SHS In the Know: Department Highlight

The Med Surg Unit cares for a variety of patients, medical, surgical,

pediatrics, and orthopedic to name a few. We take care of all their basic

and immediate needs on a daily basis– and we make sure to go above

and beyond to guarantee they are well taken care of. But who takes care

of the homeless population who has no food, shelter, clothes, or personal

items?

The Med Surg Unit felt that they could assist with this troubling problem

by doing a Homeless Shelter Donation Drive. Every staff member

donated items that the shelter needed. These items were: bath towels,

water-proof boots, heavy jackets and a variety of clothing, coffee,

creamer, sugar, breakfast cereals and granola bars, toothbrushes,

toothpaste, foot powder, new socks and underwear, cleaning supplies,

laundry soap, toilet paper, body soap and room deodorizers. Last but not

least, first aid items like band-aides, bandages, gauze, antibiotic

ointment, and ace wraps.

These items were brought to the Shelter by Med Surg staff on March 17th,

2015 and presented to the Director of The Bridge Emergency Shelter,

Laurie Knutson. She was very grateful and stated, “It warms our hearts

to know that others think about the people that we serve”.

The unit couldn’t forget about our 4 legged friends during this donation

drive so $100.00 was donated to Noah’s Ark No Kill Animal Shelter. They

too were very thankful for the generosity shown by the Med Surg staff!

A HUGE thank you to all the staff on Med Surg and the PCC nursing

students for donating your time, your items and your hearts!!!! Great

teamwork!

Maureen Pyle, RN, BSN

Director Med Surg Unit.
