MARYHILL & Springburn MSP Patricia Ferguson has secured a meeting with the Minister responsible for tackling sectarianism in Scotland to discuss the importance of working with schools to tackle the issue. Ms Ferguson welcomed the offer made by Roseanna Cunningham, Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs, and indicated her intention to take her up on it. The move came in a debate on Sectarianism and Anti- Irish Racism in the Scottish Parliament earlier this week, during which Ms Ferguson highlighted the success of the school twinning fund introduced by the previous Labour Scottish Government and scrapped by the SNP after only two years. The Maryhill & Springburn MSP also spoke of the importance of joint denominational and non-denominational school campuses, such as the Keppoch campus in her constituency. Patricia Ferguson told the Re- Gen North: “If we are to break the depressing cycle of threat, hatred and violence, we must look beyond the football terraces and invest in quality education. “People are not born bigoted; they become exposed to bigotry and intolerance. Without early intervention there is a risk that another generation will be blighted by the bitterness of old battles and prejudices. “Education initiatives were at the heart of the first-ever Government action plan to tackle sectarianism which I was proud to make a contribution to as Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport. The measures that this put in place have borne considerable fruit in recent years, most notably with the building of shared campuses and the twinning of schools. The Keppoch campus in my constituency is a genuine success story. “I would be interested to learn whether there is ongoing work to establish more shared campuses in Scotland and whether the SNP Government will re-introduce the twinning projects, which cost a mere £100,000 to put in place and were so successful in bringing together young people of all faiths and none to work on shared projects and learn about one another. “I welcome the Minister’s agreement to meet with me to discuss further these important issues and look forward to this in the near future.” The Re-Gen North is delighted that moves are at last being made to try and eliminate this scourge on our society. For far too long we as residents in Glasgow have not only tolerated the sectarian slant many of us if we are being honest have contributed to it through comments, acts and association.

The move came in a debate on Sectarianism and Anti-Irish Racism in the Scottish Parliament earlier this week, during which Ms Ferguson highlighted the success of the school twinning fund introduced by the previous Labour Scottish Government and scrapped by the SNP after only two years. The Maryhill & Springburn MSP also spoke of the importance of joint denominational and non-denominational school campuses, such as the Keppoch campus in her constituency.

Patricia Ferguson told the Re-Gen North:

“If we are to break the depressing cycle of threat, hatred and violence, we must look beyond the football terraces and invest in quality education.

“I would be interested to learn whether there is ongoing work to establish more shared campuses in Scotland and whether the SNP Government

will re-introduce the twinning projects, which cost a mere £100,000 to put in place and were so successful in bringing together young people of all faiths and none to work on shared projects and learn about one another.

“I welcome the Minister’s agreement to meet with me to discuss further these important issues and look forward to this in the near future.” The Re-Gen North is delighted that moves are at last being made to try

and eliminate this scourge on our society. For far too long we as residents in Glasgow have not only tolerated the sectarian slant many of us if we are being honest have contributed to it through comments, acts and association. Let’s hope that the discussions which have began can contribute to a society where being a “Billy” or a “Tim” is no longer a hindrance to anyone or indeed an acceptable topic of conversation in any household. We wish the talks well.

Sir Tom Hunter pays tribute to the true entrepreneurs of RSBi SIR Tom Hunter visited Glasgow’s Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi) recently– and was shown the range of opportunities this state of the art manufacturing facility provides for disabled workers. RSBi is now one of Europe’s largest assisted workshop facilities, employing 260 workers, of whom more than 50 per cent have a disability. It is operated by City Building, Glasgow City Council’s arm’s-length construction company. During his tour of the factory, Sir Tom Hunter was shown how the latest technology is being used to help staff produce high quality furniture, timber kits for new construction projects and bespoke office solutions to exacting customer standards. He met a variety of workers on the factory floor to hear about RSBi’s unique social ethos and extensive range of products. City Building managing director Willie Docherty, said: “At RSBi we place a strong emphasis on empowering the individual to help themselves. Many of our workers have overcome challenges to be part of the RSBi team and help to build a

successful manufacturing organisation. That makes them entrepreneurs in their own right. “We were delighted to welcome Sir Tom Hunter to RSBi because he is a champion of the entrepreneur. Much of the philanthropic work Sir Tom undertakes is about recognising the triumph of the human spirit which is something he has seen for himself at RSBi.” Sir Tom Hunter said: “I have been very impressed with the workers I have

met on my visit to RSBi. They are entrepreneurs in the true sense of the word. They contribute to a successful business and are carrying out a range of skilled jobs.” Last month Sir Tom Hunter received the Great Scot Award at an STV awards ceremony in London for his tireless work helping others. The 50-year-old is Scotland’s first home-grown billionaire and in 1988 set up The Hunter Foundation to support worthwhile projects.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

GHA’S SENIOR CITIZENS TAKE A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANETenants from GHA’s sheltered housing complexes enjoyed a sneak preview of Glasgow’s newest tourist attraction.

MORE than 150 senior citizens were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the Riverside Museum on the banks of the River Clyde weeks before its official opening on 21 June. They were among the first visitors to see the huge collection of steam trains, trams, vintage cars, bikes and ship models. The £74million building is the state-of-the-art replacement for the former Museum of Transport. The Riverside Museum is run by Glasgow Life on behalf of Glasgow City Council. May Baird, 77, from GHA’s Anniesland Crescent sheltered housing complex, said: “The museum is absolutely smashing, especially the tram cars. I used to stay in Maryhill and used to ride on them when I was young. It’s great to see them again.”Lorraine McLaren, GHA’s Neighbourhood Renewal Manager, said: “It was a fantastic trip down memory lane for our residents. They had so many great stories to tell from when they were

growing up. We are really delighted Glasgow Life has given us the opportunity to visit the new Riverside Museum. It was a great day for all.” Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor George Redmond, said: “The old Museum of Transport held a very special place in the hearts of the people of Glasgow because of their real emotional connection with its collection. “We are delighted that senior citizens who are GHA tenants were among the first to see its new home in the stunning Riverside Museum, which will bring the collection to life in a way like never before.” Nearly 300 members of the Silver Deal Active programme, which provides free exercise and art classes for the over-60s in Glasgow, will also be given a tour of the museum before its grand opening. Silver Deal Active is a partnership between GHA, Glasgow Life and the North-East and South Community Health and Care Partnerships.

