About AnmahAnmah was a warrior from Series 7 Week 2. He was joint at the bottom of the leaderboard with Vansha for a while, but then Ardhu slipped down and left the competition. He then went ahead of Vansha, and Vansha went out. Anmah was then at the top of leaderboard and seemed to be going really strongly when he missed out on the portal by a fraction of a second! Anmah’s constant change in luck made me think that he would be a good one for Warrior Feature. So here are his details:

CHALLENGE feature – DEMON SQUARE

Challenge Feature this month is supplied by Jake Collins. Enjoy his recount of one of his favourite challenges, the test of wisdom – Demon Square from Series 2-7. Enjoy!

Demon Square takes place in one of Castle Toward’s numerous ruined, grassy courtyards. Two paths of large wooden squares are set out, stretching towards the golden-leafed Wisdom Tree that stands at the far end of the courtyard. The Wisdom Tree grows golden treasure rings and possesses a fount of general knowledge,

Page 6: THE RAVEN’S EYE - Webs 3.doc  · Web viewI interviewed Hanso (who of course was the runner-up of Series 7!) exclusively for The Raven’s Eye with many of the questions that you

which it delights in turning into rhyming riddles, many of which do not really rhyme at all. The answer to these riddles is always either true or false. The warriors begin on a large square between the two paths; once the Wisdom Tree has asked its first question, they must choose whether to step onto the black path, for false, or the white path, for true. Inexplicably and pointlessly, the black path was changed to the red path for series 7. Once the Wisdom Tree has revealed its answer, the warriors who have answered correctly step onto the next square, while those who were incorrect remain where they are. Now, this is where things really start to get sticky – each path is haunted by a demon, which takes one step forward after each question. If a demon catches up with a warrior, they are taken and their game is over. The demons begin two squares behind the warriors. In practical terms, this means that the warriors can each get one question wrong and still win the challenge. However, answering two questions incorrectly means certain capture by one of the demons, which means that a life must be lost. A measure of luck is always useful in this challenge, as there is an even chance of simply guessing the correct answer each time. However, sound general knowledge really is the key to success here. My one objection to Demon Square, however, is that reaching the end of the path earns each warrior one treasure ring, regardless of whether they have answered all the questions correctly or got one wrong. Surely it would be more fitting to reward those warriors with a perfect score with two treasure rings, while those who have made a mistake receive only one. Makers of Raven, take note! This challenge has featured in every single week of Raven since the start of Series 2, and this is something that I, at least, have been pleased about. Demon Square typically takes place on a Wednesday, as it is an individual challenge and therefore does not require an even number of warriors, either to face off against each other or work in teams of three. Despite the fact that each warrior is working purely for themselves, sometimes the slightly more ignorant warriors may decide to follow those who they perceive to possess more general knowledge. Of course we can never really tell whether or not anyone is actually doing this, despite any suspicions we may have, and whether or not anyone wants to confess to following anyone else is entirely up to the conscience of the individual warrior. Jakesh once said, "I think that people were following me because I've got a good sharp mind.” On balance, I think this is my favourite Raven challenge overall. A well-rounded warrior should be mentally as well as physically strong, and Demon Square is a very important test of the warriors’ wisdom and knowledge. I find the atmosphere of the demons

Page 7: THE RAVEN’S EYE - Webs 3.doc  · Web viewI interviewed Hanso (who of course was the runner-up of Series 7!) exclusively for The Raven’s Eye with many of the questions that you

creeping up behind the warriors to be pleasingly tense, and Gareth Thomas as the voice of the Wisdom Tree injects just the right amount of scholarly cheekiness into the role. Indeed, voicing a talking tree that does little more than ask true or false questions could be a very challenging role for an actor to get anything out of, but the Wisdom Tree has a lot of personality, which helps to make the challenge that significant bit more interesting.

Thanks to Jake for the long and detailed description of the challenge! Next week he will review another of his favourite challenges – Thrall Demons. Look out for that!

POETRY CORNER – DAALAPoetry Corner this month is also written by Jake Collins. Here it is:

Small of stature, fair of hair,Daala had much pluck to spare.

For though she made a shaky start,She showed she had a lion's heart.

In darkened forest, what a bind,The standard proved too hard to find.

The Eyeless Demons' deadly sticksGot poor Daala in a fix.

Although she pleased the grumpy troll,The day had taken quite a toll.

