What’s Happening Around Town?Watch the 2016 Summer Olympics Opening Ceremony LIVE on the Big Screen for FREE at the Paramount Theater Friday, August 5

Watch the 2016 Summer Olym-pics Opening Ceremony on the big screen Friday, August 5 at 7:00 p.m.! This event is free to attend and is open to the public. Concessions will be available and may be taken into the auditorium for the live broadcast.

The opening ceremony will take place in the Maracana Stadium, Rio De Janeiro. The proceedings will combine the formal ceremonial opening of this international sporting event with an artistic spectacle to showcase the host nation’s culture.

Our own 2016 U.S. Olympic Team is currently comprised of 283 athletes and is expected to reach over 500. (The names are pending approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee and will be con-firmed by July 18). Special recognition goes to Leah Smith, a rising fourth year at the University of Virginia, who quali-fied for the Olympic Games in the 400m freestyle! Way to go Leah, and good luck to all participants that are a part of Team USA. We are rooting for you!

More information:The Olympic opening ceremonies

represent the official commencement of the Olympic Games. They represent a wide variety of features and messag-es that link together local and global issues, as well as cultural similarities. The ceremonies typically start with the raising of the host country’s flag and a performance of its national anthem.

The traditional part of the ceremo-nies starts with a “Parade of Nations,” during which most participating ath-letes march into the stadium, country by country. For every Opening Cere-mony, each host country has a theme. During the “Parade of Nations” the

host country’s goal is to represent their cultural identity and to show the world their place in society.

Watch the flames of the Olympic Torch come to life as we celebrate to-gether the start of the Summer Olym-pics 2016!

About The Paramount TheaterThe 1,040 seat Paramount Theater

of Charlottesville has been a local land-mark since 1931. After holding a prom-inent place in our community for de-cades, The Paramount closed in 1974 as business in downtown faded. After an extensive restoration, the fully ren-ovated Paramount Theater re-opened in 2004. As we approach ten years since reopening, The Paramount has now served hundreds of thousands of Cen-tral Virginians and attracted visitors from far and wide. Some of the world’s most celebrated artists have graced its stage. The tally of schoolchildren who have attended educational programs is over 127,000!

As a nonprofit performing arts cen-ter, our mission is to:• Offer the Central Virginia commu-

nity a wide range of arts, education, and entertainment events with the goal of reaching diverse audiences and enriching our community

• Present educational programs forschool-age children, teens, college students, and the community at large

• Make our facilities and resourcesavailable for use by charitable, arts, community, and other organizations and individuals for presentation of their performances and eventsThe Paramount Theater is gener-

ously supported by many donors, cor-porations and organizations. We thank our Paramount Producers Club Spon-sors for their generous support.

ATU

Erin Freeman re-members the first time she was sur-prised by live clas-sical music. It was the first time she ever heard any. The

artistic director of the Winter-green Summer Music Festival up at the Wintergreen Resort in Nelson County was only six when her parents took her to an Atlanta Symphony Orchestra concert. “I think the expecta-tion was to have a nice evening with some Christmas music with an orchestra and chorus,” Freeman says today. “But for me the thing that connected most was a piece by Bach [the Dona Nobis Pacem from the B-Minor Mass] because of the way it just grew from one little kernel all the way to the end. I didn’t ex-pect to be blown away by some-thing so serious, so classical. There was something so human and uplifting about it, that that moment stuck with me as being the moment that I started to love this music.”

Perhaps the guy who broke tradition by breaking the au-dience’s silent concentration with an exhilarated “woo-hoo!” last year, during a Wintergreen Festival Orchestra performance of Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony, was experiencing that same sense of surprise and wonder that a musical form too often considered staid and stuffy could be so downright excit-ing. For sure there will be many such “aha!” moments up on the mountain this summer from July 9 through Au-gust 7, as Freeman in her second season and the Festival in its 21st explore the theme “Expect the Unexpected!” with full orchestra concerts and intimate re-citals, seminars and master classes, film showings and pop-up performances and even a tribute to Broadway.

The program that opens the Festival on Sat-urday, July 9 at 5:00 p.m. will include a reception, a mid-concert auction, des-sert out under the stars, and a birthday surprise for someone Wintergreen holds dear. Musically the evening will preview the weeks ahead, as the or-chestra plays selections by Mozart and longtime Win-tergreen composer-in-resi-dence Michael White.