You are entering into a brilliant period for increasing your earning power, and you’ll be busy taking charge of your finances. Money-making opportunities are likely to present themselves, and you feel especially motivated to take advantage of them. Whether it’s a promotion or an all-new position, this is a good time for pursuing your dreams and asking for what you want.

Neptune is retro grade from the 3rd of June so be prepared to go within to find the answers you will be drawn into nature, if you follow your instinct and take that walk you will let go of all the negatives of the past and embrace a fresh start as this is indeed time for your new year to begin and a new way of thinking.

Saturn turns direct from the 13th of June and you could face a few restrictions, stay positive and you will overcome them. You seem to have released some of the demons from your past and a lighter much happier Gemini is surfacing. Time to blow away the cobwebs and start again.

As your sign is ruled by the moon the next full moon on the 15th of June is significant for you as you are peeling back your shell and revealing the vulnerable side of yourself which few get to see, and guess what we like it. It is nice to see the real you. Time for change, let go of the past and embrace a warm and bright future.

The majestic lion, the King of the Beasts, is Leo’s symbol. Throughout history, the lion has symbolized sovereignty, rulership, and courage this month is going to see just that. You have accrued all this power within you this month and all who no longer serve you better watch out. In with the new and out with the old!

While you’ve been rather introspective recently, dear Virgo, and you continue to be withdrawn in the first week of June, you begin to come out of your shell this month. You are hungry for adventure and experiences that lift you above your usual concerns and daily routine. Educational or travel opportunities are opening up in your life, and will continue to do so throughout 2011.

June is a strong month for taking charge of finances, dear Libra, and in particular those shared with others, debts, and loans. It is a good time for borrowing or settling debts, if necessary. Either way, dealing with debt now tends to generate positive outcomes. Relationships have been making headlines in your life recently, and this month, the more intimate aspects of sharing with a special someone become your primary concern.

The first half of June is excellent for work matters, It’s a strong period for personal influence on the job. Some of you might even meet a special someone through your work or health activities. Close partnerships become a major focus as the month progresses. In fact, throughout the remainder of 2011, relationship opportunities are likely to be priority.

Whether it’s a new romance or an existing one, passions run high. Casual dating, entertainment, and creative hobbies all fare well now. As June progresses, work matters become a stronger priority, as do any self-care and health programs. It’s an excellent time not only for finding work, but also for relationships on the job.

By mid-June, your creative juices stir, and you find more opportunities to enjoy yourself. Romance is highly favored now. Your mood is playful and others more readily appreciate your unique romantic and creative style. Artists can find much success now and in the months ahead, and dabblers can pick up new interests.

The pace of your life continues to be hectic as you have a finger in many pies now. The first week of the month is excellent for learning and communication. You are getting your message across with charm and grace. By mid-month, you enter an extended period in which home and family life come into strong focus and are set to improve.

While June can begin at a hectic pace, you’re likely to find much solace in home and family as the month progresses. Efforts to make improvements to your home life should be very successful this month, and you’re likely to want to entertain from home or do some redecorating. This month, Jupiter moves to a favorable position in relation to your sign, boosting not only your confidence but also both motivation and ability to communicate effectively with others.

Happy happy days!! At long last it looks like summer has finally arrived. What a difference a little sunshine and good weather make to your day. If like me and you have a summer holiday planned you will be watching the pennies. So no spare cash for take away meals and eating out. Never mind in my house we don’t miss out as I am a dab hand at re-creating most of our favourites. Like Burger King Chicken Royale and McD’s fillet of fish. As well as my version of their hot apple pies. So get ready to eat well, save money and treat your taste buds.

Chicken Royale Sandwiches

Skinless chicken mini fillets2 cups of plain flour1 tsp of celery salt1 tbsp dried garlic powder1 tbsp dried onion powder1tsp cayenne pepper2 eggs beatenExtra flour to dredge the filletsBag of washed salad leaves1 bottle of Caesar salad dressingMature cheddar cheese slicesHot oil for fryingPlain rolls or oven bottom muffins

Arrange three large bowls. In one bowl have a little plain flour, in another the beaten egg and in the third all the dried ingredients and the plain flour well mixed. Dredge the fillets one by one in the plain flour to coat them well, then into the beaten egg and into the seasoned flour. It is best to keep one hand dry so only use your left hand to dip chicken in the egg. Ensure you coat the egged chicken really well with the seasoned flour. Fry off in a shallow pan 1/3 filled with oil turn once and pop into a medium oven until all fillets are cooked. Slice the rolls and top one half with cheese. Pop the rolls into the oven to melt the cheese. Toss the salad leaves in the Caesar dressing and place on the roll, top with 2 or 3 fillets and close with the cheese on top. Enjoy with fries or potato salad.

Fish Fillet Sandwiches

Slice a large fish of your liking…(I prefer cod as it’s chunky and meaty) into even size pieces1 egg beatenSalt and pepperPlain flour for dredgingPlain breadcrumbsA little butter for fryingPlain rolls or oven bottom muffins

Season the flour and dredge fish through , dip into the egg and then the crumbs. Fry fish off in a little butter until golden. Serve on a toasted roll or muffin with either tartar sauce or ketchup.

Hot apple fritters

1 pack of ready made French style crepes2 large bramley apples sliced finely1 tbsp of sugarLarge knob of butter1 pack of pancake batter mix made up quite thicklyHot oil for frying

Fry the sliced apple with the sugar and butter until just softened. Allow to cool. Roll up 2 tsp of apple into a crepe ensure all ends are tucked in. Dip each crepe into the pancake mix to coat them and fry in hot oil until crisp and golden. Delicious on their own or with ice cream but be very careful as the filling gets seriously hot.

