The RACV Energy Breakthrough welcomes Team Pecos USA. Team Pecos comes from the Pecos Independent District School in New Mexico, USA. A special welcome to our first international competitors. We would like to thank those that have supported the Team Pecos visit, including:

* Weeroona College* Duke of Edinburgh Award, Victoria* Rays Outdoors

While in our charming town, why not take time to wander around the main streets, you will be surprised by the number of historic buildings, cafes', bakeries and boutiques. The Maryborough Railway Station is famous for it's architecture and grandness. USA novelist, Mark Twain, when visiting Maryborough, remarked “that it was a station with a town attached”. If only he could see it now - it's been completely refurnished and renovated and there is now a Tapas Cocktail Bar, Regional Wine Centre, antique emporium and café. Why not plan another visit to our region to coincide with another major tourist event, the 148th Highland Games which is held at Princes Park on 1 January 2009. In fact, any time is a good time to visit. There are markets every month in nearby towns and the region boasts an excellent range of accommodation, from farm stays and motels to bed and breakfast and self contained cottages. If you would like more information on events, markets or accommodation in Central Goldfields, contact our office and we will happily post details out to you.

Event Categories

is an exciting program designed to provide opportunities for students,

teachers, parents and local industry to work together throughout the year to

design and construct a vehicle, a machine or innovation in technology that

will represent an energy breakthrough.

The program encourages both male and female participants to examine

and use the latest technology while considering its impact

on the environment and the way people live locally and globally.

It requires a team effort and an across-the-curriculum approach. These

groups then bring their vehicles and machines to Maryborough, Victoria in

November, for a huge celebration in which they can demonstrate and trial

them in action.

Department of Education and Early Childhood Development The Department of Education

and Early Childhood Development is pleased to be

supporting the 2008 RACV

Energy Breakthrough, which

offers students real-life

challenges in science, technology and environmental

education.The Department places an

emphasis on fostering partnerships-with parents and

families, and with local

communities and businesses.

This event is a great way to bring

together schools and the

community. It provides exciting

opportunities for students,

teachers, parents, local industry

and other groups to work

together.The RACV Energy Breakthrough,

which raises awareness about

global warming and sustainable

alternatives, is one of the many

projects that the Department

supports as part of the Victorian

Government's ongoing

commitment to energy

conservation.

COUNTRY EDUCATION PROJECTThe Country Education Project has been a key partner in the RACV Energy Breakthrough since its inception.

The concept of the energy breakthrough was developed by CEP Inc in partnership with a number of rural schools in 1991. The focus of the initaitive was to involve young people in the development of hands-on program that focused on science, maths, environment and technology and was accessible and sustainable for rural schools.CEP Inc has continued to promote the 'breakthrough' as a valuable, student centred and real life approach to supporting young peoples involvement in these vital learning areas.

Through the development of partnership with RACV, Goldfields Shire, and many other organisations, it has ensured the event continues to be a central event within the education calendar of Victoria.CEP Inc has also worked with clusters of schools, universities and communities in developing a range of educational resources, workshops and professional development activities to further enhance the development of learning opportunities that are generated through the energy breakthrough.

Promoting the Uptake of Low Emission Vehicles in AustraliaThis is a partnership between RACV, EPA Victoria and Future Climate Australia to: • Reduce the greenhouse impact of transport by promoting the purchase of Low Emission Vehicles (LEVs) • Provide credible guidance for vehicle buyers in response to the recurring question “What car do I buy?” • Promote collaboration between those involved in the issue of sustainable transportation. • Raise awareness of emerging technologies and fuels and their potential to help meet the transport greenhouse challenge • Future Climate Australia, a not-for-profit organisation, manages the program.

Website www.Greenwheels.com.au Provides guidance to new car buyers on how to select a low (CO2) emission vehicle. It features a Buyer's Guide that displays vehicles in the top 25% for greenhouse emissions in each class, calculated from the range of rated greenhouse emissions from best to worst in that class. It allows consumers to select vehicles by class, and ranks them in order of their CO2 rating.LEV Green TickVehicles in each class whose emissions ratings come within 25% of the best performer in that class are illustrated with an 'LEV green tick', as examples of the very best available on the Australian market.Vehicle Comparison CalculatorThe website features an interactive tool http://www.greenwheels.com.au/buyersguide/fleet that allows a comparison of fuel and CO2 emissions between an existing vehicle and any low emission one. This compares not only the greenhouse ratings of the two vehicles, but allows the factoring in of variations in 'real' performance, transferring the percentage variation from rated CO2 emissions in the original vehicle to the vehicle under consideration. With this tool you can calculate not only the potential saving in greenhouse emissions, but also how much could be saved in fuel costs by changing vehicles.Forum & Drive DayManaged by Murcotts Driving Excellence, the event was held at Sandown Park International Raceway on 14th April 2008, when eighty fleet managers were able to test-drive 31 low emission vehicles from 12 manufacturers. An interactive Roundtable Q&A session allowed a lively exchange on matters of concern as we head into a low carbon future.Greenwheels AwardThis hybrid vehicle design competition has been developed for the 2008 RACV Energy Breakthrough event.
