Spring Luncheon 2019Dorothy Hughes, [email protected]

The Purdue Women's Club 2019 Spring Luncheon was held on Thursday, April 4 in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom. The guest speaker was State Representative Sheila Klinker.

The afternoon began with a welcome from our PWC President, Linda Dolby. Words of inspiration were provided by our PWC President-Elect Joanne Small.

Attendees were then delighted with a lunch of Salmon or Tofu Spud Salad, rolls and a Raspberry Chocolate Mousse. In honor of Sheila, even the rolls were colorful!

The Director of Span Plan, Malissa Ayala provided some background about how the donations provided by PWC benefit students in a variety of ways. Paige Allen, a former Span Plan student shared her story detailing how Span Plan helped get her college career started via a Span Plan Grant. Meeting with Span Plan staff also helped her summon the courage to continue her education. Although she started as a part time student at Purdue, she continued her education at through Indiana Wesleyan. She has come full circle and now works at Purdue as an Assistant Director for Academic Advising & Recruiting in Purdue’s Veterinary College. Paige credits her start at Span Plan in developing the persistence to continue her education.

PWC member, Aura Lee Emsweller led a musical tribute to our guest speaker with lyrics written by her son adapting the song, “Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue” to Five Foot Two, In Her Shoes”. The crowd loved it!

Ms. Klinker shared her heartwarming story of how she evolved from being a runner up for Purdue’s Golden Girl to a career as an elementary education teacher and later in public service.

Three of our 50+ members shared reflections of their experiences in PCW:Temple Pearson shared, “I'm thankful each day for PWC and the lovely friends I

have met by joining Interest Groups. It is wonderful to have this Organization that is open to anyone who needs a friend."

Sue Scholer commented, “When i joined, PWC was a way to meet spouses from other areas of the University. The interest groups through the years provided chances to try new activities. More recently, it has been good to see the opportunity for membership opened to more women so that it becomes much more of a community organization. The luncheons are just a regular part of my calendar (except when I was in the Legislature) and have provided many outstanding presentations over the years+."

"I think this is a fabulous organization of women and the lunches twice a year are well done. So many interest groups to choose from. I keep making new friends every time I join a new group. I've been involved in the bowling for over 30 years. Glad this organization is open to anyone, not just Women at Purdue." - Judy HarshmanTheir words and smiles are certainly indicative of why they remain connected to PWC after all these years!

  • Span Plan Turns 50!Dorothy Hughes, [email protected]

Span Plan Nontraditional Student Services, a Purdue Student Services Program and philanthropic focus of the PWC, celebrated 50 years of service to Purdue and the Greater Lafayette Community in a program held in the Purdue Memorial Union on March 26, 2019. Included in the program were a variety of topics and speakers ending with a champagne toast looking forward to the next 50 years of service.

In attendance were several Purdue dignitaries including Frank Dooley, Senior Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning; Executive Director of Student Success Programs, Dan Carpenter; and Senior Associate Director of Student Success Programs, Dennis Bowling.

The Program’s current Director, Malissa Ayala, opened the event sharing her excitement to continue the program’s legacy in the modern world moving the Program forward to continue meeting the changing needs of nontraditional students.

Jenna Rickus, Associate Vice President for Teaching and Learning, knowing the legacy and potential of this program, shared her excitement having this program under her supervision.

Betty Nelson, Dean of Students Emerita, shared the very human side of Span Plan’s founder, Helen Schleman, as well as her passion for helping women be successful and not lost in the success of spouse beginning in the late 60’s. She developed the program to not only provide financial assistance, but also to include as much life and academic counseling as needed. Helen was clearly a force a nature and decades ahead of her time.

Sandy Monroe, Executive Director of Undergraduate Advising, and a former Span Plan staff member illustrated the generational contributions of Span Plan’s successful students as she shared a real life scenario of a former student’s struggles to finish a degree and, because the degree led to modeling the importance of higher education and a successful career, the student’s children are all also college educated and thriving in their careers.

Sally Watlington shared brief anecdotes about Helen Schleman including Heleninfluencing her to join the Navy where she served for 23 years. When Sally left the military, she reconnected with Helen helping her with researching and analyzing data to support more services for Span Plan students and improved benefits for women working at Purdue. She is also very involved in the community.

Three former directors were introduced, Lynne Horngren, Dorothy Hughes and Peggy Favorite. Lynne is currently continuing her career at Purdue as Director of the College of Science Undergraduate Education and Academic Advising Office. Dorothy retired from Purdue in 2016, and Peggy in 2018; both are thriving in post-retirement careers. All three former directors wholeheartedly endorsed the importance of the Span Plan Program and their joy and appreciation for having been part of its legacy, that, as illustrated by Sandy Monroe, has an ongoing positive and rippling impact on families and society. 6

    mailto:[email protected]

  • Dorothy shared, “I always encouraged my students, often saying, ‘Your education is one thing that can never be taken away from you.’”