North Glasgow Housing Association celebrate 35 yearsOn 14th June 1976 the association (then called Mansel and St Monance Housing Association) was formed and registered with the Scottish Housing Regulator. Back in 1976 the average house price was £12,704, a gallon of petrol cost 76 pence and the yearly inflation rate was 16.5%! Changed days indeed. From those early days with just a handful of closes North Glasgow HA has grown through new build and stock transfer to an organisation that now manages over 7,000 properties. That’s an incredible success story in the North of the city. Robert Tamburrini, Chief Executive of North Glasgow HA said: “There have been many successes over the years but last year was without doubt our most successful. We built our 1000th new build home, we employed even more local people when we launched our social enterprise company ng2 and we became the largest community based housing association in Glasgow when tenants voted overwhelmingly to join us from GHA. In 1976 one of the rules in the housing association’s rule book was to “benefit the community”. That ethos remains the same today, 35 years on. The association’s vision is to build a new North Glasgow: a great place to live, learn, work, visit and invest in.

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of the

Football Match between Celtic

and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it all ca

lms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US the general public t

o

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that we will n

ot tolerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer. T

he

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. Victo

ria Crosses have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE – NOTHING

LESS) there is m

ayhem and serious injury

meted out for ju

st being “ONE OF TH

EM”.

Football riv

alry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St. Jo

hnstone

play Kilmarnock, there are players fr

om

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Firm”

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has Nothing To

Do With Football!! So what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether they had it in

the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors th

inking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCOHOL. T

he majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in such a short sp

ace of time

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their emotions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “Old Firm

” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers i

n an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just th

e slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part of th

e

story, all of a sudden are constru

ed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacceptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but when

it comes to

the “Old Firm” fu

n goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE AS BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Firm

” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Firm” m

atch. We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Firm” m

eet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cra

sh or a house

fire, would you stop to think...”I

wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them. I

f you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE ALL D

O.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

He also stated that Morrison

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

AN AFFORDABLE finance project has helped Glasgow residents save over £3million since its launch 4 years ago.SCOTCASH offers cost effective personal loans to residents who may not have access to products from a bank or building society, with the key of reducing the number of people using often more expensive doorstep lenders. The initiative also provides basic bank accounts, money advice and savings accounts as well as offering finance packages on household goods including washing machines, cookers, fridge freezers and microwaves. Scotcash is now well established in Glasgow and with some doorstep lenders charging interest rates as high as 160% APR, the finance project has been credited with helping local residents save over £3 million since 2007. And with all loans based on an individual’s current circumstances and not their past credit history, it makes Scotcash a real alternative for many residents looking for help with their finances. Scotcash has also won awards most notably it was named overall winner of the Guardian Public Service Awards which it won ahead of 850 competing entries

from across the United Kingdom. Scotcash Manager Leah Cameron explains: “Scotcash was formed in an effort to rescue people from doorstep lenders and, at the same time, tackle the deeper financial issues facing people who are less affluent than others. “We can offer affordable loans, basic bank accounts, savings accounts and high quality independent

financial advice. These are real solutions that people in Glasgow can benefit from as part of the Scotcash service.” Scotcash works alongside Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government, Glasgow Community Planning Partnership and Glasgow Housing Association. It is also supported by the Royal Bank of Scotland. If you require any further information, contact Scotcash direct on 0141 276 0525.

FIVE STAR GHA WINS SCOTLAND’STOP BUSINESS AWARD

Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) has been awarded Scotland’s most prestigious business award.

GHA was also the only organisation from the public, private and voluntary sectors to gain the maximum five-star Recognised for Excellence rating by Quality Scotland. The Recognised for Excellence award, celebrating its 20th year in Scotland, is a Europe-wide scheme for organisations seeking continuous improvement, excellent customer service and high performance and is scored against the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) framework. The 2011 Scottish Award for Business Excellence was presented to Gordon Sloan, chair of Scotland’s largest social landlord, at a ceremony in Edinburgh. Eight independent assessors from some of the UK’s leading business and public-service organisations evaluated every aspect of GHA’s activities and performance during a four-day visit in early May. The Quality Scotland judges highlighted several key successes, including:•GHA is successfully working with key partners and stakeholders to achieve mutual objectives for Glasgow;• a clear vision is in place that puts customers first, with much work being done to engage and consult with people;• staff are empowered to improve services; • GHA is improving tenants’ lives through initiatives such as creating jobs and training places; • and the focus on improving the “customer experience” has been

successful and has led to GHA identifying and eliminating waste in working practices. GHA Chief Executive Martin Armstrong said: “We are absolutely delighted to be both named as the overall winner by Quality Scotland and to achieve the coveted five-star rating. “GHA has undergone substantial changes over the past year to put our customers at the very heart of everything we do. This award reflects these changes and the tremendous hard work and commitment of our staff across the city.” Mr Armstrong, who previously led West Lothian Council Housing Services to the Scottish Award for Business Excellence in 2005-2006, added: “This is only the start. We

are determined to build on this achievement and to continue to improve the services we offer to our 45,000 tenants and 26,000 factored homeowners.” Dave Bradley, CEO of Quality Scotland, said: “Quality Scotland is delighted to see that GHA’s tremendous efforts in maintaining a focus of excellence has culminated in the winning of this award. “GHA had previously entered these awards as part of its long-term commitment to excellence and have used the feedback over the past four years to help them get to this winning position today. GHA staff have a strong belief in the power of business excellence, which is totally aligned to the beliefs of Quality Scotland.”

Here’s a list of simple things you can do immediately

• Turn it off when not in use (lights, television, DVD player, Hi Fi, computer etc. etc. ...)• Turn down the central heating slightly (try just 1 to 2 degrees C). Just 1 degree will help reduce your heating bill by about 8%.• Turn down the water heating setting (just 2 degrees will make a significant saving)• Check the central heating timer setting - remember there is no point heating the house after you have left for work• Fill your dish washer and washing machine with a full load - this will save you water, electricity, and washing powder• Fill the kettle with only as much water as you need• Do your weekly shopping in a single trip• Hang out the washing to dry rather than tumble drying it The following is a list of items that may take an initial investment, but should pay for themselves over the course of 1-4 years through savings on your energy bills.

