You arrive at work at 7:00 am and pull on your overalls before reporting to the servicing desk for your first task, which is to replace a landing gear light on one airplane. You complete the aircraft maintenance documentation, obtain the proper tools (including a voltmeter) and report to your 1. _________________, who will direct you to the aircraft.

Upon arrival you confirm that the landing gear 2. __________________ is not working. You perform tests using a voltmeter to verify that twelve volts is going to the light, and then turn the power off and install a new light. You do an operational test which proves successful—well done! You now return to the service desk to complete the papers and advise your supervisor that the landing gear light is working.

Your next job is to repair the VHF communication system located in the 3. __________________ on the airplane. After several tests using a frequency of 118.8 MHz to determine if you are receiving communication from ground control, you replace the black box with a new VHF 4. ________________ receiver. And your final checks using four different frequencies prove to be successful! With two jobs complete, you take a 15-minute break and head over to human resources to ask a question about your employee benefits. Upon return to the servicing desk you learn that your next job involves a 5. __________________ that will require a significant amount of your time so you take an early lunch.

After lunch you learn that your task is to perform maintenance on an aircraft autopilot system. You first do a comprehensive review of the aircraft journey logbook, which examines work carried out on the 6. __________________ system. You then troubleshoot the system and its components, and remove some components to reinstall new ones. You sign off on your completion of this work and prepare the airplane for flight to test the autopilot system. You board the plane with the pilots and for the first 15 minutes of the flight the autopilot is operational; however, the pilot soon informs you that the autopilot computer is offline. You go to the avionics bay, located behind the cockpit, and notice that one wire is slightly out of place from the connector. You push the wire back to the connector and the pilot informs you that the system is working. You continue your flight and fix the loose wire after landing at the airport. Now that this task is complete, you return to the servicing desk, complete the paper documentation, and advise your supervisor that the autopilot system is now in working order.

With your final task of the day completed, you return your tools, remove your coveralls, and head home for the day!

You and the dental hygienist arrive at 7:30 am to oblige a newscaster who can’t take time off work later in the day. She wants the partial plate she’s been wearing for years replaced with an implant: a false 1. __________________ planted right in her jaw. On previous visits, you made molds of her mouth and took x-rays of her jaw. The lab designed the new tooth and made it from the best materials available. You’ve already done the difficult work of setting the anchor in her jawbone.

This morning she’s nervous. You tell her exactly what you’re going to do, that the “freezing” injection will only hurt a little, and that she’ll be a bit sore later. You do your best to put her at ease and show her the new tooth. The hygienist holds her hand while you quickly do the 2. _________________. You hate hurting people, but sometimes it’s unavoidable, especially when you work on front teeth.

When the shot takes effect, you expose the anchor in her jawbone, set the new tooth in, sew a couple of tiny stitches in her 3. ____________________, clean her mouth, and hand her a mirror. She loves it! You write a prescription for painkillers, and tell her to look forward to speaking more clearly and eating and drinking without a plastic plate in her mouth.

The receptionist came in at 8:30 am while you were working and now there’s a steady stream of patients for you and the hygienist. You do fillings and 4. ____________________ all morning, moving back and forth between the two treatment rooms. Each time, he carefully sterilizes the drills and grinders for cleaning 5. _______________ and shaping new fillings.

You eat a quick lunch, do a few more check-ups, then meet a new patient—a two-year-old boy who hops up in the chair after you replace his father’s old filling. You have seen babies with teeth rotted from too much candy, but his tiny teeth look like they’re still perfect. You check them for cavities, give him a new 6. _____________________, and show him how to use it. You want him to have a good feeling about his teeth and about dentists. With good nutrition and proper care, he might never have a cavity in his life. You have several patients in their twenties whose teeth are as perfect as this little boy’s. Which reminds you—it’s time to take your own not-so-perfect teeth to your dentist!

Computer Support Person

You and your co-worker are embarking on several days in the field. The agency you work for has offices around the state, and since the recent reorganization, each office is updating its computer 1. ___________—or rather, you are! It’s ok, though. The opportunity to get out of the central office and actu-ally meet some of the people you talk to regularly is fun. Once the van is loaded with servers, towers, 2. _____________, accessories, and the new software packages, you are ready to leave.

The first office is just about an hour away, so you and Greg have a chance to discuss the job at hand. Often, the people being ‘upgraded’ are not too happy about it; their workday is disturbed, they don’t understand the new systems, email gets lost, and they generally find 3. ____________ a pain. You, on the other hand, love to learn about new systems. You have always loved detective shows, and this job offers you the chance to solve all kinds of mysteries!

Once on site, you meet with the staff to give them a heads-up. First you will be replacing the existing server, but before getting to that you will need everyone to back up their files. Nobody is happy when files get lost. Greg volunteers to help those who are not familiar with the back-up system and heads off to the first set of cubicles. You follow the manager to the server and go over the differences with her. After setting up your laptop and connecting to the main server at the central office, you begin using an automated 4. ____________ program to detect and report any viruses or unapproved software. By noon, all desktops have been backed up. The manager orders pizza for all.

