It’s hard to believe May is here already, and soon the kids will beout of school for the summer. As I write this, sitting in sunnyTampa, Florida, I’m hesitant to board the plane and return to 40

degree weather tonight. I guess I shouldn’t complain, however, given the outstanding weather we’ve had this spring.

The early warm temps have awakened the various plants situatedthroughout the entrances to our subdivision. Very shortly, representatives from the Board and Landscape Committee, alongwith our arborist, Care of Trees, and landscape company, LikesLandscape, will perform a walking tour of the entrances to assessany winter damage and consider any replacement andenhancement needs. In addition, we will continue to monitor thehealth of our mature trees along Book Road and 104th Street. Please take a moment to examine your own trees that boarder thesidewalk to ensure all low hanging branches are trimmed to avoidpossible injury to walkers, joggers, and bikers.

I would like to take a moment to remind homeowners to pleasecontact the Architectural Committee if you are planning anychanges to the exterior of your home or property (e.g. replacingDryvit, changing paint colors or adding a fence, etc.). the happy gardenertips for everyone who love to dig

By Heather Prince

Try a Unique Edible

Most of us have a sunny spot that we canplant with edibles. Although we carrymany varieties of tomatoes and peppers at

The Growing Place, this year, why not try somethinga little different? These plants all do best in full sunand average soils. This is a roundup of some favoriteslightly unusual edibles that we think might tickleyour fancy.

Herbs2012 is the Year of the Herb! Add some zest to yourcooking by trying a different basil. The traditionalsweet basil is a favorite for pesto, salads, beveragesand more. Think about trying Greek Columnar for aspicier flavor or if you enjoy Asian cooking, sampleone of the Thai or Indian basil varieties.

For a dramatic foliage plant that also tastes great, trycardoon! Its huge silvery leaves are wonderful incontainers or paired with purple foliage for extrapunch. The ribs of the leaves taste like artichokes andonce blanched, can be roasted, sautéed or baked.

Winter savory offers a wonderful peppery spicinessfor grilled meats or added to pasta salads.Traditionally used to flavor salami, winter savory isa perennial that can be harvested almost year roundfor fall soups and stews.

FruitsWho doesn’t love the taste of fresh strawberries?Sometimes we don’t have room for strawberryplants with their long runners. Try an alpinestrawberry that stays in a compact mound and offerssmall, succulent berries. They are perfect for acontainer or child’s garden.

New this year are honeyberries. From Siberia andthe Far East, honeyberries are large oblong berrieswith thin skins. Their sweet-sour flavor isreminiscent of a cross between blackberry andcherry. These tasty berries ripen in June and arefilled with antioxidants.

Love apples, but just don’t have the space? Considera Hat Trick apple tree! Three varieties of apple –Honeycrisp, Sweet Sixteen and Zestar – are graftedto one trunk and trained into a flat espaliered shape. This apple is perfect for a sunny wall or along afence.

TomatoesThere are many many varieties of tomatoesavailable. The Growing Place is very excited to offersomething new this year – grafted tomato plants! Agrafted tomato has sturdier, more disease resistantroot stock, so your plants will thrive. We will carryhybrid Early Girl and Beefsteak varieties plusheirloom Pineapple and Black Krim. Try one!

Truth be told, each of us has afanciful story to tell of the oneemployee in the department who

bakes the finest bread or holds the recipeto the preeminent made-from-scratchcookies. We envy them the culinarytalents they possess, marveling at thesheer excitement that erupts during eachdepartmental gathering wherehomemade items are solicited.

Sugar Monkey Cupcakes® is the artfulcreation of one such person, NedaDarwish, R.N. Encouraged by the robustfanfare her cupcakes generated atdepartment meeting after meeting, shedecided to “[hang-up] her stethoscopeand [start] making her cakes full time.”(http://www.sugarmonkeycupcakes.com/about_us) Neda Darwish foundedSugar Monkey Cupcakes® based on aprinciple that blended her love of bakingwith her life’s passion to care for others. And as Neda will tell you, “SugarMonkey was a name derived from mythree boys…they are my little sugarmonkeys.”