• Fit energy saving light bulbs• Install thermostatic valves on your radiators• Insulate your hot water tank, your loft and your walls• Installing cavity wall installation• By installing 180mm thick loft insulation• Replace your old fridge / freezer (if it is over 15 years old), with a new one with energy efficiency rating of “A”• Replace your old boiler with a new energy efficient condensing boiler Travel less and travel more carbon footprint friendly.

• Car share to work, or for the kids school run• Use the bus or a train rather than your car• For short journeys either walk or cycle• Try to reduce the number of flights you take• See if your employer will allow you to work from home one day a week• Next time you replace your car - check out diesel engines. As well as your primary carbon footprint, there is also a secondary footprint that you cause through your buying habits.

• Don’t buy bottled water if your tap water is safe to drink• Buy local fruit and vegetables, or even try growing your own• Buy foods that are in season locally• Don’t buy fresh fruit and vegetables which are out of season, they may have been flown in• Reduce your consumption of meat• Buy Organic Foods• Don’t buy over packaged products• Recycle as much as possible

Building a Sustainable Future

In 2007, we established a dedicated environmental unit to identify green issues and to deliver tangible results. Since then, City Building has reduced its carbon footprint (for gas and electric consumption) by 25% and further reductions are targeted. This has resulted in us winning a number of national “green” awards. We have also successfully achieved the ISO 14001 environmental standard and the FISP accreditation (Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme), in recognition of our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and maximising sustainability across the business. City Building operates one of Europe’s largest supported employment facilities at Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (RSBi), where over 50% of staff have a disability. Here, a range of green solutions have been implemented, such as introducing a wood fired boiler system, which is fuelled by off-cuts from the wood-related production processes. We have constructed a micro renewables centre at our Construction Skills Academy in Glasgow. This is a shop window for innovative

products using solar and wind power, ground and air source heat pump technologies, energy saving cladding systems, energy efficient boilers, water saving technologies and rain water harvesting systems. This Centre is the first of its kind in Central Scotland and will enable all organisations involved in construction to understand the need to proactively address green issues and, importantly, how to address and satisfy those needs. At City Building, sustainability is an integral part of our business activities, from office and transport functions to manufacturing, construction, project and maintenance work and training. However, the term “sustainability” not only relates to the products we manufacture and procure, but also to our staff development and our impact on society. For example, our Queenslie Training Centre offers a wide range of apprenticeship courses to upskill and offer life employment opportunities to young people from across Glasgow. We also provide a range of training and life skills opportunities at City Building’s Construction Skills Academy, which offers nationally-recognised training programmes to

assist people into employment, the majority of whom are far removed from the labour market. Through our training initiatives and apprenticeship schemes, we are providing skills to the workforce of tomorrow and generating true economic and sustainable benefits in our local communities and beyond. We are helping women to access the

construction industry, as well as lone parents, ethnic minorities and young apprentices to develop their core and life skills and to make a positive contribution to the local and national economy.City Building – Building a Sustainable Future

1: Start smallTo make a difference, you don’t have to start big. Remember, every effort counts, small or large. A small start is better than not at all, and it can help give you greater confidence to take bigger steps down the road. What it means to start small is to start with yourself. Look at the things that you own and use. Things around you that you have control over. These things could be in your home, in your workplace, at your hotel room during your holidays, in your car, etc. and as you become comfortable recycling your own things, you can expand your circle of influence to those around you, such as your immediate family, and then your relatives and friends.Recycling tips 2: Reduce and Reuse firstTo make a difference to the environment, you should first look towards reducing consumption, as it is actually the first and most effective step toward producing less waste (consuming less automatically produces less waste). However, there are times when consumption is necessary. In these cases, re-use as much as possible before recycling

any remaining materials. Reusing products, where possible, is even better than recycling because the item does not need to be reprocessed before it can be used again. Finally, if you have to make the purchases, buy products that are made of recycled materials . And make sure you recycle the items when you don’t need them anymore. Look out for the recycling symbols on your products that tell you that they are made of recycled materials, or are designed for recycling. These things count!Recycling tips 3: Know what to recycleBefore you start on your recycling journey, the basic knowledge you need is to know what to recycle. There are many items in the house, office, school etc that can be recycled. The items range from paper, glass, metals like aluminium, plastic, electronic items and more! For example, aluminium (used to make our coke cans) can be recycled over and over again, while not all types of plastics can be recycled. You need to look for the recycling symbols embedded at the bottom of most plastic bottles to be able to differentiate the type of plastic you

have. In other words, before you start, you will need to know what to recycle and where to send them for recycling. Read more!Recycling tips 4: Green tips for the homeThe home is where you can find lots of things for recycling. Things are being purchased on a regular basis (eg. groceries and household consumables). Often these products comes with lots of packaging that end up immediately as waste, if no attempts are made to reduce, reuse and recycle them. As you become more and more familiar with the habit of recycling, innovate and find your own creative ways of reducing, reusing and recycling! Also make it an effort to share your tips with your family, remember, all efforts count. The more individuals

that make it their individual responsibility to recycle and protect the earth, the better!Recycling tips 5: Green tips for the officeThe office is another place where you can expand your recycling efforts to. At the office, some materials such as paper can be used at alarming rates. At other offices, styrofoam cups are used on a daily basis for coffee and tea breaks, and at meetings. Imagine the amount of non-biodegradable waste these offices contribute to the incinerator and landfills on a daily basis! Scary!

North Glasgow Housing Association takes up the “Climate Challenge”WHETHER you live in a flat or a house in North Glasgow you can take part in an exciting new project which is being introduced by North Glasgow Housing Association who are working with Award winning project “Playbusters”. The aim of the initiative is to promote greener

sustainable communities through a “Grow Green” programme. “Playbusters” recently received the Queen’s Award for Volunteering (equivalent to the MBE). Chief Executive of North Glasgow HA, Robert Tamburrini, never a man to miss an opportunity to bring good ideas to the North of the city, contacted Margaret

Layden (“Playbusters”), about working in North Glasgow as he’d heard of the excellent “Climate Challenge” work “Playbusters” had been doing in the east end. Robert discovered that through the “Grow Green” programme schools, nurseries and community centres in the east end had

raised beds installed for growing spaces and planting flowers. Robert said: “I felt that introducing a similar programme in North Glasgow would benefit our tenants and give them the opportunity to not only grow their own vegetables for the first time but to also make the area brighter by planting and raising flowers,

whilst also helping the environment as a whole” Part of the work will involve identifying and transforming derelict spaces and this is where residents can become involved. “Playbusters” have already begun working with housing services staff within the Saracen and Possil areas, identifying small areas and it is hoped

that work will begin soon. This is something that Robert Tamburrini is excited about, as transforming areas into growing plots supports North Glasgow’s vision of creating a new north Glasgow: a great place to live, learn, work, visit and invest in.We at the Re-Gen North have witnessed the massive changes in the east end due to the partnership between local residents and the “Playbusters” team and we have no doubt that thanks to the foresight of Robert Tamburrini in identifying the excellent work that can be achieved by working in partnership with successful organisations, residents in the North Glasgow Housing Association area will certainly benefit from this latest initiative.

