This coming Thursday December 13 th at 6:30 Pm we will have the December Meeting of The Roane County Amateur Radio Club in the Rockwood Community Center. Please make plans to attend. We will be having our annual Pot Luck Christmas Dinner and Election of Officers. Members are asked to bring a covered dish (vegetable and / or desert ) RCARC will provide ham . We would like to have all members present if possible. Currently I ( Jim K4APY) will run for Treasurer again and Bart Mayo K0GYO is running for Secretary. We still need some folks to step up for President and Vice President. Having more than one person running for office is good too, so we encourage competition :-) . Seriously, I do hope some of you will step up to the plate and run for office. We have many talented folks in RCARC who can offer our club so much. With the end of the year we also usher in the beginning which brings up membership renewals. Memberships run January through December , so in December we will be accepting renewals for RCARC memberships and repeater donations. Memberships are a large part of our income so please consider renewing your RCARC membership for 2019. Phil KE4LSH took some of the surplus equipment mainly repeaters to 2 hamfests and sold some of it for RCARC generating $450 for the club. Phil sold the old Kendecom KE4RX and 2 old GE Mastr repeater bodies. Also sold one of the Cat 200-B repeater controllers. Phil has spent some time and transportation of this equipment to be sold for us so at the meeting I will make a motion to offer Phil reimbursement for the cost of his 2 tables at 2 hamfests ($40) after discussion by the group present. Let's all remember Sterling N4VAV in our prayers as he is still under the weather and been in and out of the hospital, so please remember him and hopefully he will have a speedy and full recovery. I hope to see everyone at the December 13 th Pot Luck Dinner and Election of Officers. Talk In will be on the 147.015+ (PL 110.9) repeater. C-ya!! Jim White [email protected] www.ke4rx.org

EV/EHV vs Radioor

Death of AM radio?

From Planet Analog, comes an article discussing the “law of unintended or unexpected consequences of technology advances”.Vehicles have long been a source of noise on our radios. Operating mobile, especially on the HF bands, has been a real challenge. My Pinzgauer came with a fully shielded ignition system. That wasn't just for the radios inside, but so that an opposing military could not “hear” the vehicle. But with the advances in electronics, more devices are being installed in our vehicles. From electronic fuel injection to the loss of a distributor, everything is controlled by the ECM, or Engine Control Module. There are some diesel engines which are using electronics to operate the intake and exhaust valves. And that takes plenty of power! Yes, that wonderful “module” with stuff inside has revolutionized our society. But all those modules have a need for some sort of stable power that isn't that 13 to 15 or sovolts from the trusty old lead-acid battery under the hood. Enter that wonderful switching regulator – and all the “hash” that comes with it!We've doubtless had issues with “wall warts” before. I have. And the modern motor vehicle gets more of them every year. The electric vehicles have even more of those – and at higher power levels. The battery plant in the EV, or the Hybrid Electric Vehicle, is usually above 300VDC. The electric motor still needs many amps of current at that voltage; and to control the speed, that power is switched. It seems that the higher the rate of switching, the more efficient the control. And that switching is very binary: either on or off. Those sharp rise and fall times are rich with harmonics which extent far into the HF bands and are now even affecting the lower VHF bands. And now, there is so much noise from the newer EV & HEV that the AM radio is not available – even as an option. So think of what happens when one drives down your street. That broadband noise created by all those switching regulators delivering anything from milliamps to tens or even hundreds of amps are masking whatever you really wanted to hear from that DXstation, or even just the statewide net on 3980 Khz.And you can forget about HF mobile. You are surrounded!Link: (https://www.planetanalog.com/author.asp?section_id=396&doc_id=565017)Submitted by:Cliff KD4GT
