much of the world suffered from an economic depression.

2. Many European countries suffered physically and economically after WWI.

3. In Russia, a revolution led to the formation of a communist dictatorship.

Totalitarianism

1. Dictators used totalitarianism, a system of government where the government has complete control over its citizens’ lives.

2. For the most part, the government made all decisions.

The Rise of Hitler in Germany

1. Germany suffered more than any other country after WWI.

Background to Hitler8. Hitler was a soldier in WWI.9. Early on, he tried to lead a

rebellion against the Weimar Republic, but it failed.

10. He went to prison where he wrote Mein Kampf, which translates to My Struggle.

11. In it he outlined his beliefs, which included the superiority of pure blooded German people and the inferiority of groups like the Jews, Gypsies, and Slavic people.

12. Ironically, Hitler was Austrian.

Fascism in Italy

1. Italy also struggled with the depression.

2. Political struggles developed and the Fascists gain control.

3. They believed in fascism, which is a form of government that promotes extreme nationalism, devotion to a dictator, and one-party rule.
