The 21-year-old, who works for Holland Collision Centre in Rolleston, has just returned from Leipzig in Germany where he has been competing as part of the New Zealand ‘Tool Blacks’ team taking part in the international WorldSkills Championships.

The championships pit country against country in a series of tasks across a wide range of trades, including aircraft maintenance, auto body repair, sheet metal technology, electrical installation and joinery. The age limit for most categories is 22 years and under.

Competing in the autobody repair category, Ackers finished sixth out of 20 competitors from different countries and also earned enough points to be awarded a Medallion of Excellence, one of only four of the New Zealand team of 13 tradesmen and women who did so.

Rolleston panel beater Jake Ackers can rightly claim to be one of the best in the world when it comes to his trade.

“It was an extremely intense competition and part of that is because you know you are representing all New Zealand panelbeaters,” Ackers said.

“It was quite an amazing experience to be a part of a competition like this and like any competition training and being mentally prepared are keys to doing well.”

Among the tasks Ackers had to perform in the four days of competition included diagnosing and repairing a number of auto body issues including chassis straightening and dent repair, using skills such as welding and metal finishing.

He had won a number of regional and national competitions to become eligible for selection into the ‘Tool Blacks’ and while this year’s WorldSkills Championships is the last he can enter, because of the age restrictions, Ackers is still keen to stay involved and help whoever is next selected. ¢

She is a mine of information on everything to do with Rolleston and there would be few pupils who have attended the school who have not been cared for by ‘Mrs M’, who attends to all manner of bumps and bruises with a motherly cuddle and lots of reassurance.

Selwyn has been the fastest growing district in New Zealand over the past five years, and last year also experienced the strongest economic growth in New Zealand.

In the year to June, Selwyn District Council issued 1084 building consents, a 76% increase on the 616 consents issued during the same period in 2012.

Mayor Kelvin Coe says council’s building and resource consent staff have had an incredibly busy year.

“Over 12,000 building inspections were carried out during the year. Consenting staff have been under pressure but council is coping, with only a few of the more complicated consents taking more than 20 days.”

Resource consent applications also increased by 32% up from 426 to 562.

“A fast track consent process was introduced last year for simple consents which allows applicants to receive consents more quickly and at a reduced cost,” Mayor Coe says.

“An increasing number of consents

are being processed through this process as more applications are now eligible to be fast tracked.”

According to the council the building boom in Selwyn is being matched by an employment boom with figures showing that the number of jobs in the district increased by 9.5% last year, nearly ten times the national average of 1%.

“Construction activity in our district is busier than ever and many new businesses are setting up here,” Coe says.

“People who are moving here say that they like being able to live in a rural environment so close to Christchurch, having space for their families and are also attracted by the employment opportunities in our district.”

Mayor Coe says council is focussed on investing in infrastructure and services for the growing population, including the new Selwyn Aquatic Centre which opened last month and a new library set to open in Lincoln early next year.

Building permit boomhighlights record growth

More indications have emerged to show Selwyn is in for another record year of expansion.

by Kent Caddick

Centre manager Kathy Moore says comments from the 7,648 people who have visited the centre during its first two weeks have been “incredibly positive. Our staff are getting lots of comments about how fantastic the new centre is and how great it is to have this facility in Selwyn.”

Despite the centre being extremely busy, Kathy Moore says staff have been able to provide a high level of customer service.

Kathy Vernimmen of Rolleston has visited the pool three times since it had opened and has been using the

Selwyn Aquatic Centre running swimminglyOver 7,600 people have dipped their toes in the new Selwyn Aquatic Centre in the first two weeks the facility in Rolleston has been running.

pThe Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston has attracted over 7,600 visitors in two weeks

hydrotherapy  pool. “It’s great to have the pool here to use,” she says.

“I used to visit a pool in Christchurch as swimming is a good form of exercise for me as it helps with my arthritis. Now I can use a local heated pool.”

Aquafitness classes at the centre began last week. The timetable for classes is available online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/sac.

Swim school lessons will start from the week of July 29. Infant and pre-school lessons will start two weeks into term three (in mid-August). ¢

There is so much progress here at the moment and, as community board members, one of us is included in each of the teams that bring these big projects to fruition.

We are there to protect the interests of the ratepayers in our area, which is Rolleston, Weedons, West Melton, Halkett and Burnham. As part of our job we attend all the local community committee and residents’ association meetings and therefore we have a real feel for those areas and the people in them.