For “If It Ain’t Baroque!” on Saturday, July 16 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 17 at 3:00 p.m., conductor and Grammy-nominated com-poser Julian Wachner will lead the orchestra through works by Bach, Handel, Biber, and Purcell, plus his own Chamber Symphony, featuring a pretty unex-pected instrument—a ma-rimba.

Eleven different instru-ments will take solo turns during “What Was Haydn Hiding,” conducted by Russian maestro Victor Yampolsky on Saturday, July 23 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 24 at 3:00 p.m. The program will

open with the “Concerto for Seven Winds” by 20th century Swiss com-poser Frank Martin, continue with the beloved “Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis” by Vaughan Williams, and conclude with the final symphony (No. 104, “London”) of Franz Joseph Haydn. We might expect the music of a 17th and early 18th century composer to be far removed from our 21st cen-tury lives, Freeman says, but “Haydn is famous for doing all sorts of things we wouldn’t expect to hear in classical music. He can throw in a joke just as good as our comedians today.”

As the wife of one great composer (Robert Schumann), the close friend and inspiration to another (Johannes Brahms), and a noted pianist and teach-er in her own right, Clara Schumann is an important figure in classical music history. But to Freeman she’s also a case of “what if?” Her piano sonata is “far beyond what a teenage composer should be able to do,” Freeman says. “It makes one wonder what might have been possible had she been encouraged like the male composers of her time.”

Freeman will conduct Schumann’s Pi-ano Concerto along with a world pre-miere by soprano Gilda Lyons, in “Well Behaved Women Seldom Make Histo-ry,” Saturday, July 30 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 31 at 3:00. She let fans on Facebook choose between Beethoven’s 2nd and 8th symphonies to conclude the program. They chose the 8th.

“Majesty in All Its Forms,” on Satur-day, August 6 at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, August 7 at 3:00 p.m., marks the return of Laura Jackson, who stepped in for an ailing fellow conductor last year on just 48-hours’ notice. “The grandeur and sweep of Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony will be made even more special in the setting of the magnificent Blue Ridge

Mountains,” Jackson says, while Anna Clyne’s “intimate and very beautiful” Prince of Clouds will showcase two virtuosi Wintergreen violinists against a background of strings. Jackson calls Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, the final work on the program, “a thrill-ing journey that begins with a somber ‘fate’ motive and resolves in triumph after a thrilling and dramatic journey.”

Anyone who’s heard Tchaikovsky’s Fourth knows the emotive power of a symphony orchestra.

The surprise for some is that a small ensemble can be no less stirring. The Festival’s mid-week offerings, some presented in atypical spaces, “are unique opportunities to hear music making at its most personal and virtu-osic,” Freeman says. “I don’t think in our day to day lives we take a moment to have this sort of intimate, personal connection with music and so I would encourage people to bust out of the weekend mold and come up on a Tues-day or Thursday night as well.”

Freeman invited Justin Alexander and a few fellow percussionists, on Thursday, August 4 at 7:30 p.m., “to do a lot of lyrical, sort of personal pieces so that people can hear a different as-

RE pect of the percussion than they usual-

ly hear.” She invited bassoonist Joseph Kluesener to come on Wednesday, Au-gust 3 at 2:00 p.m. to play André Pre-vin’s Bassoon Sonata, a piece he calls “the handsome chameleon of the bas-soon repertoire.” In just one half hour it ranges from the familiar sounds of jazz, gospel, blues, theater and film music to the bracing strains of the Sec-ond Viennese school.

Sometimes one surprise leads to another. Freeman remembers a fami-ly-friendly Christmas concert she con-ducted early in her career when the mechanics of the stage pit malfunc-tioned. “It messed everything up; the dancers couldn’t come up and Santa couldn’t leave, so I had to improvise onstage.” Out in the audience she no-ticed a young man she’d once taught, a promising student who had gone on to study the bass at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music, one of the top con-servatories in the country. “So I said ‘OK, I’ll bring him up onstage,’” she says today. “Out of this terrible set of technical happenstances I got to inter-view this incredibly engaging student for all of the young kids out there, and they got to see someone who was po-tentially a role model for them.” The

student was Joseph Conyers, now assis-tant principal bassist of the Philadel-phia Orchestra. Conyers will give a bass recital (it’s not odd, it’s unexpected) on Thursday, July 28 at 7:30 p.m., playing works created for cello, viola da gamba,

and (with pianist Peter Marshall) for bass and piano.