After lunch, you work through replacing the server. You go to each 5. ____________ station to check the network connections and update the software. It’s great to have a partner like Greg who likes the work as much as you do. Everyone is pretty cooperative, which isn’t a surprise. You have spoken to most of them while working on the helpdesk at the central office and they appreciate your patience. By late afternoon, about half of the machines are up and working again. Tomorrow you will finish the 6. _____________, and in the afternoon conduct a training session on the new email system. You and Greg worked together to update your old training materials before going on the road, and you are anxious to evaluate them. Now, however, you are ready for the drive home and dinner!

Event Planner

It’s Monday morning and as a new week begins you start working on a brand new project. Your firm accepted a contract on Friday, and the manager would like you to 1. _______________ this project.

A large Chicago-based technologies company will be celebrating its 25th year in business. This successful company wishes to celebrate this important event with the employees as well as the community who stood behind them in tough times. So you start writing ideas down on a piece of paper. You could host an open house, but it would have to be a special open house because they have had them before. This will not do it. Perhaps if you invite all employees and their families as well as the entire community to a special exhibition inside the work facility where they could actually see the company’s progression over the past 25 years? You have access to tons of pictures and video footage which could be very helpful in creating a “multi-sense” event. Yes! A visitor route through the production, maintenance, engineering, and technical services departments filled with historical facts and figures, hands-on experiences, and visual delights! The tour could be offered at night and you could finish it off with fireworks! Everyone enjoys fireworks, little kids and big ones too!

You think this kind of 2. _______________ would meet the client’s requirements and 3. _______________, so you get busy on the phone. You call the municipal library and set up an appointment on Wednesday to go through the archives and see what you can find about the company’s construction and first production in the ‘80s. Then you call Fireworks Concepts, a pyrotechnic production company, and set up an 4. ________________ with the project manager to discuss a concept. You hope the costs will be within the client’s 5. ________________.

You are so enthusiastic about the whole thing, it’s almost 1:00 pm and you haven’t had lunch yet. You walk to a park nearby, grabbing a sandwich and vegetable juice on your way, and enjoy the sun while eating.

After returning to the office, you write more ideas down. You’re very positive about what you have so far, but you need something more specific for the employees—a recognition present or event—and you also have to come up with a more formal ceremony for political and community leaders. The phone doesn’t stop ringing and it makes it hard to concentrate and be creative. Other customers are calling to 6. _______________ on their events, so you put this new project aside for now. You have to go and approve a room set-up at a convention center anyway, so you head over there and that will be enough for today. Tomorrow is another day!

It’s mid-afternoon and you are starting the evening shift at a well-known plastic bottle factory. You pull on your coveralls and as you zip up, you glance at the clock. It’s 7:00 am: time to start your shift at the finishing booth. It can be a messy job, so you pull on a cap to cover your hair. You will meet with your supervisor first thing to review the priority projects and discuss what will be needed to get the projects underway.

You start by 1. ___________________ formulas for the stains and materials to be used and set up your workbench. The stains and chemicals you use every day are always safely locked away in fire proof cabinets. Most wood finishes are classified as “2. ___________________ goods” and can be prone to explosion or fire. You’ve been thoroughly trained in safety procedures and you make sure to know as much as you can about the 3. ___________________ you are using. Safety is a priority for your compa-ny, and that’s why you’re on the safety committee. Not only is safety important in the finishing area, but so is environmental compliance. Your finishing booth is well-ventilated, but you must control emissions and deal with the recovery and recycling of chemicals to comply with local 4. ___________________ regulations.

Today you are working on a production run of maple bedroom furniture. The first dresser arrives on the rollers. You carefully inspect the surface for any imperfections by running your hand over it. You see small scratches and gently rub them out with a fine grit of sandpaper. Then you remove all the dust from the dresser prior to moving it to the finishing room. You start with the main body of the dresser and put it in the spray booth. You check all of your equipment, including the spray gun, to ensure everything is clean and in good working order. Spray guns are expensive precision tools, and it is important to maintain them to ensure a good quality application of finish to your product. You put on your goggles, respirator, and rubber gloves: your personal protective equipment. You start the air compressor and pick up your 5. ___________________. You spray a small test patch and adjust the gun so it’s just right. Using a spray gun is more an art than a science and you have a natural talent for spraying, which has allowed you to excel at your job. You move to the dresser and start with confident, even strokes, overlapping each stroke and moving down the piece to create uniform 6. ___________________ and a smooth fin-ish. This is only the first layer. Once you are done all the layers of finish, this dresser will really shine like a gem. Customers will choose this piece based on the quality of the finish.

After lunch in the cafeteria, your afternoon continues like your morning. You enjoy the constant chal-lenge of working with new designs, customer requirements, finishes, and techniques. You can always learn something new in this job, and one day you can even be supervisor of the department. As you start to clean up, you look around and are very pleased with the results you see at the end of the day.

Winemaker

What could be better than waking up to the sounds of birds, a cloudless sky, and moderate tempera-ture? It is the beginning of the grape growing season; you are in charge. You spent the last few months enhancing the soil with environmentally sound products and have been on the lookout for signs of pests attacking your vines. Today, you will be 1. __________________ some of the vines you ordered to their newly prepared field. You have high hopes for these new vines, which are supposed to be disease resistant and highly productive.

After a hearty breakfast, you go to the 2. __________________ and meet with your work crew. Some of them are new to the industry, and you go over general instructions about how to handle the vines, what signs of infection to look for, and the types of fertilizer you use. Once at the field, you spend most of the morning planting your new stock with the crew. You examine the 3. __________________ and take some samples for testing in the lab later. If anything is wrong with its chemical balance, now is the time to find out. As you plant, you visualize what this same field will look like at harvest time.