As a philanthropic organization, the Purdue Women’s Club (PWC) financially supports Span Plan Nontraditional Student Services and has for the last twenty years. The current PWC Club President, Linda Dolby, reported that over the 20 years PWC has donated a total of $150,000+ to the Purdue SPAN Plan Program. As the Span Plan website outlines:

    • Donations from individuals and organizations are central to Span Plan programs and many of the services we providewould not exist without the generosity of our donors.

    • Support from Span Plan services mean these students have the opportunity continue their education at Purdue with thekind of assistance that is so crucial to their success.

    • Span Plan has provided guidance and support for adult nontraditional students since 1968 and is dedicated to assistingthese students achieve their goals.

Span Plan Thanks PWC!Malissa Ayala, submitted by Dorothy Hughes, [email protected]

As long-time benefactors of Span Plan, the PWC had members present to join in the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Purdue Program that provides a wide array of services and funding for nontraditional students at Purdue. The PWC board chose to provide flowers and a student quartet for the celebration as it continues its enthusiastic support of this valued Purdue Program. The current director sent along this note of thanks verbalizing her appreciation. Dear PWC Members,

As I take a moment to reflect on last night’s 50th Celebration, I cannot help being humbled by the continued support of PWC in Span Plan’s mission of serving nontraditional students. It was wonderful meeting many more members and sharing the experience of the Program’s history and forward momentum.

I am grateful for Rene’s enthusiasm as liaison and her work with the PWC’s Span Plan committee. The Club support of the student quartet made for the perfect background to celebrate. Additionally, the flowers were beautiful and added a testament to Linda and Rene’s endless talents. Both the music and floral arrangement were perfect and possible because of PWC.As I said in remarks last night, the best part of this position has been the new meetings and women I consider friends – the members of PWC are part of that group that I feel lucky to be able to know, learn from, and enjoy a wonderful relationship with. Many, many thanks as we begin our next 50 years of Span Plan!

    In friendship,Malissa Ayala

A delectable farm to table lunch prepared by Lauren Reed, the Prophetstown Chef, wowed Newcomers at their March 1 meeting at the home of Dr. Lisa Hoverman.

Chef Reed not only prepared a delicious meal for the group, but also spoke about her journey to become a chef which included informing the group about how she was selected as one of the Super Bowl chefs to prepare food for the VIPs.

The group was able to interact with Chef Reed in a Q&A session at the end of the meal. The Newcomers Team would like to give a big “Thank you” to the women who helped contribute to make this event successful.

    Interest Group Updates Garden Gals

    Suzanne Collins, [email protected]

Spring has sprung, and Garden Gals are ready to head outside for tours of local gardens for ideas and inspiration. The interest group opened their year with inside presentations on Building a Better Brain through food choices with Kirsten Serrano in February. That was followed in March with Growing Micro Greens with Kathryn Reeves. April’s meeting had Purdue Extension Specialist Rosie Learner instructing the group on identification of conifers. The lively session helped answer questions about which conifers grow well in our area, and what to avoid. Hands-on samples displayed the variety available in conifers.

May through September will be garden walking tours. Hopefully the Garden Gals’ luck will continue with good weather on tour days. We will be all over Tippecanoe County each 2nd Tuesday of the month, beginning at 2 PM and usually ending by 4 PM. Side trips on non-meeting dates will take us to surrounding counties for those interested in an expanded day away focusing on gardening inspiration. Garden Gals will finish the year in October and November with inside events before putting the gardens to bed for the winter.

If you think you would be interested in joining Garden Gals, please contact Suzanne Collins at [email protected] to be placed on the e-mail list for notifications.

Educational Excursions Trip to Louisville! Connie Davis, Esther Madren, and Debra Sherman,

    [email protected]

We had a very busy but interesting trip to Louisville on April 14. Our first stop was to the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, where we saw bats made for all ages and levels, many still made largely by hand.

Then it was on to the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. Bourbon is more than a drink in Kentucky. It’s part of the culture, tradition and heritage of the community. We bravely tried the tastings and they definitely got better as we sipped! However, the bourbon balls were the hit.

Lunch was at Bristol Bar & Grill, a few steps from the above venues. We enjoyed a buffet that included the Louisville favorite, Hot Brown Sandwich, as well as a Derby Pie.

Then it was on to Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum. We had a walking tour, movie, and visit to museum and gift shop. This was a very busy trip and only a small peek into all that Louisville has to offer. It certainly is a location worthy of a long weekend!

Keep tuned to the newsletter and webpage to see where we plan to go in Fall, 2019 and Spring, 2020!
