The 29th international Red Sea Jazz festival returns to Eilat for four festive days, a fine bubbly musical salute, featuring jazz artists from all corners of the world including leading Israeli talents, concocted by internationally acclaimed musician, musical director Eli Degibri.

The complete lineup for the 2015 Summer Red Sea Jazz Festival includes: the Ron Carter Quartet, the Touré-Raichel Collective, the Jack DeJohnette Trio with Ravi Coltrane and Matt Garrison, Berry Sakharof with a special performance, saxophone virtuoso Joe Lovano, Daniel Zamir with special guest Eviatar Banai, French singer Cyrille Aimée, the Barak Mori Trio featuring Anat Cohen, Kendrik Scott Oracle, the Omer Klein Trio, Brass-A-Holics, the Ilan Salem Sextet, original Mexican band Sonex, the Ofer Landsberg Quintet, and the Leyla McCalla Trio.

Since 1987 the Red Sea international Jazz Festival is held every year during late summer in Israel's southern resort city of Eilat. The RSJF winter edition was launched in January 2011. Every summer Eilat Port transforms to offer a magnificent music venue with three open-air performance halls under the desert skies. In the winter this festive international jazz event takes place indoors in various locations around

the city of Eilat .

The Red Sea Jazz Festival Young Jazz Program provides a platform for young talents from the local jazz scene to support their international career development, grooming them to become a significant creative force in forging the future of the Red Sea Jazz Festival. This visionary project was initiated with the support of the RSJF Friends Association.

This year the RSJF Young Jazz Program will focus on two major events: Summer Workshop for young musicians and the Young Bands Competition.

The Young Bands Competition

The Red Sea Jazz Festival open stage set at the heart of the festival's compound will host selected Israeli young ensembles, opening each evening and performing every night during intermissions between scheduled festival performances.

An open competition to select the young bands to perform at the 2015 summer RSJF will be held at the Zone club in Tel Aviv on June 26, 2015.

Summer Workshop

Following the success of last year, this workshop for excelling young jazz musicians (ages 14-19) will be held for a second time. The RSJF summer workshop is scheduled during the week prior to the festival, 19-23 August, in the Eilat Field School. A team of musicians scheduled to perform in the 2015 summer RSJF will form the teaching faculty, offering students daily band practice, instrument study sessions, master classes as well as evening jam sessions.

Auditions for the RSJF Summer Workshop will be held during June.

Ofer LandsbergA Love Story with the 40sClassics

Rooted in traditional American jazz of the 40s, Israeli musician Ofer Landsberg travels in between the musical realms of now and then. He began playing at the age of seven and as a budding guitarist was influenced greatly by legendary musicians such as Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Tatum who continue to inspire him even today. Arriving in New York at the age of seventeen he began performing regularly alongside various acclaimed musicians including pianist Frank Hewitt, drummer Jimmy Lovelace, pianist Gil Coggins, and drummer Jimmy Worm worth .He soon became an established musician in the local scene he continued to collaborate with many musicians performing around the globe.

Landsberg (33) currently resides in London expanding his career as a performer, teacher and a passionate composer. Together with his band he brings the great American song book to the 2015 summer RSJF with familiar tunes from the 40s-50s as well as original compositions inspired by the beat of the 40’s. This is by no means a retro performance but a genuine reflection of Landsberg’s musical path, Ofer says: "I think if you play your own truth, whether it can be categorized as a kind of music or assigned to a certain era, it would be timeless and speak to all people who are willing to listen."

Joe LovanoTradition and Innovation according to the Saxophone Virtuoso

In what seems as a prophetic photograph, baby Joe Lovano is depicted cradled in his mother’s arms while she holds an alto saxophone, an instrument twice his size. 63 years later Lovano is “one of the greatest musicians in jazz history” as stated by the New York Times. This Grammy award winner saxophonist was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to a music loving family. His father, a barber by day and a great tenor saxophonist by night, and his uncles, a saxophonist and a trumpeter. As an infant he grew up on a healthy and solid diet of wholesome jazz, began playing alto saxophone at the tender age of five later switching to tenor saxophone. By the age of sixteen he was already a professional, putting himself through school. While attending the Berklee College of Music in the early 70s his traditional musical upbringing intertwined with innovative approaches. "My training was all bebop, and suddenly there were these open forms with deceptive resolutions", he says, "That turned me on, the combination of that sound and what I came in there with. I knew what I wanted to work on after that." This was the beginning of a long-term journey continuing more than three decades with fruitful collaborations constantly moving between innovation and tradition.

Throughout his abundant and successful career Lovano played with a great many musicians among them: Dr. Lonnie Smith, Woody Herman, Mel Lewis, Paul Motian, John Scofield, Herbie Hancock, Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, Bobby Hutcherson, Billy Higgins, Dave Holland, Ed Blackwell, Michel Petrucciani, Lee Konitz, Abbey Lincoln, McCoy Tyner, Ornette Coleman, Jim Hall, Bob Brookmeyer, Dave Liebman, Michael Brecker, Ravi Coltrane, Dave Douglas, and Stefon Harris. Within the unique expression of jazz Lovano does not hesitate to seek new concepts and subject matters. Through this constant quest for new forms of artistic expression, Lovano has established a successful career as a musician, band leader and composer. His dynamic personality has led him to create dozens of collaborations participating in various different bands while all along exploring new ways to express his muse. He also plays the drums and holds an impressive collection of gongs. The New York Times review writes about him, "Most jazz musicians are flexible: it's a philosophical requirement of the job. At 60, Joe Lovano is an extreme case, moving toward universality."

