Anubandh…A Reunion of Self-reliant Families

The Home Based Care Programme (HBC) team

organised a family meet called "Anubandh" in

the month of March. More than 250 phased out

families participated in this event. The word

"Anubandh” signifies long lasting relationship.

This platform was created to nurture the

relationship with self-reliant families.

Families used this platform to share their experiences, achievements, their concerns and

feedback on the different ways they managed difficult situations. The highlight of the

discussion was towards the support needed by the families to disclose their status to their

children and the educational assistance for their children. The entire event was inspiring for

all the families and the HBC staff. Different activities such as theme based dance, videos,

games were organised to strengthen the bond among the group.

Towards Safe Cities for Children

As part of Child Protection and Building Safe Communities programme, CCDT organised a

day long deliberation, "Towards Safe Cities for Children" on 28th April, 2015 in collaboration

with its consortium partners UNICEF, Pratham and YUVA.

Representatives of Department of Women and Child Development and Maharashtra State

Child Protection Society were part of the discussions. This deliberation was a significant step

by all likeminded organisations towards making Mumbai a safe city for children.

communities for children and also the available systems and services for Child Protection.

The deliberation was attended by 65 participants representing more than 25 organisations,

including various eminent personalities from the field of Child Protection, who expressed

their views and opinions through panel discussions and reflective sessions.

Release of the Module of “Aao Baat Karein”- Empowering

Adolescents who are Infected/Affected by HIV

CCDT as part of the Forum on Child Protection and HIV developed the Module “Aao Baat

Karein” for Empowering Adolescents who are infected/affected by HIV. The module was

released on 14th May 2015 by Dr. Shobana Tehra, Joint Director (Basic Services Dept.),

MSACS and Rajeshwari Chandrasekar, Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Maharashtra. The

development and publication of this module has been supported by UNICEF, Maharashtra.

Also, Dr. Vinay Kulkarni from Prayas presented and led the discussion on 'Out of Reach': A

Situation Analysis among children affected by HIV.

This module is for the adolescents in the age group of 12 -19 years, infected/affected by HIV.

The module is developed with the spirit of 'Celebrating Adolescence' through the combined

synergies between the facilitators and the learners. The module is a powerful tool that will

help facilitate the process of empowerment of adolescents encouraging them to explore and

express themselves effectively for living a fulfilling and dignified life. Feel free to reach out

to CCDT for copies of the module.

Hurray!! We complete another Milestone...!

Five girls from the Ankur-Asmita Centre of the Residential Care

Programme appeared for their 12th board exams this year. It gives us

great pleasure to share that all the five girls successfully completed

their 12th board and are now pursuing their higher studies. The

entire team of CCDT wishes them hearty congratulations!

Sahyog: A New Initiative

Uniting To Reach the Most Deprived- Tribes of SGNP…

Health Intervention through Community Participation to Improve Quality of Life for

Underprivileged Tribal Families

CCDT initiated the Project Sahyog in Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), a protected

forest located within the urban setting of Mumbai and Thane districts in Maharashtra from

1st March 2015. Sahyog is a consortium programme between CCDT and Doorstep supported

by Plan India. CCDT is intervening in the domain of health and Doorstep in the domain of

education.

CCDT team are intervening with tribal families focusing on Pregnant Women, Lactating

Women and Children between 0 to 6 years. The idea is to target malnutrition from gestation,

through lactation and the crucial early years of childhood.

Tribal families are one of the most exploited and deprived sections of the population in the

Indian society, who face high levels of poverty, illiteracy, poor health, and human rights

abuse. Similar is the case with tribal families living for generations in 28 padas (hamlets) of

SGNP. The Sahyog Prgramme is intervening in the 13 padas located in the Mumbai Suburban

part of SGNP, reaching out to more than

2500 members from approximately 850

families. Of these 13 padas, 11 padas are

located in Borivali and two padas in

Goregaon.

Nutrition is a key aspect of healthy,

productive lives and the lack of it can have

pervasive impacts not only on an

individual but on the entire community as

a whole.

"We are playing Nutrition Snakes and Ladders to promote

healthy eating practices. You see all those veggies, eggs, don’t

you? Interesting, isn’t it?"

