G reeting Brothers of the Talented Tenth District:

I greet you in the name of our Supreme Basileus and I wish each of you many Blessings from GOD. It has truly been a pleasure serving you as your District Representative for this great District and Fraternity. As we begin to assemble our administration for this upcoming fiscal year, I ask that each of you have an open mind and reflect on what can you do to help improve our Fraternity.

O ver the next several months I will begin to assemble, a team of Brothers who I truly believe is committed to working with the entire brotherhood. There are a few initiatives that I have directed the State representatives to conduct that will en-sure our membership in our District is truly represented. It is also imperative that each chapter show up at the Conclave in Little and be engaged in the meeting. I will expect that our District be attentive during these meetings. We have some important decisions to make as we select our national officers for the next two years. A new Tenth District logo has been developed to show where we are headed.

I t is my intent to host several meetings throughout the District during my term as DR. A serious dialog on our membership, MSP, Code of Conduct, protocol, scholarships and other essential business operations of this fraternity needs.

I am creating the Omega Leadership Institute – Tenth District. This institute will assist in the grooming of our brotherhood and get us back on the track of Uplift. By brothers completing certificate program of this institute each will be a certified leader of Omega. This program will cover a wide range of disciplines such as emotional intelli-gence, protocols & parliamentary procedures, customer service, advocacy, scholarship application process, and of course leadership. There will be some reading assignments associated with each course (Scholarship). The time is now for the development of our membership. All past DR’s will be apart of this process as well as your current leadership team.

F all Council Meeting will be held the weekend of October 20 – 21, 2006, in Milwaukee, WI. The Brothers in Milwaukee are planning several events for your entertainment. There will be a MSP training (not certifi-cation) on Friday, October 20, 2006 beginning at 6 PM. Please, if you are planning a MSP for the upcoming year, make sure that your key individuals are present. Please register ASAP for this District Council Meeting.

I am adding, an additional District Council meeting to be held sometime in January 2007. I would like to have more regularly scheduled meetings to keep us all on track and to evaluate the performance of brothers enrolled in the Omega Leadership Institute.

I am asking that each chapter begin to identify a succession plan and a 5 year outlook for each chapter. I want to have every chapter to submit their scheduled events to the DKRS and the IT Chair. I am trying to plan my calendar for the year so that I may visit each area.

I am requesting that each State Representative prepare a town hall meeting with the brothers in their jurisdiction. This is a format that I plan to stay in touch with the brothers and to disseminate the correct information and to also stay engaged with what is going on in the District. Please work with the State Reps in achieving this for me.

F inally brothers, if you have any issues or concerns with this administration or with any brother, please go to the source for your information and answers. I will not tolerate back biting or un-brotherly conduct in this administration.

B ro. LaCollis Reed, Illinois State Representative for the Tenth District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. gave the keynote speech. He challenged the brothers present to ask themselves where do they go from here. He agreed that the fraternity did a lot of good things in their community and provided good service. However, he challenged those present to look at what more they could do considering the current climate of the community. Indeed, every brother heard the challenge and went away with a newfound zeal to hold high the aims and ideals of this great fraternity.

Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter– Walking for a Cure

March of Dimes & Sickle Cell Anemia By LeMarr “Spedy” Ketchens

The Que-mmunicator Page 6

C hicago, IL-Every year the March of Dimes Walk is held. The brothers of Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter, coupled with a few other brothers from Sigma Omega

Chapter, volunteered their Sunday morning for Community Service. A quote from the March of Dimes website: “Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death and many lifelong disabilities. You can help the March of Dimes fight prematurely by taking steps in Walk-America.” We held it down at check-point #4.

F or the past couple of years, FedEx has sponsored Checkpoint #4. check point#4 has also paired us with the Mason Brothers of Harmony Lodge #88 (PHA) and the Sisters of Pride of Harmony #144 (PHA). All together we made sure that the walkers had Gatorade, Granola Bars, Water, and Encouragement. This was a 6-mile walk. So, some of the walkers really needed the encouragement because our checkpoint was right before the home stretch and final check point #5.

T his year was really special because my 9-year old son decided he wanted to help pass out Granola Bars. Why is this special? Because it was raining fairly good, but he held the box as he shouted, “Granola Bars, right here and don’t forget to get your cards stamped at the end of the table!” That was incredible. Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter, were also able to raise over $500 for this great cause.

C hicago, IL- On June 10, 2006, Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter (Chicago) of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., volunteered for the 32nd Sickle Cell Disease Association of Illinois (SCDAI) Walk/Jog/Bike-A-Thon (WJBAT). Not only did the chapter volunteer, but they were an official co-sponsor of the event - this was achieved by the chapter donating $500. An additional $100 was donated by a couple of other brothers. Several other Black Greek-Letter Organizations (BGLO), as part of the NPHC of Chicago, were available to assist with the setup of the Health Fair, the stage, music setup, the event tables and banners, and clean up.

S ickle Cell primarily affects people in the Black community so volunteering for this event is very important.

D ue to the weather, participation was not vast. A couple hundred showing participants volunteered to walk, jog, or bike on the beautiful lakefront of Lake Michigan. Brother Michael Johnson, PGG Chapter Social Action Chairman, had some very big shoes to fill at this position. Of course, he has taken this position very serious and keeps the chapter on point. Rho Gamma Gamma always looks forward to working with the community and assisting Black Americans.

O n August 10, 2006, the city of Chicago had been blanketed with rain. For some, this could be consid-ered a very dreary day, but not for six (6) young black high school students. Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. held a Scholars Banquet that was to honor the scholastic achievement of these six students.