Are we an extension of the council or an extension of the community? Around the country all community boards are different. However one thing is always the same. We should be able to provide value to our council on one hand and to the community on the other hand.

We are not councillors, council staff members or a committee of council and we do not occupy council building space.

We see ourselves as being at the front line of council’s relationship with its ratepayers and we work with and on behalf of those people to achieve a good and sustainable quality of life.

Exciting times for community board by Liz Russell, chair of the Selwyn Central Community Board

What a great time to be part of the Selwyn Central Community Board.

This means that occasionally we shall represent views that oppose the council but are the views of the community.

We take community concerns seriously. We also invite publicity and transparency into policy making and are fortunate that the council asks for our input.

We have taken an oath to act in the best interests of the whole community but, unlike the council, we can focus solely on our community. We do not have to make our decisions based on the whole district.

So let us work together to make this a great place to live and work. ¢

Student board members on stage by Jenny Gallagher, chair of the Malvern Community Board

The Malvern Community Board members are continually working for with our communities, and helping them to achieve their projects.

For the last two years we have had two Darfield High School students sitting on our board. We believe it is important to have youth involvement and this can be of benefit to both parties.

Our two representatives this year are Brock Hatton and Henry Oliver. Recently they both appeared in the school production of Frankenstein.

Brock played a voluptuous and entertaining Mrs Twitter who without a doubt was the highlight of the show. Henry played a very mono-symbolic Monster who found love in an unexpected way. Congratulations to both boys on a great performance during the show which was a credit to the school.

Each month we consider grant applications from members and groups from our community for a variety of reasons. The board has a Discretionary Fund available each year for willing applicants who are seeking help in representing our community in many different ways.

At our board meeting in June we gave grant money to students for trips to Wellington and China, Scouts and a rugby team for travel to tournaments as well as the newly formed Tots to Tweenies groups who are establishing a babysitting agency in Darfield.

Glentunnel is at present in the process of getting Welcome to Glentunnel signs made. The Museum has been open on a Sunday over the summer months and has been running well. They are now closed over the winter months.

Recently the three communities of Coalgate, Glentunnel and Whitecliffs had a Mid-Winter Christmas Dinner with around 170 people attending. What a great way of uniting communities together!

The Board has appointed Bob Mugford as our representative on a committee for the development for McHugh’s Plantation. This will benefit the whole of the Selwyn district by providing a large recreation area for everyone to use.

The Medical Centre in Darfield is nearly complete and we will be having an official opening in the near future.

Council staff are working on a District Wide Planning Strategy and this will have positive results for Malvern.

Board members are very passionate about our community and are always willing to listen to your needs. Please don’t hesitate to contact one of our board members if you require support on community issues. ¢

Weedons’ speedster keen to tackle other challenges by David Murdoch

Weedons’ runner Maria Hendry has added to her growing list of achievements with a win in the recent Canterbury Primary Schools’ cross-country championships.

Competing in the Year 6 girls’ division, the 10-year-old from Weedons School took out the title coming home just a second ahead of her nearest rival, battling frost, ice and mud on the testing 2km hilly circuit at Halswell Quarry to record a time of 7 minutes 46 seconds.

Underlining the closeness of the race was the fact the first six runners were only separated by eight seconds.

A member of the Port Hills Athletic Club, Hendry is no stranger to the Halswell Quarry circuit.

“I train a lot on the Rim Track at Halswell Quarry, so I’m used to hill running,” she says.

“I also go for a two to three kilometre run with my dad about once a week.”

The victory in the cross-country championships adds to two other

top results this year with Hendry placing second in the Primary Sports Canterbury (PSC) duathlon and second in the PSC triathlon.

Her reward for the win in the cross country is a place in the Canterbury PSC cross-country team to compete at the 9th Inter‐regional championships in Nelson at the end of September.

While Hendry has been running competitively for several years she has a variety of sporting interests including eventing and touch rugby.

“I’m trying to get Dad to let me play tackle rugby,” Maria says.

The First Step Run Group is coached by Karen Muller who has been coaching running and multisport since 2007. She is a competitive runner and multisporter, recently winning the Motatapu Multisport race.

Karen says the Run Group caters for all levels of runners and gets together once a week to work on technique and fitness.

“The hour run session just flies by when you are working in a group and it’s so much easier to push yourself to your potential than when running alone,” Karen says.