Glasgow Furniture Initiative Going From Strength to StrengthDRIVING through Glasgow recently we at the Re-Gen North have noticed the amount of “Recycling Furniture Shops” that seem to be opening up. This made us wonder about just how much of the donations of furniture actually go towards helping those people who find it hard to actually furnish their house and how much gets sold on for profit therefore by-passing those who really depend on the cut-price organisations. This is where Glasgow Furniture Initiative (incorporating Ruchill Furniture Project), really comes to the forefront as the policy and make-up of the company is a tremendous testament to those behind the organisation. GFI was set up to recycle old and unwanted furniture and to this end they employed skilled labour (most of them live locally), to re-vamp the furniture which was donated to it. Starting off on a small scale GFI soon built up a great reputation as more and more people realised the tremendous value and savings that could be made by visiting their outlets. The first place they became established in this area was in the unit at Chapel Street Maryhill and the quality of the furniture on offer was second to none with prices to match. Soon word spread and it wasn’t only those who could scarcely afford to furnish their abode, that were popping into the shop, no indeed, those who liked to seek out a bargain such as those who rented out furnished accommodation were also taking advantage of the great offers available on a regular basis. Knowing that they weren’t being fleeced meant that those who donated furniture also began to tell their friends to ring GFI if they had any old furniture they wanted to dispose off but felt it could be put to better use than sticking it into a land-fill site. As more and more people discovered

GFI, the company needed more space to not only recycle the old furniture it also needed the space to show off the finished products. Last year Glasgow Furniture Initiative opened their first “Superstore” at Blairtummock Road in Easterhouse (co-incidentally very close to the City Council’s Waste Disposal Plant), only a short trip along the M8 motorway. Robert Stewart Chief Executive of GFI is very proud of the way the company has grown and also proud of the fact that they are also employing more and more local people. Robert told the Re-Gen North, “We have had a tremendous response to our recent Spring Campaign which we ran and due to this we are working very hard to turn the donations we received into quality goods. Other initiatives have also borne fruit and we are delighted at these also but this is only the beginning as we aim to encourage the vast majority of good-hearted people in the Glasgow area to automatically think of GFI when they are contemplating changing their furniture and wish to dispose of the old stuff. We are positive that such items can be recycled to our own high standards and in doing so can assist others who maybe can’t afford top dollar at this present time to furnish their homes at very affordable prices”. This is where you can help, GFI are crying out for more and more donations which with their expertise can be transformed into quality goods which would make any householder proud to own. Give Glasgow Furniture initiative (Incorporating Ruchill Furniture Initiative) a call and not only that, encourage your neighbours, workmates and friends to do the same. Together we can help not only others but also the environment by getting involved in Re-Cycling Week (Throughout the Year...If that makes sense).

Recycle Week is an annual event and the perfect opportunity to highlight the many ways we can do just a little bit more to help our local environment. There are lots of easy things we can all do, including:• recycling glass jars as well as bottles; • recycling things from upstairs as well as downstairs;• reusing, recycling or donating unwanted items;• recycling at school, work or while out and about.

Recycle Week : 20-26 June 2011What is Recycle Week?

GFI’s key aims are to;

.Help relieve poverty . Improve the lives of people in disadvantaged positions

.Providing essential, quality household furniture..Provide social, environmental and economic benefits by reducing unnecessary goods being sent to landfill and help meet Scotland’s waste reduction targets.

.Promote social inclusion and wellbeing through our volunteering and training opportunities..Tackle social problems, improve community spirit and raise awareness of environmental issues.

Primary School pupils mean businessPAUL Martin, the Labour MSP for Glasgow Provan, congratulated the P7 pupils from St Philomena’s Primary School who organised and ran a successful ‘Business Breakfast’ recently in the school. The pupils held the event early in the morning before their normal lessons to gain an insight into the world of work (and George of the Re-Gen still thought it was the middle of the night as he met up with the rest of the invited guests). Over 30 guests attended including Paul Martin MSP, William Bain MP, Bailie Gerry Leonard and guests from local businesses. Paul Martin was so impressed with the event that he submitted a Parliamentary Motion congratulating the pupils.Mr Martin said:“I was really impressed by how well the kids have organised and

run this meeting. It shows that we have confident youngsters who are able use initiative and show their entrepreneurial spirit.“From what I saw, I know that these kids will be very successful in the future. They are a credit to their school and their teachers.” The children separated the guests into groups and quizzed them on the various aspects of the work they were involved in. The questions were well thought out and the kids were able to glean information which would be collated after the guests had departed. Everyone who attended was very impressed by the way the children conducted themselves and the manner in which they made everyone welcome. Head Teacher Stephenie Tait said:“I would like to thank all that

attended to make the event so successful. I hope the skills and confidence that the class have gained will really make a difference when they enter the world of work when they are

older.“The pupils have worked really hard to make the ‘Business Breakfast’ a success and it is great that they are getting recognition in The Scottish Parliament.”

