THE FIFTHAN IDEALStanding out la bold relief against a blue
summer sky and. the dark green foliage on
the further river bank, the transportsteamer
poles laid back on a rakish angle, and her
big red funnel, made an imposing picture as
she lay at the Pinkenba wharf.
A big, roomy Teasel, with an excellent
name as a good sea boat, the members ofthe Fifth Queensland Contingent will be
bard to satisfy if they fall to make them
selves thoroughly comfortable on their
forthcoming voyage to the Cape. Ever
since October, 18?9, the Templemore has
been engaged in transport work, and thor
oughly fitted according to the ideas of the
home authorities, Bhe merely needed a
little general"
touching up" during her
stay at Sydney. Prior to leaving the Capefor Queensland she made three journeysfrom London to South Africa with. Englishtroops, and then proceeded to Cape Coast
Castle, whence she conveyed -1300 native
troops who had oeen engaged In the
Ashantl war right round the Cape to Zan
zibar, only one en route.
The Templemore, which has four decks,
has accommodation for «650 men and 458
horses. On the top, or hurricane, deck,
which extends the whole length of the ship,
400 horses can be carried, 160 on each side
knd'lM amidships, while on th« next, cr
wain, deck there are stalls for fifty more.
The stalls appear particularly strong, and
are well ventilated, while they are at the
same time protected from sun or rain.
On tie two lower decks, called respec
tively the" between decks" and the
"
or
lop" deck, are the troopers' quarters. On the nrstnamed there are twenty-twotables, each with accommodation for eigh
teen men to mess at, while on the latter
deck thsrj? are twelve tables, to seat six
teen men each. In both decks the ham
mocks for night are stowea overhead, be
tween hooks, from which they may be sus
pended for sleeping1 purposes. As the
vessel had only Just completed the loadingof 400 tons of coal, most of the portholeswere closed, *et although the morning was
warm, the atmosphere of the troop decks
was by no means oppressive, so that whvn
open, and with the natural breeze resultant
on the steamer's motion, our soldiers
should have splendidly-ventilated quarter*.A hdspltal, with about a score of comfortafiie' beds, is located on the
" between
decKs** Amidships, and the armoury and
the .' cells" on the orlop deck. Comfort
able cabins for' the officers, very little in
very
ferior, to those to be found on ocean liners,
as regards space, are situated on the hur
ricane and main decks, there being slxtennon the Prstnamed and nine on the last.
The Templemore has a refrigerating cham
ber, that will bold 300 tons of meat,, and is
•f course fitted throughout with electriclight. She Is under the command of Captain Murdoch, who has under him four offi
cers, six engineers, twenty-two sailors,
thirty-two engine hands, and no fewer than
twenty stewards to minister to the com
forts of •*
Private Thomas A." The Tem
plemore ts capable of steaming fourteen
knots an hour, which is slightly above the
speed of the average transport steamer.
A telegram has been received from- Cape*town, In reply to one sent by the Govern-,
ment to the General in Charge of Com
munications, stating that the transportTemplemore, with the Fifth QueenslandContingent, is to proceed direct to Capetownfor orders and Instructions as to the con
tingent's movements. Tne inquiry was
made by the Government in view of the
presence of plague at Capetown.
