Rudy, an Australian multigenerational labradoodle, is the Rams’ new four-legged faculty member, a therapy dog with her headquarters in the counseling office as she makes a positive impact on the overall environment at Badin High School.

“Rudy will help bring a calming atmosphere to Badin,” said Angie Briggs Bucheit ‘95, a Badin guidance counselor who helped bring the concept to fruition. “There is a lot of stress and anxiety in a teenager’s world, and Rudy will be here to help lessen that stress.”

Bucheit heard about the idea of a therapy dog during a conference in Denver in the summer of 2017. When she broached the idea to her colleagues and the administration at Badin, it was met with resounding support.

“There are so many benefits to having a therapy dog at Badin,” Principal Brian Pendergest ’90 said. “Once we started talking about the possibilities, everything just fell into place. She will be a blessing to Badin.”

Bucheit said. “Charlotte’s legacy will be an important part of Badin High School.”

When Rudy was introduced to the student body during an assembly on March 22, the students wore pink – Charlotte’s favorite color. They welcomed Rudy with a quiet “golf clap” so as not to unduly frighten her, and two Cincinnati television stations were on hand to record the event.

Local companies have stepped up to take care of all of Rudy’s needs – Pet Wants Hamilton, Mike’s Mobile Veterinary Service, Soft Touch Pups

Grooming and more – and a private donor paid for the purchase of Rudy.

“This is very exciting – an innovative idea to meet the needs of the student,” said Bucheit, whose family of six will keep Rudy at their home. “From concept to reality, this whole effort has been such a joy to make happen. Our mascot is the Ram, but Rudy will be our inspiration.”

Dear Badin Alumni and Friends,

These are exciting times at Badin High School. We have been working with the architects from SHP Design to create our new building. The Student Development Center will connect the main building to the Pfirman Family Activity Center and serve as a hub for our student services – Campus Ministry, Counseling, Athletic and Advancement offices. Each of these departments play a key component as we strive every day to inspire young men and women to achieve their personal best, live their faith and lead the future.

The Badin Faith Formation programs are being revamped, including the annual retreats and our new Christian Service

program. These two programs work hand in hand with our Religion department to help our students along their faith journey. In addition, we are proud to announce our re-affiliation with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. The Sisters have played an important role in our history and will now influence current and future students of Badin. Their educational hallmarks are a perfect match to the core values of Badin High School. All aspects of faith formation will allow our students to be challenged to discover their passion and to become the person God calls them to be.

We continue to provide academic excellence through a rigorous curriculum that allows each student to be challenged at his/her academic level. The departments evaluate their courses to make sure we are providing the knowledge and skills our students will need to be successful in their future. We help our students network through career days and guest speakers. We’ve had multiple speakers at Badin this year talking about the opportunities that await them. Students attend local, regional and national competitions in DECA and Technology events. Our students consistently win awards at these events and demonstrate the skills they are developing in our classes. We are blessed to work with terrific students who become future leaders in their given vocation.

All of the strides Badin is making and the success of our current students are only possible due to the support and generosity of our donors. We continue to meet with alumni and donors for our major gift initiative. The We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe initiative was started to address the needs that have been identified through the strategic planning, campus master and feasibility study process. The We Remember, We Celebrate, We Believe theme recognizes our history and sets the stage for our next 50 years. I want to thank you for your support of Badin and ask that you continue to support us as we inspire young men and women to achieve their personal best, live their faith and lead the future.

If you are not aware of the tremendous opportunities our students have and the success of our alumni, please make sure to look at this Shades of Green, read the electronic alumni news we send out and check us out on our website, Facebook page and other social media sites. We have a lot to be proud of and to celebrate. If you would like to learn more about the capital campaign initiative, please contact Kelli Kurtz or me to set up an appointment.

If you ever have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you for your support and God bless you and your family.

Waggoner named National Merit finalist

Badin High senior Jacob Waggoner was named a National Merit Scholarship finalist. Waggoner is the son of Brad and Paula Waggoner of Hamilton and a graduate of St. Joseph School. He is one of less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors to earn finalist status out of more than 1.6 million students who took the PSAT in the fall of their junior year. The National Merit

Scholarship Corp. will award some 7,500 scholarships with a total value of $32 million. Jacob is a well-rounded student who knows his way around technology, earned a first place in state DECA marketing/education competition, and went to state in cross country and track. His top college choices are the University of Alabama or the University of Oklahoma, where he plans to major in Management Information Systems.

Mobile app earns multiple awards

Badin students developed a mobile app that won an 8th District challenge from the office of U.S. Rep. Warren Davidson – who came to Badin to present the award – and then a larger team perfected and enhanced the app for the annual TechOlympics in Cincinnati. That improved app, which would help people get involved in their local community, won the TechOlympics Showcase, the premier competition at that event. Students who developed the app for the 8th Congressional District Challenge included seniors Nick Eyl, Jon Moran and Jacob Waggoner. Joining their team for the Tech Olympics were seniors Kyla Boback, Jessica Tri-Rudolf and junior Christopher Hetterich. A total of 21 Badin students attended the TechOlympics, held at the Millennium Hotel in Cincinnati, Feb. 24-25.

