The Residence: A remarkable building, in a remarkable city, on a remarkable street. The exact dates for when St John Street was created are a little unknown, but it does take its name from the church. So it would be fair to say that the property was constructed between 1770 and 1830. Early residents would have been from different occupations, but as time has passed by the occupancy has become almost exclusively connected with the medical and legal professions.

With such a impressive history, it’s now time for you to take the opportunity to be part of it’s future. St John Street is the only surviving Georgian terraced street in central Manchester, and forms the heart of the conservation area which was designated on 4th November 1970.

The Residence sits adjacent to the St John Street Conservation Area. The boundary of the conservation area follows Artillery Street, Longworth Street, Camp Street, Culvercliffe Walk, Lower Byrom Street, Quay Street and Byrom Street. St John Street has changed in only minor ways since being built. Generally owners have ensured that regular maintenance has preserved the quality of the street. However, in 1963 a facelift, partially funded by the City Council, was carried out which involved replacement of incompatible items such as windows and nameplates. Painting of timberwork helped re-establish a consistency throughout the street.
