Concepts:According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary:

A citizen is a person who legally belongs to a

country and has the rights and protection of that

country.

A right is being in accordance with what is just,

good, or proper.

Continuation of Concepts: Responsibility may be defined as a duty or task

that you are required or expected to do.

Additionally, it encompasses moral, legal, or

mental accountability.

Rights of a Jamaican Citizen

Protection of right to life

Protection from arbitrary arrest

Respect for private and family life

Protection for privacy of home and property

Protection of freedom of conscience

Protection of peaceful assembly

Continuation of Rights Protection from discrimination

Protection of the expression

Rights to fair trial

Right to vote

Responsibilities of the Jamaican Citizen

Every citizen or member of a community is obligated to:

Pay his/her share of tax that is levied for the good of

the community;

Obey the laws of the land

Serve as a witness in the court if summoned

Serving on a jury if called

Voluntary Responsibilities Being loyal to one's country

Understanding and using the Judicial process accordingly

Being an active member in the community

Being and active member in civic organizations

Voting properly and wisely in elections

Being a cooperative citizen with law enforcement agencies

Being well informed on current affairs or issues

Being helpful and respectful to one's neighbours

Question 1:

Why do we have a country laden with rights

and responsibilities yet our citizens do the

exact opposite? How far fetched is Jamaica

without these obligations? Would Jamaica

be Utopia or Dystopia?

Rights of a Chinese Citizen

Women in the People's Republic of China enjoy equal

rights with men in all spheres of life, political,

economic, cultural and social, and family life.

Citizens of the People's Republic of China have the

duty as well as the right to receive education. The state

promotes the all-round moral, intellectual and

physical development of children and young people.

Continuation of Rights

Working people in the People's Republic of China have

the right to rest. The state expands facilities for rest

and recuperation of working people, and prescribes

working hours and vacations for workers and staff.

Citizens of the People's Republic of China enjoy

freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, of

association, of procession and of demonstration.

Rights of a Cuban Citizen

The home is inviolable. Nobody can enter the home of

another against his will, except in those cases foreseen

by law.

The State guarantees the right to protection, safety and

hygiene on the job by means of the adoption of

adequate measures for the prevention of accidents at

work and occupational diseases.

The State, which recognizes, respects and guarantees

freedom of conscience and religion, respects, and

guarantees the freedom of every citizen to change religious

creeds, or not to have any; and to profess the religious

worship of their choice, with respect for the law.

Question 3: If the definition of a good citizen means abiding

by all these rights and responsibilities are we truly

free to live or are we silently oppressed?