Thanks to the support of Badin benefactors, the We Remember. We Celebrate. We Believe Campaign for Badin’s Next 50 Years is nearing the finish line! At this printing, more than $2,378,723 has been raised toward the $3 million goal. Based on available funding, construction of the new student development center will begin this summer, and open in time for school to resume after Christmas Break in January 2019.

Student Development CenterWith 30% enrollment growth over the past 7 years, building an addition at Badin has become vitally important. After tremendous study, it was determined that the most eco-nomical solution is to move current offices in the school building to the center, freeing up precious classroom space. The new center will also serve a number of purposes includ-ing creating a lobby extension for theatre performances, a safe place for students to gather during and after school, and an enclosed addition that adjoins the PFAC to the main school building for class changes and functions.

The 8,000 square foot facility will include: • Student Commons • Guidance department • The Hamilton Community Foundation College and Career Center • Campus ministry and Christian service offices • Advancement, admissions, marketing, alumni and athletic offices

Badin High School was proud to officially re-establish its ties with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur during its annual Heritage Mass in mid-October. The Sisters previously ran Notre Dame High School in Hamilton, the all-girls school that was open from 1886-1966.

“We’re thrilled to be able to do this,” said Kim Hensley Graham ’97, Badin’s director of alumni relations. “The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur have such a rich history in Hamilton and their ministry of teaching is a great fit for Badin High School.”

Graham, Gina Miserocchi Helms ’90, Badin’s director of campus ministry, and Badin chaplain Father Ed Pratt had been in discussions for some months with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur to arrange for the re-affiliation.

EndowmentThanks to a lead $1.2 million gift from John Osso ‘40, Badin is building a healthy endowment to support tuition assistance, and to enable us to attract and retain the best faculty.

Badin’s endowment is a restricted investment fund that serves as an insurance policy for our future. Only the interest from the fund can be spent, leaving the principal of the fund, or the corpus, in tact. Professional investment managers outside of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati manage the fund’s growth. An endowment enables Badin to diversify our income and reduces our vulnerability to economic crisis like we experienced in 2008-2009.

The most significant support we receive to grow our endowment comes in the form of gifts to the capital campaign, formation of new scholarship funds and planned or estate gifts.

Badin families currently have more than $1 million in financial need a year, and yet limited funds only allow us to satisfy one-third of those needs. Our endowment will give us the opportunity to offer more financial assistance to families.

We need your help to make this a reality! We invite all members of the Badin community to join us in making a difference for Badin students through this campaign. Gifts can be made one-time, or pledged over 3 years.

Badin alumni representing every decade volunteered their time for our capital campaign PhonAThon March 5, 6 and 7. More than $100,000 was committed to the campaign in just three days! Please consider making your gift today!

Please call Kelli Kurtz at 513.863.3993, ext. 116 for more information, or visit our website at BadinHS.org.

“We have been celebrating the 50-year legacy of Badin High School for the past two years,” BHS Principal Brian Pendergest ’90 said in the fall, “and what better time to re-establish our ties with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur than now.”

Badin opened in the fall of 1966, the merger of all-girls Notre Dame High and all-boys Hamilton Catholic.

The teaching tenants of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur feature seven “hallmarks” that can be effectively folded into the education at Badin High School and make for a great synergy between the school and the order.

BADIN re-establishes ties with Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur

“Our last Sister of Notre Dame, Sr. Julia Marie Schutte, retired in 1994, but the spirit of Notre Dame and the Sisters continues to live on through today,” Graham said. “It will be wonderful to have the Sisters back at Badin and extend the tradition of excellence in education that is their hallmark.”

Notre Dame High is still standing in Hamilton. It is the site of senior citizen housing on Second Street, across the street from St. Joseph Consolidated School.

Performing surgeries until 6:30 am the next morning, she exited the operating room to meet the governor of Nevada and provide updates alongside him on the status of the patients at the hospital. Says Dr. Streit of this event, “Every trauma surgeon wonders what they would do in a situation like this. Until a mass casualty event happens, nobody really knows how they will respond. You always wonder, am I good enough? After this night, I sort of stopped, exhaled, and said yes, I can do this. If anything positive came out of this misery for me as an individual, it’s the knowledge that I can do the job, that I have what it takes, that I can be there to help try to make things better.” Streit, married for three years to Dr. Erek Majka, is attached to Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas. The Air Force and the University of Nevada-Las Vegas have a partnership through the University Medical Center. She has a six-year commitment to the Air Force that started with her Las Vegas assignment in the summer of 2017…this after 11 years of schooling following college.