URBAN NUTRITION INITIATIVE

The Urban Nutrition Initiative is a low-cost Public Private Partnership between Rajmata Jijau

Mother and Child Health and Nutrition Mission (RJMCHNM), TATA Trust and Committed

Communities Development Trust (CCDT) partnering with other field NGOs working in the

area of maternal and child health and nutrition. The project aims to reduce malnutrition by

reaching out to children in the age group of 0-2 years, pregnant women and lactating

mothers. This is being implemented in two phases in eight high burdened ICDS projects

through four NGOs viz: CCDT in Mumbai, VACHAN in Nashik, FMCH in Thane, Amhi

Amchya Arogyasaathi and ISSUE in Nagpur with technical support from UNICEF and

RJMCHMN.

The project shall cover a total of 797 Anganwadi Centres with an estimated population of

8,70,000 with a reach out to target beneficiaries of 37000 (0-2 year olds), 8000 pregnant

women and 8000 lactating mothers approximately in a period of three years.

CCDT has initiated the UNI in Khar/ Santacruz (E) from September 2014 in 220 AWCs to be

intervened in two phases of 18 months. The 1000 day (-9 to 24 months) approach, 10 key

essential nutrition interventions, with emphasis on prevention of LBW, IYCF, tracking and

monitoring high risk mothers and children, ensuring that they receive essential health and

nutrition services will be the thrust of this intervention.

As part of the core interventions of this initiative a 3-day Training of Trainers was planned

and scheduled in May 2015, as a first level for building capacities of UNI staff and ICDS

supervisors with technical expertise from UNICEF and RJMC consultants.

Awareness Program by Childline

One of the activities the Childline project conducted was the awareness program which was

held in Sanjay Gandhi National Park Borivali East. The programme conducted four such

awareness sessions in three months whereby it reached 2428 community members. The

objective of this program was to reach a large number of audience to create awareness about

1098 CHILDLINE helpline which is a

national 24 hours free, phone

emergency outreach service for children

in distress, from the age group of 0 - 18

years in need of care and protection

Bringing back to life...

Shikha and Rekha are two sisters who were admitted in the centre in November 2014. The

case was referred by CCDT Childline. When admitted, both the girls were severely

malnourished. The elder one, Shikha (3.8 years old) weighed a mere 8.7 kilos and her sister,

Rekha (2 years old) weighed 4.6 kilos. Shikha could barely stand on her feet, whereas Rekha

could not even sit and would lie down all the time.

With the help of proper nutrition, timely medical assistance and close monitoring, both

children showed tremendous improvement in their health. In this case, it was not only the

staff but also the children in the centre who contributed to their recovery. While both the

sisters were provided with care and support, the father was also contacted for their birth

certificates. As we write, Shikha (now 4.4 years old) weighs 12 kilos, while Rekha (now 2.5

years old) weighs 6 kilos.

Both the girls have become very active mentally and physically. They express and respond to

the children and staff. Shikha spends a lot of time in the classroom happily playing with the

other children and participates in most educational activities that are conducted in the

centre.

An event was planned and organised by the leaders of Nanhi Muththi (Bal Sangathan of

Maitree Programme) on 1st and 8th March 2015. Enthusiastic leaders came up with number of

creative skits and dance performances to

enlighten and entertain their group

members on the vital issues of community

such as child sexual abuse, child labour,

education and health. In addition, a movie

capturing till date activities of the Bal

Sangathan was screened. A total of 607

children participated at the event.

Annual Meet of Children from Maitree II Programme

Mini Marathon

Shubh Aarambh programme hosted a mini marathon at Yeoor on 12th April 2015 with the

objective of promoting health and fitness amongst the children of the community. In this

marathon, 155 children between the age group 7 - 18 years participated. The atmosphere was

full of energy and everyone eagerly waited for the race to start. The marathon was flagged

off at 8:30 a.m. and covered a distance of 2.5 km from Thane Municipal School to Pandit

School.

Children tremendously enjoyed the event and completed the run in lesser time than

expected. The event was well supported by the local leaders who were present for the award

ceremony. The first 20 children who completed the run were awarded with medals by the

local leaders. Other children were also given the participation medals by their Community

Youth Leaders (CYLs).

