The Project MEGA and the Barbaiia Transformer Substation

The MEGA project
The aim of the MEGA project was to use a new electrical infrastructure to create the preconditions for further economic development of the rural Spanish province of Galicia. This entailed expanding the distribution grid.
With the support of the regional government Junta de Galicia, the MEGA 1991 project was started by the local power utility Union Fenosa; with an investment volume of approx. 450 million US$, it is the largest project in the history of Spanish power
distribution.
The concept
Standardized installations -
an affordable way to assure power supply
Under the MEGA project, 18 stations (66 kV) and 17 stations (132 kV) of identical construction were commissioned, for feeding into the higher-order 220-kV and 400-kV grids.
The concept of a uniform design for standardized installations forms the foundation for an affordably single-sourced package.
Thanks to designed-in standardization, the outlay for engineering work and approval procedures was cut substantially right from
Gas-insulated substations -affordable engineering excellence
The choice of equipment fell on the SF(; gas-insulated substation with three-phase metal enclosure from the ELK-O and ENK ranges of ABB Calor Emag Schaltanlagen
AG.
Featuring the same substation bay pitch of 1.2 m, the ELK-O type can be used for the
132-kV voltage level and the ENK series for the 66-kV voltage level, so that in terms of simplified building planning based on
standardized d imensions the substations are CISClrly predeslinecl lor a roject like MEGA.

The compactly dimensioned ELK-O substation , with its minimized space requirement, is particularly well suited for installation in densely populated areas, like the city centre of Orense.
Autonomous modules, assembled beforehand in the factory to form a bay unit, and efficiently produced for short delivery times, give the substation a high degree of flexibility for any subsequent
el'.pansions ill acity
the project's beginning . The resultantly
reduced complexity of the network as a whole was also of real advantage during erection work and site supervision. For the utility itself, what's more, the training outlay for the operation staff can be downsized, and the know-how acquired for one station can be utilized throughout the entire grid. The long-term advantages also include high system availability, showing up at the
bottom line in terms of a higher malfunction reserve coupled with a reduced spares inventory requirement.
The ELK-O substations are flexible in actual use as well .
Thanks to its gas-tight enclosure. the substation is completely protected from environmental impacts, enabling this maintenance-free deSign to be installed anywhere, even in dusty regions and salty
atmospheres. So they can quite safely be located near the coast in places like Gondomar and Cedeira

The Barbaiia transformer substation
The people who planned the Barbafia transformer substation in the middle of Orense have done a virtuous job. The transformer substation has been built underground in the city centre , successfully concealed by a park on top of it called "Parque de Almeda".
The compact dimensions of the ELK-O substation were a particularly cogent consideration here, in view of the construction costs involved.
The transformer cooling concept is particularly ingenious.
In harmony with its surroundings
The requisite separate cooling provided for transformers is usually accompanied by fan noise emissions, which here would have proved less than pleasant for the neighbouring residents and visitors to the park.
As an alternative to cost-intensive, low-noise fans, a waterfall was created, which functions as a heat exchanger and simultaneously the fountain masks the noise of the fans.
Passers-by perceive the fountain as both a visual and acoustic enrichment.

MEGA line 66kV
Under the MEGA project , 35 new transformer substations, 11 ,000 km of transmission lines, and approx. 3,000 high- and medium-voltage transformers were installed.
Besides assuring a dependable supply of electricity, the planners also aimed to integrate the facilities involved harmoniously into the surrounding countryside.