You call your crew in to lunch before noon; you want to stop planting before the heat of the day. Over lunch you talk about the shortage of qualified workers and encourage some of the crew to look into training programs that would make them more knowledgeable. You are very willing to share your knowledge with the people who work with you, but you are too busy to give them all the information they will need to move up.

After lunch, you go to your small office to record the morning’s planting activities. It is important to keep detailed notes; so often you have avoided mistakes by going over the previous year’s records. You also set up the soil samples for testing. Then it is time to go back outside to one of the older fields where you will begin 4. __________________ last year’s vines. You are working with some new trellis-ing techniques this year, hoping to grow more grapes in less space.

You talk about the timing of this year’s harvest and the changing weather patterns that affect your grapes. You are both worried about having enough workers when the harvest does happen and agree to approach the owner with a 6. __________________ plan. Marine Biologist

You are currently working on a project to study the effects of fishing practices on 1. __________________ ecosystems. Today you will be on deck a 224-foot ship, operating a remote-controlled submersible to see what is happening in the undersea waters off the edge of the continental shelf between the Gully and the Laurentian Channel, near Nova Scotia, Canada. It’s cold and rainy, but you are very excited about the mission. Your research has already shown the dangerous impact some fishing practices have on deep-sea coral ecosystems. These ecosystems are unique and provide shelter for certain kinds of com-mercial fish, and documenting their economic importance may help in the regulation of fishing practices.

As soon as it is light enough, you and the rest of the team launch the refrigerator-sized 2. __________________ to relay live-time videos and take samples (or bottom grabs, as they are often called). As you watch the first stream of video shots, you see signs of damage to a patch of coral. The damaged coral is crushed and lifeless compared to the healthy habitat you found yesterday. It could be the result of 3. __________________, a fishing practice using large nets that are dragged to catch groundfish. You careful-ly note the location so that you can check whether commercial bottom fishing has occurred in this area.

Unfortunately, by noon the sub has to be retrieved because it is being buffeted by strong cur-rents and is having trouble staying on the bottom. That’s ok, now you can take some of the samples into the lab and study them. During the course of this month-long cruise, you have found a lot of life, including fascinating samples of 4. __________________. And you are pret-ty sure that the sea slug you photographed yesterday is a species that has not been seen before.

In the lab you use a 5. __________________ to examine the tiny invertebrate organisms that the sub retrieved from the bottom. You are able to identify and categorize five different spe-cies. With the advanced equipment available on this specialized research vessel, you are able to photograph the slides before you do more in-depth chemical analysis. After transcribing your deckside notes, you clean the lab and carefully stow the fragile equipment. Tomorrow you get to dive, and you need to check your 6. __________________ before turning in for the night.

Plasterer

It’s 5:00 am and time to get up. You like to get to work by 6:00 am so that you can work before it gets too hot! The job you are on now is not an easy one (nor is the homeowner), but it is in a neighborhood that could supply you with work for quite some time if you satisfy your client. Unfortunately, you are charged with the task of cleaning up someone else’s mistakes. The people who installed the windows for this 1. __________________ job were not at all familiar with the complexities of stucco and left you the mess!

Today you will be breaking away the existing 2. __________________ and preparing the surface for a new layer. Using an air chisel, you break the stucco away and ensure that the building paper is meshed properly with the window flashing paper. If it’s not, the water will not drain and could cause mold and other damage. You work on one window at a time and by noon have reached the French doors.

Meeting with the construction manager at lunch, you discuss the choices of 3. __________________ available for this home. Often you recommend a blend of Portland cement, sand, and lime. You agree to create several test panels of different tints for the homeowners to choose the color they want. This will take a while because the color often changes as it cures.

Back on site, you return to the window project, applying 4. __________________ to all the cracks in the building paper. Some gaps are too big, and you need to re-flash them. Thank goodness your next job is new construction, not a remodel! You check the supplies that were delivered by the home center and find that the wire mesh they sent is wrong; you ordered a much finer mesh to hold the basecoat. You pack it up and head out to exchange it.

You work for a while longer, completing the siliconing and replacing the building paper where needed. Then you pack up your tools, move the air compressor into the garage, and drive home where you can do some inside work during the hottest time of the day. You begin to build the test panels in your shop. After building the frame, you attach the wire lath on which you will apply the scratch coat. Two more coats, brown and tinted, will need to be applied and then 5. __________________ before this panel is finished.

The homeowner has some projects for which he would like you to provide an 6. __________________. You agree to look over the blueprints and specs this evening and get back to him by the end of the week.

Recording Engineer

It’s special workday today. Instead of going into the studio this afternoon, you’re booked on the mobile unit to record a rock concert for 1. _________________ this weekend. So you arrive at the concert hall a few hours before the evening show.

Working outside the studio can be problematic, but tonight’s producer is a good organizer, so you’re not worried. The technicians have worked all day, laying cables and setting up sound gear. Now cords from every amplifier and 2. __________________ on stage run into the “snakes” that lead to your mixing board. The board is almost as big as a dinner table, and is covered with dials and sliders. It probably looks confusing to most people, but you know what every single button does, and you often feel the most comfortable in front of your mixing board.