Garden of Eden Opens in RoystonLOCAL residents and schoolchildren from Royston Primary, St Rochs Primary, Greenview and St Stephens, were well represented at the official opening of the Garden of Eden memorial garden in Royston earlier this month. This excellent idea stemmed from the seed of an idea four years ago by Cornel Neil, a teacher at Royston Language Unit , (situated close to the heart of Glasgow’s city centre), proposing the provision of a school community greenspace called the Garden of Eden,

based on an open space area in Rhymer St Royston (just at the rear of Royston Primary School). The project has been an exciting challenge which the children of both the language unit and Royston Primary took up with energy and enthusiasm. The Garden was created partly to develop an environmental study area close at hand and partly to create a memorial focal point for Mark Cummings, a pupil who was killed in 2004 and brothers Paul and Jay Ross who were murdered by their father in 2008. The school’s

eco-committee has worked tirelessly along with local partners from Blochairn, Spireview and Copperworks Housing Associations, Countryside Rangers, Baillie Alan Stewart Deputy Lord Provost, Patricia Ferguson MSP, Glasgow Community and Safety Services, Determined to Succeed and also the Department of Regeneration Services, to plan and design a fitting tribute in remembrance and also a living workspace for children and residents alike to support a bio-diverse environment and to enable both the schoolchildren and the local residents to grow

a variety of vegetables. Liz Davidson, Headteacher of Royston Primary told the Re-Gen North, ‘ It’s marvellous the way everyone in this community has helped to drive this project forward especially when the priority was to give the children leadership and self confidence in using their own initiative and ideas.” Prior to the official opening Cornel Neil led the three schools in a chorus of the Royston Eco song which certainly brought the house down as it was entitled “We are Green, Green, Green, in Royston,” (as if it could have been anything else...Ed). Deputy Lord Provost, Bailie

Alan Stewart told our reporter, ‘ I’ve always had faith that it is the young people of Royston who will be our future leaders and empowered citizens and this project has done all of that. I’m especially proud of the fact that the eco-committee children went to Paris on a mission to come back with new ideas for community involvement and they gave us a super presentation here in the City Chambers to show what they had achieved.” Jordyn McCafferty, one of the eco-committee children said ‘ I liked making designs for the

special fence and I enjoyed seeing other city gardens to get ideas from. It felt good being on the committee.’ The whole project is a credit to the children of the Royston area and the teachers and staff who took part in fulfilling the dream and it certainly transforms Rhymer Street for the better. Everyone attending the opening was touched by the eventual outcome and the Re-Gen North congratulates Cornel, the eco committee and everyone who contributed to the successful opening of a great project.

Things have got off to a flying start following the election. Parliament has returned and we have spent the first couple of weeks debating the Scottish Government’s programme for the coming session. I was pleased to be able to take part in a debate on the important contribution that sport makes to Scotland’s economy, culture and international standing. With 150,000 Scottish children classed as obese I took the opportunity to encourage the SNP Government to renew its

focus on delivering quality PE in schools and to develop a ‘Commonwealth Swimming Fund’ and ‘Commonwealth Legacy Schools Programme’, two ideas from Labour’s 2011 Sports Manifesto, to ensure that we encourage young people to lead more active lives by capitalising on the opportunities presented to Glasgow by the Commonwealth Games.I was pleased to be invited by Scottish Labour leader, Iain Gray, to join his shadow cabinet

as Culture spokesperson. As a former Minister for Culture I know how important all aspects of our culture are to Scotland and to the Scottish people and will work hard to ensure that every person, no matter their background, can become involved in cultural activity.Locally I have been making arrangements to get my monthly surgeries up and running. These are just about finalised and I have already held surgeries in Kelvindale,

Wyndford, Springburn, Maryhill and Milton. Full details of my surgeries can be found on my website at www.patriciaferguson.labour.co.uk or from my office on 946 1300.I have also had the pleasure of attending a number of local events including a production of ‘Glee’ by the North United Communities Musical Theatre Group; the formal opening the Marie Curie Hospice at Stobhill by the Duke of Rothesay; and, the Maryhill Parish Church Spring Fair.

It is a privilege to have been re-elected as one of your SNP MSP’s for Glasgow. I have already held my first surgeries in Springburn and Rutherglen, and will be rolling out surgeries in Maryhill shortly. Having a majority SNP Scottish Government is a huge opportunity to get the additional powers to bring more jobs and prosperity to our communities. Ultimately with Scottish

Independence we will be able to retain our nation’s wealth and get a fairer deal for hard working families, our elderly and the most vulnerable in our society. I have already made my first speech of the new parliament, focusing on local jobs. I am also leading a debate in the Scottish Parliament shortly which will focus on a long term strategy for tackling sectarianism and anti Irish racism in society-

something I will pursue in the years ahead. I have been appointed to the Health and Sport committee. Given the recent concern about the financial well being of the 98 Southern Cross Care Homes that look after 4,000 elderly residents in Scotland, I will be keen to work with the Scottish Government to do all we can to ensure older citizens have the care they need in later life. It promises to be a busy 5 years and I

will continue to help constituents on the day to day issues that matter most to them. My office can be contacted on 01412040199.Of course we can also look forward to a referendum offering our nation the opportunity provided by Independence, to transform both Glasgow and Scotland not just for the next few years but for generations to come.

I recently attended a

meeting organised by

Robroyston Community

Council that was arranged

to discuss a proposal

to develop part of the

North East of the city.

Link Housing Association

are seeking to build

47 houses and flats on

the site at Auchinairn

Road. However,

because of the council

boundary between East

Dunbartonshire and

Glasgow City, affected

residents were not made

aware of these proposals

at the planning stage.

I attended the meeting

to make the case to

Link HA that they should

reconsider their proposals

so that residents had

a proper say about

what happens in their

local community. I was

shocked by Link HA and

East Dunbartonshire’s

attitude that as far as

they were concerned,

the planning permission

had been granted and

that building could go

ahead. Over 200 local

residents who attended

the meeting disagreed.

Not a single person

living on the Glasgow

side of the boundary was

informed of what the

proposals were. How can

it be fair that because of

a mistake by an official in

a planning department,

local people are denied

their say?

I have raised this

point this week in

Parliament and have

submitted a motion

that calls for fairness

and accountability for

the public money that

is being spent here.

For affordable housing

developments to be a

success, they must have

the backing of the local

community.

There has not been

any attempt to forge a

partnership with the local

community. For Link HA

to achieve this, they must

re-consider their plans

and let local people have

their say.

