President’s Message.

December is the time of year when we look back on the year;

and look forward to the coming year. This year we are saying

“Thank you“ to Donna K, Bev G, Kathleen P, Brenda H and Tam-

my L. Donna and Bev have done a great job managing the li-

brary for four years. Kathleen and Brenda stepped into social

when no one else would and provided tea and coffee for all of

us. Tammy has been part of a team that organized our mem-

bership committee and a source of enthusiasm and cheer. Sha-

ron P is retiring from treasurer but remaining as publicity and

Luisa G is leaving program but remaining to help with work-

shops. We also had a very successful quilt show and owe a big

“Thank you“ to the lead organizers; Beth W, Jackie G and Deb-

bie A. All your hard work and effort was worth it. And the

“Thank you“ includes everyone who worked on the committees

relating to the relating to the quilt show.

We have new executive members to welcome. Sharon A is join-

ing membership, Marion P is taking program, Diana L is assum-

ing library and Bianca B is helping as treasurer. Debbie A has

volunteered to make mug bags for the new membership pack-

ages. We have new programs and workshops, new members to

welcome and a new year of friendship to look forward to.

These are the people, along with the reminder of the executive,

who make this guild worth coming to. They inspire and help all

of us to enjoy the addiction called quilting.

September Meeting Show and Tell

Would you like to be a “Guild Mum”?

In an effort to make visitors and potential new Members feel more welcome we

are implementing a “Guild Mums” program. Guild Moms will welcome visitors

and new members, show them where to sit, explain how the meeting usually runs, how the library works, the

types of programs that are held throughout the year – generally answer any question, as required.

Guild Moms will be identified by wearing a “Guild Mum” nametag. The number of months that you would volun-

teer to be a “Guild Mum” would be your decision, ranging from one month to a complete year. There will be five

“Guild Mum” name tags, so hopefully there will be more than one “Guild Mum” at each meeting – the more the

merrier!

Guild Mum volunteers will have their names on a list maintained by the Membership Committee. The specific

“Guild Mum” will keep the name tag for the agreed upon time, and then the name tag would be returned to the

Membership Committee, so the next “Guild Mum” can wear the name tag.

If you are interested in volunteering as a “Guild Mum”, for any length of time, please see the Membership Com-

mittee when you sign in for the monthly meeting. Thanks for volunteering!

September Retreat

Thank you Beth

Here’s a big shout out to Beth,

our retiring President. Beth has

steered the guild with fun and

commitment. Whether giving a workshop, in-

spiring us with her designs, creating a friend-

ship quilt to celebrate our 25th anniversary or

looking after a thousand tiny details, she has

donated her time and talents unselfishly for

our benefit. Thank you Beth. We appreciate all

you have done for the guild!

What do you get when you combine 23 talent-

ed women, lots of delicious home cooking,

wonderful, rustic surroundings and a substan-

tial supply of wine? A really terrific quilt retreat

weekend!

Many thanks go out to Nancy Switzer and the

friendly folks at Bridgewater Retreat in Tweed

for a great weekend. The weather was wonder-

ful, the accommodations were comfortable, the

food was yummy and plentiful, and the sewing

machines were humming from early morning to

midnight! This was my first Retreat experience,

and I have to say that I'll be going back next

year, and the year after that. It was really great

to get to know those wonderful ladies whom I

see from month to month at the guild

meetings. The talent in this group is awesome

and inspirational.

If you haven't yet gone on the September Re-

treat, you owe it to yourself to sign up for next

year - talk to Nancy and get your name on the

list. Many of this year's participants are going

next year, but there's room for several more!

Slice and Swap Stars Workshop - Bravely Led by Beth C. The workshop was very enjoyable and I completed four blocks (two unsuccessfully). I think that my problems may be due to trying to create an assembly-line process. My unsuccessful blocks and some unsuccessful blocks from other (not to be named) partic-ipants will become a cat pillow. So, I will not add to the universe any orphaned blocks. The reason could also be, somehow, because my dear sister Beth said I was a student from Hell. I did further work on the Slice and Swap blocks at the Retreat with similar success. As a result, I have decided not to cut anything after 7:00 PM at Retreat.

One Million Pillowcase Challenge

American Patchwork and Quilting has challenged groups to make pillowcases for charitable organiza-tions. The list below contains possible charities in our community:

As of November 17th, almost 600,000 pillowcases have been donated. The Quinte Quilters' Guild is here-by challenged to make at least one pillowcase per member. Make a bold statement with a three- or four-color scheme. A colour wheel triad is made of three col-ors equally spaced on the color wheel. The three primary colors, red, yellow and blue, make up a very popular triadic harmony.

Every triadic harmony combines warm and cool colors. The quantities used of each will have an important effect on your quilt. In all triadic harmonies, lighter and brighter versions of each color will produce lively contrast in your quilt. The bright pure values of the three colors create a very energetic result. Darker values with low intensities will produce a more sophisticated look.

Four colors equally spaced around the color wheel combine to make a tetrad. There are only three possible combinations: Red, green, blue-violet and yellow-orange. Violet, yellow, blue-green and red-orange. Blue, orange, red-violet and yellow-green. Because a tetrad is actually two complementary pairs, the colors create a balance in temperature and, when used in various values and intensities, result in a lively yet pleasing harmony.

Many multicolored fabrics are based on a tetrad color combination. They are often used as the main fabric for a quilt because of their many color choices. Many colours make beautiful quilts.

Polychromatic quilts, as the name implies, contain many colors. Scrap quilts and contemporary art quilts very often use polychromatic harmony. These quilts more than any others must use value, in-tensity, symbolism and temperature successfully to achieve the desired results. Because green is so prevalent in nature it is said to work well with almost any other color. It is often used in a multicolor quilt to provide contrast or to neutralize more powerful colors.

Choose a multicolored print and select fabrics to coordinate with its various colors. After coordinat-ing fabrics with that multicolored print, eliminate the print altogether. You can substitute tints, shades or tones for some of the coordinating fabrics. Look at the salvage edge of the print fabric chosen and you will find dots of colour dyes that are found in the print. Any of these colours will suitable to use.

Remember to vary textures in your fabric choices -- use solids, tone-on-tones, and small, medium and large prints to create motion and interest in your work. And, until you become more confident in your use of color, make a trial block before cutting all the pieces for an entire quilt.

Finally, the most important factor in selecting great colors for your quilts is experience. As they say, "Practice makes perfect." Though we may never achieve perfection in our quilts, with practice we will

certainly gain insight into the combination of colors that we love in our quilts.
