We are very pleased to present this report covering the period from July 1, 2005through December 31, 2006. This eighteen-month time span reflects the decision of the Ragdale Board of Trustees to shift the fiscal year to coincide withthe calendar year, more accurately reflecting our fundraising patterns andstreamlining our record keeping.

The eighteen months covered here represent a period of consolidation and new growth for the Foundation. More than 500 donors helped us successfullyconclude the Campaign for Ragdale, raising more than $5 million. Shaw’sBarnhouse was renovated, a new accessible studio was added, phases I and II ofthe Landscape Master plan were completed and the endowment grew from less than $100,000 to $2.5 million.

As a result of the campaign, many major projects were accomplished and it wastime, once again, to make a new plan for Ragdale’s future. In 2005 consultantsfrom the Executive Service Corps of Chicago were enlisted to guide the Board ofTrustees and staff to map out a Strategic Plan for the next five years. Committees,including Development and Finance, Artists-in-Residence, Property andLandscape, Communications and Programs and Board Development developedgoals and specific objectives to bring all areas of our work forward. The StrategicPlan, adopted by the Board of Trustees in November 2005 culminated in thereaffirmation of Ragdale’s mission.

The mission of the Ragdale Foundation is to support writers and artists in a retreat setting and to make the arts more accessible to the public. This is accomplished throughthree program areas:

Additionally a new vision statement was articulated:

In the year 2010, Ragdale will be widely recognized as the Midwest’s foremost artists community, playing a leading role in the creation of important new work.

This statement has guided our work over the past eighteen months.

We have increased the quality and diversity of our residents through an active fellowship program. Through five endowed fellowships and a growing number ofannually-funded fellowships Ragdale has been able to invite best-selling authors,nationally competitive composers and outstanding writers and visual artists tolive and work at Ragdale. Funding from the Joyce Foundation and the NationalEndowment for the Arts have helped us establish a network of nominators toreach out to talented candidates in Chicago and the Midwest’s underserved communities providing fellowships and stipends allowing many people to cometo Ragdale for the first time. Partnerships with Chicago organizations such asColumbia College Center for Book and Paper Arts, the School of the Art Instituteof Chicago and the Cliffdwellers Club have extended our search for talentedChicago artists and writers.

In 2006 the Ragdale Foundation celebrated its 30th anniversary with a highlysuccessful exhibition of visual art, accompanied by a broad range of public pro-grams at the Chicago Cultural Center. Thousands of Chicagoans and visitorsfrom around the country and the world saw the wonderfully eclectic works of art.Best-selling alumni authors Audrey Niffenegger and Alex Kotlowitz gave a spe-cial program speaking about the positive influence Ragdale has had on theircareers. Three months of exposure at this major venue across from MillenniumPark was a great step forward to accomplishing our vision of being “widely recognized as the Midwest’s foremost artists community!”


Ragdale’s ability to achieve its mission and vision depends on a strong and stablefundraising effort. The Development Committee, the Friends of Ragdale andthe staff, have provided this stable base and continue to grow the Annual Fund.Both the 2005 Stub year and FY2006 ended very strongly. FY06 Annual Fundcontributions (grants and general public) were up 40% over the same period inFY05 (excluding Stub figures)—showing significant growth at the end of our capital campaign.

This period was one of generational change for Ragdale. In 2005 Director ofPrograms and Communications Sylvia Clare Brown retired after 17 years of faithful service to Ragdale and Admissions Director Melissa Mosher movedaway. In 2006 Meredith Eastburn and Regin Igloria joined the staff bringingtheir perspective as working artists and their valuable experience at Chicago arts organizations to the staff mix.

In October 2006, Ragdale’s founder, the effective and eloquent Alice Hayespassed away following a serious car accident. Alice, who had loved Ragdale for allof her 84 years, left us to carry out her legacy of a sanctuary where artists andwriters could work in a supportive community. While we miss her frequent visitsto Lake Forest, we see her hand in every aspect of Ragdale and trust she would be pleased to see it thriving.