The Leap of Faith was far too high,So Daala had to wave goodbye

To one more life, and then, oh dear! The flour-throwing game was here.

She didn't even get to throw,But one more life was soon to go!

In the loch she got quite wet,But no, she's not defeated yet!

She crossed the Stepping Stones, hooray! But still she lagged at close of play.I really couldn't have been sorrier

When Daala failed the Way of the Warrior.

Picture competition RESULTSI think it’s quite obvious who was won the competition from the front page, but let’s see who entered the competition.I was extremely pleased with the response – 7 entries are absolutely fantastic! There was lots of great work, including drawings by hand, drawings by computer and editing by computer! It’s great to have a

Alaunus – chapter 3 – DEMON ATTACK

We now return to Alaunus, the fable from Raven’s homeland. Here is an overview for you lot that haven’t been following the story so far:

Chapter 1 – The Quiet DaysRaven dares Erina to climb Mount Zoat with him. They come to a cave and find a blue spirit called Haryad.“My name is Haryad, what are you doing visiting me?”

Chapter 2 – Haryad’s CaveHaryad tells them that they have smudged his ‘wall drawings’. Erina asks if they can repay him in anyway. He says that there is:“ There is a leaf in the fortress that will return me to my former human self. Return the leaf to me and I will be human once more!”He explains that he got into a row with demons, and they turned him into a spirit. As they leave, Raven is keen to investigate the cave drawings, whereas Erina is keen to get the leaf as soon as possible. As they walk back home, however, they come across demons…‘They tripped backwards as the demon approached, getting closer, closer…’

We now continue the story with Chapter 3 – Demon Attack:

Page 12: THE RAVEN’S EYE - Webs 3.doc  · Web viewI interviewed Hanso (who of course was the runner-up of Series 7!) exclusively for The Raven’s Eye with many of the questions that you

“I will not leave you, Raven!” Erina insisted. Despite Raven’s please to tell her to run, Erina remained standing against the tree, looking terrified and not particularly doing anything to help, but just standing there.Raven was powerless to stop the demon. Erina screamed as she noticed two demons appear beyond the first one – they were increasing in number – and gaining on Raven and Erina. The demons approached, and more and more came to threaten the two friends. One appeared right behind Erina, making her climb up the tree in fright. Raven was left in the middle of a circle of demons, all looking angry. Erina now wanted to do something to help, but was now clutching onto the branch of a demon-guarded tree, so she wasn’t able to do anything.“Jump out the tree, Erina and run in the other direction!” Raven called.“I will not desert you Raven!”“Jump out and get Cyrus!” Raven pleaded desperately as the demons closed in on him, “if you want to save me, go and get him!”Erina refused to leave Raven with the demons, so she stayed sat there in the tree. She was too petrified to move a muscle. Something in her brain told her that leaving Raven would be handing him over to the demons. Erina sat in the branch and noticed that the branch that she was sitting on was sagging in her weight – it was about to fall! Erina looked petrified – she was about to join Raven, feeling the cold breath of the demons on their necks. The branch couldn’t take any more pressure, it snapped clean into two just as Erina grasped the branch above. She was now hanging from it. The demons looked round at the sound of the branch snapping, giving Raven just enough time to run at top speed. He sped towards Cyrus’ tower. He also felt guilty about leaving his fellow friend with the demons, but he knew that Cyrus was the only one that could help them.Raven knocked desperately on the door, waiting for the astronomer to answer. Cyrus opened the door slowly.“Please don’t disturb me at a time like this Raven, I was just reviewing the properties of dragon’s bl…”“Cyrus – you must come! Erina is surrounded by demons!” Raven said to Cyrus desperately.Cyrus immediately followed Raven so that they could find Erina and save her from the demons. They eventually reached her and found her hanging from the branch, as she had been when Raven left her. Raven almost smiled when he thought how strong and patient she was.Cyrus spoke words of wisdom that Raven could not understand – they could have been part of a spell. The demons immediately turned backwards and retreated to the forest.“That…” Erina panted, coming down from the tree, “…was close…”

Page 13: THE RAVEN’S EYE - Webs 3.doc  · Web viewI interviewed Hanso (who of course was the runner-up of Series 7!) exclusively for The Raven’s Eye with many of the questions that you