“We have been seeing some excellent results over the past year with many personal bests and lots of fun along the way.”

‘Team Darfield’ has been successful in a number of recent running events at St Claire near Blenheim, Christchurch, Wellington and Hanmer Springs, which have included half marathon and 10k distances, and the Women’s Triathlon and Duathlon series in Ashburton.

Running has been shown to have many health benefits including:

Weight loss: The average runner burns 1,000 calories an hour during a training session.

Getting fit and having fun by Kent Caddick

Run yourself to a happier, smarter, lighter and healthier you is the motto of the First Step Run Group in Darfield.

Mental health: Lift your mood and build self-esteem. Running can help relieve mild depression.

Sleep: Runners find it easier to get to sleep at night and sleep longer.

Stress: Running increases your ability to cope with everyday minor irritations and stresses.

Anxiety: Runners generally have a lower level of anxiety than those who don’t run.

Immune system: Runners have a stronger immune system, which means they get sick less often.

Brain power: You can increase your mental functions by going running as it boosts blood flow to the brain and helps it receive oxygen and nutrients, making you more productive at work.

Complexion: Running stimulates your circulation, improving the transportation of nutrients around your system and flushing out waste products. This will help make your skin clearer.

Fat burn: By running you are building lean muscle, changing your body composition and your metabolism.

Attention all Baby Boomers

Of course it is essential to get good medical advice but there are many simple, practical and effective measures we can implement to help our bodies as we age. I have seen thousands of people make real improvement using such measures built around good diet and appropriate supplements.

Our health is entirely dependent on optimum intake of essential nutrients including the 21 known essential minerals, all the vitamins and numerous antioxidants that protect our cells against free radicals. Farmers and Vets know too well the importance of good animal nutrition. Maybe it is time we took equally good care of our bodies.

The effects of these low nutrient levels can take decades to show their effect. Most people with hypertension find that this first appears after age 50. In most cases this is just a slow deterioration in the structure of blood vessels especially a lack of the antioxidants that protect the proteins (collagen and elastin) that make up most of blood vessels. Over time this increases the resistance of blood meaning your heart has to work harder to circulate blood to your cells. A study by hypertension researcher De Champlain (2004) “Oxidative Stress in Hypertension” concluded with: “Moreover, our studies suggest that the chronic treatment with appropriate antioxidative therapies could prevent the development of hypertension.” My experience is that people with primary hypertension can get real benefits from intensive antioxidant therapy.

Osteoarthritis is also caused by the slow breakdown of antioxidant defences. In this case the target of excess free radicals is cartilage cells. When these cells die the result is a slow erosion of joint tissue. This attracts inflammation and we end up with sore, stiff or worn out joints. The same principle can also affect our energy where excess free radicals damage our energy conversion systems leading to a slow decline in energy levels.

If you are a baby boomer concerned about your health it is important to have a plan to help with current health problems and to ensure that your health can sustain you in your later years.

Most of us can get away with poor health choices in our 20’s and 30’s but from age 40 the first signs of decline start to appear. Raised blood pressure, cholesterol, arthritis and other problems all start to appear.

Treat for ballet loversSelwyn ballet lovers are in for a special treat next month with the Royal New Zealand Ballet bringing the classic Swan Lake to the CBS Arena in Christchurch.

There will be two shows in Christchurch on August 3, a matinee and an evening performance. Following the matinee cast will come front of stage for a question session with the audience, while those attending the evening performance are being invited along early to watch the ballet dancers warm up.

The ballet is part of a special year for the Royal New Zealand Ballet which celebrates 60 years in 2013.

“In this anniversary year, I felt it appropriate to present a ballet that would encapsulate the RNZB’s history, as well as one that is an important work for any ballet company to perform regularly,” RNZB’s artistic director Ethan Stiefel says.

“I could think of no better way to capture this idea than to have

Swan Lake performed as it is a production created by two celebrated New Zealand icons that have made such important contributions to the RNZB over the years — Russell Kerr and Kristian Fredrikson.”

Kerr, from Christchurch, choreographed this version of Swan Lake back in 1996 when it was first performed in Wellington and says he is humbled to see his production of Swan Lake showcased this year.

“This 60th anniversary offers the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the country the opportunity to mark the occasion with performances of the company’s own production of Swan Lake and also offers dancers and choreographer the opportunity to relive the art that passes between the — the act of giving and receiving,” Kerr says.

