A reoccurring statement I hear from people who struggle with church is that we have too many questions and we have been scolded for asking them. When this occurs, all too often, people just walk away from church. They may maintain their own personal faith, but when they give up on church, it also means they may simply walk away from God. Well there is good news and bad news to asking questions. First, the bad news. Your pastor does not have all the answers. It simply is not possible for me to fully know and understand everything about faith, the bible, and God. The Good News is – if you have questions, we can all work together to try and find answers. We have lots of good resources to help us too. First, we start with what the bible has to say about a question. We go first to the gospels, the life and ministry of Jesus, and then to the rest of the bible. Along with the bible as a resource, there are libraries full of books studying the bible that we could access. There are other churches around us who could help us tackle a question. We have professors at seminary who spend their days struggling with questions about God. We have our Bishop and synod office and 66 million Lutherans around the world. Surely with all of this depth of resources we can work on an answer for our questions. So we have lots of ways to find answers, we just need the questions. This summer there will be a box at the back of the church for questions so you can jot your question down and drop it in the box for discussion during sermons. This doesn’t mean that I will preach on your questions – simply read the question and then we can work together on answering them.

Questions, Questions, who has a Question??? A reoccurring statement I hear from people who struggle with church is that we have too many questions and we have been scolded for asking them. When this occurs, all too often, people just walk away from church. They may maintain their own personal faith, but when they give up on church, it also means they may simply walk away from God. There is no rule around these questions – you can ask anything and everyone is welcome to put a question in the box. Let’s exercise our faith by asking questions and working on the answers.

Edgewood Update from the Chair of the Board

First I need to send out a HUGE thank you to everyone who took part in the Edgewood Spring

Work Weekend. There were nearly 60 volunteers and over 1000 hours of volunteer labour –

Truly Amazing Support.

Second, the response to the Shoppers’ Drug Mart charity partnership is really starting to gather

momentum. Currently we have over 150,000 points, that is more than $250 worth of items the

camp can get – for FREE. Thanks for your ongoing support and don’t forget to tell others about

this great opportunity to support Edgewood.

The Proclamation – June 2015 Page 4

This weekend, members of the summer staff will be meeting at Edgewood for their first training

sessions. For those of you who have a passion for the “wood” part of Edgewood you will be

pleased to know that this weekend they will be focussing on the HITW (Home In The Woods)

program, honing their outdoor cooking and camping skills.

As you know from the AGM, 2015 is no ordinary year for Edgewood, the board has had to make

some major changes in the way we operate because of budget constraints and Ministry of the

Environment obligations to upgrade many of septic and waste water systems at camp. One

way that the board proposed to better manage the summer camp budget was to identify

summer camp positions that could be filled by volunteers for a week (or more) at a time. We

need volunteers to help in the kitchen, maintenance and housekeeping, arts and crafts, health

care (nurse), chaplain, and more. Your attendance and engagement at the AGM tells me you

are passionate about Edgewood – especially Summer Camp. Please continue to support us this

summer by volunteering. The 2015 Summer Volunteer Application form is available on

Edgewood’s website www.edgew-camp.on.ca, click on “Support Edgewood” then “Volunteer

Opportunities”. I am hoping to see many of you there in July/August. If volunteering during

the summer does not fit into your plan, you can still help out. There are always lots of projects

on the go (big and small) where we can benefit from your volunteer time. Just let me know you

are interested and I will follow up with an email or phone call.

Here is the information about the Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum Program to help Edgewood

Please support us! With the opportunity presented by Shoppers Drug Mart’s Optimum Program

you can help Edgewood in a new and exciting way – FOR FREE!

By donating some (or all) of your Shoppers Optimum Points to Edgewood you are making it

possible for us to use your points toward purchases of products and supplies we need for our

ongoing operational and fundraising activities. With enough points we can restock the camp’s

Health Centre (Nurse’s Cabin) with new medical and first aid supplies. We could also purchase

food, cleaning supplies, office supplies, batteries, etc. - the list is almost endless.

To donate your Shoppers Optimum Points, please visit: www.shoppersdrugmart.ca/donate. If

you are not presently a Shoppers Optimum Member, just ask for a card at your next visit and it

will be issued to you right on the spot - at no cost.

With your support, this initiative has the potential for us to “OPTIMIZE” our fundraising dollars

and allow us to continue to provide amazing camp experiences to everyone who enters the

gates at Edgewood.

CLWR Update – Your donations at work in Nepal

Reaching remote villages

As of May 15, our partner the Lutheran World Federation has reached more than 8,126 families

in remote villages in the Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Sindhupalchowk and Rasuwa districts,

delivering aid including blankets, tarps, hygiene kits and ready-to-eat food.

One such village is Dhusel, a community where the LWF has worked for eight years.

Out of the 338 houses that were there, 300 have collapsed entirely. Four people died in the

earthquake, as well as many animals – the wealth and livelihood of the people. The community

is already organizing itself, working together to salvage belongings and build new shelters.

The LWF is discussing with the community how to best provide medium-term shelter.

ACT Alliance partner agencies have reached thousands more people in initiatives including 52

medical camps in the Gorkha district (serving more than 2100 outpatients), and six water

filtration systems installed in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Gorkha districts.

Beyond Kathmandu Valley

Support is also extending to difficult to reach districts close to the epicentres of the

earthquakes.

In Gorkha district, the LWF will respond in the area around Barpak. They will provide integrated

support, meaning it will provide all the relief a village needs. In Gorkha, this will most likely

cover a wider range. People here have lost family members, homes and livelihoods (many

livestock were killed in collapsed stables and farming tools were destroyed). With the monsoon

rains about to start, shelter is the most urgent priority, followed by reconstruction. Since some

people’s livelihoods are gone, food assistance will be needed in a few weeks’ time. Where

toilets and water pipes have been damaged, LWF will provide water, sanitation and hygiene.

