My Calling and Yours

Nearly three years ago I gave up being a professor to become a pastor. It was a difficult transition, in particular because so much of my identity was bound up with being a teacher. Many of you know this part of my story. What you may not know is that, had the opportunity to become pastor at Queen Anne Lutheran not appeared, I would have possibly just stayed where I was.

I entered the call process several months before learning about Queen Anne Lutheran. Because I initially did not restrict myself to Washington, synods from elsewhere in the country contacted me. Nothing stood out. Then I learned about QALC. What made this congregation unique? What was different about it?

The answer was simple: QALC was the only congregation that explicitly sought an “academic theologian” to fill the position. When I went through the interview process, that desire was confirmed: the call committee recognized and affirmed my dual call to the congregation and the broader church as pastor and teacher. How could I not accept? God, through this congregation, through you, was calling me to be who I am.

The journey since has not always been easy. Focusing on the details of parish life for the first two years of my ministry made me wonder if the second part of my call was slipping away. But then, about a year ago, the second part of my call became audible.

I had recently become a fellow of the Westar Institute’s God Seminar, a theological descendent of the Jesus Seminar which had aroused the ire of biblical fundamentalists back in the 1980s and 90s for some of its claims concerning the historical Jesus. I attended Westar’s annual meeting in Santa Rosa where I participated in conversations between the fellows (the religion scholars) and lay people (associate members). At the end of the conference, the editor of the organization’s monthly journal approached me. He noticed that my questions were primarily attempts to clarify the perspective of other scholars for the sake of the broader audience. “We could really use that,” he said. “Would you be willing to write an article for our magazine, The Fourth R?”

If you have seen the latest edition of The Fourth R on the table in the narthex, you will know my response. The first article to be featured is mine. It’s called “What is Death of God Theology?” I wrote it because Death of God Theology is one of many influences on the God Seminar and it’s the subject of my studies. This way of talking about God caught the American public’s attention briefly in 1966 when TIME Magazine asked on one of its boldest covers and best-selling issues, “Is God Dead?” The theologians behind it, misunderstood from the beginning, were the focus of my article.

I invite you to read the article, but more than that, I invite you to take advantage of something unique to this congregation: you called a pastor and theologian to this ministry. We have the incredible opportunity now to walk together in our journey of faith and learning. In addition to my sermons, the forums I teach, and the Bible Studies I lead, look for chances in the weeks and months ahead to be part of special discussions on the writings I have coming out, including one in the fall on faith and artificial intelligence.

Proverbs 18:15 says that “the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.” That is essential to my call as a theologian, but it’s also your call, indeed, the call of every Christian (see 1 Pet 3:15-16). May we fulfill it together.

From the Cantor…

First of all: Thank you. I have been made to feel so welcome at Queen Anne Lutheran Church. From the first contact I had with the search committee, the congregation has been warm and inviting. Pastor Dan, Barb, Terry and John have made me feel right at home in the office, and the friendliness of the quilters (plus Wednesday morning coffee and goodies) can’t be underestimated! The choir has been enthusiastic, fun, and flexible from our first rehearsal together. Plus, David Lepse, the congregation’s interim cantor, has been helpful, knowledgeable and thoughtful during the transition.

I’m blessed to be starting out on what I believe will be a wonderful adventure in music and faith here at Queen Anne Lutheran. As with any job transition, it will take a while for me to settle in, and I ask for your patience as I continue to learn the landscape here. I’m truly enjoying “learning the ropes” as I get to know the wonderful staff, choir, and volunteers—and I’m very much looking forward to the possibilities for music ministry here at Queen Anne Lutheran, to God’s glory!

For my first foray into The Quill, here are a couple of items:

Mei Le Smith to attend Lutheran Summer Music My first week on staff I was delighted to learn that Mei Le Smith will be participating in the Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival (LSM) this summer at Valparaiso University in Indiana. LSM offers talented high school band, orchestra, choir, organ, and composition students from across the country the opportunity to deepen their faith and grow in musicianship through a remarkable four-week residential training and performance program. Mei Le (who is a violin student) has attended program the past two years and is now a high school senior, so this will be her last time participating. The Worship and Music Committee recommended that the congregation sponsor Mei Le through LSM’s matching grant program in honor of Queen Anne Lutheran’s former cantor, Arletta Anderson, who mentored Mei Le from the time she started taking violin lessons in elementary school. Queen Anne Lutheran will also be represented at LSM by Rev. Paul Hoffman, a member of the congregation, who will serve as chaplain for the program this summer (he previously served in 1992, 1995, and 2013). Learn more about the program at lsmacademy.org.