Daniel Zamir Quartet with special guest Eviatar BanaiJazz and the Spirit of an Authentic TuneWhen reading the resumé of Israeli saxophonist, composer and singer, Daniel Zamir, there is a reference stating that he performed on the same stage as Michael Brecker "Alav Ha-sholom", the customary Jewish saying akin to "may he rest in peace". This reference best describes the essence of Zamir’s artistic world, Jewish Jazz fusion. He was born 35 years ago to a secular family in Petach Tikva and moved along the usual musical training path from the Thelma Yellin High School of the Arts to Manhattan’s New School and a promising career as a jazz musician in New York. He recorded his first album with the Tzadik label, participated and produced by Jewish saxophonist and composer John Zorn. As his career advanced in the jazz scene he experienced a spiritual strengthening which led him 14 years ago to embrace Judaism and become a faithful Chabad adherent. His musical inspiration reflects diverse associations that create a whole greater than the sum of its parts. "My musical expression is influenced by things that I have absorbed, from childhood to the present day, "he said in an interview to Mako News, "and I do not censor myself."Zamir is a multicolor versatile musician whether he performs original material, jazz classics, Israeli folk songs adaptations or Jewish melodies. To this date he has already released nine albums and maintains a prolific musical career in Israel and abroad. Klein (33), an Israeli jazz pianist and composer who currently works from Germany, has established an internationally acclaimed career over the last decade. He began playing the piano at the age of seven, continued his training on the bass and also taught himself to play the guitar and drums. Combining jazz with Israeli music, Arabic music and North African roots, Klein began his professional career on stage when he was only 16. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music among his mentors were Menachem Wiesenberg and Opher Brayer in Israel, Danilo Perez in Boston and Fred Hersch in New York.In recent years, Klein leads his own trio with performances around the globe and enjoys a significant breakthrough in Europe where he is considered one of the most promising young pianists. The Touré-Raichel CollectiveTwo Stellar Musicians between Bamako-Sénou and Tel-AvivThe lives of international musicians are conducted between airports and long and tedious waits. During one of these occasions, at an airport in Germany in 2008, Israeli world music artist Idan Reichel met guitar virtuoso from Mali, Vieux Farka Touré. While on the road from here to there and back a chance encounter gave rise to a strong artistic friendship.Vieux Farka Touré (31) called the Jimi Hendrix of the Sahara, is the son of the legendary Ali Farka Touré, one of the greatest African musicians known for merging the music of Mali and American blues. Despite his father’s objection, Vieux followed his footsteps and built himself a reputation in the world music scene combining the African roots sound with Jamaican dub music and jam bands. This singer and guitarist creates a link between traditional African music from Mali, rock and roll, reggae, pop and salsa. Pianist and composer Idan Raichel (38), made his initial public appearance in Israel in 2002 with "The Idan Raichel Project" which has since established a tremendous success in Israel and around the world.The meeting between these two internationally acclaimed world music artists resulted in the launch of the Touré-Raichel Collective which has already released two albums, "The Tel Aviv Session" and "The Paris session". Cyrille AiméeClassic Pop Meets Classical JazzFrench singer Cyrille Aiméewas born to a French father and Dominican mother. She grew up in a small town, an hour's drive from Paris, where the Django Reinhardt jazz festival is held every summer. When the festival was in town she used to sneak out from her bedroom window to join the event that attracted mainly gypsies from all over Europe. The Romani people would play their music and sing all the time, and soon she fell in love with the gypsy way of life. She wandered around Europe, singing and playing on street corners across the continent with her musician friends. At 19, she moved to Paris and was a finalist in the French version of "American Idol". But when she was told she can sing only what they assign her to sing, her gypsy and jazz free spirit took over and she left the competition. After a visit to the Dominican Republic, to connect with her mother's musical roots, she settled in New York City and began studying, working on original material, and even winning prizes in major competitions including the Montreux Jazz Festival competition, the Thelonious Monk Competition and the Sarah Vaughan Competition.Cyrille (30), noted for her subtle and precise vocal expression lives in Brooklyn and has already released seven albums. In The New York Times she is described as "Michael Jackson brushes shoulders with Sarah Vaughanin the person of Cyrille Aimée, a saucy, curly-haired jazz singer with one foot in tradition and the other in electronics."With a clear feminine voice, sincere delivery akin to Edith Piaf, and the effects of electronic pop and gypsy styles, Cyrille Aimée creates a remarkable and uplifting jazz experience.