Psychosocial support will help people deal with the trauma of the earthquake and make sure

that vulnerable people are not overlooked.

Lutherans in Nepal

LWF has been working in Nepal for decades, which has given them the resources and

experience needed to provide relief quickly. There is an “Emergency Hub” of staff members and

aid items located in Kathmandu, which meant that LWF staff were able to distribute items like

blankets, tarps and ready-to-eat food to 400 families in Kathmandu within hours of the first

earthquake.

You can be proud to know that existing Lutheran development support has given many

Nepalese communities coping skills and resources that will help them rebuild, and the LWF has

the experience, influence and resources to address urgent emergency needs right now, as well

as long-term recovery.

Thank you to everyone that helped out at the garage sale and BBQ. Lots of hands helped out

and even more people made donations. Thanks for your support.

Here is a list of upcoming summer services that will be led by lay-leaders within the church:

July 12th – Frank Siragusa will be leading the service and reading the sermon for Convention Sunday as prepared by the Bishop July 19th – Lukas Habel will be leading the service, Donald Hilborn (Robert’s brother) will be presenting the sermon on his work in Africa with the United Church missions July 26th – Marshall Weiss will be leading the service, Jim Rodger will be presenting the sermon August 23rd – Nancy Hilborn will be leading the service, Alan Dyck will be presenting the sermon on his work with FIDA in Haiti

BLANKETS IN THE MAKING There is one blanket in the making. It is for the daughter of the lady you plays the piano for the services at Westmount, where Elvera is. The daughter Sandra is very ill and Pastor Bonnie requested the blanket. The colours are leaf green, black and white. If you have a square I need it so I can lay out the blanket this week. DONATIONS We had a donation of beautiful wool from Bill Hackbart, Carole's husband. I have talked to some of the knitters about doing a fundraiser for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Carole's grandson Jack is a Juvenile Diabetic and it is a cause Carole would have supported; as well as Jean Weber and I have close relatives with it. It is still in the planning stage. I hope to get patterns and wool distributed to our knitters. I also got another donation for Betty, a neighbour of Janet and Bob Richmonds, which will make wonderful hats and mitts. There will be more information later. Thanks again for all your knitting.

WHO’S YOUR DADDY? A seminary professor was vacationing with his wife in Gatlinburg , TN right about the time World War I was over. One morning, they were eating their breakfast at a little restaurant, hoping to enjoy a quiet, family meal. While they were waiting for their food, they noticed a distinguished looking, white-haired man moving from table to table, visiting with the guests. The professor leaned over and whispered to his wife, 'I hope he doesn't come over here.' But sure enough, the man did come over to their table. 'Where are you folks from?' he asked in a friendly voice. 'Oklahoma ,' they answered. 'Great to have you here in Tennessee ,' the stranger said. 'What do you do for a living?' 'I teach at a seminary’, he replied. 'Oh, so you teach preachers how to preach, do you? Well, I've got a really great story for you.' And with that, the gentleman pulled up a chair and sat down at the table with the couple. The professor groaned and thought to himself, 'Great .. Just what I need ...another preacher story!'

Page 10: The Proclamation - New Dundeestjamesnewdundee.com/files/June_2015_Proclamation.pdf · The Proclamation – June 2015 Page 2 There is no rule around these questions

The Proclamation – June 2015 Page 10

The man started, 'See that mountain over there? ‘(pointing out the restaurant window). Not far from the base of that mountain, there was a boy born to an unwed mother. He had a hard time growing up, because every place he went, he was always asked the same question, 'Hey boy, Who's your daddy?' Whether he was at school, in the grocery store or drug store, people would ask the same question, 'Who's your daddy?' He would hide at recess and lunch time from other students. He would avoid going in to stores because that question hurt him so bad. When he was about 12 years old, a new preacher came to his church. He would always go in late and slip out early to avoid hearing the question, 'Who's your daddy?' But one day, the new preacher said the benediction so fast that he got caught and had to walk out with the crowd. Just about the time he got to the back door, the new preacher, not knowing anything about him, put his hand on his shoulder and asked him, 'Son, who's your daddy?' The whole church got deathly quiet. He could feel every eye in the church looking at him. Now everyone would finally know the answer to the question, 'Who's your daddy?' 'This new preacher, though, sensed the situation around him and using discernment that only the Holy Spirit could give, said the following to that scared little boy... 'Wait a minute! I know who you are! I see the family resemblance now, You are a child of God.' With that he patted the boy on his shoulder and said, 'Boy, you've got a great inheritance. Go and claim it.' 'With that, the boy smiled for the first time in a long time and walked out the door a changed person.. He was never the same again. Whenever anybody asked him, 'Who's your Daddy?' he'd just tell them , 'I'm a Child of God..'' The distinguished gentleman got up from the table and said, 'Isn't that a great story?' The professor responded that it really was a great story! As the man turned to leave, he said, 'You know, if that new preacher hadn't told me that I was one of God's children, I probably never would have amounted to anything!' And he walked away. The seminary professor and his wife were stunned. He called the waitress over & asked her, 'Do you know who that man was -- the one who just left that was sitting at our table?' The waitress grinned and said, 'Of course. Everybody here knows him. That's Ben Hooper. He's the governor of Tennessee.' Someone in your life today needs a reminder that they're one of God's children. 'The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of God stands forever.'

YOU'RE ONE OF GOD'S CHILDREN. HAVE A GREAT DAY.
