HOMEWARD TOUR

From: Mike Moffatt 12 June 2017

Contact Telephone: 09 2385051 Email: [email protected]

Y our Homeward Tour team (Norman Pointon and I) have devised a flexible itinerary for those who want to enjoy more of the Far

North after the Ramble has finished and before heading back south. All meals and accommodation on this itinerary are by your own arrangement. Our suggestions for an interesting journey are as follow:

WEDNESDAY 28 FEBRUARY - Trip to Cape Reinga (via Kaitaia).

Kaitaia is 30km from Taipa so you can stay put in your Taipa accommodation on Tuesday night. Alternatively accommodation is available at The Northern Motor Inn Kaitaia for $90 per room and you may wish to move over to Kaitaia after the final dinner and enjoy a more leisurely start on Wednesday.

You are welcome to drive your Riley up to the Cape but we do not recommend driving on the beach route. If there is sufficient demand I will organise a bus trip from Kaitaia. Please let me know A.S.A.P. if you want to take up the bus option.

THURSDAY 1 MARCH - South to Whangarei.

South via Ahipara and Rawene Ferry ($12.50). Suggest lunch stop at Morrells Roadside Café at Mangamuka, then down through the Waipoua Forest to see “Tane Mahuta” and visit Kai Iwi Lakes or the Dargaville Museum (highly recommended). Then

across to Whangarei where accommodation can be again at The Settlers or as you wish.

FRIDAY 2 MARCH - South to Auckland.

Travel down to Matakohe to visit the Kauri Museum where lunch is available. You can use SH1 and turn off at Brynderwyn, or for the more adventurous take the turn off at Oakleigh (Paparoa-Oakleigh road) for a driver’s route to Paparoa, then turn Right on SH12 to Matakohe. After a quick lunch we will return on SH12 to SH1 to Wellsford and then down SH12 to Hellensville. Accommodation is as you choose. From Helensville we will be able to use the new Waterview Tunnel route SH20A which will take us round Auckland onto SH1 and enable a meet-up at the BP Service Station at Bombay. There may be some Auckland Rileyites who will offer a bed.

SATURDAY 3 MARCH - South either down the middle via Taupo or the western route via Taumarunui.

From Bombay Service Centre there is a choice of three southbound routes:

Taupo is four to five hours in a Riley depending on the number of stops you make, Turangi would take another hour Whanganui is six to seven hours in a Riley once again depending on stops.

Route 1. Taupo via Hamilton.

Straight down the Main SH1 to Hamilton. The route is signposted, there is a motorway that takes you around the outskirts of Hamilton through an industrial area with clear signs directing traffic south by passing Cambridge, travelling through Tirau, Putaruru, Tokoroa to Taupo. Lunch stop at Tirau where there are a number of cafés or Putaruru where The Wooden Farmer is at the top of the hill going into the township. There are plenty of good motels, back packers and restaurants in Taupo and a number in Turangi as you wish. PTO

Page 4: The Riley Ramble team look forward to making you welcome ......It is possible to comfortably get to Taupo for meals and accommodation. For further instructions see Route 1. You will

Route 2. Taupo via Matamata

Take the Coramandal turn off at the bottom of the Bombay Hills by turning left onto SH2. Proceed ahead at the Thames roundabout to remain on SH2 and ahead at the Tauranga turn-off to join Route 27 and follow this to Matamata

Hobbiton is signposted at Matamata (brochure available before you depart the Ramble). After visiting Hobbiton follow route 27 or route 24, then 28 to Either Tirau or Putaruru.

It is possible to comfortably get to Taupo for meals and accommodation. For further instructions see Route 1. You will rejoin this the route at Tirau or Putaruru .

If you wish to keep off SH1 then turn right before leaving Tokoroa and head towards Whakamaru (signposted Mangakino), a beautiful rural road that brings you out at the Dam Café on your left - excellent stopping place. Leaving the café turn left and proceed on SH 32 (there is one marked viewing place where you can see Lake Taupo). At the Kuratau Junction turn left, and go towards Turangi and SH1. You will have to decide if you wish to turn off and travel towards National Park, the preferred route to Whanganui.

The rest of this route is well signposted, you will be able to divert to the Chateau Tongaririo, but you will miss the National Park settlement (excellent food at the Railway Station Café). Turn left onto SH4 and head south towards Whanganui. If you decided to go through Turangi

you will join SH1 and follow Sunday's run from Taupo-There are suitable Motels in Turangi and eating places.

Route 3. Taumarunui or Whanganui.

Travel south on SH1 Turn right at Rangiriri and follow the Waikato river south, this will bring you out at Ngaruawahia where you join SH39 to Te Awamutu ( or Pirongia)

Accommodation at Te Awamutu, Otorohanga, Te Kuiti or Taumarunui. There are numerous cafes and restaurants in each of these towns. From Te Awamutu join SH3

and head south towards Te Kuiti, travelling South through the King Country — Otorohanga, Te Kuiti and Taumarunui from any of these towns keep on SH 3 which

changes to SH4 at eight mile junction, this takes you to Whanganui through the Parapara's, this is a very scenic route.

SUNDAY 4 MARCH—South to Wellington. From Taupo Wellington is six or seven hours in a Riley with several stops. Head south on SH1,you will travel around the shores of Lake Taupo to Turangi, good coffee at the Mustard Seed Café on the left side of Turangi and around the roundabout. Continue south on SH1 over the Desert Road to Waiouru where the Army Museum is located-good coffee break, toilets available and a worthwhile look at the Museum. Taihape is the next town, it has several good cafés the

Exchange is located in the first street on the left in town and the Sugar Loaf is in the first on the right. Continue South From Taumarunui Wellington is five or six hours in a Riley with several stops depending on the route you take. Should you wish to travel via Ohakune, turn left at the Tohunga junction (69km south of Taumarunui on SH4) and a further 9km brings you into the ski-town resort. From there travel eastwards on SH49 to Waiouru (27km) to browse through the Army Museum and have a bite to eat before heading south on SH1. From there, the main highway will take you through Taihape (29km), and a further 84km to Bulls. At Bulls take the LH branch and a further 7km turn right at Sanson and you're heading for Wellington about 144km away. There are ample places to rest up on the way and if you have time, the Southward's Car Museum at Paraparaumu is well worth a visit. Be aware however that the new

highway bypasses both Waikanae and Paraparaumu.

The other alternative route from Ohakune, is to head for Raetihi (either from Ohakune or from the Tohunga junction (about 10km) to

take the Parapara route to Wanganui (a further 84 km). This is a very picturesque route but you cannot be in a hurry! There are

ample places to stop over in Wanganui and from there about 44km south and you connect up with Bulls.

Drive safely and have a happy trip home, Mike & Norman.