The “Where the Wild Things Are” program at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 10 is the first of five hour-long, Coffee Concerts offering chamber music in an

informal atmosphere. After a perfor-mance of children’s tales set to music and narrated by Freeman, kids will en-joy an instrument petting zoo, where they can draw a bow across a string or blow through a trumpet mouthpiece, learning how music is made and may-be cultivating an interest in making it themselves.

Grown-ups can deepen their own understanding and appreciation of the art form during the Festival’s in-depth morning seminars on specific compos-ers, compositions and aspects of mu-sic-making. From 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., Monday July 11 through Friday, July 15, Juilliard professor and Win-tergreen favorite Michael White will explore the life and works of J.S. Bach, one of music’s greatest masters. In Week Two he’ll turn his attention to Haydn, a composer, in Freeman’s words, “famous for taking a musical phrase and turn-ing it around unexpectedly, or putting in a joke, of doing all sorts of things to throw us off guard.”

In Week Three Freeman will cele-brate women in music and the arts—women like Clara Schumann, Alma Mahler and Marian Anderson, and like Nadia Boulanger, “the unexpected link between Stravinsky and Quincy Jones.” Sometimes mistaken as mere novelties,

Asheville’s three-man, one-woman band River Whyless will summon the past and sound like the future in the Wild Wednesday show on July 20.

they in fact “had a huge impact on the way we listen to and feel classical mu-sic.” In Week Four a violinist, an attor-ney, and an art historian will take on a more amorphous subject, theft—the theft of artworks and musical instru-ments, and the “theft” (“good artists copy, great artists steal,” as Picasso put it) of intellectual property.

Wild Wednesdays are “pop” days at the Festival, the days for Americana and the Great American Songbook, gyspy jazz and Motown soul—the time to kick back, or jump up and dance. The series kicks off on July 13 at 7:30 p.m. with baritone Bob McDonald’s tribute to the Great White Way, focus-ing on Broadway great John Raitt (fa-ther of singer Bonnie Raitt).

“Raitt was the baritone during what’s thought of as the Golden Age of Broadway,” Mc-Donald says. “He cre-ated the role of Billy Bigelow in Carousel and went on to enjoy a long career in which he sang virtually ev-ery famous Broadway baritone role, from Curly in Oklahoma to Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha and the lead in The Pa-jama Game, another role he created. This gives me a lot to work from for a tribute show, because basically any song I might want to sing from Broadway, John Raitt has sung!”

“Raitt was different than the singers who came before him. He was a tall, masculine guy with a powerful voice who could fill a house with his voice without the help of the mics that are used in many Broadway theatres today. As a singer who was trained to sing that way too, that’s part of why I ad-mire him so much.”

Asheville’s three-man, one-woman band River Whyless writes tunes evoc-ative of traditional English folk music, but layers them with smart pop lyrics and fresh sonic textures. They’ll sum-mon the past and sound like the future in the Wild Wednesday show on July 20.

Hotclub de Biglick will open Wild Wednesday on August 3, setting the mood for George Gershwin expert Laura Jackson to conduct the origi-nal jazz band version of Rhapsody in Blue. The jazz-and-classical blending composition may sound utterly natu-ral to us now, but its genesis in 1924, Freeman observes, “ is one of the un-expected stories in classical music,” the story of how the composer “opened the newspaper with his brother and found out he was premiering a brand new pi-ano concerto in a handful of weeks.” It was on a train ride, Gershwin claimed, with “its steely rhythms, its rattle-ty bang, that is so often so stimulating to a composer,” that he “suddenly heard, and even saw on paper, the complete construction of the Rhapsody, from beginning to end.”

All this creativity draws a discern-ing crowd, and Nelson County enjoys the attention. Speaking as a “Nelso-nian,” REALTOR® Julie Bendle says, “the Festival is a wonderful chance to show newcomers how beautiful our county is and how much we have to of-fer for either full time residents or va-cationers. Our little ‘rural’ county is a lovely and sophisticated jewel. The only thing better than the stunning scenery is the plethora of delightful, kind and eclectic people that live, work and play here.”

“The Wintergreen audience is one of my favorites,” Freeman says, in a simi-lar vein. “They’re so curious. They re-ally want to hear one more layer in the music than they heard the day before. They know that music, ultimately, is the grand human experience.” n

Many academic studies emphasize the impor-tance of music in our lives. Harvard psychol-

ogist Howard Gardner stated years ago that musical intelligence is equal in importance to logical/mathemati-cal intelligence, linguistic intelligence, spatial intelligence, and other sorts of competent awareness in creating a well-rounded individual.

