It was conveyed in an inspirational talk delivered to those attending a CSU breakfast celebrating this year’s National Teacher of the Year, Michelle Shearer, who spoke to the gathered audience. This statement captures the essence of the life of Rev. Dr. Edwin M. Cooper, Jr., our Buddy, and certainly his ministry while faithfully serving St. Paul UMC for these past 14 years. Since the announcement about Buddy’s new role as the Columbus District Superintendent for the South Georgia Conference beginning in June, I had countless members share with me how Buddy has ministered to them through his excellent sermons, his bedside manner during times of illness, injury and grief, his mentoring role through marriages, baptisms, the raising of our children via the children’s sermons, the acolyte program, confirmation, and support of our youth, hours upon hours of Bible study, as well as being our tour guide par excellence for trips abroad. He has also delivered life lessons to several of the golfers in St. Paul out on the greens. For me, out of the many life-shaping moments garnered from Buddy, the one that is forever etched in memory is the impromptu church service held right after the September 11 events. Buddy set aside his own concerns and fears to lead St. Paul and my family back to our God who never leaves us in spite of worldly circumstances. Time after time, Buddy has demonstrated his faith, and it is through that faith that he has helped build the solid rock upon which our church stands. Through his selfless witness, he has shown us the life of Jesus Christ, the ONE who was, is, and will be “Selflessly Dedicated to Everyone Else’s Success!” Thank you, Buddy.
