONE ARE GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED— Please give as you have been blessed and support these life-changing projects. Visit www.presbyterianwomen.org to give or learn more about the offering.

Ever see this acronym in our Bulletin and wonder

what it means? It’s the EVENING BIRTHDAY

BUNCH— a group of Presbyterian women who get

together once a month to celebrate the birthdays of

that month. The venue is a different local

restaurant each month.

So, the next time you see this is a Bulletin, mark it

on your calendar, RSVP and JOIN THEM! May’s EBB

is being held at the Saigon Tokyo Bistro at 5:30 pm

on Tuesday, May 16th.

Church Bulletin Cover Pictures

The votes are in! Picture 2 was the overwhelming favorite by a margin of 9 to 1. However, about 1/4 of voters thought we should alternate both pictures with a few suggestions that we even switch out the cover photo on special occasions (as we did for the Easter Sunday service.)

We will forward this information to the “front office” and look forward to some changes to our bulletin in the near future!

St. Giles Team Trivia kicks off for the year with a bang!

By special request, songs of the 70’s featured artists Jimmy Buffet, The Doobie Brothers, Queen, The Allman Brothers, Foreigner, Fleetwood Mac, Paul McCartney and Elton John, among others. In addition to Dr. Seuss and Mottos, other question categories included State Capitals, History, Sports, Famous Movie Lines and Farm Animals.

The food was fabulous! Pizza, Nachos and Taco Dip, Tom’s Famous Meatballs, Mac and Cheese and a smorgasbord of desserts, including ice cream cake!

If you weren’t there, you missed out! The good news is, we still have a table or two open, so join us in June when we kick off “Hot Fun in the Summertime”!

Answers: Dr. Seuss—1. (a) his mother’s maiden name, 2. (a) And to Think that I saw It On Mulberry Street , 3. (b) 1937, 4. (d) The Cat in the Hat, 5. (c)Green Eggs and Ham; MOTTOS—1. Meow Mix, 2. McDonald’s, 3. The NY Tiimes, 4. GE, 5. Nike, 6. L’Oreal, 7. BMW, 8. Bounty Paper Towels

In a fight to the finish, 4 teams squared off in our first Team Trivia of the year. Many of our “regulars” were there and we welcomed several newbies, as well. The four teams, “Who Cares”, “The Magnificent 8”, “The Babysitter’s Club” and “BACON” were in a close race at half –time with scores of 130, 140, 70 and 98, respectively, with “The Magnificent 8” enjoying a small lead. Going into the final bonus round, “Who Cares” had pulled into first place with the 3 other teams all hot on their heals, with only 8 point differentiating the 2nd and 3rd place teams, BACON and “The Magnificent 8”… and “The Babysitters Club” not far behind.

The final bonus round, in which you can wager up to 50 points on your answer, covered the subject of “SURF MUSIC”. At this point, David Foster announced that they didn’t call him “Big Wave Dave” for nothing! The competition heated up! While listening to Jimmy Buffet pump out “Margaritaville”, the teams went to work. And the winner was… “The Magnificent 8”, pulling up from 3rd place into first! Yep, you guessed it—”Big Wave Dave”, among several other “heavyweights” on the team, claimed FIRST PLACE bragging rights for the First Team Trivia of 2017!