Are you a musician who would like to participate in worship? Let Kyle know! Do you play an instrument? Do you sing? Do you have a child who sings or plays an instrument? Interested in handbells? Please do feel welcome and encouraged to let me know! In the coming weeks and months I’ll be brainstorming ways to get connected with musicians within the congregation, but of course the easiest way for me to learn about you and your interests is for you to reach out. You’re welcome to catch me after a worship service or email me at [email protected].

See you in church,

Kyle Haugen, Cantor [email protected]

EGGHUNT on Easter Sunday

On Easter Sunday all kids, accompanied by at least one adult, are invited to an Egg Hunt with a Difference, starting right after 10:30 worship (families will be dismissed first). When the bell sounds, kids will find eggs—which are all filled with coins. Children can opt to keep the change, OR they can donate it to our Good Gifts jar, and then choose a chocolate Easter treat of their choice instead.

Why this way of doing an egg hunt? Everyone loves to hunt for eggs and everyone loves a candy treat. But, with coins donated to the jar (and donations from anyone else who cares to give) kids will purchase chicks for families across the world from ELCA’s Good Gifts catalog. Thinking of others and sharing feels good. And maybe it makes God, who is a big giver, smile. How can you help? Talk to Terry, or contact her at [email protected]

On Easter,

eggs will yield chicks!

We’ll plant and water along the flower beds on the main street. Want to join? This is a multigenerational event, so all adults as well as all families with kids are invited. We need to let them know by April 7. Please sign up on the clipboard in the narthex, or contact Terry.

Let’s show that we're a part of the community and that we are willing to step up and help. JOIN US! —Terry Anderson

April 28: World’s End? Addressing the Climate Crisis Scientists across the globe now say that we may have as little as eleven years before irreversible changes in our climate take effect, changes that will be devastating. What is the science predicting, and how might we respond from a faith perspective?

Join us this spring for a special four-part forum series—World's End? Addressing the Climate Crisis—beginning with a two-part presentation by Dr. Kristie Ebi, author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change latest report and professor of public

health from the University of Washington, followed by an introduction to “eco-theology” by Pastor Dan, and concluding with a forum and public lecture by Dr. Cynthia Moe-Lobeda, eco-theologian, from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. The forum series runs from Sunday, 4/28 to Sunday, 5/19, 9-10 AM in the Conference Room.

Dr. Kristie L. Ebi is a professor of global health

and environmental and

occupational health sciences

at the University of

Washington and she has been conducting research and practice on the health risks of climate variability and change for over twenty years. Her research focuses

on the impacts of and adaptation to climate variability and change. She focuses on understanding sources of vulnerability, estimating current and future health risks of climate change, and designing adaptation policies and measures to reduce the risks of climate change in multi-stressor environments. She has supported multiple countries in Central America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific in assessing their vulnerability in collaboration with WHO, UNDP, USAID, and others. Dr. Ebi’s scientific training includes an M.S. in toxicology and a Ph.D. and a Masters of Public Health in epidemiology. She has edited four books on aspects of climate change and has more than 180 publications.

Dr. Cynthia Moe-Lobeda is a professor of theological and social ethics

at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. She has lectured or consulted in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and many parts of North America in theological ethics addressing matters of

climate justice as related to race and class, economic globalization, moral agency and hope, public church, faith-based resistance to systemic injustice, and ethical implications of resurrection and incarnation. Her ethical approach weds Earth ethics to liberation theologies including eco-feminist theology. Dr. Moe-Lobeda was appointed theological consultant to the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, and has served as Director of the Washington, D.C. office of Augsburg College's Center for Global Education. Her book, Resisting Structural Evil: Love as Ecological-Economic Vocation (Fortress, 2013), won a Nautilus Award for social justice. She is author or co-author of six volumes and numerous articles and chapters..

QALC Women’s News:

Needed: Socks for one-year-olds (Baby Layettes) 60 dark-colored handkerchiefs/soft bandanas (Core Tanzania Book bags) Ideas for raising $1,000 for Core Tanzania (Sallie Wilson) From Gather magazine, “Lean on God by leaning on people. We all know we’re supposed to trust God above all things. But in the face of betrayal, faith is shaken when you are let down by another; you also may feel like you have been let down by God. You may feel that way, but you haven’t been let down by God. God doesn’t ever let you down. People do. That’s easy to say but harder to believe.” If you are having a hard time finding God, at least find your people. Come join QALCW in a Bible Study, a sewing group, QALC Book Group, or help raise money for LWR!

This is it! This is the month! No, not Easter—the Blessing of the Quilts, the kits, the quilt-makers, the kit-makers, those who box, truck loaders and traffic directors, AND those who contribute financially to make it all happen! Set your calendars for April 28 following the 10:30 service. Everyone is invited to help box the quilts, weigh the boxes, etc., and everyone is invited to contribute to the costs of shipping the quilts and kits. It costs QALCW about $1,500 each year to send the quilts and kits we complete.