Tarangan Sports Week

Sports have always been an essential component of overall development of children and

hence a week long sports tournament was organised during the summer vacation at

Tarangan (A learning space for Maitree children within the Community at Dahisar) for

Maitree I children. The Tarangan sports week was held from 20th April to 24th April 2015,

where 275 children enthusiastically participated in all the activities.

The week long sport activities promoted physical fitness as well as intellectual abilities and

creativity. A competitive tournament on cricket, box cricket, carrom, kabaddi and badminton

was organised at Tarangan. The children were involved in creative activities such as poster

making and debate competitions. During the poster making competitions the children used

their imagination and creativity to depict on how they associate themselves with the issues

on water and child development.

Area leaders and CCDT level leaders of Nanhi Muththi played a vital role by being part

of the discipline committee, facilitating activities and also co-judging the event with the team

members.

To boost the confidence of children all the winning teams and runner-ups were given medals

and trophies. During the closing ceremony child volunteers were invited and felicitated for

their involvement and cooperation. Mr. Kiran More and Ms. Kalpana Gaikwad were invited

as chief guests to felicitate and encourage the children. The week started with a high note

and culminated with celebrations and team bonding.

Ashray and Ankur-Asmita jiggle to the beats of the world

Eight children from Ashray and nine girls from Ankur-Asmita (Centres for our Residential

Care Programme) participated in a dance programme organised by the NGO, Our Children,

on 1st May 2015. The theme of the programme was ‘Global Folklore’ where 41 different

NGOs exhibited various dance styles from across the globe.

The children were greeted warmly at the Shanmukananda Hall, which was the venue for the

event. A stall located at the entrance had paintings displayed for sale, that were made by the

children from Ashray and Ankur-Asmita.

The Ashray children performed on Argentina’s folk dance and Ankur-Asmita on the Turkey

folk dance. The performances of both centres were beautifully depicted. While the Ashray

children were in white tops and long skirts, the Ankur-Asmita girls were dressed in

‘Anarkalis’ to depict the Turkish style of dance. The dance of Ankur-Asmita was

choreographed by one of the girls from our centre, who dedicated her time to choreograph

the steps and beats for the group. Both the final performances were well-synchronized and

much appreciated by the audience of nearly 500 participants.

Summer Camps in Residential Care Programme

1. Summer Camp Organised by Magic Bus:

It was the second consecutive year where Residential Care Programme (RCP) teamed up

with Magic Bus to organise and conduct a residential Summer Camp for three days for the

children. The camp was held for children between 10 years to 20 years of age with the

objective to ‘enhancing soft skills’. The camp took place at Karjat on 5th, 6th and 7th May 2015.

The children were given an exposure to a combination of organised activities along with free

time in the evenings to play a sport of their choice. The activities included rappelling, wall-

climbing and a series of other creative activities. With the intention to refine the soft skills of

the children, the activities were followed by a critical discussion and analysis of their

individual behaviors and style of communication.

Throughout the camp the children received individual attention from the instructors

assigned to their group and were given various opportunities to exhibit their talent, creative

thinking and unleash their energy productively.

2. Summer Camp Organised by Gunvati Kapoor Foundation:

A five day in-house camp was conducted at Ashray in April by a Non-Profit Organization

named ‘Gunvati Kapoor Foundation’. The Foundation in partnership with RCP conducted a

theme based camp focusing on ‘Health and Hygiene’ for children in two separate age groups

of 6 - 11 years and 12 - 14 years. The camp was full of activities, quizzes, art and

presentations to make children more aware of their bodies, keeping themselves clean and fit

and eating healthy food at the right time.

Beautifying Ashray Centre

A five day mural painting initiative took place at the Ashray centre, with the objective of

beautifying the classroom set up. This initiative was led by the founder of Scribble

Foundation, Ms. Alisha Aranha, a copy editor by profession. The team of six converted the

education area wall into an underwater theme with the participation of the children. A small

patch on the wall was assigned to every child who took active part in painting the aquatic

creatures drawn out to them by the Scribble team. The experience was truly a colourful one

for everyone at Ashray!
