Cattlemen: We want to welcome you to our annual production sale. This is our 31st auction, with over 49 years of raising Charolais and 12 years of raising Red Angus seedstock. We thank you for your past support and appreciate those of you who are new. Our hope is that you will benefit from our program, as many have in the past. Here at the Ranch we feel we need to differentiate between genetic change and genetic progress. Every genetic decision we make-leads to this auction. Not all change is progress. We feel our genetics have progressed and not necessarily changed. We have reached a higher point of performance and predictability, be it in the cow herd with fertility and calving ease or in the hung carcass as harvested animals. Breed complimentary and heterosis, results of cross-breeding, have never been more important to commercial bull buyers. It makes females last longer and calves weigh more. An extra $100-200/cow profit is simply impossible to ignore. Added profit is vital for every operations success. Crossbreeding also helps reach those premiums awarded on a carcass. Today over 50% of the feedlot cattle harvested are done on a grid marketing formula. TSI: Fairly new to the AICA is the Terminal Sire Index, or TSI, which represents a dollar index by combining several EPDs to from a single value on which to base selction decisions. For example when comparing Lot 1’s TSI of 220 and Lot 2’s 231, you could expect the progeny of Lot 2 to average $11 more net return than Lot 1.

Herdbuilder: According to the ARAA “Producers selecting bulls to develop profitable replacement females and maximize the value of non-replacement marketed progeny should incorporate the HerdBuilder Index into their selection decisions. Given that replacement heifers are retained, significant influence is placed on the obvious maternal ERTs of Stayability, Heifer Pregnancy and Calving Ease. Additionally, with all remaining progeny sold on a quality-based carcass grid, Marbling, Yield Grade and growth EPDs also impact the HerdBuilder Index.”

Gridmaster: According to the ARAA, “The GridMaster Index can be used if your operation’s primary goal is maximizing profitability of feeders in the feedyard and on the rail. Marbling, Yield Grade, and growth EPDs are the traits of primary importance in the GridMaster Index.”

MPPA: According to the ARAA, the Most Probable Producing Ability is “An estimate of a cow’s future productivity for a trait (such as progeny weaning weight ratio” based on her past productivity. For example, a cow’s MPPA for weaning ratio is calculated from the cow’s average progeny weaning ratio, the number of her progeny with weaning records, and the repeatability of weaning weight.”

Ranchers using these Red Angus X Charolais hybrids on black cows report calf color will be black, red or rusty. These bulls are out of some of the best registeredRed Angus cows in our herd. Therefore, all hybrid bulls are ½ Red Angus and ½ Charloais, except Lots 67 & 69. These bulls are very growthy and extremely sound.

Remember that these bulls represent heterosis at its maximum. No cost for heterosis – it is free! We need more heterosis in the beef industry. Not going tocomment in detail on each of these bulls, just look at the data.

These bulls are all out of very good Charolais cows and HXC Allegiance 5052 Red Angus bull. HXC Allegiance is the sire of most of the Red Angus bulls in this year’s sale. We fully stand behind these three bulls as some of the best and most predictable hybrids we have raised. Lot 70 had the highest weaning weight of this group but got sick on grass. We checked his lungs twice (by veterinarian) this winter. He appears to have recovered completely. This reflects in his current weight.