This morning, the performers came in for 3. ___________________ with another engineer. She left you notes on the board’s setup, and on what to expect. You settle into your chair between the mixing board and the recorder, and go over the entire board, making sure it’s still set up as the diagram indicates. You feel the buzz of excitement close to show time as the audience enters the hall. Your concert experience will be more focused than theirs. It all comes through your 4. ___________________ in rich detail.

Once the performers begin, you use the dials and sliders on your mixing board to control the sound levels and balance of the instruments and vocalists, before they’re fed to the digital audio-tape recorder. You work almost without looking; you know the mixing board so well. Your 5. ____________ is worth many thousands of dollars, so you’re happier when it’s safe in the studio, but recording live concerts is much more exciting than studio work. Of course, there can be problems that make the work a real challenge. Sometimes performers mess up, and their mistakes go on tape. There’s nothing you can do about that. Also, in a concert setting, you can’t isolate the drummer to keep the drum sounds from leaking into the 6. _____________________ microphones like you can in a sound studio.

But tonight the band does a great job, and you capture their performance forever on tape. You hope the performers decide to produce an album of the live concert. The recording of the sound is so crisp and clear, it might give you a chance to win your first award!

Construction Manager

You’re on the go at 6:00 am. First stop: the custom-designed house where some of your 1. _____________ are finishing up a 3-month project. The painters are busy outside, but the finish carpenter is sitting on her sawhorse, eating an apple. She needs to measure 2. ______________________ fixtures before starting the finish work in the hot tub room, but the fixtures haven’t been delivered yet. It’s another example of an ongoing problem with this job. Practically every fixture and fitting is special-ordered or imported, and the owner and the architect are always on-site making changes. This has meant countless holdups and a lot of expensive downtime. You make a note to bring up the issue again at your landscaping meeting with the owner and the architect this afternoon.

Next, you go to the 3. __________________ company and order the lumber and hardware for the public housing contract you’ve just started, carefully explaining what you want and insisting on timely deliveries. You must manage this job efficiently to make back some of the money you’ve lost on the big house. Because the order is so large, you wrangle a big discount, which will help your bank account.

Then you move on to the public housing site and spend an hour with the site supervisor. He’ll oversee pouring the concrete 4. _____________________ for two houses this afternoon—a big job that has to be done to exacting standards. Normally you would handle this, but it’s time to give this worker more responsibility. Finding good people and giving them the chance to learn new skills is one of the best parts of your job. It pays off, too. The more they can handle, the more 5. ____________________ you can accept.

You have lunch in a small restaurant while reviewing the list on your clipboard. Afterwards, you do your banking and then head to the office for an hour to do the payroll and checks for tomorrow and work on the materials estimates for a bid on a community health clinic project. Then it’s more errands. You pick up a generator from the rental company, stop by city hall to collect building 6. _______________, and arrange the water hook-up for the new house.

You arrive back at the house after the owner and architect, parking your pickup behind a BMW and a Cadillac. The new paint job on the house is glowing in the setting sun and looks really great. This job has its ups and downs, but you will always be proud to say you built that beautiful house.

Agent

You got home late last night because you were at a performance checking out some new talent. Looking for potential clients is a big part of your job; your livelihood depends on it. Luckily, your first appoint-ment this morning isn’t until 10:00 am. You grab your laptop so that you can view some performance 1. _____________ that a colleague has forwarded to you and head to the office.

Your first appointment is with a client whose show has closed prematurely. She needs some help col-lecting payment from the 2. _____________, wants to go over her finances with you, and needs to iden-tify some opportunities for auditions. You review her file and check out the trade papers for potential acting “gigs.”

She is right on time, which is not always the experience you have with performance artists. While she is there, you call the producer of the play that has just ended and negotiate a payment schedule that will serve both parties. Your client then asks you to investigate the possibility of auditioning at one of the “indie” movie studios. She’s heard rumors about a new 3. _______________ that sounds interesting and would like you to promote her to the studio. If she could just get her hands on a 4. _____________, she is sure she could make the cut.

You bring up the question of her finances and she is relieved to go over them with you. Pointing out that she might need to find some alternate work for a while does not make her happy, but she agrees with you. Since acting roles can be few and far between for some performers, she’s been in this situation before. When she leaves, you put a call in to the studio in question and leave a message for the director. Hopefully, you will have good news to deliver soon.

You have a chance to view the performance videos before heading out to have lunch with a potential client. He is not satisfied with his current agent and is looking for someone with more 5. _____________ and creativity. Now it’s time to sell yourself! Armed with a list of current clients and some sample con-tracts, you lock up the office and walk to the restaurant.

After lunch, you head north to inspect an outdoor amphitheater where another client will be perform-ing tomorrow. Sometimes the facilities do not live up to what was promised, and this performer needs very specialized equipment. Today, however, proves to be lucky for both you and your client. The setting is beautiful, the 6. _____________ divine, and the technical crew is prepared. You can sleep soundly tonight!