T he scholarships are appropriately named after Cor-neal A Davis, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Brother Davis was a state of Illinois Congressman, who served there for almost 40 years (1943-1979), and one of his main focal points was Education.

E very year, the chapter attempts to award scholarships to high school student within the Chicago land area. Melvin Jefferson, Jr., the chapter Basileus (President) spoke briefly explaining, “Rho Gamma Gamma has not al-ways been able to provide scholarships, but, this year, we will provide six (6) scholarships again”. Last year Rho Gamma Gamma provided six (6) scholarships to well de-serving young black students, while in previous years four (4) high school students received the awards.

T he young adults are judged based on an essay, high school grades, community service, and a few other essentials. Each student is awarded a $1000 Scholarship Award, which is given in two equal installments. The first $500 is given before the scholar attends college. Hence, the Scholars Banquet in August. As a way to promote scholarship even more, each scholar must achieve a first semester grade point average of 2.5/4.0 or 3.5/5.0 in order to receive the second installment of $500.

Rho Gamma Gamma Marshals Back to School Parade By Spedy

T he brothers of Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter in conjunction with the Englewood Community to assist them with their back to school parade event. For over 15 years, Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter has been requested to marshal in the “Englewood Back to School Parade”. This year, on Saturday, August 26, 2006, the chapter assisted with the parade once more. The parade attracts several dignitaries like, State Senators & Congressmen, along with the local Aldermen. The parade also has quite a few youth groups that are involved with the Chicago Park District (Cheerleading, Football, and Dance Groups/Drill Teams).

T here is a saying that “you never know a man’s ability until you put him in charge of something”. That must be a phase that Brother Michael Johnson heard during his life. Brother Johnson, a neophyte, was appointed to the position of Chapter Social Action Chairman at the beginning of the Fiscal Year. The past few years, Brother Warren Cottrell was a stalwart for this position, which made it a real challenge for Brother Johnson. Mike “Jones”, as so many of the “seasoned” brothers affectionately and jokingly refer to him, hit the ground running making sure there was continuity. He has been getting very good participation all year and this event was no different. He addressed the youth from the main podium telling them how important is it to pursue an education and for them not to rule out any of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Brother Johnson is a Hampton University Alumni.

N ext up was the food. Food was served, important information was distributed, Bone Marrow Donor sign ups, and all of this was done for free. After the wonderful South Shore Drill Team ended their show, the food began to flow for the families. Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter had the spotlight again as they passed out 13 durable book bags filled with school supplies. These were given to children who were randomly selected, placed on a list, and announced before the crowd. The event commentator/emcee, Brother Lionel Pittman (Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter - Chicago), then requested that the brothers assist with food distribution, which they did. It was a marvelous day to assist the black community before school starts, and, hopefully, the brothers of Rho Gamma Gamma Chapter made an impression on the children to go to school and stay in school. Our Neophytes were hard at work as well and very enthused.

Chicago Ques Unite for Annual Tailgate Party!!!

By Bro Spedy

C hicago, IL-A member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. has quite a few choices of chapters if they were to relocate to Chicago or many of the surrounding suburbs. We have Mu Xi (Western Suburbs), Rho Tau (Waukegan – Far Northern Suburbs), Theta Kappa Kappa (Evanston – Northern Chicago Area), Chi Lambda Lambda (Southern Suburbs), Nu Pi (Joliet – Far Southern Suburbs), and the three in Chicago Proper – Iota, Rho Gamma Gamma, and Sigma Omega. As brothers, we may not always agree on things, but, we most certainly do agree to fellowship with one another.

S eptember 2, 2006, was such a time where the brothers from all chapters did fellowship together in the south park-ing lot of Soldier Field (Chicago, IL). There was a vision by Brothers Mandel Williams (International) and Darrell Ward (Rho Gamma Gamma). This vision was to put together a Tailgate that will go down in history as one of the “BEST”. In my opinion, they achieved that feat. These two brothers got together and rounded up the Neophytes from the various chapters and informed them they would be working the grill and fellowshipping with the brothers all day. Now, mind you, there was some resistance, but you had to be there (at the Tailgate) in order to see the massive enthusiasm that these men had while cooking food, making ice runs, and insuring that no one’s plate or cup was empty.

T he Chicago Football Classic had been on a hiatus for a few years, but it returned in 2004. In 2004, a make shift committee was put together (headed by Brother Williams – via an email list serve), and the brothers brought food and beverages. A “seasoned” brother (Ken – Sigma Omega) even donated his very own generator for the DJ, our very own Brother Timothy “DJ Undercover Que” Tyler (Mu Xi – current 10th District Director of Public Relations). In 2005, Brother Mandel or “Hustle Man”, as he has been referred to, strived to have this tailgate a bit more organized, and he incorporated the 2005 Neophytes. This was a great start for the foundation, which was built for the 2006 Tailgate for the Chicago Football Classic. This foundation is a stepping-stone for the neophytes to build bridges with brothers from all over, especially, the seasoned brothers.

T his year’s tailgate was phenomenal. We had brothers from all over Chicago, down state Illinois, Indiana, Texas,

and several other places. Fellowship was the operative word of the day. Music, Food, Beverages, and Omega Oil, were the nouns of the day. Dancing, Marching, Hopping, Singing, Chanting, Eating, and Drinking were the verbs of the day. The awesome “Chicago Ques” Flag flew high above the ground. If a person did not see the Chicago Ques area, they were not looking very hard. Other fraternities and sororities came to party with us, which is how it should be – harmonious. It will difficult to top this next year, but it won’t be impossible.