Leyla McCallaA Haitian Heritage that mesmerized New Orleans

The streets of New Orleans are the source of creative inspiration and an anchor for Leyla McCalla, young cellist, singer and composer. Born in New York City to a Haitian immigrant family, she began playing the cello as a child. "I was drawn to New Orleans because it seemed easier to access a creative space in a city that moved a little bit slower and invents and follows its own rules", she explains. Here, at the place where she always felt like home, Leila embarked on a journey full of musical and cultural discoveries. "The more I learned about the history of Louisiana, its ties to Haiti and French speaking culture, the more sense of belonging I felt and continue to feel", she says. At first she sat on street corners around the French Quarter playing cello Bach suites to passersby. Inevitably discovered she became a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops band, Grammy award winner in the traditional folk album category, which led to establishing her solo career.

Her debut album came out last year and includes compositions to Langston Hughes poems, and Haitian folk songs as well as original materials. Langston Hughes (1902-1967), an American poet, social activist and writer known as the leader of the Harlem Renaissance, a black activist cultural movement that operated until the mid-30s, who is considered one of the first jazz poetry artists. "I always really appreciated and loved the way that he uses words", she describes how Hughes became her source of inspiration."I found that the more that I was putting the music to the poems the more they became like stories and took on this whole life. Almost like characters that I understood, that I had come to understand."

McCalla draws musical inspiration from a variety of sources, from Bach and classical music, through the American folk music and traditional music from Haiti, to the musical traditions of Louisiana, with old Cajun fiddle tunes, trad jazz banjo, and the sounds and dance beats of Mardi Gras New Orleans. She plays several instruments however her outstanding eloquent expression as a cellist and a vocalist creates a caressing sound which is unparalleled. "Music, it hits your ears right away. You either like it or you don’t",McCalla says, "But I want people also feel like they understand what I’m trying to say."

Ron CarterThe Great Americana Bass

With appearances in more than 2,500 albums, Ron Carter is one of the most recorded bassists in the history of American jazz. Carter is the bass master. He is original, prolific and influential, as well as a composer, arranger, teacher, author and a Grammy Award winner. He began playing cello 68 years ago, when he was ten. Encountering difficulties when his family moved to Detroit due to racist stereotypes expressed by other classical musicians, he switched to bass. In the 60s, Carter was a member of the renowned Miles Davis quintet, playing alongside Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams. Later he worked with a great many musicians including: Thelonious Monk, Bobby Timmons, Cannonball Adderley, Sam Rivers, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, McCoy Tyner, Andrew Hill, Horace Silver, Tommy Flanagan, Billy Joel, Gil Evans, Lena Horne, Bill Evans, B.B. King, the Kronos Quartet, Dexter Gordon, and Wes Montgomery.Carter is a brilliant melodic and rhythmic player, and a master of every as pectand technique of the acoustic bass. As he moves from hard-bop, post-bop, straight A-Head Jazz, and the third stream that combines jazz and classical music, Carter encompasses the essence of elegance and style. Throughout his abundant and interdisciplinary career he combines both writing, teaching, conducting, and master class performances as well as holding senior positions such as artistic director of the Thelonious Monk Institute, and Professor at the Department of Music in the City College of New York. Carter says, "I think that the bassist is the quarterback in any group, and he must find a sound that he is willing to be responsible for."

Kendrick Scott OracleA Drummer's Prophetic Vision and the Art of Asking the Right Questions

"The oracle doesn't give answers, just questions for you to think about", is the motto of Oracle, the band led by American jazz drummer and composer, Kendrick Scott. The name Oracle that seeks to express both vision and worldview was inspired by two sources. First by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers whose music was aimed to influence people and challenge their ideas about music. The second source is the Oracle character in The Matrix science fiction action media franchise, whose questions help the protagonist Neo, "the One", to find the answers within himself.

Kendrick Scott was born 35 years ago in Houston, Texas. His strong link to music was instilled at home and at church, with the encouragement of his family. He attended the local High School of the Arts and since 2002, when he graduated from the Berklee College of Music, he began his professional career performing alongside esteemed musicians such as: Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Kenny Jarrett, Dianne Reeves, Liz Wright, Terence Blanchard, Nicholas Payton, James Moody, and Benny Green.

He participated in the recordings of nearly twenty albums, and released his first Oracle album in 2006 through his own record label. Oracle has released three albums since. Kendrick Scott is a drummer who has high quality technique, great intuition, an open-mind, a distinct melodic sense and flavorful style allowing him to adjust to a wide range of musical challenges. As a composer he is a fine architect of exquisite melodies creating a wonderful base for inspiring and enlightened improvisation."I really thought the best way to describe my music was not with one word or category", he says, "But it is jazz. It does have a lot of jazz influences. I developed some words, like: the music is lyrical. It has space. The music has momentum. It has a lot of contour."To use more familiar words, one could say that Scott takes the spirit of hard bop that led Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in the 50s and parades it proudly into present day with distinct aromas of post-bop and straight A-Head Jazz.

His music is played with passion and sincerity uncovering a variety of complex emotions, feelings that are meant to lead the audience through a journey of self-discovery to the more comprehensive truth. Oracle seeks to communicate a message of truth through questioning the obvious by motivating the audience to inquire profoundly into the meaning of existence.