As you are getting ready for work, you mentally review your schedule for the day. It’s a little unusual, as you will leave tomorrow for a week-long conference where you will be presenting your latest re-search on 1. ________________ and the teenage mind. Your first client is a 12-year-old girl who has compromised 2. ________________ and whose parents worry that she is a candidate for an eating disorder. Correctional Officer

It’s Monday morning, and you are back on the day shift. At your facility, the correctional officers rotate shifts in three-month segments; you just finished three months on the “graveyard” shift. You do get used to the hours, but it does not allow you to work with the 1. ______________. Now that you will be work-ing days, you can continue the life skills classes you initiated for those getting ready to leave.

You arrive at 6:30 am in order to go over the previous night’s log and catch up with the overnight crew. Everything seems in order, so you head off to the kitchen to supervise the cooking crew. One of the prep cooks is missing. You 2. _____________ one of the other correctional officers to check his cell, get him up if he’s still sleeping, and remind him of his duties. Kitchen duty is not a bad assignment—the facil-ity is lucky to have an inmate who graduated from a culinary arts school and ran his own restaurant for a time. He’s a pretty nice guy and is interested in helping other inmates learn 3. ______________ that could land them jobs when they get out. Only trustworthy inmates qualify to work in the kitchen, since there are some pretty sharp knives available!

By mid-morning, you are ready for class. You have a group of five inmates who will be leaving the facil-ity in about six weeks. They will be placed in 4. ______________ housing, but will need to find jobs and fit back into society. Unfortunately, you see many men returning to prison again and again. Your new transition program is being considered for other facilities, and you are committed to making it work. Your “students” arrive and you lead a group discussion about what they want to do once they leave. One will soon be licensed as an 5. _______________ and is fairly certain that he will find work. The oth-ers have some ideas, but you will need to help them. You send them off with an assignment: to write a resume.

After lunch, you are supervising the inmates in the yard when a scuffle between two inmates occurs. You break it up, but the animosity between these two could cause more trouble. Another officer arrives to escort them back to their cells to cool off for a while. You schedule a meeting to go over the problem and reach some kind of truce. If they cannot work out their differences, you will need to come up with a plan that will probably involve the loss of some of their 6. _______________.

You return to your desk, where you write up the incident for your supervisor and review the files of the feuding inmates only to discover that they’ve had problems since before their incarceration. This could be a difficult situation. You hope that you can use your strong negotiation skills to resolve the issue quickly!

Plumber

It’s 7:30 am, and you’ve just had your first cup of coffee. You already have six items on your to-do list for the day, as well as a bid to submit. First, you check the work shed at the back of your house to see if you’re getting low on basic supplies. It’s important that you always have some copper and plastic 1. _______________ in several sizes. You also have fittings to join the pipes, as well as solder and propane tanks. You never know when the phone will ring or an email will arrive and you’ll need these materials. Next, you check your toolkit, which includes 2. _______________, hacksaws, pipe cutters, a propane torch, a tape measure, and a variety of fittings and clamps in the bottom of the toolbox—everything you’ll need for the day—and load it into your company’s utility van.

At 8:30 am, your apprentice arrives and joins you at the kitchen table for a cup of coffee. You promised you would prepare the bid with her, since she wants to learn how to 3. _______________ the labor and material costs that go into a bid. It’ll take a little longer, but you don’t mind. This kind of one-on-one instruction is part of her “pay,” as she is learning the business.

This bid is for a big 4. _______________ with a construction company that’s building twelve new hous-es. If you’re awarded the contract, you’ll be installing all the plumbing in the houses. You check the house plans and explain the list you’re making to your apprentice. You’ll need to order faucets, sinks, shower heads, flushes, and pressure regulators from the 5. _______________. You figure out how much the materials will cost and how much time it will take you and your four plumbers to do the work. It’s a big contract, and you wonder if you’ll need to hire extra help. You come up with a price for the job, fill out the form, and seal your bid. If you get the work, it will be a productive summer for your company!

The morning’s passed quickly, and it’s already 1:00 pm. After lunch, you make some house calls. You usually like going to these appointments yourself. It helps build customer loyalty, but it can be dread-ful when someone’s pipes freeze in the middle of the night. You drive to Mrs. Arwalah’s house to fix a clogged 6. ______________. She’s been a customer since you started your business. You tell her to stop washing her furry dog so much. It’s hard on the drains! You whip out the aluminum “snake” from your toolkit and work it into the sink trap. In less than a minute, the water is spiraling down the drain and the sink is unclogged.

You like being able to solve people’s problems. It’s what makes your job worthwhile. Now, if you could just get around to repairing that leaky faucet in your own bathroom!

She has a prescription from her optometrist for a new pair of glasses, and you suggest a few frames that you think will suit both her prescription and personal style. Personal Care Aide

At 8:30 am, you drive to the home of your first client. You usually see three or four clients a day, and you enjoy keeping a relatively flexible schedule with minimal supervision. Although many of your tasks can be repetitive, there is always variety in the appointments, especially in terms of different clients’ needs and personalities. Today, you are scheduled to help three clients with their daily care.

You spend the morning with Marsha, a 45-year-old cancer patient who is chronically ill and requires assistance with most tasks. Marsha greets you with a gentle smile and adjusts her head scarf, which she wears because she lost her hair due to chemotherapy treatments. You prepare her prescribed medications and pour a glass of water to help her swallow the pills. Then you head to the kitchen to make a light 1. ________________, since Marsha does not have much of an appetite. While she eats, you chat with her about the news and the movies you both like.