Complementing Russell Kerr’s impeccable choreography are extravagant costumes and spectacular sets designed by the late Kristian Fredrikson, one of Australasia’s most experienced and sought after designers. ¢

THE RECORD July 17 - 2013 7

You were born in Ashburton and went to Lincoln Primary School, what have you been doing since?

I attended Lincoln Primary School between 1959–64 then moved to Ashburton where I completed my education at Ashburton College. I was married in 1980. In 1982 I moved to Queenstown where I worked as an accountant for the Skyline Group.

In 1985 I moved to Nelson where I worked as a company accountant and then treasury accountant for Sealord Product. In 1991 I joined Tasman District Council initially as Corporate Services Manager. It was an exciting time to join local government following the 1989 amalgamation which had restructured councils across the country.

We stayed in sunny Nelson for 16 years until I decided I wanted a new challenge and applied for the role of Chief Executive at Horowhenua District Council. I had a number of goals I wanted to achieve there and by 2013 I had completed them all and applied for the position here.

What attracted you to the position at the Selwyn District Council?

Selwyn is known as a particularly well governed and well managed Council which was part of the attraction for

me. The district is the fastest growing in the country and there are a number of very positive challenges associated with the role which I am looking forward to.

Councils are extremely large businesses who provide a wide range of services which people use every day. For example from the time you get up in the morning until the time you arrive at work most people use several different Council services like water, wastewater, roads and footpaths.

We have the opportunity to have a

lot of impact on people’s lives and we need to make sure that we provide good services, that we have great customer service and that we communicate with residents what we’re doing and why we’re doing it. I think my background in finance, communication and consultation is well suited to helping ensure that we do this and I’m looking forward to working on these areas.

What do you see as the major challenges for the Selwyn district in the coming years?

I think a lot of the challenges will be around preparing for and responding to growth. The Council has a significant number of major infrastructure projects underway already so my role will be to focus on ensuring these stay on track and that we are always thinking ahead to what we need to do next.

We also need to ensure that we focus on ensuring that people who move here want to stay — that we have good community facilities, that we support new residents and that we continue to develop existing relationships in the community.

When you are not sitting behind the CEO’s desk what do you do to relax?

I’m a typical Kiwi bloke. I’m into most sports, particularly rugby and rugby

league in the winter. I’ve always had a passion for cricket. I’m a keen but often frustrated follower of the Black Caps.

I was married to Vicky in 1980 and we have two adult daughters who are both currently living in Australia. Both my wife and I are active golfers and enjoy spending time with family.

We’re planning to rent for a while while we work out where in Selwyn we want to build so we will be spending quite a bit of time planning our new home here over the next year. ¢

The new sports club, now the largest in the region with a membership of almost 800, was formed at the start of the current season by a merger between Rolleston and Ellesmere football clubs.

Allen, a well-qualified football coach and administrator, says the merger was quite a long and difficult process.

“But it was important to get it right because there are huge benefits, such as streamlined administration and collaboration with other sports.”

Allen says a key aspect of the new SDO position is facilitating consistent and co-ordinated coaching throughout the club.

“We need to educate and upskill new coaches, and continue to educate and train experienced coaches.”

Over the next five years Allen would like to see greater club involvement with school football.

“It’s about promoting player technical development, while ensuring that kids aren’t doing too much training.”

He is also passionate about steering Selwyn UFC men’s and women’s first teams into the top tiers, and firmly believes Mainland Premier League status can be reached.

Allen has been involved with bringing the Burnley Football Club Academy of Australasia to New Zealand.

“This has created a well-defined pathway for player development and has given footballers the opportunity to progress to professional ranks in Australia, Asia and the English Football League.”

Over the next five to ten years, Allen sees the Foster Park sportsville in Rolleston becoming a national centre of sport participation, development and excellence.

Works by Philip Beadle, Anna Schoolderman, Andrew Lyons, Karin Werner, Jennifer Neutze and Soodesh Jooron will be on display at the gallery in Darfield until August 1.

“Darfield Artweek was a wonderful show last year with record attendances and a very high standard of entries,” the gallery’s arts co-ordinator Ingrid Cole says.

“We hope to continue its success this year with Artweek 2013 in October.”

The artists on display are: Philip Beadle: Beadle is a self taught

artist who works in oil, watercolour, dry point and monotype. He has travelled and painted extensively and had many exhibitions and won several awards. Since the Christchurch earthquakes he has enjoyed painting some of the city’s historic buildings, documenting their character before they have to come down.

