Tax Levy One of the tasks before the Village Board every year is to decide if the Village’s tax levy on real estate should be raised. As it has done for several years now, the Village Board decided to increase the tax levy by only 5%. While 5% percent sounds like a lot, when broken down it equates to an increase of approximately $3.73/year per $100,000 of property valuation for all the properties located within the Village or approximately $0.31/month per $100,000 of property valuation. (See chart below depicting the breakdown of the 2018 real estate tax bill. The Village is the green portion of the pie.) The taxes are levied to cover the annual audit and insurance costs. Currently, the taxes that are levied do not cover those costs completely, and the expenses are subsidized by the tipping fees from the landfill. If there are any questions on the Village’s tax levy, please contact Fi- nance Trustee William Luchsinger at (815) 262-8696.

President’s NoteWith the end of the year upon us, the streets projects have wrapped up for the season, public works departments are working on winter main-tenance projects, the new parks supervisor is settling in, and Village Hall is working on wrapping up for the year.

Tax LevyOne of the tasks before the Village Board every year is to decide if the Village’s tax levy on real estate should be raised. The Village is the green portion of the pie.)

The taxes are levied to cover the annual audit and insurance costs. Currently, the taxes that are levied do not cover those costs completely, and the expenses are subsidized by the tipping fees from the landfill. If there are any questions on the Village’s tax levy, please contact Fi-nance Trustee William Luchsinger at (815) 262-8696.

  • Water and Sewer RateOver the last several years the Village Board has discussed the need for an increase in the water and sewer rate to reduce the amount the Village is subsidizing and to plan for capital improvement expenditures. After months of public meetings, the Village Board has passed the following rate increase: Residential sewer and water rates will increase by $0.25 each on January 1st of each year and commercial sewer and water rates will increase by $1.00 on January 1st of each year. This means on January 1, 2020, residential water rates will go from $3.50 per 1,000 gallons to $3.75 per 1,000 gallons, residential sewer rates will go from $3.50 per 1,000 gallons to $3.75 per 1,000 gallons, commercial water rates will go from $4.50 per 1,000 gallons to $5.50 per 1,000 gallons, and commercial sewer rates will go from $4.50 per 1,000 gallons to $5.50 per 1,000 gallons. This rate increase will require the Village to continue to subsidize the water and sewer systems with tipping fees from the landfill, but it is a step in the right direction to-ward a self-sustaining system one day. I would encour-age anyone with questions on the new rates, to reach out to any of the Trustees or myself. Our contact information can be found on the front page of this newsletter.

2020 CensusAn invitation to complete the 2020 Census online will be mailed to each home within the next couple of months. It is important that every person, in every household, be counted in the Census as the census determines how billions of dollars are allocated every year, including state tax dollars. When you receive your invitation from the U.S. Census Bureau, complete the simply questionnaire online, by phone, or by mail. For more information, visit 2020census.gov.

As always, please reach out to the Village Board with any questions or concerns. I hope that everyone has a safe winter season!

Meet the New Parks Supervisor: Nathan Hill

Hello, I am excited to join the Village of Davis Junction as your new Parks Supervisor.

Parks are a great community asset and huge part of this Village’s identity. I look forward to working with John Talbot and the other Village Trustees, staff, partners, and park users to provide safe and well-maintained spaces for recreation and enjoyment. After all, these are your parks, and from what I can see so far in my short time here they are a great community gathering place full of opportunity and fun.

Quite some time ago, I graduated from Stillman Valley High and started my career in maintenance mowing for Meridian School District during summers while attending college at SIUC. Most recently, I spent 10 years working for the Rockford Park District maintaining neighborhood parks, ball diamonds, landscaping, natural areas, and trees.

Looking ahead to 2020, I see great things planned for your parks and I am here to help make them happen.

The Public Works Department has already had a busy winter season with the first snowfall of the year that happened about a month ago.

We would like to remind our residents that it is against Village Ordinances to deposit snow into the streets. We do our best to keep the streets clean and safe for our residents, and we appreciate your assistance in doing so. If you have any questions about ordinances, the list of ordinances can be found on our website at www.davisjunction.com.

As the holidays approach, and activities increase, we offer online bill pay and auto pay for our residents to pay their utility bills without leaving the comfort of their homes. Online bill pay and the auto pay form are both available on our website as well (www.davisjunction.com).

We hope you have a happy and safe holiday season.

    Public Works...

As we enter into the Holiday Season for 2019, we want to wish everyone a safe and happy Holiday. We have been blessed this year with having a full year of wonderful programs and accomplishments at the Museum. This could not have been achieved without the help of so many volunteers. Our members are devoted, delightful folks. It is with great passion that we try to offer a place to learn and socialize with each other and surrounding communities. We look forward to building new ways to involve all ages. Our facility can host your program, new ideas, or displays which teaches visitors. Once again, we would like to sincerely thank the Village of Davis Junction, Scott Township, and all Volunteers for all of your support. God Bless & Merry Christmas!

The museum will be closed this January. If you wish to contact us, please email us at [email protected] or call Kim Smeja at 815-994-0803.