After changing the bed linens, you guide Marsha to the bathroom and support her while she takes a shower. This is quite a tiring procedure for her, so you help her dry off, put on fresh pajamas, and get back into bed. Marsha reads while you tidy the house, make a call to confirm her doctor’s 2. ________________ for this afternoon, and prepare her next round of medication. Another personal care attendant arrives at 12:30 pm to take the afternoon shift, and you tell Marsha that you look forward to seeing her tomorrow.

He has endured months of physical 3. ________________ to learn how to use a wheelchair, but he still requires assistance with some tasks. You visit him twice a week to help with household chores.

The two of you gather his laundry, and then take the elevator to the washing machines in the basement of his apartment complex. You then assist Tim with getting into his car, which has been modified to accommodate a paralyzed driver, to drive to the grocery store. You have to pass him items from the high shelves, but you are very impressed to see him navi-gate the aisles in his 4. ________________ with a grocery basket on his lap. You both joke around a lot; as often happens with long-term clients, you are developing a strong bond with him. By the time you return to the apartment, Tim is expe-riencing some lower back pain, so you give him a muscle relaxant and put the groceries away by yourself. He rests as you finish the laundry, and then you say goodbye until next week.

Your 4:00 pm appointment is with one of your favorite clients, a 70-year-old man named George who has Alzheimer’s disease. The disease is still in its beginning stages, so he usually recognizes you, but he has trouble remembering to take his 5. ________________. You and George talk about politics while you lay out his pills on the table. George is still quite energetic most days, and he wants to take a walk before dinner. You calmly 6. ________________ him that you are here to help, and then guide him home. George eats dinner and tells stories while you clean up the living room and kitchen.

At 7:00 pm, you say goodnight to George and drive home to make your own dinner. Although assisting clients can some-times be difficult or tiring, this job gives you great satisfaction. You love having such a positive impact on people’s lives!

Environmental Health Inspector

You arrive at the public health department at 8:30 am, greeting colleagues as you climb the stairs to your office. You spend an hour responding to various complaints from citizens, reviewing the reports you have yet to submit, and go-ing over the day’s schedule. There are several routine 1. __________________ scheduled for today, so you drive to the first site, a fancy restaurant downtown.

You introduce yourself to the restaurant owner and pull out a clipboard with a long 2. __________________ of safety and health requirements. You scan the dining area to assess its cleanliness. In the kitchen, you inspect the refrigera-tion equipment, check the temperature of the heated food with a thermometer, and test the cleaning solution. You observe that the chefs are handling the food correctly, and then demonstrate the proper hand-washing technique for restaurant workers.

The owner is relieved to hear that the restaurant has passed the inspection! However, you have a few recommenda-tions for updating the refrigerators and ensuring that the cutlery is properly sanitized before being used in the dining area. You will write up a detailed report of the inspection when you return to the public health department.

Next, you drive to an apartment complex to follow up on a tenant’s complaint about mold in the building. You search her residence for signs of mold, and spot a patch of black dots on the bathroom ceiling. You scrape a sample of the offending gunk for the lab technicians to 3. __________________, and then interview the woman about her health history. Your inspection report will be forwarded to the property manager, who will have to comply with your recommendations for removing the mold or risk a citation and a possible court appearance. You don’t like being per-ceived as the enemy in these situations, but protecting a citizen’s health and safety is always your first priority.

You stop to eat lunch at a diner that you know has recently passed its inspection. Even on break, you find yourself constantly checking that all building 4. __________________ are up to the public health department’s standards!

Back at the office, you prepare to write the morning’s reports. Just as you turn on the computer, you receive an urgent call about a toxic fume leak in a factory. Sometimes you must cancel appointments to deal with a time-sensitive health emergency. You quickly gather your testing equipment and protective gear, and drive to the address.

The factory employees have already evacuated the building, which has minimized their 5. __________________ to any dangerous substances. You cautiously enter the factory and test the air quality. You scan the room for possible fume sources and notice that a pipe used to transfer hazardous waste has ruptured. You find the leak, call the emer-gency services team to contain the fumes, and inform the foreperson that the factory will remain closed until further testing confirms it is not contaminated. You collect samples to bring back to the lab, and then record statements from several factory workers about the cause of the accident.

You return to your office at 5:00 pm and start typing up the day’s reports. The emergency call threw off the after-noon’s scheduled inspections, but a quick response from a health department representative is crucial when dealing with these types of accidents. Your unfinished 6. __________________ will have to wait until tomorrow. At 7:00 pm, you are giving a presentation to the mobile food vendors’ association about proper food storage. You arrive at the 1. ________________ building by 8:30 am, ready to tackle whatever the day might bring. You pour yourself a cup of coffee in the staff kitchen and then scroll through the unread emails in your inbox with the goal of answering as many student and staff inquiries as possible before your first meeting.

You encounter an unexpected issue with an international 2. ________________ who has not been granted her study visa, which will allow her entry into the United States to attend the graduate school. This prob-lem must be resolved immediately, since courses start in a week! You make phone calls to the immigration department and her home college to investigate. With that admissions issue sorted, you hurry to the boardroom for a 10:00 am meeting with the student orientation 3. ________________. Air Traffic Controller

The international airport where you work is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and every flight is directed by multiple air traffic controllers. You usually have 8-hour shifts for 5 straight days, and then have 4 days off. Today, your shift in the 1. __________________ begins at 3:00 pm. You prefer working in the afternoon to the early morning, since you have to wake up at 5:00 am on those days!