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of th

e

Football Match

between Celtic and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it a

ll calms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US the general public t

o

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that w

e will not to

lerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer.

The

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. V

ictoria Crosse

s have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE –

NOTHING

LESS) th

ere is mayhem and serious in

jury

meted out for ju

st being “O

NE OF TH

EM”.

Football ri

valry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St

. Johnstone

play Kilmarnock, th

ere are players from

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Firm

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has N

othing To

Do With Football!! So what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether th

ey had it in the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors t

hinking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCO

HOL. The majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in

such a short space of tim

e

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their e

motions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “O

ld Firm” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers

in an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

he slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part o

f the

story, all o

f a sudden are construed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacce

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but w

hen

it comes to

the “Old Firm

” fun goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A

S BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in

the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Firm

” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Firm

” match.

We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Firm

” meet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cr

ash or a house

fire, would you sto

p to think...”I wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them.

If you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE A

LL DO.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

NORTHPolice and Partners Launch Antisocial Behaviour Crackdown

RECENTLY, officers from Strathclyde Police and partners from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, Glasgow Community and Safety Services, Tesco, Cube Housing Association, Glasgow Housing Association, Glasgow Life, Glasgow City Council and Councillor Mary Paris and Councillor Mohammed Razaq launched a crackdown on antisocial behaviour. Particular attention is being given to the Maryhill Corridor and the Wyndford area in response to recent consultation which highlighted local community issues around

violence, disorder, antisocial behaviour and drugs. Officers are working alongside partner agencies carrying out a range of measures from enforcement to signposting young people towards diversionary activities that are ongoing in the area. CI Tom Dickson, Area Commander, Strathclyde Police said “ We are working together with our partners to address some key issues identified by the local community as causing them some concern. Additional officers have been out on patrol in this area

alongside housing staff to challenge the behaviour of some individuals who seem intent on engaging in acts of antisocial behaviour. So far officers have stopped and searched over 200 people and seized over 100 litres of alcohol. The message is clear; this type of behaviour simply will not be tolerated.” A Policing and Partners public meeting is being held on Thursday 23 June at The Hub from 6 – 8.30pm. This is open to all members of the public who live or work in the Maryhill corridor and Wyndford area.

On 14th June 2011 officers at Saracen Police Office received a report of the loss of a quantity of controlled drugs namely diazepam and co-drydamol which occurred in the area of Woodside Health Centre. This was prescribed medication and officers are concerned that it could be dangerous if taken by anyone else without the appropriate medical guidance.Should a member of the public come across these tablets they should be handed in to Saracen Police office which is open 24 hours a day.

TOP OF THE CLASS!Awards triumph for Maryhill Housing Association development

MARYHILL Housing Association has triumphed at a major awards ceremony for its showpiece transformation of Maryhill primary school. The Association beat off stiff competition to capture the “Apartment of the Year” prize at the glittering Scottish Home Awards 2011 in Edinburgh. The accolade comes as the exciting £4.6 million development of much needed new homes nears completion. The transformation of the building is in line with the Association’s promise to deliver new homes for the local community. Nine apartments within the converted school building are being created along with 19 new homes at Viewmount Drive.

The properties are being built around the striking and well known blonde sandstone building which is “C listed” because of its architectural merit and which was bought by the Association from Glasgow City Council. The school was earmarked for closure in 2006 because of falling rolls with pupils transferred to another school nearby. Prior to work beginning, it had lain unused and boarded up. The project will see the school building transformed internally while retaining its original structure and with new properties built on either side. Commenting on the Association’s triumph, Development Manager Donna Birrell said: “This is a wonderful endorsement of the Association and the work we are doing to bring back to life one of the areas best known buildings.

“Maryhill primary school contributed greatly to the Maryhill community over the years and our plans will ensure it has a bright future delivering homes for people who need them. We are delighted it has been named Apartment of the Year at the Scottish Home Awards.” The work is being funded by Glasgow City Council through a Housing Association Grant and further supported financially by the Scottish Government. The Association has also secured additional bank funding as is normal practice in such developments. Nine of the properties will be offered as New Supply Shared Equity NSSE homes under the Scottish Government’s low cost home ownership scheme while the other 19 will be for rent.

Enterprise Zones could Revitalise Glasgow EconomyTHE SNP Government are looking at plans to create 4 Enterprise Zones in Scotland following a similar announcement by the UK Government in England.

The Scottish Government will spend the extra allocation on attracting businesses to key areas

with incentives including rates relief and easier planning regulations.

Speaking in Parliament today, Bob Doris made an impassioned case for Glasgow to be seriously considered for one of the new Enterprise Zones.

Mr Doris said:“When we look at the unemployment figures we see the four highest by Westminster Constituency are in Glasgow - three of them are in the north of the city. This problem has been allowed to develop over a long period. I think we now need to focus our economic recovery efforts in these unemployment blackspots.

“Glasgow has recently attracted investment in the green and renewables technology sector with Scottish Government support. There is enormous potential for more renewables companies to

locate here as well as businesses from other target growth sectors, creating much needed high value jobs for the area.

“I welcome Finance Minister John Swinney’s plans to create these Enterprise Zones. I will be seeking an early meeting with him and Glasgow City Council to take forward proposals for Glasgow.”

“I believe the north of Glasgow in particular could be an ideal location for inward investment and would bring real jobs to some of the most deprived areas in the country”.

MSP FERGUSON SHOWS CONSTITUENTS SOME TLCPATRICIA Ferguson MSP for Maryhill & Springburn has joined forces with breast cancer charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer to help increase breast awareness in Glasgow by taking part in the charity’s Touch Look Check campaign.Touch Look Check (or TLC) is Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s breast awareness message and encourages women to Touch, Look and Check their breasts regularly. A survey recently undertaken by the charity showed that only half of women in Scotland regularly checked their breasts.Patricia Ferguson MSP said: “Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in Scotland with over 4000 women diagnosed every year. Each year around 1000 women die from breast cancer in Scotland.“An early diagnosis of breast cancer can help save lives. This is why I am pleased to help spread Breakthrough Breast

Cancer’s Touch, Look, Check message to my constituents via my office, website, local press, and social media.”Audrey Birt, Director of Breakthrough Breast Cancer in Scotland, said: “While more women are surviving breast cancer it is vital that women stay breast aware. Our message is as simple as TLC - Touch, Look, Check. Do this by regularly

touching, looking for changes and checking anything unusual with your doctor and attending breast screening if you are over 50, as these are the best ways to identify breast cancer early. If you find any unusual changes or are worried by anything, you should talk to your GP straight away.“I am delighted that Patricia Ferguson is helping to spread this important message.”