“We saw so much music when we traveled overseas,” declares Charlottesville musician Estela Knott who, with her husband David, oper-ates Blue Ridge Music Together ®, a program of teaching music to the very young. “Music is a universal language, but when we returned home, we found people who had trouble being comfort-able singing or playing an instrument.”

She sees this as very sad. “Everyone is born with the ability to be musical, but all too often this ability isn’t nurtured.”

Start YoungEven before children reach school,

it’s important to have music in their lives. “After we returned from overseas,” Knott recalls, “a friend suggested we look into early childhood musical edu-cation. We learned how important it is to be immersed in a musical situation and we’ve been doing music here for go-ing on nine years with mixed-age classes from birth to five years.” She explains that classes offered in several locations around Charlottesville include parents and are not performance oriented. “The classes are a chance for parents to be musical with children,” she says.

Another opportunity is Mainly Mu-sic, a program started in New Zealand for youngsters from birth to five years to enjoy music and movement. Lau-ren Thompson, who sings with her husband and children and also at her church, is involved with this program. “We started Mainly Music at Trini-ty Presbyterian Church probably ten

years ago,” she says. “We provide a time for kids, parents, nannies or other caregivers to connect with about 30 minutes of music.

“One of our mis-sions,” Thompson con-tinues, “is to expand the program in Charlottesville to neighborhoods where English isn’t the first lan-guage.”

Music in the home is very important, Thompson adds, noting that there are a number of Mainly Mu-sic CDs to take home. “We always have music in the car,” she says. There are also lots of sing-along CDs of American folk music that can teach children familiar songs to sing with people of all ages. An inexpensive karaoke machine is another sure way to get youngsters singing for fun.

Music for children in the community

In many locales, the school system offers music education. For example, the Charlottesville City Schools have a commitment to a strong musical foundation starting with fifth-graders who are expected to join band, choir, or orchestra, taking a music class once or twice a week. These musical groups present school concerts and also perform

in the community. In 2014, for instance, the CHS band

was invited to perform at Vir-ginia’s gubernatorial parade

and the CHS orchestra has performed in France. In 2015, Venable Elementary School

provided a guest choir when Grammy Award-winners Wayne Shorter and Esperan-za Spalding performed at the

Paramount Theater. The Albemarle County Fine

Arts Academy—part of the pub-lic school system—offers mid-dle and high school students a fee-based summer program

of various fields of art including jazz studies and music production. An integrated arts program designed for rising 4th through 6th graders com-bines art, music, and storytelling.

The Nelson County Community Or-chestra offers hands-on musical experi-ence for third to fifth grade students—whether in public or private school or homeschoolers—through small group, after-school classes in several schools during the school year, as well as a week-long Summer Violin Camp.

Where do you find music?“Expose your children to live mu-

sic,” encourages Knott of Blue Ridge Music Together®. ”Charlottesville is full of amazing musicians.”

Mainly Music’s Thompson rec-ommends PNOC (pronounced “pea-knock”), the Parenting Network of Charlottesville, as an online forum for families (with minor kids of all ages at home). It’s a place to exchange ideas and perhaps learn about music events.

The Jefferson-Madison Region-al Library—which encompasses Charlottesville plus Albemarle, Greene, Louisa, and Nelson counties—offers music in some form at many of its nine member libraries. Central Branch, for example, offers Music on the Steps at noon on summer Fridays, Romp & Stomp sessions for two-to-five-year-olds on various days and Mother Goose Time for ages six months to two years.

This summer, most branches are offering at least one performance by Young Audiences of Virginia—the leading provider of quality arts-in-ed-ucation programming in our Com-monwealth. For more information on library activities, visit www.jmrl.org.

Some wineries and breweries offer musical events that are suitable for families, especially during the summer. Some places have food vendors while others invite you to bring a picnic and even supply grills for barbecuing. Check event listings at: www.Monticel-loWineTrail.com.

Find more music listings in the Dai-ly Progress, Cville Weekly, and various online calendars which cover a variety of music events for families. Just one example from the visitors bureau on-line calendar at www.VisitCharlottes-ville.org is Charlottesville’s Parks and Recreation Department’s Sunday Sun-downs which include free swimming, music, games, and a picnic. n

A former teacher of guitar and banjo, Mari-lyn Pribus now sings with the Charlottesville Women’s Choir, the Charlottesville Thresh-old Choir, and plays guitar with a small group entertaining at local nursing homes and memory care facilities.