You begin the shift by coordinating the 2. __________________ in your assigned sector of airspace. You are a little on edge be-cause the forecast calls for evening windstorms. Sudden downdrafts can be dangerous for aircraft, and severe weather can wreak havoc on air traffic schedules. However, you can’t let that distract you, since dozens of aircraft are waiting for your instructions. A plane takes off every few minutes, so your directions to the pilots must be both quick and precise

The flight plan you review for each departure has already been established with the FAA and pre-filed by the dispatch officer; the same flight paths are often used for regular destinations. The 3. __________________ indicates the type of aircraft, the route the pilot intends to use, and possible alternate routes. Once a flight plan is sent to the control tower, a flight strip is printed auto-matically. The tower keeps a physical copy of all flight plans in the rare case of an emergency system failure.

Pilots must contact ground control to receive 4. __________________ before the planes can take off. A pilot radios to you, “Tower, Skyway 789 is ready for departure.” After you read over the flight plan, scan the runway, and check the radar for obstacles, you confirm, “Skyway 789, you are cleared for departure.” High up in the control tower, you act as the pilot’s eyes while the plane taxis towards the runway. It can be difficult to see an aircraft in fog or storms, so you sometimes rely on ground surveillance radar to track its course.

Despite the bad weather, there are many flights scheduled for this afternoon, and you focus on directing smooth departures. After each take off, you monitor the plane until it leaves your sector of airspace. Once the plane has ascended past a certain altitude, another air traffic controller tracks the en-route flight using long-range radar.

At 5:00 pm, you take an hour-long break. Air traffic controllers take several breaks during each shift, as the high-pressure job requires sustained concentration. After all, you are responsible for many people’s lives every day!

Next, you switch to coordinating the arrivals in your 5. __________________. You adjust the flight paths for planes approaching the airport from several directions in order to merge their landings seamlessly onto one runway. You broadcast the Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS), which gives updates on weather conditions, wind speed, and the active runway. The pilots need this information for their descents. For one arrival, you state, “Icarus 542, runway 25 Right, winds are out of the Northeast at 28 knots. You are cleared to land.” The plane touches down on the runway and uses the air brakes to slow down. Once it leaves the active runway and turns onto a clear taxiway, the ground controller advises the pilot which gate to approach.

You eat dinner during your 8:00 pm break. When you get back to your desk, you notice that the wind has picked up substan-tially. You check the forecast for the next 4 to 6 hours and issue a warning to pilots about windshear, since these sudden changes in wind direction can be dangerous if a pilot is not expecting them. As you have been assigned to a satellite position for the rest of your shift, you use an advanced 6. __________________ system to monitor the flight paths of aircraft in your sector.

At 11:00 pm, you hand over control to the next shift, making sure to mention the windshear warning. Your job can be exhaust-ing, but you love the challenge and excitement of being the eyes in the skies!

Physical Therapist

The first thing you see as you walk into the hospital lobby at 7:30 am is a diver in full scuba gear cleaning the walls inside a huge two-story aquarium. You work in a children’s hospital, and the young patients love to watch the brightly colored fish dart in and around the coral. Many of the children who come to you for physical therapy have been convinced to 1. __________________ their muscles by walking to the aquarium.

You take the elevator to the physical therapy department on the sixth floor. Your 8:00 am appointment is with an outpatient—some-one who is not staying at the hospital—so you grab her file and head to a therapy room. Sally, a 9-year-old girl, fractured her ankle playing soccer 6 weeks ago, and recently had her cast removed. Now she must strengthen the 2. __________________ of the newly healed ankle to prevent further injury.

First, you use an ultrasound machine on the underused muscles in Sally’s leg to warm the muscle tissue and increase circulation. Sal-ly still uses crutches, but you encourage her to walk using the parallel bars. She takes slow, tentative steps while leaning most of her weight on the bars, and you monitor her for signs of pain. You think that Sally will fully recover from this 3. __________________ and eventually play soccer again, and you jot this down in her file.

Your next patient, Charlie, grins happily when he sees you enter the playroom. He was born with cerebral palsy, which makes his torso and limbs rigid and makes motor control difficult. While Charlie giggles, you give him a soft tissue 4. __________________ to loosen his joints. You stretch out his arms and legs to increase his range of motion and flexibility. Next, you play a game that involves standing and throwing a ball. This type of exercise is very good for children with limited motor function, as it improves muscle tone, balance, and circulation. It’s also fun! To end the session, you teach Charlie’s parents some basic yoga positions they can do with their son.

After saying goodbye to Charlie, you head to the rest of the morning’s appointments. You then eat lunch in your office while typing up notes on the patients.

At 1:00 pm, you head to the surgery ward to check on 13-year-old Linus. He was born with a disease called scoliosis, and the recent operation to repair the abnormal curve of his spine was successful. You are designing a unique treatment plan while he is still an inpatient. Under your direction, Linus shuffles around the room using a walker to regain his balance and strength. You then dem-onstrate some stretches that he can do in the hospital bed. His progress is impressive, but Linus still has a long road to recovery. He will wear a back brace for several months to allow his fragile spine to heal. After he is discharged, you will develop a home 5. __________________ program, and he will return to the hospital as an outpatient.