Anna Schoolderman: Schoolderman paints in watercolour with meticulous attention to detail. She captures her subjects (wildlife, domestic animals, flora or people) in a way that draws her audience emotionally into the painting. She has won several awards and her work is in collections here and abroad.

Andrew Lyons: Lyons has been a full time sculptor for many years and particularly likes using wood to reveal his love of the natural world. He has exhibited regularly over the years in solo

and group exhibitions and his work is in collections around the world.

Karin Werner: Werner has drawn and painted all her life and is self taught, with a preference for painting horses. She mostly works with watercolours, oils, soft pastels and graphite. She has exhibited her work all over the South Island and has won numerous awards.

Jennifer Neutze: Neutze’s most recent work in oils reflects the influence of old architecture in Europe, with a whimsical twist and deliberate distortion of the shape of buildings. Her experience in watercolours led to many teaching requests. Neutze has received various art awards over the years and exhibited widely both in group and solo exhibitions.

Soodesh Jooron: Jooron paints in all media and as a figurative painter, his forte ranges through portraiture, still life, wildlife and landscapes. Born into a family of artists on the island of Mauritius, he began winning his first art competitions at the age of ten. Jooron has exhibited internationally and won several awards.

The Selwyn Art Gallery will be open daily (except Mondays) from 10am to 4pm for the exhibition and an exhibition programme is available on the gallery’s website, selwyngallery.co.nz, or from the gallery.

Ingrid Cole is reminding Selwyn artists entries for Artweek 2013 open this month and to check the gallery’s website for details. ¢

New venture for Selwyn’s syndication innovator by Kent Caddick

pNoel Kennard with In It For Fun syndicate’s horse Franco Harrison

Weedon’s Noel Kennard broke the mould of horse racing syndication in 2012 when he launched his 500 share In It For Fun syndicate, 420 punters took a piece in the syndicate and its horse Franco Harrison.

Encouraged by overwhelming positive feedback and inquiries about any future syndicates, Noel is currently launching the Double the Fun syndicate which will feature two horses and have 1000 syndicate shares on offer. This time each individual syndicate share can have up to five members.

“Up until the In It For Fun syndicate horse racing syndicates were usually four or five friends getting together to buy a horse and share in the training costs and possibly any stake money the horse would win,” Kennard says.

“The reality is that in most cases racing horses is not a great financial investment, it is about the friendship and camaraderie created by people enjoying a common interest, and the thrill of one day standing in the winning circle with your horse and friends, a feeling that money can’t buy.

The man who revolutionised harness racing syndication inNew Zealand is launching his latest variation — calledDouble the Fun.

With syndicates, the thrill is the same, but the cost is greatly reduced”

Kennard’s concept is simple — you buy a share in a syndicate for a one-off cost for a two-year duration. There are no ongoing costs involved and at the end of the two-year period the horse is sold and syndicate members share in the proceeds of that as well as any stake money the horse has earned along the way.

Kennard is an Authorised Syndicator and has been vetted by both Harness Racing New Zealand and the Commerce Commission.

In the 1980s he became involved in the breeding industry and set up a stallion station on a 20-acre property at Weedons, later increasing his involvement in the marketing and promotional side.

“It became apparent that because of the rising costs ownership of horses was moving to multiple ownership through syndication.”

At the same time racing authorities were trying to encourage people to get involved in the industry, promoting a fun element to the sport rather than profit.

“Even with four or five people involved in a syndicate the chances of making any substantial money are slim and while there was all this talk about promoting the fun element of horse ownership not a lot was being done.” Kennard says.

That was when he hit on the idea of creating a syndicate with a large number of participants paying a one-off fee for their involvement over a two-year period. Feedback from syndicate members has been hugely positive with many new friendships formed. The new Double the Fun syndicate has already secured one horse who is in the hands of Southland trainer Hamish Hunter with the second horse, once it’s purchased, going to Weedons’ trainer Nigel McGrath.

Strong showing for leading brand by our Motoring Correspondent

With new tractors ranging from 110hp to 215hp this represents one of the widest range of new Valtra tractor offerings at the Fieldays ever. And while there was a dizzying selection of new tractors available, the 171hp N163 proved to be the star of the stand due to its power-to-cylinder ratio.

