They are focused on art and learning Greek and Roman culture Main Facts About the Renaissance Renaissance means REBIRTH -It was the rebirth of the learning and culture following the Middle Ages/Dark Ages in Europe. The Renaissance was a Golden Age of Western Europe It was influenced by contacts made with the Middle East during the Crusades The Renaissance began and was centered in Florence, Italy. Popes and wealthy families, like the Medici of Italy, sponsored and supported great artists (they were the lovers of art) It was characterized by the growth of Humanism- an increased emphasis on the uniqueness, worth, and ability of humans Ex. Philosophy There was also the growth of Secularism- a greater interest in the concerns of this world, rather than the afterlife (less emphasis on religion) Ex. Wearing expensive clothes It was greatly influenced by classical Greek and Roman civilizations.