Your next patient is an energetic 6-year-old named Lucy who is missing her left leg below the knee due to a birth defect and wears a 6. __________________ limb. You taught Lucy how to make the false limb a natural extension of her body. Now, she is very good at running and playing. You still see her at the hospital once a month to monitor her flexibility, stamina, and muscle strength as she uses exercise balls and balance trainers. You regularly assess her leg for soreness, and you will order replacement prosthetics as she continues to grow.

Your afternoon is filled with more appointments, since you often see up to 30 patients a day. At 4:00 pm, you return to your office to complete paperwork and update the patients’ files. Tomorrow, you have appointments with other children, so you review their files and prepare activities suited to their individual needs. You love that this job involves helping children learn how to walk, move, and play every day!

Bus Driver

You arrive at the downtown bus 1. __________________ at 4:00 pm. You will be driving an all-night route to a large city in the next state. It will be a long haul, and you hope the weather isn’t too bad, since people want to get home to their families for the holidays.

Next, you confirm with your supervisor that all routes are on schedule for today and there have been no last-minute changes. You log in to the office computer to check the forecasted weather conditions, and then take a few minutes to review the map. You have driven this 3. __________________ many times, but it never hurts to refresh your memory about the highway num-bers and exits for the stops.

At 6:00 pm, you eat dinner in the staffroom with a few of the other drivers and catch up. Half an hour before the scheduled departure, you head out to the bus bay and lift the side hatches of the bus so that the baggage handler can store passengers’ large luggage underneath. There is already a long line of people waiting, and many are chatting excitedly about their upcom-ing holiday plans. You collect 4. __________________ from passengers and confirm their intended destinations. You help load the remaining baggage, as well as a few packages that you will deliver, into the bottom of the bus. You pull down the hatch doors and ensure they are secure.

You announce the scheduled 5. __________________ along the route over the loudspeaker and give the passengers information about safety protocol, the on-board bathroom, and other important travel details.

As you drive, the passengers gradually quiet down and watch movies, read, or sleep. You concentrate on the passing exits and the changing weather conditions. You drive very carefully, as some of the highways are icy from freezing rain. At each stop along your route, you pull into the bus terminal and announce the town over the loudspeaker. You double check that the cor-rect number of passengers exit the bus and help new passengers on board.

Around 2:00 am, you pull into a large all-night service station along the highway and announce that there will be a 15-min-ute break. Passengers are allowed to use the facilities and buy snacks. You grab a large coffee and a sandwich to keep alert while driving the final leg of your journey.

At 6:00 am, you pull into the bus terminal and announce that you have arrived at the final destination. Nurse

You are looking forward to a quiet evening at home, but you can’t forget that tonight you are one of the on-call nurses for the emergency room. This means you may be called in to help if there are too many patients requiring immediate care. You glance outside at the tree branches whipping about in the wind and rain, and hope that there are no major accidents tonight because of the storm.

At 9:00 pm, you get a call from the receptionist at the hospital’s front desk. There has been a multiple-vehicle accident on the free-way, and you have to get to the emergency room right away! You leap off of the sofa and take a last bite of pizza before dashing out the door—you don’t know when you will have a chance to eat again.

You get to the ER at 9:30 pm, just as an 1. __________________ arrives with its siren screaming. Paramedics open the vehicle’s back doors and lift out a gurney with a groaning middle-aged man on it, and then they race into the hospital. You reach your locker in the staff room and quickly put on a fresh pair of 2. __________________ and your comfortable work sneakers. The ER is chaotic, but it’s times like this when you know you can be the most helpful by remaining calm and providing efficient care to one patient at a time.

A pregnant woman who was involved in the pile-up is your first patient. You wrap the cuff of a sphygmomanometer around her upper arm and pump it up using the valve to check her 3. __________________ while asking questions about her medical history. You start an intravenous (IV) drip to administer extra fluids to make sure she doesn’t get dehydrated and make a note in her chart.

Your next patient is the man you saw in the ambulance. He sustained a mild heart attack because of the shock of the crash, but you are happy to see that he is in stable condition. You use the electrocardiogram machine (ECG) to measure his heart rate and check his blood pressure. You record the stats in his 4. __________________ and inform him that a doctor will prescribe some heart medication before he is discharged.

Your next patient is a 7-year-old boy who was in the crash with his father. He has a long laceration on his forearm, but otherwise he is unhurt. You reassure the father that his son is fine, but will probably need stitches and 5. __________________ to prevent infection. You clean the wound and make a note in the boy’s chart for the doctor. You smile at the young patient and tell him this will make an exciting story for the playground tomorrow.

Around 3:00 am, you help transport one unlucky victim of the crash to the intensive care unit (ICU) after she has emergency 6. __________________ on a severed artery. You start her on an intravenous morphine drip because you know that she will be in pain after she wakes up. You also assist a doctor with administering a CT scan to a patient who has suffered a serious concussion to ensure that he has not sustained permanent brain damage.

It is 6:00 am, and things have finally quieted down in the ER. You are exhausted, but you know that the medical team has saved a lot of lives in the past few hours. You brief the nurses coming in to begin the day shift on the night’s events, pointing out specific notes in several patients’ charts for them to continue monitoring. You head home to have a quick shower before collapsing into bed for a well-deserved rest.
