THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-CONFIDENCE LEVEL AND

STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY AT THE FOURTH SEMESTER OF

ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM OF IAIN PALANGKA RAYA ACADEMIC

YEAR 2013/2014

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the research was to found out the correlation between self-

confidence level and students’ speaking ability at the fourth semester of English

study program of IAIN Palangka Raya academic year 2013/2014. The writer was

interesting to this research case. Based on the last observation that feeling shy,

nervous and afraid to did mistake on grammar and pronunciation were the part of

crisis of students’ confidence that made them hard to communicated and

interacted in English. In other side, the writer saw the students who had

confidence was easy to communicated and active in speaking class. So students

have to increase their own self-confidence. Based on opinion above the writer

done this case to be proved.

The population of this research was 76 the English students of fourth

semester academic year 2013/2014. To get the data the writer used total sample.

Only 17 students (class A) as try out group and 40 students as the real sample

because several students hindered to join speaking and confidence test. The

approach of the study used the quantitative approach. This research has two

variables that are variable X (self-confidence level) and variable Y (students’

speaking ability). The collection the data used test and to analyzed the data by

using product moment formula.

The result showed that there was positive and moderately correlation

between both variables. The value of correlation coefficient was 0.463. It was on

scale 0.400-0.700 it meant that the correlation between the students’ confidence

and their speaking ability was in positive and moderately correlation. So if the

students’ confidence increased will increase their speaking ability and if the

students’ confidence decreased will decreased their speaking ability. So that Ha

stating that there was significance correlation between self confidence level and

students speaking ability was accepted and Ho stating that there was no

correlation between the self confidence level and students speaking ability was

rejected. Based on rtable was found 0.304<0.463>0.393. The calculation

contribution of variable X and variable Y showed that the value of KP was

21.44% it meant contribution variable X was able to contribute to variable Y

21.44% and others was influenced by other aspects.

Key Words: Self-Confidence, Speaking Ability, Correlation

HUBUNGAN ANTARA TINGKAT RASA PERCAYA DIRI DAN

KEMAMPUAN BERBICARA MAHASISWA PADA SEMESTER IV

PRODI PENDIDIKAN BAHASA INGGRIS DI IAIN PALANGKA RAYA

TAHUN AKADEMIK 2013/2014.

IAIN Palangkaraya tahun ajaran 2013/2014.

IV angkatan 2013/2014. Dalam pengambilan data penulis menggunakan sample

penuh (total sample). Hanya 17 mahasiswa (kelas A) sebagai kelompok try out

kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa ditolak. Dicocokan dengan nilai rtable

0.304<0.463>0.393. Kemudian berdasarkan perhitungan kontribusi variable X

memberikan kontribusi variable Y sebesar 21.44 % sedangkan sisanya

dipengaruhi oleh faktor lainnya yang belum diteliti.

Kata Kunci: Rasa Percaya Diri, Kemampuan Berbicara, Korelasi