Producing up to 171 hp (with power boost), from just four cylinders, the N163 promises the highest horsepower of a four-cylinder tractor in New Zealand. However nimbleness and comfort have not been compromised, with the company saying the tractor has been fitted out with new software, transmission and new engine technology to create a reliable and user-friendly machine that provides optimal performance in all conditions.

Some features include the inclusion of Headland GPS software which is sure to be of interest to contractors. A lot of work has gone into the brand’s lower-horsepower tractors too with the 101hp A93 being released for the first time in New  Zealand. A hydraulic controlled multidisc clutched two-speed PTO will be a standard feature on the A3 Series from now on, as will an unique autotraction

feature and automated 4WD system. The higher six-cylinder horsepower range has been expanded too, with an interior that has been overhauled for long use and improved torque and fuel saving capabilities.

This is certainly the case with the optional availability of System 150, a comprehensive autopilot based on satellite positioning technology, capable of steering the tractor with great precision to within a few centimetres.

There has been plenty of rain, causing some flooding around Lake Ellesmere and Leeston areas. This was followed by large dumps of snow in the High Country and in the top parts of North Canterbury.

North Canterbury Rural Support Trust did an excellent job appraising the situation and assisting those who required it by placing people power on the farms. Federated Farmers was not the organiser, but assisted where possible. Before extreme weather events prepare your house with a landline phone, if there is a loss of power this will come in handy. Keep your communications short as the phone cabinets and cell phone towers rely on battery power and need to be charged up by portable generators.

One hour of charging gives approximately two hours of use. Cell phone towers can quite often be hard to access, especially if they are on a hill and these require a much larger generator than the average farmer owns. Of the 27,000 Federated Farmers members, the national office has only 25 per cent with mobile phone numbers listed. Texting is a very efficient way to communicate when a disaster occurs, especially if you are looking for help, or a warning needs to be issued.

Important noticeIt has come to our attention that some dairy farmers are putting strings or

wires across roads and leaving them there blocking the road. One rural postman

Be prepared forwinter weather extremes by Neil Stott, Provincial President North Canterbury Federated Farmers

What an interesting weather combination for the last month.

drove into a wire the other morning in the dark.

This is extremely dangerous, please take down wires/strings on roads at night and have sufficient warning signs at all times.

Road repairsAn interesting issue to think about —

why is sealing of roads getting worse?Over several years new sealing is

lifting and causing potholes within weeks of the job being finished. Is there a timeframe that a sealing contract has to be started and finished in, and is this too short? Is the ground temperature too cold? Has the technology not kept up with the volume of road use?

If you know why this is, I’d love to hear from you.

Planting treesIf you are intending on planting trees

on the roadside this year, consider the dangers that could be caused.

To people who have already planted this year or previous years please keep the height down so shading is minimised. It could be you that is hit by an out of control vehicle sliding on ice.

The brainchild of David Buckley, Rural Fields provides farmers in Canterbury with a range of on-farm agricultural contracting services.

David’s background has been in dairy farming, beginning as a share-milker in Meremere in the North Island, before moving to Otago and eventually settling near Springfield with a herd of 550 cows.

When a downturn in the economy hit he relinquished his herd but wanted to stay in the area.

“I loved the area and the people but after milking for 22 years I was looking for something different to do,” he says.

David found himself a niche in providing agricultural contracting services to the growing number of lifestyle properties in the Selwyn district and set up Rural Fields.

Starting out with a 100hp John Deere tractor he provided full cultivation, mowing and conventional baling to this growing market. From there Rural Fields transitioned into

becoming a leader in agricultural contracting in Selwyn where it now provides a wide range of services to small and large scale farmers.

“My basic reason for getting into the contracting business was to help farmers make money and the flow on from that was if they were making money then so would I.

“The cost of machinery plus the amount of time taken up maintaining and running that machinery meant it was becoming prohibitive for farmers.”

However, it wasn’t just a matter of buying some equipment. He also wanted to be able to have an input into making everything more efficient for his clients. So he turned his hand to inventing and quite a successful hand that turned out to be.

One problem he was able to solve for farmers was filling in the hazardous ruts created by centre pivot irrigators. He

One of Canterbury’s leading farming contractors, Rural Fields of Darfield, will this year mark 10 years of being in business.

Selwyn contractor marks 10 years of innovation

designed a unique, purpose-built, front-tipping trailer for filling irrigator pivot ruts which led to the pioneering of a new service for contractors to offer. So successful was his design and idea many others have tried to replicate it.