“Quickly!” Raven shouted, pointing at the retreating demons, “Follow them and see who ordered them to come here!”“No,” Cyrus replied calmly, “their forces will be too strong for us at the moment.”“I’m just wondering what demons are doing in Alaunus!” Raven said.“That,” Cyrus said, “still remains to be discovered. All we have to do is wait and see what course evil will take.”“That doesn’t seem good enough though!” Raven complained, “we have to do something about the demons before it is too late!”“Raven,” Cyrus said, calming him, “come to my tower and I we will have a cup of tea.”Erina patted Raven on the back as they followed Cyrus to his tower. He was a wizard, and an astronomer, after all so they had to trust his word. They reached Cyrus’ tower and entered, crossing many different coloured potions, in vials big and small. Cyrus led them up to his office, through another door. They entered the office and Cyrus sat down.“Make yourself comfortable,” Cyrus said, passing the two friends a chair each.“Cyrus,” Raven said curiously, “there was something I wanted to ask you.”“What is this, then?” Cyrus replied, somewhat suspiciously.“Well, we climbed Mount Zoat and found a cave. The cave had a blue spirit living inside it. Do you know of this creature?”“I can’t say I have,” Cyrus replied.“Well, this creature had cave drawings on the wall that he seemed to treasure.”Raven described the figures in the drawings on the wall, the horses and men with what looked like staffs in their hands.“Aah,” Cyrus thought, “it sounds like this particular drawings depicts The Great War of Beroat. I would say that the spirit just admires it for the beautiful artwork. Put it out of your mind, Raven. I don’t think it has much importance.”As advised, Raven pushed the cave drawings to the back of his mind, when his mission about retrieving the leaf popped to the front of his mind. He, with help from Erina, told Cyrus about their mission.“Well, it may be dangerous with all these demons around, but I cannot come with you. My legs are too tired for running around like that,” Cyrus replied, “All I can do is wish you the very best of luck on your mission.”Raven and Erina decided to leave and complete their mission right then, while the demons were out of the way in the forest…“Good luck,” Cyrus said as they left, “you may very well need it…”

See what happens in Chapter 4 of Alaunus, when Raven and Erina set out on their mission to find the leaf for Haryad.

BACK STORY: BACK-UP!Jake Collins, the star contributor of Issue 3, has sent me an article including his opinions on the back-story that regularly features in Raven. Enjoy!

While watching Raven series 7, I could not help but feel that the back-story was starting to interfere with the main focus of the show, which always has been and always should be the warriors completing the challenges. During the first series, Raven himself remarked that he hoped the warriors would learn and grow from their experiences in his tournament, and that was all there was to it, which was a perfectly good reason for the tournament to take place. By series 7, however, he was talking about assembling a mighty army to combat Nevar; so far, his army consists of Versad and... Versad! It doesn't really make sense.

I think it's fine for the show to have a bit of back-story, but I think it has been taken too far. The introduction of Nevar as Raven's arch-enemy in series 2 was fine, but to say that every single thing the warriors do is specifically to combat Nevar's evil and that every single demon is working for Nevar is just taking it a bit too far - it shifts the focus of the series from the warriors' experiences to the battle between Raven and Nevar, with the warriors becoming a secondary part of that battle, and I personally find this slightly dissatisfying.

The phenomenon is not as bad in the main show as it is in the two spin-offs. This is my main objection to The Island and The Secret Temple, actually - they're both only about half taken up with the warriors doing the challenges, with the other half dedicated to reems and reems of pointless chat between the actors about the ever more elaborate back-story. Okay, so the warriors needed a reason to go to India, but it could just have been stated once at the start of the show, allowing us to focus on the warriors and the challenges rather than on Raven and his oh-so-amusing exploits with watermelons.

If you want an example of a children's fantasy television show that has plenty of back-story, but never lets it eclipse the actual gameplay, you need look no further than Knightmare, which, as I'm sure you all know, is the subject of my own humble fanzine at www.knightmare.com/tes. Knightmare has bags and bags of back-story which, as with Raven, involves a struggle between good and evil. However, the specifics of the back-story are contained not within the individual teams' quests, detracting from the gameplay, but in a series of accompanying books. Occasionally, particularly at the end of some series, the struggle between good and evil would

Page 15: THE RAVEN’S EYE - Webs 3.doc  · Web viewI interviewed Hanso (who of course was the runner-up of Series 7!) exclusively for The Raven’s Eye with many of the questions that you

creep into the plot, but it was always featured as a definite part of the quest, and was first and foremost a challenge for the team to complete. (For the well-informed, I'm thinking here specifically of Lord Fear's plans to attack Treguard with a red dragon and then a giant troll.)

