PresIDeNt’s message

November is a month where we focus on Thanksgiving, holidays, on-going projects and fun!

Thanksgiving Thoughts: I started to write a list of all the people I wanted to thank and remembered that our Bulletin Editor, Eman (aka my boss), told me to keep my message short. So, here’s a short thank you to all of the amazing people who donate their time and energy to the CWC. With your help, we put on the Modern Campus Tour, The Fall Gathering and Activities Fair, the “Our Town” meetup and the Activity Group meetings (see page 2). We also worked behind the scenes on communications (Bulletin, Web and Facebook), membership management, club administration and accounting tasks. I am also really thankful

Directed and Introduced by John Davidson. In Ibsen’s 1882 drama, the good Dr. Stockman is fighting to rid his town of poison from the local tannery leaking into the famous bath spas. Such is the plays’ timeliness that it could have been written last week: sibling rivalry, a political cover-up by hypocritical pragmatists, and the thin line between hubris and the moral high ground. The drama reaches a rapid boil in the seething confrontation between brothers that concludes the first act. Ibsen’s brilliance reveals Stockman from all perspectives; his unbending morals and contempt for the unthinking majority can seem both radical and invigorating. It is as disturbingly true to life as a play can get.

a “CatWalk” arouND tHe CamPus CoNstruCtIoN

By Judi Cowell & Romy Wyllie

Being curious CATS, we wanted to know about the current campus developments Jim Cowell and Don O’Neil from Caltech Facilities gave us a sneak peek. This article is a brief photo tour of our “CATwalk” around the campus construction (see campus map). Our walk starts with the new Bechtel Residence (1) for undergraduates on the North end of campus. From there, we take a peek at the construction site where the Winnett Student Center used to be and the new Hameetman Center (2) is being built. Tucked behind Guggenheim is the newly finished Center for Autonomous Systems Technology (CAST) (3). Across the sidewalk, Sloan is covered in scaffolding and the top three floors are being completely renovated into the Ronald and Maxine Linde Hall of Mathematics and Physics (4). Our final stop is at the biggest project, the Chen Neuroscience Research Building (5). It is just getting started on the corner of Del Mar and Wilson. Enjoy the photo tour and see how the campus is evolving. If you are interested learning more, either as a CATS docent, or on a Modern Campus tour, contact Romy Wyllie (626) 794-7773 or check out the CATS web site: http://cats.caltech.edu