Then in conjunction with Sheffield firm Taege Engineering, David designed the Taege Air Seeder Direct Drill which offers a number of greater efficiencies in drilling.

As well as being inventive he was also innovative, and one of the first to install GPS technology in his tractors providing speed, versatility and highly accurate billing for his clients.

“If I can save farmers five minutes a day over a year that adds up to almost an extra week off. Now who doesn’t want an extra week off every year?”

pDavid Buckley of Rural Fields, Darfield

Selwyn Rakaia Vet Services Ltd

Veterinary Services & Farm Consultancy62 South Terrace, Darfield

03 317 9937

OFFiCe hOurS Monday to Friday 10am - 2pm

Veterinary services expanding to Darfield by Kent Caddick

Dunsandel based Selwyn Rakaia Vets has opened a new branch office in Darfield.

Owners Donald and Jose Arthur unlocked the doors to their new premises in South Terrace in Darfield on  Monday. They will be offering the same services in Darfield as currently available in Dunsandel, where they first started in 1996, including veterinary and farm consultancy services.

Selwyn Rakaia Vets employ a total of 19 people with 10 veterinarians, two farm consultants, three technicians and four administration staff.

“We have been growing our client base in Central Canterbury for some time now and wanted to be in closer proximity to our clients’ farms in the Darfield area,” Donald  explains. He says the huge growth in dairying across Canterbury has seen the demand for their service rise significantly.

Selwyn Rakaia Vets specialise in dairy herd health and management, utilising several DairyNZ programmes to help farmers improve farm performance.

These programmes include: In-Calf, Smart SAMM Healthy Udder, Healthy Hoof and Spring Skills training. The programmes are about a preventative approach aimed at improving farm profitability.

“Basically these programmes are about providing farmers with preventative support rather than having us come in as a reactive measure when something goes wrong,” Donald says.

“Our farm consultants are involved in supporting the whole farm system including soil testing, fertiliser recommendations, nutrient budgeting, irrigation plans, pasture and feed management, and supporting new dairy conversions.”

The veterinary technicians help the vets with many of the routine day to day procedures such as: computer recording of pregnancy results into the Livestock Improvement Minda data

base, dehorning calves, teat sealing heifers, dry cow treatments and oestrus synchrony programmes for mating.

Donald Arthur says there has been strong demand for their farm consultants as there appears to be a shortage of this type of support in Canterbury.

“I guess that is a reflection of the rapid growth in dairying right across the region and our consultancy work is a real growth area for the business,” he says.

The new Darfield office will be managed by Lucy Keijzer with farm consultant Brad Sutton and vets as required. The office will be open between 10am-2pm Monday to Friday but after hours support from the team at Selwyn Rakaia Vets is only a phone call away. ¢

But there has always been another side to Polaris as well. It’s a side epitomised by the more fiery temperament and track-bred sensibilities of their RZR range — most specifically the potent RZR 900.

The key to the performance of the big RZR is its 875cc ProStar engine, an almost ridiculously efficient mill which churns out 60 horses from its twin cylinders. It’s enough to catapult the RZR through the toughest of off road courses, through dunes, mud and more. And now that same engine has found a home in what Polaris must surely see

as the ‘ultimate recipe’ — the new Ranger XP 900.

The newest Ranger blends RZR aggression with the practicality rural folks demand from a working machine. There’s no shortage of style — check out those mag wheels, the rakish new cage design, and the almost ‘stealth’ panel design. But there’s plenty of substance, too, thanks to that powerful twin-pot overhead cam engine, coupled to the

toughest CVT box Polaris have ever engineered. There’s been no sacrifice of vital load space or capacity either — this model is in fact longer than 2012’s, with a large carrying tray and plenty of

torque to shift heavy gear. Perhaps most exciting of all is the option to completely enclose the cab, isolating the driver and passenger from the elements. Sounds like a great idea in this cold weather! And all the trademarked Lock and Ride panels — from windshield to doors — are a snap to take on and off as jobs demand.

With the XP 900 Polaris have put together their best extruded tubing cage, their best motor, and their best suite of handy little innovations to build the Ranger you wish you owned.

What’s more, Polaris launched this model by literally using it to tow a full sized dump truck up a steep incline. If it can manage that, then a few years of hard work on a Kiwi farm should be no problem at all. ¢