Once inside, you will be treated to ascrumptious variety of specialtycupcakes, direct from the oven andbursting with homemade goodness. Each cupcake is crafted using real eggs, butter, flour, sugar and pure vanilla. In

other words, no artificialflavors or powdered replicasare used in the baking

process – a feat only aselect fewestablishments canclaim.

You will be thoroughlyconvinced, from the very firstbite, that these are not your

grandmother’s cupcakes. Thetexture is broad and substantial,

with a moist cake that lingers effortlesslyon the palate. The buttercream frostingpops with flavor yet soothes the tastebuds with its velvety consistency.Simply put, these cupcakes are the realdeal.

Each day of the week features a uniqueassortment of cupcake flavors, to furthertantalize your senses. On the day Ivisited the quaint little bakery filled witharomatic bliss, I was surrounded bychocolate with vanilla frosting, raspberrywith lemon atop, chocolate coconut, anda vanilla on vanilla. Other days of theweek present perfect inventions that willdazzle with equal aplomb.

Although the hours of operation areclearly posted, be sure to call ahead, especially as the day draws to an end.Sugar Monkey Cupcakes® bakes freshdaily and sells its cornucopia of treatsuntil they are gone. The bakery thencloses for the day, which may be soonerthan the official closing time. On the rareoccasion there’s a surplus of cupcakes atthe close of business, they are graciouslydonated to a local charity, hospital orpolice/fire station.

Sugar Monkey Cupcakes® accepts ordersfor special events, from weddings tobanquets, and your unique cupcakeideas are always welcome. Visit theirFacebook page to view event picturesand to receive special offers.

I highly recommend Sugar MonkeyCupcakes® for those looking for a trulyoutstanding cupcake experience. Andyes, even grandma would agree.

Dogs love to spendtime outdoors, andthey are great

jogging or walkingcompanions. But whether youare hiking in the woods orvisiting the park, there arepesky parasites waiting to hitcha ride home with your dog. Notonly can fleas and ticks causeyour dog great discomfort, theycan cause serious illness andeven death. Some dogs developextreme allergies to fleas andthat can lead to infection. Tickscan carry diseases such as Lymedisease or canine ehrlichiosis.

Heartworm disease, transmitted through a mosquitobite, is also potentially fatal toboth dogs and cats. Once fleasand ticks enter your home theycan multiply until you have aninfestation; once they have

multiplied, they can be verydifficult to exterminate. Thegood news is there are manyproducts on the market that canrepel or kill those parasites.Remember an ounce ofprevention is worth a pound ofcure!

As far as cats are concerned, keep them indoors at all times.Life outdoors is rough to saythe least for a cat. Just take amoment to learn more aboutour featured cat, Cowboy. Hewas picked up by NapervilleAnimal Control as a stray. Heis around seven years old andlived a pretty hard life out onthe streets. He was covered infleas and his fur is quite patchyand the scabbing on his skin is aresult from those bites.

His ears are also bit raggedfrom frostbite. But asweeter cat, you could notfind! This friendly andoutgoing cat had beenunfortunately busybreeding for many years.Through his many“challenging” years hehas contracted andpossibly transmitted FIV,an immuno-deficiency

virus sometimes called “kittyAIDS”. It is a cat-only diseasethat is spread by serious, penetrating bite wounds. Bitewounds of this kind areextremely rare, except in free-roaming, unneutered tomcats, like Cowboy. Now he isneutered and ready to cozy onup in a forever home. He canlive a perfectly long, happy andhealthy life indoors where hebelongs.

Cowboy’s adoption fee isonly $50, since he is considereda senior. He has been examinedby a vet and is up to date on allhis vaccines, including rabies. He is also neutered andmicrochipped and will comewith a collar and cat carrier!

If a senior person (age 60 orolder) adopts Cowboy, theadoption fee is only $10. Comemeet him and all the wonderfulanimals waiting for new homesat the Naperville Area HumaneSociety at 1620 W. Diehl Roadin Naperville.