Don't get me wrong - I think Raven is great and it's definitely the best children's programme of the current century, but I just feel it would benefit from going back to its roots a little, and from not trying to make every single second of the show a huge part of the battle against Nevar. The warriors come to Raven to gain experience, knowledge and wisdom, and to have a lot of good, wholesome fun. That's all the back-story the show really needs, so let's cut out all this "the sun went behind the moon" and "Nevar wants to kill you all however and whenever he can" because it's swamping the show, and it just isn't necessary!

Back to me: What are your opinions on the matter? I personally don’t mind the back-story, except when it contradicts with the actual competition. For example, when he made an army of Versad! Email me your opinions on back-story at [email protected]

Interview with hanso – part 2I interviewed Hanso (who of course was the runner-up of Series 7!) exclusively for The Raven’s Eye with many of the questions that you submitted! Here is Part 2! Enjoy!

TRE: Aside from the overall challenge you faced, can you recall any particularly hairy moments on the quest? Did you ever find yourself thinking, "Argh, that's it, I'm out!"?Hanso: Can I say Blasted Mountain? The first Blasted Mountain I did, I lost all four challenges and going into The Last Stand with only one life made me sure that I wasn’t going to go through,

I was gutted. But I did .

How did you get through this and keep fighting? The one thing that kept me going after Blasted Mountain was the others. Versad, Danil, Lipra and all the girls especially, but mostly Danil. He supported me right to the end. That’s why he’s my best boy mate. I had a lot of support from Versad as my boyfriend but the girls were there for me from beginning to end.

Did you get to try out the Way of the Warrior? No I didn’t but I would have loved to have a go! Not if the competition was at stake but just for fun!

Page 16: THE RAVEN’S EYE - Webs 3.doc  · Web viewI interviewed Hanso (who of course was the runner-up of Series 7!) exclusively for The Raven’s Eye with many of the questions that you

Does anyone recognise you in the streets?I’ve never been recognised in the streets – though it would be great if I was! I sometimes get looks like someone recognises me but no one says anything, I wish someone would. I’d love a fan! Haha!

How did your friends react when you got through? They were amazingly supportive and so jealous! I sometimes get hassled about it but I lift my head high. Those people aren’t worth it, I’ve done something I loved and don’t regret a moment of it and my friends stuck by me the whole time.

Did you audition with the Secret Temple warriors and if you did, did you meet any that got to the show?Yes I did do an audition with them. I could have chosen to be on the Secret Temple as my choice. I met Sonro, Taylan, Clemmy (I have no idea what her warrior name is!), Robyn (don’t know hers either!!) and they are all amazing!

Who were your top three best friends on Raven? All of them! Ah - I have to pick? I can’t do that! I’ll give you my top ten: Versad, Danil, Mygar, Dylar, Kesem, Ardhu, Vansha, Lipra, Wilsa and Sonos.

Have you watched your quest on TV? Did you find the experience funny/surreal/embarrassing?Yes, I watched it and I DID find it embarrassing on Day 3 of the quest of the finals when I shouted on Riddle Bridge and on Tower Build when I said random things and knocked my own tower down after! Also I was embarrassed to see myself crying after Boulder Run – but at least it means I felt strongly about what I was doing.

Do you have a favourite Raven series and warrior from the past?My favourite series was Series 6 – that’s the one that made me really want to be a member of Raven! My favourite warrior of the past was Kinsa. I thought she was a real inspiration – and she came second like me! And she was the sun in the finals – like me!

Which emblem is your favourite? If you hadn't have been the sun or the water, which emblem would you have liked to have been? The sun. If not the sun or water it would be the tree.

How did you feel when you were going into the Raven audition?I felt I had a lot riding on this first impression but I knew if I wanted to do this then I would have to show them who I am and not pull back – just be me!

If you had the staff of power, what would you use it for and why?I would rid all the evil in the world, starting with Nevar! Haha! I would put an end to all the poverty and sickness and pain in the world.

Except from you, who did you want to win the staff of power? If I had to choose anyone, I would have chosen Versad. Throughout the competition he was so strong and competitive, he was my biggest competition so if I couldn’t have won then I’m glad that it was him.

I hope you enjoyed the exclusive interview with Hanso! Maybe there will be more interviews with warriors in the future! We will see…!