From Sonja Hoffman, President Oregon Synodical Women of the ELCA Greetings Sisters in Christ:

“’YOUR FAITH JOURNEY!’ This is our theme for the Region I Gathering that will be held June 21-23, 2019 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in Hillsboro, OR. The Oregon SWO Board and I are excited to invite you and the other Christian women in your life to join us in discovering, renewing and deepening “Your Faith Journey.” Our presenter will be Sharon Garlough Brown. Sharon is the author of the Sensible Shoes four book series. The books follow four characters as they work to discover God’s plan for them and develop relationships with each other.” Look for more information and registration forms in the Narthex!

You (the Women of QALC) approved allocating $3,000.00 for Core Tanzania School this year. The proposal also included raising $1,000 per year for the next 3 years (2020, 2021, and 2022) in support of the school. Sallie Wilson is in charge of this project. Part of the support for the school will be making book bags for the students. One of the requests was for two dark-colored handkerchiefs per book bag. We need 60. The handkerchiefs could be bandanas. Would anyone like to work on this?

April Book Group — Hillbilly Elegy

Book Group meets in the narthex on the last Monday of each month. We want to make it clear that all are welcome at our meetings, men and women, old or young. Everyone is invited! Anyone who reads or wants to listen to the discussion is welcome, and it’s okay if you didn’t have time to read one month or can’t always attend! This month we will meet on Monday, April 29 at 7 PM in the church narthex to discuss Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance. Discussion will be led by Barbara Koziol.

Vance describes his upbringing and family background in a family from a small town in Kentucky. He writes about a family history of poverty and low-paying, physical jobs that have since disappeared or worsened in their guarantees, and compares this life with his perspective after leaving that area and life. Vance was raised in Middletown, Ohio, though his ancestors were from Breathitt County, Kentucky. He examines such Appalachian values as loyalty and love of country and social issues including violence, poverty and abuse.

Reading ahead: May’s selection is Summer Hours at the Robbers Library by Susan Halfern. The entire year’s picks can be found on the narthex bulletin board and online on the church website; from the home page, go to CONNECT/QALC BOOK GROUP.

Bishop's Message

By the Rev. Kirby Unti, Bishop, NWWA Synod From the March 2019 edition of The Spirit

Lent: A Time to Take Seriously How God Seeks in Us a Change of Heart and Mind Return to the Lord our God, for God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

I love the season of Lent, because Lent both acknowledges my utter humanity and creates a holy space for grace. This is vital for me because sometimes my own fear clouds my vision of God’s expansive love.

As I was contemplating this, I remembered an image I used to doodle on my notes whenever I was in class or attending a meeting. I would draw two parallel and offset squares and then join them together, so they looked like 3D box whose sides, top and bottom are transparent. Then I would stare at the 3D image only to discover that it would completely change its image. Typically, I first see the box as if I am looking at it straight on. Then after blinking my eyes several time the box would flip, and I would see it as if looking through its top. The same box but when seen with new perspective it completely changes.

It is rather embarrassing to say now but I did not immediately embrace the idea of women as pastors. Fifty years ago, as an 18-year-old male, I couldn’t imagine a pastor being a woman. I didn’t have the language or knowledge to know that my perceptions—my own maleness—was being threatened. I was being dislodged from my comfortable, and soon to be stale, understanding of the church. Truthfully, it would be a few years before I experienced a shift in thinking. As I attended seminary with women candidates and became friends with women pastors, my fear began to give way to my experience of discovering the added gift, perspective, heart and wisdom that ordained women were blessing the church with. I look back with regret at how narrow my understanding was of what it means to be the body of Christ where every part is valued and essential to vitality.

This journey challenged me to overcome my fear and ignorance. Through the years I have added to this experience of learning to see God’s love more fully in a number of ways:

• welcoming siblings in the LGBTQIA community into the church, into ordination and marriage.

• discovering the rich diversity that comes from honoring the call of Deacons to ordination and their rightful place of service in the church.

• coming understand the Black Lives Matter movement and its challenge to white male privilege.

• recognizing more fully the history of the destruction of the land and lives of our Native American people.

• coming to see how my consumer-formed mindset leads to the destruction of the earth.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, nor do I want to imply that I have completely moved from fear and resistance; there are days when it’s one step forward and two back.

My life has been a life-long journey of learning, changing and gaining new perspective. I thank God that God has been patient with me, gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. This Lenten season I invite you to lean into God's gracious Holy Space where a change of heart gains courage.