PUPILS from Balornock Primary School have this week been enjoying meeting their counterparts in Barcelona due to a partnership between the Glasgow School and two others (one in Germany and the other in Spain). Part of the funding for the

trip came from the union Unite as one of the pupils father had approached them to sponsor the school. The kids have really enjoyed their trip taking in excursions which included visiting the Nou Camp stadium. there was a minor hiccup on the way home

as there was a baggage handlers strike (Unions Again!!!), at Gerona and the party had to be diverted to Edinburgh. Head teacher Phylis Harley would like to thank Unite and City Building for contributing to the cost of the adventure which we are assured the children really enjoyed.

PARTICK Thistle FC have announced a brand-new, three-year sponsorship deal by macb water, worth a ‘substantial’ six-figure sum to the club. Manager, Jackie McNamara announced the partnership with the Aberdeenshire-based water brand before shaking hands with macb CEO, Kenny Webster. The investment will help to financially secure the Firhill side and comes at a time that the Jags are looking to cement their reputation as Glasgow’s ‘football friendly’ club. Next season, the club will not only have support from macb but, due to its trouble-free record and well-behaved fans, they will also become a police-free ground. In addition, Firhill will continue its commitment to welcoming children under 16 for free, as well as hosting a dedicated family area and

kids zone. This is the first title sponsorship to be entered into by macb – a company that employs 61 people and sells over 10 million litres of macb across Scotland per year. macb is also the official water for nine SPL teams, including Hibs, Hearts, Dundee United and Aberdeen. “Football often gets a bad rap but Partick Thistle shows the sport at its best,” said Kenny Webster, CEO of macb’s parent company, Sangs. “The club’s a great fit with what we believe in at macb – brilliant value, family-focused and good fun too. We’re proud to become part of the team and we’re looking forward to a great season ahead.” Jackie McNamara echoed Kenny’s comments: “I am delighted that the Club secured macb water as our main sponsor. I think it’s a great brand and ties in perfectly with Thistle. Everybody at the Club is already looking forward to next season - we have what we believe is the core of a great squad and once we get the boys back in from the close season it will be heads down and hard work. They’ll need a good few bottles of macb water with the pre-season training sessions I’ve prepared.” Here’s to a very successful season for Jackie and the “Jags”. “IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”

FOLLOWING the aftermath of the

Football Match between Celtic

and

Rangers last S

unday there were

over 300 arrests with accid

ent and

emergency units filled to capacity

and

as usual when it all ca

lms down what is

being done about it.

The police

have been briefed and

de-briefed this week with high level

meetings being held in the run up to the

next encounter but given that their h

ands

are tied as to

what they can basica

lly

do it is up to US the general public t

o

get a grip of the situ

ation and put it on

the line that we will n

ot tolerate this

anti-social behaviour any longer. T

he

problem has been with us for around

110 years and during that tim

e 2 World

Wars have been fought w

ith comrades of

opposite religions la

ying down their lives

for their co

untry. Victo

ria Crosses have

been awarded to heroes of both religions

yet when it c

omes down to a football

match which at the end of th

e day results

in three points being awarded to the

winning team (NOTHING MORE – NOTHING

LESS) there is m

ayhem and serious injury

meted out for ju

st being “ONE OF TH

EM”.

Football riv

alry between teams is

normally healthy and the crazy thing is

that when, ta

ke for instance, St. Jo

hnstone

play Kilmarnock, there are players fr

om

different re

ligions in oppositio

n, there is

no need for 1000 police officers o

n duty in

fact the majority

of these type of games

police themselves.

Why then is i

t that w

hen the “Old Firm”

meet there is t

he need to have a high

alert and tension in the air fr

om early

morning till midnight and beyond? O

ne

thing is for su

re ...It Has Nothing To

Do With Football!! So what happens

now? Well fo

r a start w

e all could act

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether they had it in

the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors th

inking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCOHOL. T

he majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in such a short sp

ace of time

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their emotions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “Old Firm

” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers i

n an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just th

e slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

n of the

week would be accepted as part of th

e

story, all of a sudden are constru

ed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacceptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but when

it comes to

the “Old Firm” fu

n goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE AS BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Firm

” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Firm” m

atch. We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Firm” m

eet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cra

sh or a house

fire, would you stop to think...”I

wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them. I

f you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE ALL D

O.”

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

The club was started last year by John Reid ably assisted by Gordon Blair, Paul Rogers and Wullie McLelland and already they have three champions in the club. Young Declan Duffy (12), Christopher Donohue (18) and Ian O’Connor (22) have all recently won a variety of trophies and North Glasgow Boxing Club are delighted with their progress.

The club has classes on almost every night of the week with the young 10-15’s on Tuesdays and Thursdays (5 – 6). There is also a mixed class for males and females (6pm till 7.15pm on Tues, Wed and Thursdays) and on Fridays between 5-00pm and 6.00pm there is a further adult gents session. John Reid told the Re-Gen North “ The three lads, Declan, Christopher and Ian, are certainly heading the right way. None of them has lost a fight yet and we have very high hopes for the trio”. John continued, “ We are a non-profit making organisation and every penny

we get is ploughed back into the facilities. At this moment in time I would like to thank the ARC for the support they have given us and also Gordon, Paul and Wullie, who, without their

help it would certainly have been a struggle”. The club is always looking for new members of all ages and anyone interested in joining should go along to the ARC (downstairs at the back) in

Milton where you will be made most welcome. For a Boxing Club it certainly has a great atmosphere running throughout it and this is all down to the way the management team

run the operation. The Re-Gen North wishes North Glasgow Boxing and Fitness Club every success in the future and we look forward to reporting on further successes in the ring.
